My first attempt failed (tissue I used was too thick and the paint I mixed ended up pink...), so I tried again!

Thick double-corrugated cardboard cut into squares (getting 1/2-inch smaller each time), glued together with PVA, covered with toilet tissue and PVA and then painted with cheap acrylic paint (Burnt Umber and White Titanium mixed), and then finally dry-brushed with White Titanium acrylic paint.
