I'm... not feeling it. While I wanted Warhammer Quest back, I see now what I enjoyed about it was the more 'generic fantasy' feel it had going rather than because it had anything to do with Warhammer. It was basically an RPG lite hack and slash with a few trappings of Warhammer in some of the more unique monsters and heroes.
This is straight up Age of Sigmar as an RPG lite. I really disliked the aesthetic of the models in AoS. So I guess all my years waiting for Warhammer Quests return were in reality waiting for Guillotine Games to make Massive Darkness?

As a lover of the AoS look, but a hater of the actual game I'm looking very much forward to this iteration.
I just really hope future support is in the works.
But don't we have rumors of an expansion to at least Betrayal at Calth from Panda or Atia?

So you've played Silver Tower already? I know some companies do advance copies---even GW has been doing that with sites like Dice Tower.
Same with Massive Darkness.
It'd be cool to read a review (you mentioned it as AoS as an RPG lite) and see how the mechanics work.
Even cooler if you would be willing to compare mechanics of both games once you've played them (sounds like you have played them both?).
Thanks.

Sounds to me more like he doesn't care for the aesthetic. I'm not a huge fan either. The heroes are very Age of Sigmar-y. Honestly, I kinda like the Warrior Priest and the Chaos dude, and the Stormcast is...pretty good as Stormcast go, Stormcast on their own aren't too bad (an army of them loses some of the 'heroic appeal'), but the other three seem a little...I dunno. Busy, might be the term I'm looking for.
Honestly do like the Chaos guys a lot, though. Some of them look like they're drawing on old-school Realm of Chaos craziness as much as Age of Sigmar craziness (to my mind, a vastly superior form of craziness!). Those Chaos Familiar dudes are fantastic. Look at that little guy with the moon head. How cool is that guy? He's going all Poor Yorick on some Stormcast's helmet

Looking at all those swirly, magicky detail I can't help but imagine it going into plastic Ushtabi, Tomb Kings skeletons or chariots, Bretonnian knights. Or Empire, it just begs for excessive detail to recreate all that classic art in model form. But hey at least we have birds circling some big ass centerpiece sigmarine, pun intended.
As for the game, I'll either spend it's equivalent and some on just Tzaangors or buy the box and replace the heroes with whfb models.
Then I'll probably buy more Tzaangors. Hope they rank well.

That's the only good thing I can say about this. Other than that - same old, same old. I've fallen out with my love for the 80s aesthetic some time ago and it's quite apparent GW is never going to get with the times, content to regurgitate the same stuff over and over for the eroding fan base.
This game has little appeal to anybody who hasn't grown up playing Warhams or is nostalgic for the 80s and enjoys modeling; the ludicrous price tag certainly doesn't help. It's going to follow DW and BaC quite closely - a means for existing players to get a cheaper bundle of models and a failure to expand the player base.

There is no Betrayal at Calth expansion (not counting White Dwarf material and possibly something digital).
There is a separate HH-based game, but it was written before Calth hit the shelves. It is no more an expansion to Calth than Overkill is an expansion to Execution Force. It simply shares the same setting/time period.

Which board game with 50 HIPS models is cheaper? But yes, it's an obvious play to nostalgia, it's Warhammer Quest after all. Although I do find it a bit funny that you're calling it "80s" and "the same stuff" since the most common complaint I've heard from fans of the old game is that this looks way too "Newhammer" (derisive sneer required) and has nothing in common with the old asthetic. Caught between a rock and a hard place indeed.

Who cares what board game has 50 HIPS figures other than GW fans? This is exactly the way of thinking the company has trained its customers to follow. Bump up clampack prices to $30 to make the boxed sets look like a steal. This isn't a board game proper, it's an assortment of random figures for AoS with a simple board game thrown in so that they can claim they're in the board game market. Except it has no appeal to folks who are into board games. This is a set of buildable plastic figures for modelers, unless you're into that and have access to specialist tools, then you won't buy this.
AoS is very firmly rooted in the 80s, just as WFB was. It was quite a spacious aesthetic, and both universes fit into it quite snugly. From an outsider's perspective, it's very outdated.

As to it being "random figures with a simple board game thrown in" that has "no appeal" to board gamers... 1. We have no idea what the rules are 2. It's the follow-up to Warhammer Quest, a very popular board game among... yes, board gamers. 3. What about it is random? It's heavily themed. I guess if you consider the original WHQ to have "an assortment of random figures", then yes, this does as well.

I would be intrigued to know.
As I see it these games are a good price. This is going to be something like £95-100, which with a 25% FLGS discount comes in at around £75. I don't know what price you put on models but even at £1 each that makes the game £24. If you say each model is worth £2 the game is effectively free even from GW direct.
£1-2 a model is the sort of price you were getting 10 years ago and I struggle to see how it isn't a fair price today.

I've spent enough time on Board Game Geek to know that most board gamers consider models that require assembly to be a massive downside. They much prefer single-piece PVC.

Biggest beef with GW's new board game onslaught if they don't do expansions or sequels. I guess they didn't know if their rules would be well received OR the cynics are rifght and GW want the boxes to sell minis to regular customers for their armies instead of creating a possible set of xcustomers content with their boardgames. The horror of people not buying the latest tac squad!
Is there any whispering what the attitude towards the box sets inside GW really is? There are probably no plans for a Silver Tower expansion, right? /Stealth info begging

I'm not sure if there are other current games with HIPS (Shadow of Brimstone, is that still around?) and I can justify the price, but I'm still stuck in the regiment kits way of thinking that 20 plastic dudes should be 30€ or 1.50 a piece Posable vs. not-posable is tough, back in the day monopose was rather bad and I'd buy it only when cheaper, but starting with Blood Island and Space Hulk they can be really, rwally fantastic. This comes close with online prices and there are of course bigger dudes and tiles and rules included, however I can't really count stuff like familiars for modle total when such things used to be bits on the sprues (Bret dog, Gryphs in the tower kit, Gnoblar in the Ogre Bulls kit, etc). The fact that it is supposedly CHEAPER than DW:Overkill is a big, big plus and a nice surprise. When that was more expensive than SH and Calth I was afraid every new one would be more expensive, like they used with newly released armies.
Overall I feel 100ish(=2.XX per mini) is fair if you take the model count, the fact that there are duplicates for mooks but less than most PVC campaigns and the material. Style is a matter of taste, but the minis seem to be very high quality. I hope GW has success with boxes with a relatively good money/minis ratio and is encouraged to go back in that direction as a whole.
PS: GW is directly competing with KSs for my money with such games and won two out of three times so far. If only GW knew that they could've sold me a 50€ expansion right away, as KS ususlly does
PPS: Now they just have to poach Eric Lang. And, shooting for the moon, rebuild some bridges burnt in the past *cough* Chambers, Cavatore, Priestley, Diaz *cough* Imagine GW bringing them back as freelancers to each design a dream boardgame. Not Diaz, though, chain him to a deak and force him to sculpt Slaanesh till his fingers bleed!
