Subject: I really struggle to see well enough to paint once the sun goes down

Is this normal or is there something I can improve with my setup? I just bought new bulbs that were twice the lumen/watt and it didn't really make a noticeable difference. I had to stop painting around 9pm when I was happy to keep going, my accuracy just plummeted because I couldn't see properly. I should note it's more to do with darkness/shadows than not being able to physically see.
Setup:

Congratulations. You are getting old (said my optician, the prick). I have a cool light on my painting station but honestly I find a head lamp far more effective. Simple LED one.

I have. But as I said, it's not so much me not being able to physically see the model, it's more to do with too much shadow, not enough light.

Utilizing Careful Highlighting
|
If its a glare/depth of shadow issue, could you try using more general room lighting, but indirect, and/or moving the lamps back further? Alternately, get something like the big chicken brooder lamp (WalMart has them here in hardware, no idea if Tescos or whatever the British equivalent is would have them), put a daylight bulb in it, and possible a bit of wax paper or other translucent media for a filter or some other similar way of getting the light "softer" and more spread out? I know that sort of thing is the usual suggestion when mini photos get heavy shadow issues which is what it sounds like you're having...

Perhaps more ambient, room lighting would help. Wild speculation, but if lack of sunlight is the issue, you might have trouble with a bright light source coupled with the rim surrounding light.
Maybe try more ambient light, instead of focussing light on the model?

I use 3 Ott lights but they are extremely expensive and I only have so many because I found them on clearance more than once. They are “true daylight bulbs” and when I bought them 10 years ago they were great. But in today’s world this light halo is like a £50 solution that’s amazing.

I too struggle with this issue because of extensive eye damage. What I found very helpful in my case was adjusting lighting directions. Try to point your lights more towards the direction you are painting to. In the case of your desk picture, try moving those lamps so that they point away from you, instead of pointing towards you. A headlamp is a good suggestion as well, since a headlamp will automatically point the light to your painting direction.
Think of it like the headlight of a car. they point towards the direction you are trying to pay attention to (the road ahead). Increasing ambient light is nice, but it'll never be as effective in terms of lux generated vs actual optical benefit.
Here's a pathetic illustration that tries to explain the lamp moving thing visually.

I've replaced all my painting room lights with 9w LEDs and my two desk lamps have daylight 6500K lamp bulbs, 5w IIRC.
I position one from the side to overhead, the other on the floor pointing up and towards the model.

I only paint to advanced tabletop, but it's Ott light (from the right) and room lights on. LIghts are similar to tauist's drawing.
You could also do non-detail work at night, such as prep, priming, washing, etc. Depends on how many miniatures you can work on at the same time.
Or you can work on terrain -- less accuracy needed!

I do all my painting through an illuminated magnifier, no shadows or dark spots to worry about, highly recommend!

I have a magnifying lamp similar to yours, but find using it totally destroys my depth perception so its a liability more than an asset in my case. YMMV as usual.
Its like losing one eye and finding you cant pour coffee to your cup without spilling it.. or struggling to light a cigarette

I find as long as i can see what i'm painting with both eyes the depth perception is fine, I go as far as to position the paint im using in the magnifiers field of view so I dont need to adjust my eyes each time I need a refill.

If shadows are an issue diffusion would help. Putting direct light on a model will cast shadows in a way natural light doesn't. The brighter the light the deeper the shadows too.
Using baking paper/grease proof paper in front of the light will help diffuse it somewhat. Just don't put it on the light though, as if the light gets hot you're creating a fire hazard.
Look up light diffusers for photography on Amazon and they might be able to help

I ordered a magnifier lamp but honestly, it gave me a headache and made me feel dizzy. I'm sending it back.
I have decided to just go all in and order the Neatfi XL, which is regarded as the best light for miniature painting, it's expensive but worth it from what I've read. https://smile.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B084SSGJJT/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

The Heamar Daylight D35500 Lumi Task Lamp I linked to has a similar spec but is a bit cheaper. It comes with a desk clamp but you can also buy a floor stand separately (which is what I did).
Looking back on my order, the one I got was actually this one, which is more expensive (£140):

£95 was about my absolute limit, it was recommended on the minipainting Discord so just went for it. The more expensive one you own does seem a bit better but I can't justify another £50. I can't see the lumen listed on your one though, 2200 is insane on the one I bought and should be more than enough. Yours has 3 more LEDS and 5" wider shade which is nice, but 20" should be plenty. If I can't see with this beast then I need to go see another specialist lol.

I got 2 lamps, with adjustable heads, so I can position both from both sides.
Try to position your lights in different ways to get rid of shadows. For example, position lamps kidna behind your head, so the lamp shines in the direction your are facing.

Recently, I built a new painting area. It's basically a plank hanging over everything with around 3m of LED-string on it. That, spread out over the painting area, means that I finally have enough light without annoying shadows.

Yes the main light in the room looks pretty dull.
I’m no expert but I think a low watt ceiling light with bright spot lights on desk will create bright spots from the spot light and then everything else will look to dark and will screw with your eyes. I have that problem anyway if I paint in my dining room which is warmer lighting.
Creating a brightly lit room with lamps to the created a bright spot where you are painting works best for me.
Also isn’t cool lighting on the blue spectrum?

I have a pair of these really bright LED floor lamps - one about 6" behind and 6-12" to the side of each shoulder seems to work well for me. I also have a pretty bright daylight bulb in the main room light.
