I know I'm far too charitable compared to other posters in this thread and just assumed the OP actually wanted to talk about the diversification that is both going on in the market place and for each individual hobbyist.
Silly me. It must be about hate.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better. |

that's nice of you, frozenwastes...
it sure didn't read that way to me...
if you want to talk diversification, there is no need to couch it in terms of money GW won't get from me...
if i buy an Infinity mini, that is money going to CB that never would have gone to any other company anyway, because no other company makes that mini i wanted...
diversification is great, but no new revelation...
i have been buying PP from day 1, same for Infinity, Dark-Age, Studio McVey, and many others...
these guys get my money, the same as GW, because they make an awesome product...
it isn't money taken away from GW, because it never would have gone to them in the first place, just like the money for yesterday's egg sandwich would never have gone to them...
that's the point...
diversity is beautiful ...
i love minis of all varieties, and buy whatever catches my eye...
cheers

I've found that (for me at least) this stage is followed by a sort of 'enlightmenment'- being able to appreciate what Games Workshop has done for the hobby without letting them swindling you, moving on to other games/ways of playing. Sort of an opening of horizons and appreciating that GW isn't the only game in town, and realizing that rage won't do much besides annoy the wastrels who are still GW fanboys.
Good luck.
Oh I am way past that stage. Like I said, I bought something I enjoy. I have no ill will toward GW anymore. I was angry. I pouted, I shouted, I regret how foolish I acted. That was a long time ago. Now it was just an idea that hit me like "wow, haven't bought 40K in ages I wonder why." Then I realize I have fun with other games I collect now.
Like I said, it was just an idea that passed through my head. No ill will at all. I guess reading my original post, it seems that way. Was just really tired, long day at work, long drive home. Didn't really come out like I thought it did.

In a couple years, GW will start releasing sandwich miniatures just to get at that $8.30.
Only they will cost $50, come with a 3 inch base, and require you to buy a box of tactical marines to get the pickle, tomatoes and leafy lettuce required to achieve WYSIWYG. Additionally, each one will be 120 points overcosted and useless in non-competitive lunches. They will be FAQed within 12 months to be turret mounted and have a random table for determining condiments.

I think the OP just wanted to start a thread that others would comment on so he took the easy route done a hundred times before just in a different shade of grey.
But maybe GW really did steal his girlfriend.
If that GW pub outside their main office in Nottingham were closer than my favorite sandwich shop it might be a different story altogether.

I spent money on GW today...
Bought my friend's Dark Eldar army at a fraction of the price since he hasn't touched it in uh... three years. And then bought the new DE Codex and an old metal Urien.
I also bought Njal on Tuesday... I like the models, and I enjoy the hanging out with my friends. Most of them don't have the funds to hop to other games, so we keep playing 40k. It's not been a bad run. I'm enjoying my Space Puppies and I hope to get in some fun with my new DE army.
The money goes towards hobby stuff, where I spend it is dependent upon what I'm able to play. There are so many games I enjoy playing, I just want to play.

I'm gonna be buying Warhammer 40k products for a very long time. I've given $100-$200 to GW in the past, but that was when I first started and didn't think about other alternatives. I don't buy anything from GW nowadays, since there are better options out there. They can keep doing what they're doing, and it honestly doesn't bother me.
I'll still be playing 40k whether they'll survive as a business or not. I'm doing this because its a hobby, I'm on this forum because its a hobby. If you let one company ruin what you're doing and think you have to buy something less satisfying because of that company and move onto something else unwillingly, then you're doing it wrong.

Technically, I have actually cost GW around $50,000 in the last year. This is an estimate, but the numbers should be about right.
I had a real problem with 7th edition and convinced 9 of my friends the new rules / Codex format was designed specifically for picking money out of our pockets. Now none of them will play the game or purchase any GW product. I believe they all spent around $2,500 annually, same as me, so that's around $25k right there.
At my FLGS, 7th edition caught on slowly. The really popular nights are 2nd edition and 4th edition night, which is where people are really focusing their attention now. People who participate are required to bring their own books, which (for most) means buying new ones. Rules + Codex for 2nd edition / 4th edition costs around $120 on eBay, and that's maybe 150 people there. It's safe to double that figure for lost sales on 7th edition Codexes these people are not buying.
So, that's about $50k not spent on GW. Who can beat that?

150 people coming out regularly to play 2nd and 4th is pretty awesome. The local 2nd ed revival group has 4 regulars. I can't come anywhere near your number for money redirected away from GW, but I did convince a local TO who didn't transition to 7th ed not to run anymore events for 40k (his 40k gaming buddies expecting him to spend a weekend running a 60 person tournament for a game he doesn't play is ridiculous). It's also the type of event that people say "for next year's X-con I'm going to make a new Tau army with those forgeworld battlesuits!" so I know it cost GW money losing a key organizer of local events. No one stepped up to run the event and the summer came and went without it. EDIT: Oh, the other thing I did is when I was hired as a consultant to help a game store set up new accounting software, I asked them about whether or not their margins would be better if they consolidated to fewer distributors and negotiated a better trade discount with their volume. They did so and GW wasn't willing to match the same rate and so they replaced the 40k and WFB nights with Magic: The Gathering organized play and reallocated the GW section to board games. I didn't tell them to stop carrying GW per se, but my suggestion of protecting their margins lead to it happening sooner rather than later. I suspect it was inevitable given how difficult it is for stores selling at Canadian MSRP to compete against US based eBay sellers.

solkan wrote:"I don't spend money on GW" looks exactly the same whether you're spending your money on a new laptop, backing some small company on Kickstarter, or giving that money to Mantic or Fantasy Flight Games for Star Wars stuff. Actually, it doesn't look the same. It doesn't look the same to GW, and it doesn't look the same to you either if you're buying something competitive like paint, as you just plain get more for your money. There have been loads of times over the last few years where I have really liked a new GW release. There have even been times where I have added stuff to my online basket, intending to buy it. But in the end I always decided against buying. It's usually the price that puts me off: £35 for 5 terminators (sad face). However, I think GW as a company also puts me off. For example: I really love the Valhalla Ice Warrior models. Shame they cost a fortune on ebay. But then GW brought them back! in metal! £21 for a ten man squad. That sounds like a bargain to me. I immediately added three boxes to my cart, and a couple more boxes of Steel Legion to boot... But in the end I just closed the page without paying. I didn't feel the joy and happiness of buying new miniatures. I just felt anxiety at the thought of 'reinvesting' with GW. Because I know £100 on infantry isn't enough. I'm gonna need tanks and flyers and a maybe a superheavy or two, and then I've gotta keep up with the rules and the codex books, not to mention play games with the rules (double sad face). And I know the whole time GW is going to be bumping the prices up and making me wish I'd never started in the first place. So I never did. I think that is money that they lost. It was a sale that was literally "in the bag" (or at least the virtual basket). If they'd just had a slightly less grubby track record, it would have been theirs. This week I bought a can of spray primer (army painter). I seriously considered going to GW and buying Skull White, which is cheaper, but I actually don't trust that it is really a primer. I'd rather pay more and wait longer to have a brand I've never used before mailed to me, than buy from GW. That is how much trust remains. I also added £30 of Infinity stuff to that order. I think if GW had treated me better as a customer, I probably wouldn't even be playing infinity, and I'd still be buying paint and models off them. It's their loss though, not mine.

The rest of your post was "I thought about buying a can of GW spray paint, but then decided not to."
If a waiter or waitress does something that you don't like, not leaving a tip doesn't tell them what they did wrong. Same goes for not buying a particular company's products--not buying GW is not buying GW.
What you think inside your head, and how you feel about it, doesn't show up on the ledger sheets. If the software is rigged up in a certain way, a tally somewhere may have registered that a can of paint was added to a shopping cart, and then that the cart never reached sales, and that'll end up an anonymous point in a report about transaction completion rates for the web store.

Well that is somewhat trivializing what I said. I did also mention at least £165 worth of miniatures too. But if you'd rather talk about the can of paint for convenience then ok...
If a waiter or waitress does something that you don't like, not leaving a tip doesn't tell them what they did wrong. Same goes for not buying a particular company's products--not buying GW is not buying GW.
It's not an isolated incident though. If a waiter used to get lots of tips in 2009, but then abruptly stopped receiving tips in 2010 after developing tourettes syndrome and repeatedly telling diners to "feth off". Then I would expect that person might be able to form some rudimentary hypothesis of what went wrong.
GW can review their figures from year to year and see how their actions affect sales. They should also have some means of reviewing the health of the market and their market-share. Losing customers to competitors is not going to look the same as losing customers to ebola.
What you think inside your head, and how you feel about it, doesn't show up on the ledger sheets. As it happens, I did receive an email from them reminding me that I hadn't completed my order for the Imperial Guard. So I imagine there will be a record of it somewhere. They can read into it what they like. But its not like they don't already get a ton of complaints from disgruntled customers all the time explaining what is wrong. GW's solution seems to be to shut down their forum, get rid of their facebook, plug their fingers in their ears and go "la la la".
It's really not my job to help them make money. If they value me as a customer (and people like me) then they should research what I like, what I'm willing to spend, or just keep trying things to tempt me back. If they don't value me as a customer then obviously they can't have my money.

I can say that well most of my plans have been put off or completely cancelled just due to the sheer cost and lunacy id have to put myself through to get a reasonable army painted so here it goes
Rule-book: was gonna pick up but i just cannot justify the cost for what is just a book
Imperial Guard: was gonna start up a guard army after reading some fairly entertaining guard novels, after calculating the costs of startup for just a basic amount of stuff i couldn't justify it so shelved the idea
Necrons; was gonna restart the army, but honestly again the cost so im selling what ive got left off
Space marines: can decide on a chapter and also ive got maybe 700-800 points in bare plastic and am weighing up the options on continuing or selling im leaning maybe 70/30 selling
the amount of money i spend on the hobby as a whole has more or less trickled to nothing from games workshop. anything i do invest will most likely be flames of war or something else cool, possibly mantic stuff if their new plastic scifi stuff comes out good
also just to note my relationship now with GW is basically limited to their novels, which i either borrow or get second hand. their novels are great but the character and fluff just doesnt really match up to the rules or to their model kits which is really a let down for me

I can't speak just for today.
I have spent 400 dollars in this last month on the Judge Dredd game. If I hadn't started on this game, this money would have went either to GW (doubtful) or towards nothing in the tabletop wargames category.
My last purchases from GW was the Imperial Knight, and codex, as well as a bunch of Scions, the AM codex, and the Mt codex. After purchasing all of this stuff, I realized I would have to spend at least double the amount already spent to put together a full Scion/Knight army. The IG stuff wasn't as bad, since I already have 100+ Vostroyans, plus all the tanks and Chimeras I needed. Once I realized how much I still needed to spend for a Scion army I decided to just get out b4 sinking even more. I had easily spent 400 dollars (same as above), and couldn't field the army I wanted.
Now to look at my purchases on the Dredd game. I have the boxed game, which gave me ALL the rules I need, plus 2 gangs (Justice Department & Street Gang). I also have the Heroes of the Justice Department, which gives me all the characters/mercenaries I need for the justice department. I have the Angels gang, a skysurfers gang, A Cursed Earth Desperados gang, The Dark Judges, Judge Cal & retinue, Dredd on Lawmaster, plus a few other mercenaries. I was also lucky enough to pick up a few other gangs in a trade.
Now here's the real kicker. If I spend the same amount already spent on JD, I will have EVERYTHING currently on the market for this game. Granted, all my purchases have been from game stores on ebay, or other online discounters, but still that's not an awful amount of money for all the goodies. I see tremendous value in that.
I got into GW back in 1999. Since then, I have spent at least 2,000 dollars a year on GW products. Now I'm done. I just can't see the value in collecting GW anymore.

Spend nothing for quite some time.
I never gave GW my money. The only reason I'm writing here is that I eye they site everyday, trying to find a way to start Warhammer. Yet, I cannot bring myself to buy anything. My High Elf Army and awesome battles of thousands of figures will remain on the dreamlands, as I own nothing from them, and the price to start an army this days are simply absurd.
In the meantime, I bought my first ever wargaming miniatures: Went on the MM site and bought:
Cygnar Battlebox
Retribution of Scyrah Battle Box
Retribution Ghost Sniper
Retribution Mage Assassin
Cygnar Black 13th
Custom tokens for the two factions
Custom dice for the two factions
Iguana Squad for Infinity
Jotun for Infinity
Knight Santiago for Inifinity
Next month I will get me Operation Icestorm and maybe something else Grand total I did not gave to GW:
