Hey all,

Here is my latest effort… a feral vampire I purchased to use as a proxy Varghulf courtier in my FEC army. Unfortunately I was told by the guy in the store I would not be allowed to use him to learn the game at that location 😔

I’m a little bummed by that but, hey ho, I enjoyed painting this guy. I followed no guides or tutorials on this one and am quite happy with the way the purples and light creamy greens and yellows worked together. The sculpt was somewhat untidy and took some prep to get to a point I was happy with before starting to paint. I also had a disaster involving a stubborn piece of poster putty… ah well

Any comments welcome… particularly on how to improve!

Thats a really cool model, and the paintjob (including the base) looks really good and realistic. The colour pallet you use is very convincing.
While Im not suprised a GW store would not approve, its still a shame you could not use it.

Thanks for the input! I appreciate hearing what others think and it is a great boost when I get a compliment on the finished result like yours

It was disappointing to me I couldn’t use this guy but I am sure once I have my head around the rules and my stepson has finished his Stormcast Eternals he can see some action here at home (but judging by the said young fellas rate of painting that might be when I retire)

As for the colour, I knew I wanted a kind of purple and undead type skin so I started with a mid tone purple and gradually built up to a mix of purple and iorach skin…I also added some yellow for the final highlights. It was all a bit experimental and weird as nearly all of my other models I have roughly followed tutorials but this and my werewolf are all my own doing. What I am learning is that I seem to enjoy doing my own paint schemes more than following tutorials even if the process is a little nerve wracking and the result uncertain…

Anyway I am rambling, thanks for the feedback!

Yeah totally fair that GW stores don't allow proxies like that - even if the models are awesome.

Out of interest what were the cleanup problems that you had with the model in getting it ready to be primed and painted up?

That's a really well-painted miniature, shame that you could not use it at the store.

The only thing i think could be slightly improved is the hair on the back: it still looks a little flat imho, and would maybe profit from some even darker paint in the deepest recesses to give it some more spatial definition, but that is by no means a must.

Haha! I suppose I should have asked them first. Ah well I still enjoyed painting him.

The clean up problems started with assembly. At the point the torso joined the legs there was a rather large gap that needed a lot of filling. The claws on the hands were also very heavily distorted and I needed to carve away at a decent amount of resin to reveal the shapes properly. Actually, on the claw underneath the left wing there is still excess resin I missed but I felt I didn’t want to carve it away as I was nearly done painting the model when I spotted it!

I also had to sand and fill the arms themselves where they attached to the torso. In the end I think I managed to get it looking smooth enough everywhere but, yeah, definitely not just a case of gluing the four parts together and priming in this case.

Thankyou very much! It’s great to get that compliment!

I really agree with your observation about the hair actually! I think I might even do exactly as you suggest the next painting session. The hair was pretty much drybrushing and washes all the way and, although I am super happy with the colours, I always have this strange sense of it being such a lazy way to paint hahaha

Anyway, thanks for the input and feedback, very appreciated.

It's a great print, I've used the same for my Varghulf. Just be very careful with those teeth, they tend to break off at the slightest touch.

Great effort on the paintjob, too.

Will bear that in mind! Thanks for the compliment

I am now on the lookout for the Varskyr from the Cursed City box to use instead. Shouldn’t be an issue there hopefully…

Varskyr are awesome models and sign of how GW could really do some major updates to the Varghulf and other older varg units

Yeah I like the look of the Varskyr…just hope I can pick one up as a single unit soon. You are so right about FEC, it really needs some love for models. I still have my terrorgheist to paint (next in line) but it is hard not to notice how few models there really are in the FEC range. Apparently there are some new ghouls coming in the next Warcry set though?
