Hi all.
A Friend of mine has bought a Tau army in an attempt to get into 40k (played the PC games for decades) and I am really trying to help him to get into the hobby.
He wants to pain them the Ocre/Sand colour of the T'au Sept.
I am a pretty experienced painter so know a lot of things (such as a Air Paint Spray etc).
What I want is a spray/Rattle can that gives a good base colour for that Sept which will work on Vehicles etc (so the base colour as just a spray thats all) Cant seem to find any spray that is a similar tone.
I dont want to send him down the route of Air Spray or Painting a certain base then washing it all over(will end up messy)...although that could work on infantry).
Pic for the base colour (or close enough) what I am talking about.
So, any advice for what Spray/Rattlecan to use for the base colour?

Personally, I use Krylon for my priming, here is a link to their browns:

I think Metallic Copper or Amber might be the closest; the undersuits can probably be gained by primer + agrax earthshade.

Zandri Dust would definitely be the go-to choice, IMO. It's the closest you're likely to get in an appropriate spray paint. If you're dead-set on having that exact orange-brown color, you'll need to apply a basecoat manually after spraying. Even on large vehicles, it's not actually that difficult to get good results fairly quickly if you're using a properly-sized brush and thin the paint appropriately.

I have a feeling you're going to fall for zandri dust once you've actually tried it out. It's one of the best colors in the range IMO.
It's neutral enough so that your models don't look like they're from the golden age of miniature painting (w/ goblin green bases and use of many contrasting colors), while being solid enough to be used for general coverage. It also serves well as base color to accept other lighter colors on top of it, particularly those usual suspects (i.e. flashgitz yellow will only need about 2-3 thin coats as opposed to 5-7 thin coats).

Zandri or Wraithbone would be a solid choice.

I echo the sentiment of Zandri Dust.
I would typically lightly prime using basic grey primer or Corax White from games Workshop, and then do Zandri Dust afterwards.

well, if you do go for the GW colour you wont find it in the web shop.
dunno if it is permanent or not but all base colour primers are removed.

Hi,
I would recommend you to take a look into graffiti spray paint,
these two brands which have two different lines
.MONTANA COLORS
1/ 94 2/ Hardcore
MONTANA CANS
1/ Gold 2/ Black
For hobby painting i would recommend the number 1s, less pressure much more colors
cheers
edit: BTW they are three times cheaper than GW sprays and better quality.
and you need to use it over a primer
