Hi guys, any Yme-Loc or similar orange army collectors out there? Any tips on painting the oranges? I'm using GW paints (jokaero base, feugan wash, trollslayer layer and fire dragon bright highlight), but trollslayer orange seems to be particularly difficult to use. It's so translucent, I can't get decent coverage and it's taking me ages to layer up even one model with the end result not being as smooth and crisp as I'm able to get with other colours.

Any help would be useful, even suggestions for alternative paints.

what are you using for an undercoat? for my Metalica(not gw studio scheme) I undecorated/primed with a flat bright yellow, then basically same colors but I used reikland instead. I'll try to dig them out and take a pic for you.

I primed with Mechanicus Standard Grey because the models are more than half grey. I don't think that's a problem, though, because the Jokaero covers so well. Several thin coats gave me a really solid smooth base. It's literally just the amount of time it's taking me to get the same effect with Trollslayer.

I'm getting to the point I've almost finished the first guardian, so I'll post a pic of that when I do.

Yes please! Would love to see.

While it might impact the final colour, you could do worse than consider using a thicker pigment yellow, such as a good rich ochre as a base layer if you're painting directly onto the grey. Or a thick pigment cream yellow from Vallejo, etc. Or even simply a lighter grey, etc. etc. Painting orange directly on anything is generally a bad idea.

Slap some thicc white as base and paint base bright orange on top of it, leave 30 layers per model nonsense for characters.

Pink, bright brown, or yellow as stated above also work, see what hue you'll like more.

I had similar problems until I found Humbrol acylic orange gloss spray. Spray with that and then a quick coat of trollslayer to take the gloss off. If your going to shade then recess shade only, trollslayer is too translucent to even cover fuegan if you shade the whole model and then try re-layer trollslayer.

If you're putting Troll Slayer directly over the washed basecoat, that might be your problem, since it's a pretty big jump in color. I would suggest reapplying Jokaero, then layer on the Troll Slayer.

That said, the advice of working from white is also a good one. Over white, it would be much easier to simply apply two layers of Troll Slayer, selectively wash Fuegan into the recesses, and then highlight with Fire Dragon.

Try purple wash, it's fancy. And since Yme Loc has green spirit stones, might end up even fancier looking.

Lots of good suggestions, thanks guys. I haven't had a chance to paint over the weekend, but hoping to get back to it tomorrow.

Yeah, I was layring over the wash. Obviously that was my mistake... stupid me. :/ I'll see what comes out with this batch of guardians, then adjust my techhique accordingly.

I'm using blue waystones, btw. I think sky blue looks great with the orange.

Okay, I've finished the first of the squad and I think she came out pretty good! But yeah, layering up the trollslayer over shaded jokaero took an age...

Oh, and here's the rest of the squad at various levels of completion.

I had similar issues with troll slayer (seems translucent). Layering as you have is very time consuming, especially if you have a whole army to do. Wish I could help, I can't, but I did want to say it looks great and that's a good color scheme you have going. Hope you keep sharing.

Keeping the hobby side alive!

I never forget the Dakka unit scale is binary: Units are either OP or Garbage.

Thanks guys, I'll try! I'm thinking of putting a hot pink streak in her hair, probably right side (her left). Any thoughts? Would a different colour work better?

I put the pink streak in her hair. It's a bit more bubblegum than hot pink, but I think it looks okay.

Just got to neaten up the base edge, varnish her and put a grass tuft or two on. Oh, and paint the rest of the squad...

I suspect I'm a bit late, but I've had quite a bit of success with contrast Gryph Hound Orange. The pigment in the paint is very strong and vibrant, and easy to paint with.

Not at all! Is that Gryph Hound over Wraithbone? I haven't done much painting with contrasts yet, but I'll get to it eventually...

Yup, over Wraithbone, it looks really nice. That's been the foundation of my Kabalite project, and I even mastered painting the vehicles with it by drybrush stippling.

Here's some work in progress. First 'proper' attempt at an army, so obviously limited by my brush skills.

Looks great! I'll definitely have to look into Gryph Hound orange, then.
