I have painted some metallic red and need an appropriate wash, I have bright red was but it need to to be darker for the recesses, any recommendations from any brand?

I suppose I could mix some brown shade in but not sure if that will do what I want

Thanks

I've always used Coat D'Arms Red Ink Wash over Blood Angels Red, which provided a nice darkening of the panels and recesses. But that might be too subtle (and you may not want a staining of the metallic).

Flesh Tearers Red Contrast (diluted with Contrast Medium) is a very dark and saturated Red that, if applied carefully in the recesses, would work well, I think (but I'd test it).

Aside from those, I'd lean toward Agrax Earthshade (a brown/black wash), Devlan Mud (similar), or Army Painter Dark Tone. Those are all dark brown though, and not red. As with any, test it on some samples either in the creases or brushed over, to make sure it doesn't stain the whole thing.

I like carroburg crimson from gw. It's a deep red that adds a nice rich shadow. That's if they still make it these days. I've had my pot for about 8 years.

So i dont know how you are doing your metalic red, im assuming you are using some sort of clear red over a metalic base?

I’m doing my own paint scheme necrons, mostly colour shift but with metallic red areas, I’m using Caesar red from the green stuff world metallic colours range

You can use a purple wash to add depth to the shadows in order to retain the red tone without going down the road of doing black/brown washes that will wash out your red a lot more.

You can also try using a blue wash or a green wash, but only applying it to the crevices if using an acrylic wash or try a blue or green oil wash and again only apply it to the crevices but blend it out towards the centre of the panel.

Green is the complementary colour to red, so can work for a shade when applied as either a preshade or a transparent colour over the red.

Blue isn't complementary, but can give a deep contrast to your crevices that makes the reds pop more. I used blue preshading on my blood angels and I liked the effect, and Forge World used to use blue preshading on their metallic red thousand sons.

Blue and green shades can also give you the "cool shadow warm highlight" effect that will mean your shadows contrast in value, contrast in colour and also contrast in warmth.

Purple is a bit more of a middle ground, and can give you the nice deep shadows without straying too far from the red, and in some cases can be applied all over without having such an extreme variation in the tone of the red as you'd get from a blue or green shade (which I prefer only applied in the shadows rather than as an all over wash). I used a purple wash over some of my red Lizardmen models.

Im assuming then you are applying with an airbrush right?

Either way, what i was gonna get at was, you can try preshading if the red you are applying is transparent.

Its a trick i use when i paint 30k tsons. I base black, then go gold, then highlights in silver, then wash the entire model twice, once in gloss nulin oil, then once in regular nulin oil THEN apply the red over all of that. If its transparent, you will see the shading under the transparent paint.

I'll echo 'skink here; deep purple and dark blue washes work really well on red. I don't find red washes darken the colour enough to give a decent contrast to the base colour, which tends to emphasise the highlights more making it look too pink or orange, depending upon how you are highlighting it.
