Thanks guys!

Took a break from painting yesterday to finish up the assembly of the display and get started painting. The house paint diluted with alcohol, water, and mini paints does triple duty as sealer, primer and basecoat for the dirt areas.

Plus the billboard, which isnt shown because I have been too lazy to go get it printed on tabloid paper...

It will cover an area from the far back left to about the middle where the top grey round thingie is.

Now onto the red buggies!

Okay... For God's sake... You've got a crank on the front of the right one to start it, and you put a damned turret from a Grot tank on the top of it.

It hurts me to see the way you, essentially, just hacked apart expensive FW kits to get these things.

....but I'll be DAMNED if I don't LOVE what you've done with them. Those are the absolutely best freaking buggies I've ever seen!

Funny thing is, I am not sure but I would bet a warbuggy is more points than the Tauros. I still don't own that book for some reason. But with Chimeras costing what they do I can't see the Tauros being more than 30 points.

Also, that turret fits perfects where the original would go.

Heh.

Forget "billboard!" That mountain on the lefft is just screaming for a ruined looking "HOLLYWIERD! sign. LOL

Is that cart part of the display, or will the board be removable?
I see the logic in using the cart. It's genius. You can carry all your stuff for the game (including snacks) and even include a little carrier for a folding chair. Just pust the cart from place to place and BAM! You're set.
My only concern is transportability TO, FROM and AFTER the event if you've got the base integrated into the cart.

Where's the tank bit from? I've not seen that before.

The cart is six pieces: The 4 legs, and the two trays. The trays are identical, but the display is built into the recess of the top one. So no it is not "removable" but they are basically one in the same.

The cart itself is easy to put together and take apart, which is what I will do to get it there. There is also a fancy handle with recesses for dice and a cupholder

You mean the tanker? If so that is just 3" PVC pipe. That whole this is scratch other than the battlewagon track links.

Yesterday I did most of the basics of the board. There are still a lot of small details to be painted, and there are a lot of things not attached to be painted (cacti, piggies, the two towers in the back, the ramps and crates over the front gap, the billboard etc etc). Im going today to print out the billboard but I think I am going to start the infantry as well. It will probably be a bit before I update with something good again, as it will be a couple days before I have anything worth looking at on 100 or so Orks.

It depends, but on the vehicles you've seen, the airbrushing is limited to basecoating. The only color I can think of other than the brown basecoat that was airbrushed is the olive green on the tanker and trukks. Everything else is by hand.

I discussed this with a friend the other day...the display is not as creative overall as the pirates, but it's mainly due to the size of the army. The pirates were a tiny army and the display was sort of 50/50 of the whole thing. The display wasn't to show off the army it was half of it. In this case I am dealing with a LOT more models and my hand is forced to create something that is more function than aesthetics. Hopefully it is still good enough, and the size of the army will make up for it.

From looking at it, you can't tell that it comes apart. In that case, it's even MORE genius (and I hope you're driving this to Adepticon yourself. LOL).
Great idea. I suspect we'll see a LOT more display bases integrated into carts in the future.

In regard to comparing it to the Pirate Display... I think you're talking Apples and oranges. I mean, I think you highlighted the differences perfectly, but I suspect this one is going to be at LEAST as good as the pirates, just in a different way.

Looking forward to the rest of your updates!

Well thanks, I am glad you think so. It's hard to look at your own work sometimes. Sometimes I wonder what movie directors think of their own movies, such as George Lucas and Star Wars.

Well, for most people it isn't an issue of toting it around. Most people that do a display do something like a picture frame or a flat surface which is easy to carry around. A cart is only necessary if you are doing something so large it is actually more convenient to build it into a 3x2 50lb plastic/rubber/whatever cart For most armies a simple rectangle matching the bases is enough to get the points and look very nice.

And yes I am going with a friend and it fits in the trunk of his car.

Went and printed out the billboard and mounted it on foamboard. Just eyeballing it right now. This is not where it will go (piggies go on the walkway), it will be up on legs, the bottom higher than the rocks in the background.

There is also a giant scrap metal skull and crossbones that will be hung in the top right corner.

Actually you can see the little hole the left "leg" will go into left of the board.

Wow, that display looks great. Are you planning on weathering and tearing up that billboard a bit? Seems a bit too pristine for the environment.

I wouldn't worry about what you stated earlier----comparing yourself to Pirates. It will be hard to top that----but this certainly will in its own fashion.

I'm amazed on how fast you pop those out. I consider myself a fast painter but to hear you say "I need to start painting my boyz" two weeks out of Adepticon would make me panic!

Yes it is just there to view the placement. I just glued the plasticard on 10 minutes before I took the picture.

Actually I have yet to start the boyz. Been getting caught up in the display. I need to stop and work on the display at the end because it is really the least time consuming and the little details dont add up as much. Going to start the infantry here in a few though.

But yes, I am still nervous. Two weeks out up until day of I get very nervous! Weekend of the con I live on Clif bars. Just trying to survive!

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

A lot of it is just practice and experience, painting models every day.

But I can tell you, back when I started, what made me the slowest was going slow because I was worried about making mistakes. So dont worry about making mistakes, and you wont make any, and youll go faster.

Sounds easier than it is, I know, but practice makes perfect.

I guess I would have to reference Office Space: "Our high school guidance counselor used to ask us what you'd do if you had a million dollars and you didn't have to work. And invariably what you'd say was supposed to be your career"

I never get sick of painting. My body has it's limits sitting at a desk but every day I wake up excited to work on something.

Yes, I had just glued it to the foamboard and slapped on some plasticard a few minutes before I took that picture. It will definitely be weathered. I tried to do some more in photoshop but it will be so much easier to do it with paint
