Wow, thats a beautiful veteran you've got there for your sons of orar. What's the name of that variant of gun? Your paint job and photos do the model more justice than the forgeworld website photos!

Moltar wrote:You continue to inspire me with your sweet skills. I do have one slight critique on your large scale soldier. I have never seen a silver on black m16. One could be customized but you didn't see any custom weapons back in Vietnam. It's just a slight critique, your mini still looks amazing. I just know m16's are generally all black.

Thats true, especially that time era. It would be all black, though the plastic part is shiny and the metal parts matte.

Not necessarily. They probably didn't start spraying the guns completely black until late in the war or after. The initial M16s that were given to troops were probably close to the way he has it painted on the model except maybe a little darker on the metal parts. The plastic was for sure black, but the metal color was closer to that of the aluminum it was made from.
The top most M16 in this picture is the earlier model fielded to troops. You can tell by the difference in the way the end of the barrel is with its three pronged flash suppressor.

Actually, if you see those in RL they are black still, just not the same black as now. I have been around LE/Military arms my entire life and have only seen silver on AR family rifles on modern rifles as an aesthetic choice, most commonly on the barrel.

Painting Battle Worn marines

remember to thin your paint

After a black undercoat the model was sprayed red. If you don't have an airbrush I’ll recommend a white or grey undercoat with a basecoat of blood red across the whole model. Note i have not glued the boltgun in place so i can paint it separately.

The white areas are then base coated with astronomican grey.

The red areas are washed with baal red and the white is highlighted with a mix of skull white and astronomican grey

The red is then highlighted and the areas where there are scuffs and scrapes on the armour with a mix (about 1:1:1:1) or blood red, mechrite red, blazing orange and bronzed flesh (dwarf flesh works if you don't have bronzed flesh)

More bronzed/dwarf flesh and blazing orange is added to the mix above so the ratio is now fleshrange:blood:mechrite 3:2:1:1

Metal areas are then picked out with boltgun metal.

The gold is base coated with tinbitz or a mix of scorched brown and shining gold. Then highlighted with shining gold.

A little mithril silver is added to the shining gold and used for a final highlight.
At this point you can highlight white areas white if you wish.

The freehand is planned out. Some people like to do a dot to dot, personally i use a series of thin lines

This is then filled out. This is a little wonky but it's only a table piece so doesn't matter really.

A mix of brown and black is lightly sponged on to create paint chips.

The model is washed liberally with devlan mud and gryphon sepia to simulate grime and muck.

The eyes are picked out in green and the model is based ready for battle.

Great tutorial indeed!

The technique you use for the red armour is really brave, I always assume it would look to mental to do stuff like that, but I might have a wee go with it!

The muck splats with the sponge is a bit wierd for me. looks like felt tip pen or something, but the overall effect is great, especially with the heavy use of wash, I like that myself.

I think the airbrushing definately saves a lot of time, but it wouldnt help me as I like to leave some of the black primer showing through right to the end so it takes ages to paint the first stages of colour without filling all the crevases. Might start trying completely different ways of painting on scrap models or random models I feel like buying for the experiment.

First of all, I've been following this blog for a while and I absolutely love your work.

And thank you so much for the tutorial! I was planning on doing a battle damaged BA army soon, and this tutorial fits what I was planning to do almost exactly. Plus it's easy to follow, quick, and to the point.

So thanks for being so freaking awesome!

it's the pro way of doing quick paint chips... it's not muck lol... FW use it all the time though it looks best on tanks...

Cool. Go for the none GW stuff as well I'd love to see what you do with an Avatars of War or Malifaux figure!

I'm new to Dakka and Inanimate mentioned to check out your work -- and holy cow, I've been browsing your work for about half an hour now and it's all amazing! I'm currently planning and building a White Scars army as I'm getting back into 40k and I've been looking for fairly simple but effective battle worn techniques and this one wins out hands down. It looks great and realistic and your work really brings out the reasoning behind "lots of thin layers" instead of a thick basecoat with drybrushed highlights.

Great work! I love what you did with the land raider too, by the way, it's fantastic! And this "table top standard" miniature was painted in less than an hour??? You're very inspiring!

How long has it taken you to get to this level??

You do great work. i am thinking of selling my 5000pts of marines and restarting with all the bells and whistles that are now available via forgeworld and the other web suppliers. Sons of orar was my first pick of chapters to paint and this is so inspiring.
