Stalwart Veteran Guard Sergeant

Have been away from the hobby for years and years. Recently discovered kill team so thought I would share my journey. The idea of being able to collect and game with different factions without having to commit hundreds of dollars and countless hours is extremely appealing to me.
So to start things off I have begun to mock up some poses for an intercessor kill team. The idea is to kitbash between the intercessor, assault intercessor and the deathwatch veterans box.
First operative up is the assault intercessor veteran sargeant. This is all blu-tacked together for now while I decide on the pose, but pretty happy with the result. Only thing I'm not sure of is the deathwatch shoulder pad, the letters seem to fade and distort around the edges of the pad - might switch it out for a standard intercessor pad.

Managed to get the pose on the gunner intercessor operative. This is the infernus heavy botler which will act as a "counts as" bolter and grenade launcher. Getting the arms to fit were a bit fiddly but managed to get there in the end.

Hi there. Promising stuff already. I have also switched to skirmish games due to higher playability without sinking a ton of money in. Much more fun too!
Have you decided on a color scheme yet?

Thanks! Yes I've heard a lot of great things about the game, the alternating turns seem like a much better mechanism to me.
For the colour, not sure yet - thinking maybe a traditional deathwatch with black and silver or a custom chapter with dark blue and silver. I'm really feeling that ultra gritty grimdark style, will show some inspiration down the road.

Thinking of doing a re-pose on the gunner with squat legs - seems to be a bit more preoperational than the running legs. Kinda torn between the two! What do you think?

Did a pose for the power mace, this is just a "counts as" intercessor warrior - but I liked the mace in the kit so much I found it tough not to use.

The classic marine heads on the intercessors are looking good.

Yeah I'm a fan! They are a bit more squashed in the deathwatch veterans box and seem to bit a bit better - if only they were a bit smaller.

Next up is the assault intercessor warrior. I've snipped off the targeting system off the backpack and like how it keeps the model quite minimal. Will do throughout.

I'm digging your kitbashes! Regarding the HB, I prefer the braced pose legs, more appropriate IMO.
Are you going to be fielding these as a Compendium Deathwatch team? Or as Interecession? Automatically Appended Next Post: I'm digging your kitbashes! Regarding the HB, I prefer the braced pose legs, more appropriate IMO.

Thanks! Yeah I am thinking the squat legs as well. Looks a bit more realistic I think.
Going to be playing them as the intercession squad. From watching a couple of battle reports, the team looks pretty strong! I've heard mixed things about fielding teams from compendium.

Next up is another intercessor warrior - pretty simple pose but happy with the result. For some reason I just don't seem to take with the classic two-hand bolter stance.

Grenadier ready - pose loooks pretty simple but works well with the group I think. Once I start applying some detail, eg: seals, piping, battle damage, etc. - I think it will look much better.

Playing around with some detail now, sketching out some piping with guitar wire and a purity seal. Once I get comfortable I might try carving out some battle damage. I've also recently purchased a roll maker from greenstuff world to sculpt out some better piping https://www.greenstuffworld.com/en/69-roll-maker. I'm getting very heavy iron hands vibes - which works extremely well with that grimdark style. Going to see how that turns out.

Have been experimenting with bases.
I spent a bunch on pigments but have found I don't really like that very blanket monotoned look. I like the dust effect, but I think a lot of the depth is lost.
So I tried a very simple rubble and mud style base and here is how it turned out.
Here's the recipe:
Modeling:
1. Cut down some 1mm cork, glue it on and trim accordingly
2. Glue down some guitar strings, I like to experiment with different diameters
2. Lay down some Vallejo desert sand earth texture
3. Use PVA to glue on some sand in
4. Paint on some Citadel Martian Ironeath
5. Stamp the models legs down onto the base to push down some of the paste, which creates a nice placement for the model later on
6. Once that's all dry, I'll go for a second pass of sand
7. Spray on some matte varnish to seal the texture in
Painting:
1. Prime with Black
2. I like to tape the edges of the base with masking tape
3. 2 thin coats of VGC Charred Brown
4. Dry drush VMC Burnt Umber
5. Leadbelcher on the pipes
6. Thin down some Citadel Agrax Earthshadow all over the base
7. Put down some Citadel Nuln Oil on the pipes and small amounts in the surrounding area
8. Dry brush back on with VMC Burnt Umber
9. Dry brush metal areas with Iron Breaker
10. Sparingly dry brush of VMC Tan Earth
11. Extremely sparing dry of VMC Yellow Sand
12. Sparingly Citadel Nuln Oil wash in darker areas to create some depth
13. Citadel Technical Arcoat in the darker areas to create a mud or water effect
Some things I might try in the future:
- Combine step 12 and 13
- Use a satin varnish instead of a gloss to create less of a shiny effect
- Remove step 11 or darken it down a bit, might be a bit too bright
