I like the Salamanders for them being Lawful Good goody two-shoes characters. They actually care about civilians.

Problem: I do not like their chapter colors. Coupled with their reds and golds, they look like Christmas trees. But I still want them to look like proper Salamanders.

I'm thinking of using a near-black kind of green. On the darkest parts, I'll use a saturated black-blue and on the highlights I'll use a Dark Angels kind of green that's nearing white.

Thoughts?

I would go for a super high contrast main green, being mostly black with bright green highlighted portions. Keep the red to a minimum, accent areas only, then go super high contrast with the gold probably in NMM but this obviously depends on your needs. Check out bohun miniature painter on Instagram. His adrax agatone exemplifies this scheme perfectly.

The original Rogue Trader era Salamanders were painted by drybrushing a dark green over black, apparently. Forgeworld's Horus Heresey colour scheme was also much darker than the 40K version. If you're using GW paints, the Citadel base paint Nocturne Green and the layer paint Vulcan Green were made for Horus Heresey salamanders. I don't have the latter, but Nocturne Green is a very dark, cool green that's quite close to black.

I use Caliban as a base and kabalite layer not tree green but more dark lizard. Still undecided on if I want to glaze or pin wash to soften it.

But heavy drybrushing(2 diff shades of green) over black would give you the really deep green you want.

Useful replies; informative! I exalted every post. ^_^

I'm thinking of basing everyone in a saturated blue that's almost black. (Well, kind of black but with a hint of blue.) And then drybrushing on green like what you guys said. (Maybe along the style employed by Midwinter Minis in his "speed painting Ultrmarines" video.)

I'm kind of confused about the highlight though---should I put in an white-ish green or a yellow-greenish green?
