So this is a first for me. Just finished building and painting the biggest model I ever have, and now I am moving in to an AOS project. Previously painted a small gloomspite gits army but other than that no AOS stuff, but now I have got together a 2000 point kruleboyz army.

I have never designed an army that I didn’t own, bought it all and built and painted it especially for that army. All my other armies (too many) were bully up over time. This way gives me a chance to design a specific theme and select painting and modelling challenges for them.

I started off with the dominion box, added units I thought were cool and wanted to paint, I love the creepy grimey look of the kruleboyz and gobsprakk was a must. I am not intending to do anything fancy with the colour schemes, the grubby browns and greens with bright shields is appealing, both for the look and to paint.

The main advantage to building the army all at once is that I can base it thematically from the start and this for me will be the biggest modelling challenge. I have never really done much with bases and the idea of making swampy bases with water effects and depth should be lots of fun.

I have been watching a lot of Marco Frisoni stuff and playing with value sketches and oils inspired by his work, and am basically stealing his method for bases.

First off the army,

For the bases I needed hollow empty bases to fill with swampy stuff. Green stuff works do a range that covered most my needs but not the bigger bases. So I got cutting. Using an exacto blade and the angle of the inside of the rim I cut out the middle of the bigger bases, trimming and sanding it down. The freed up rims were surprisingly resilient and I worried they would break but the flexed and we’re easy to work with, sanding and trimming. They were then glued to thin plasticard which was also trimmed and sanded down. The end result is still quite bendy but hopefully by the time the model and basing stuff and water effect has all been added they will be solid.

Started work on the first mob, fist pics is materials. Got cork bark for pet supplies, various mud and water effects from ak interactive, wire for pinning also got grass tufts somewhere, the rotary tool and plenty glue. Took a whole evening to build and pin onto the bases one mob. This is likely going to be a long project.
