Subject: What are the closest equivalents to the old GW inks? (ESP. Flesh Wash)

I can find washes and even glazes these days, but simple ink? I need your help.
I’ve just used up the last of my GW Flesh Wash, Chestnut ink and Black Ink working on Halloween props, and I can’t find anything that really looks like Flesh Wash. Does anyone currently sell equivalents to those colors? I can’t seem to replicate Flesh Wash with the kind of conventional inks I’m finding at the craft store (Michael’s, in case another store has better selection and I just don’t know about it).
I tried using Ogryn Flesh and some Army Painter washes, but I’m using them with glue and water to stain wood and the premade washes are just pooling up and making streaks and patches.

I’ve not pulled the trigger to order replacements myself, as I still have some life left in the pot of Blue Ink I use for all my Ultras.
But https://herrickgames.com/coat-darms/ is a name that was recommended to me for a company that caries the old Coat d’arms paints that used to be the ones GW re-branded as theirs.

Oh the old Flesh Wash. . . Currently I'm using a lot of GW Seraphim Sepia, which is pretty close. Flesh Wash had a little more warmth, iirc. Possibly mixing something with the Sepia could get you there. I'd look in to that.

I have not tried these inks or this store but this is listed as an option for folks who like the older gw inks
The brand is coat d’arms or however it is spelled.

Thanks, guys. I think my FLGS carries some Coat D’Arms, so I’ll see if I can buy some there first.
Valkyrie, does Vallejo sell inks?

I came close-ish mixing some red ink into some brown and black. (I’d been using black in every mixture.) The warmth was very important to the look I was going for. I’ll have to get more Flesh wash-colored ink to finish the project satisfactorily.

I’ll let you know how it works out, but I’m not planning to use it to paint models. I’m using the colors to stain wands. Made thirty wands way back when the 7th book dropped, and now that my son is having a Harry Potter party, 30 more. Unfortunately, I left a batch of wands outside to dry and we had some unexpected rain. I tried to fix them, but was out of flesh wash. I’ll have to go get some flesh wash soon, but the party is this Saturday, so the flesh wash will be used for my nephews’ wands near Thanksgiving. I might also use it for ornamental Golden pieces with some future floor wax, depending on what the next project is.

If you are looking to stain wood, have you looked at wood stains/sealer/varnishes? For what we pay for the tiny little hobby pots, a quick trip to home depot or a woodworkers supply place should get you a lot of options.

Which era of Flesh Wash are you looking to replace? What does the pot look like, specifically? 17ml tall hexpot with flexible lid, or 12ml clear hard plastic with rigid black lid?
If it's the latter, Coat D'arms washes and inks are nothing like the 2000's GW inks (made in France). For those I'd go for artist acrylic inks. The CD stuff is a better match for the 90's era (made in the UK) original GW range, from what I've seen.
For 2000's era Black Ink, the closest analogue I've gotten my hands on is Reaper's Brown Liner. Despite the name, it's not brown, at best a warm black. Not the same consistency, but it thins a treat and is highly pigmented. But if you need large quantities for mostly staining, artist's acrylic inks are the place to be.

I have and use quite a few Cote D Arms paints including the washes: 137: Ink Wash - Chestnut (Flesh Wash); 138 Ink Wash - Red (Red Ink), and their version of Armour Wash. They work and look just as good as the old hex pot era GW paints. The paints are all basically 'layer' paints in today's parlance, and seem both thinner and with slightly less pigment than current paints, so they work and cover differently depending on the paints. When I combine my old GW hex pot leather paint (two thin coats please!) with CDA Chestnut Ink, I get a nice deep leather color. Just like when I started painting in 2nd Ed 40k.
I'm slowly replacing my GW colors with CDA and other brands, for continuity, and for life extension - the CDA paints last longer in the pot. Like my dozen or so GW old school hex pots that still have paint, still mix easily, and have not dried out yet (armour wash, jade green, deadly nightshade, regal blue, snakebite leather, space wolf grey, to name a few)

I used to use a pot of Chestnut Ink over a lot of my golds to give them a warmer tone. These days I use Guliman Flesh contrast paint.
A lot of the old CDA inks/washes were really glazes they way they flowed. Similar to how the Contrasts work. But GW’s modern washes don’t tint the same, they just head to the recesses and act like actual washes.
Both have their place.

Oh yeah, Guilliman and Skeleton Horde contrast are really good for the same and similar applications.
I feel like I always got a good 'stain' effect from the Chestnut Ink, and I would paint it onto the middle areas of a belt, leaving the snakebite leather as the 'highlight'. It definitely is not the "devlan wash" over the entire model type of wash.
