Hi everyone hows it going?

I'm just about to start an imperial fist tutorial I found which needs four yellow shades - I have a mix of brands i ended up with after a couple ebay joblots.

I'm new to painting mini's, just starting out.

The tutorial uses - Yriel yellow - Averland sunset - Flash Gitz - Dorn Yellow

I have looked at a couple paint chart conversion tables but still not 100% what to go for from my own paint choices i have at the moment - some suggestions don't seem to match up for instance for Flash gitz the charts suggest AV Sunblast yellow or Daemonic Yellow army painter or babe blonde from another chart - these all look different shades of yellow to me with av sunblast being more orange / babe blonde quite bright and daemonic yellow a little duller looking?

Might be easier to list what yellows I have available at the moment?

Citadel - Golden Yellow (old version)

Scale Color - Sol Yellow, Tenere Yellow, Sahara Yellow

Army Painter - Daemonic Yellow, Babe Blonde, Phoenix Flames, Moon Dust

Game Color - Sun Yellow

Any suggestions for these four shades would be great thanks.

My advice would be to forget charts. Experiment with and mix your paints, and figure out what works for you.

Yellow is a difficult colour to lay down anyway, so you're going to be fighting that too. I'd start with a light brown basecoat, then work your yellows up from there.

Remember that yellow is a very translucent colour for the most part.

If you're working over a black primer (not really wise for most purposes), then going through an opaque orange-brown or tan brown before working up with a good heavy ochre is the best way I've found.

VMC red leather covers black very well, then you can go to a heavy ochre (VGC heavy ochre is nice). Highlight with yellows of your choice from there.

It's actually probably best for you to go the contrast route if you're new - even taking into account you'll probably pool it, this is far easier to fix than having to work through many, many coats from an old technique. GW have some great tutorials on this. It'll also (by means of necessity) quite quickly teach you good glazing technique (even application and control of paint on the surface).

Thanks for the advice folks

I have a grey scale color primer i can work from

I'll have a little look at what orange/browns i have and see what I can work with at the moment.

I think I'll grab a yellow contrast soon and try that out once I see a couple more paints I might need.

Cheers

Yeah, yellow goes over the contrast yellow nicely if you use a light base coat.

These are 3D printed Rhinos at 8mm scale for AT with bright aluminum primer then one coat of contrast yellow with a 5:2 ratio of paint to medium. I did a few in Iron Warriors and a few as Fists but the layers are the same. That’s one coat of Averland (about as bright as I’m going at 8mm scale) over the contrast yellow. You can on the closeup of the Fist Rhino that I didn’t do the exhaust in contrast first, that’s one of coat of Averland over the metal primer and you can see it’s not a solid layer but the Averland is quite opaque over the area I did with contrast yellow.
