What do you think?

This is precisely what I do.

Goblin Green over black primer, wash with Thraka Green. It's incredibly easy and works great. I'll post a pic in a bit.

Yeah thats pretty standard, i think he meant the wash over metallics (which i tried and it was horrible).

Anywhere worth being

Ah I get it. So just paint the entire mini Boltgun, for instance, and just watch different areas to color them.

Seems like an unnecessary amount of work. At the point where you're doing multiple washes on each area, you might as well just paint each area individually.

Alpharius wrote:Can you list exactly how you painted that mini - it looks good!
Its easy ...
First spray a mini black
Second dry brush boltgun metal. It helps if you build this up very slowly, I actually have been known to leave a pot open over night to dry it out enough but normally an old half empty pot will be the right consistency.
Thirdly dry-brush mithrill silver over highlighted bits.
Note the dry brushing flat areas you should get a nice texture.
Fourth baal red wash the mini
Fifth more mithrill silver dry brushing on the on the pipe
Sixth paint the blazing orange with a very small brush
Seventh paint the stones black
Eighth paint the stones silver (leaving a black edge)
Ninth carefully add a a stroke of blue Vitrail Glass Paint. You could use a GW blue wash instead but I like this since it has a higher surface tension and only take a single application.
Final stage apply a semi matte glaze of your choice.

Yeah but the shine of the metal means that the model sort of highlights itself. Also nice tutorial there Tri.

Don't want to spam but here's some better pictures ...

Maugan was the first mini i tryed metal and washes; Shop rules all mini's need to be painted with at least two colours if you want to play there. Dry brushed and a little bit of wash so i could play the next day.

Taking longer on my second lord.

Went mad tracing round all the edges. Sad thing is he rarely gets a showing these days.

Bah, the Heavy Metal guys made a big deal about that sort of thing back when the Realm of Chaos books were in print. Note that I'm only upset because saying this means I'm old.

It's otherwise nice to see the 'ink over metallics' stuff revived again.

Any images would be great inspiration and much appreciated.

Someone mentioned using a wash over a wash a page or two back; how would gryphonne sepia primary wash go with an asurmen blue wash over it for a gold-blue Tzeentch-y feel? Asurmen blue over shining/burnished gold might work as well, but having tried gold weapons before, the effect isn't amazing, and i'm not sure how well they'd carry an asurmen blue wash as opposed to the badab black or devlan mud I usually use.

The washes other than gryphonne sepia don't work particularly well over gold or bronze paints in general, I experimented with them a bit while trying to sort out metallic ork skin.

Which is why i'm wondering about using asurmen blue over layered gryphonne sepia instead; how would that work?

Theres a good page on the GW website if you're looking for washes over a white basecoat. I screenshotted it below:

Is badab black similar to watered down black ink or chaos black?

found that -old- post after searching for glazes and find it really instructive.
20 years I haven't done any painting so are the washes like today layer or shade ?
also I remember something being called lavish back in time

That’s some impressive threadromancy!

GW refers to their washes as Shades these days. Their Contrast line of paints is an attempt at combining a basecoat and a wash, but in my opinion they work better when thinner down and used as glazes
