Subject: Lamenters - the project log!

Troubled By Non-Compliant Worlds

How it began?
2 Tac Boxes, a Stormraven and a promise not to go insane with the toy-buying and the tiny expensive brushes.
How it's going.
Stealing models from other lists to give the chequy. Today it's a Predator, tomorrow (or next week or month) it's a Terminator Captain. I'll upload some pics of the dreaded Chapter iconography later once I find the ones that turned out the best so no one makes fun of me. For now, enjoy a WIP of a tank turning from poop brown into rancid mustard. I actually painted this last night, it took maybe four or five hours. I also was tired and forgot the turret, lolwhoops. This is literally countless layers (no really, I'd didn't count) of Averland Sunset over Mournfang Brown, primed black. There is no physical or spiritual way to paint yellow by brush except this method of many many layers of very thin paint. Anything else is just asking for trouble. I've never used an airbrush, nor coloured primers, so I don't know what those are like, but if painting yellow by brush; many layers. Many many layers. This will get an all over wash of Nuln Oil after I pick out details and contrast colours, some recess lowlighting and then we'll clean up the yellow and go from there.

Oh and a Dreadnaught!
Been working on this too, my HH project is pretty close to being done so I came back to finish this model off. It's not done yet either, but it's getting close. I found an old Eldar transfer sheet that had a bunch of hearts on it so I've been making good use of them too.

I thought it looked a little gaudy, but a lot of those decals are going to get weathered over. I don't like using a ton of chequy on vehicles because then they look like taxi cabs, but it turned out okay here. Will be even better once they're worn away. Lamenters have very few Dreads and/or fun equipment so everything is going to be weathered and beaten to hell.

As someone who has also painted some amount of yellow, is there a main reason you aren’t going with “prime white” or “prime averland sunset spray primer”?

Personally I swear by a pink undercoat for yellows! It's such a tricky colour, the undercoat makes a huge difference in my opinion.

Yes, I typically avoid white primer like the plague because while it gives good pop to the colours applied afterwards, it also makes it extremely annoying to recess shade. I like using black brush-on primer because I usually don't have to recess shade afterwards and I prefer the coverage of a brush vs a spray can. I don't like coloured primer for the same reason I don't like white, you have to come back and recess shade areas that you could have just left black. When I really want that extra colour from a white prime, I'll do a heavy drybrush of white over the black primer, that way my recesses stay black, but the raised bits and panels can be white. Now as to why I didn't go for that method here, well I'm not sure. I started this Lamenters army years ago and only just got interested again in the last year or two, so I'm just going by the method I wrote down when I started. I may have wanted to keep the yellow from getting too bright, which to me says Imperial Fists instead of pale mustard as they're calling it for Lamenters. Pink?! For yellows?! Now that I would like to see, sir!

Got some work done on the Dread, and also pictured is a Captain from the original batch from years ago. You can't really see it because phone camera = potato, but I did actually line highlight the Captain. That's not a technique I typically use a lot, but there ya go. Also, don't make fun of my chequy! They look great from across the game table. If it's my turn and you're out getting chips.
I'm going to fix up the base next and then I think I'm going to call this a done Dread. I might paint him up a banner and install a magnet for it, but... I've never been big on banners. I mean, it's bad enough these guys go into battle without helmets. Plus Lamenters got all their bling stolen by the Minotaurs so... Maybe no banner.

Well I think once that ink on the base dries, it's some varnish and done for this Dread. Then it's on to that tank next.

I love having bits again. I found enough spare parts to build a 6 man Dev squad armed with missile launchers so I'll be adding them to the lamentations that must eventually come when I go to paint their badges.
I've also got six Assault marines painted in Death Company colours. They're just AMs though. I have this theory that since the Lamenters are codex compliant and uses less bling, along with less cool gear, that I should play them using the SM codex. The lore says that the Lamenters don't suffer from the Black Rage, so I figure they shouldn't get the sweet bonuses from it either. Newer lore says they are starting to get it, and that the Chapter Master has BR pretty bad. So to accommodate this fluff I decided to paint the AMs in Death Company black to show that some of their dudes are succumbing to the Black Rage, while in typical Lamenters fashion not getting any benefits.
In fact, a lot of the theme with this collection is based on the Lamenters not having cool stuff or catching any breaks. You'd think that would make it a crap army to collect, but it's turning out to be quite fun. I have a bunch of Terminators and a Land Raider Crusader on the shelf that aren't assigned an army yet, and I was thinking of using a Terminator as an HQ. Then I decided against it because I don't think the Minotaurs would have taken all the Lamenters gear and been like "we'll leave one suit of Indomitus for some random Captain of yours to use". Same goes for the Land Raider. I'm also not using Scouts because the Penitent crusade seems to still be ongoing, and I think I'm going for a more historical theme anyway, aiming for shortly after their incarceration for the Badab War. Which is a shame because I have a bunch of Scouts I'm not using too!
Alas...
Anyway, pics to come later. Still haven't worked on the tank any more, but I got distracted by bitz, converting a Sigmarite into a Chaos Lord, and then I came to the horrible realisation that hobbyists hate most. I'm going to have to rebase my army to match the new additions. It's okay, I think I have a plan! And lots and lots of flocking...

So... I did work on the tank but here are pictures of a Lamenters Techmarine. Haha, whoops. I actually built and painted this dude years ago but then he sat on a shelf for a long time. I've given him some fresh paint and the chequy. He was missing his backpack and most of his gubbins so I made him a backpack from bits. I think he just needs some weathering, his base obviously and then done. Another Lamenter joins the penitent crusade!

The tank!
Finally got it done just now after slogging away on it for most of last night. A bit of varnish and she's ready to hold down her section of the shelf. Erm, uh, battleline, yeah...

I love the quartered Techmarine! Good way of tying him into the army in a stronger way. I might consider stealing that for my own schemes.

All the yellow in these figures in my blog were undercoated in pink, and then multiple thin shades of yellow build variation in shade. You can especially see the difference in the yellow safety vest, where the bright (intending to be read as fluorescent but I don't have fluorescent paint) yellow was simply putting enough layers on that you couldn't see the pink underneath, and the more mustard-y shades are what you get from the pink undercoat.

Thanks, the Techmarine was fun to paint, even if all I had to do was some layering and touch ups. He does kind of look like a Howling Griffon now though.
Okay, I see about the pink, that's neat.
