My latest commission is working with some Space Wolves sculpted by Scibor for a client in Switzerland.

Gotta say, these were confusing - there's some nice press-moulded surface detail, but a lot of the underlying assembly was godawful - just blobs of greenstuff insted of ribbed soft joins, greenstuff used as adhesive, no pins so parts fell off - lots of stuff to fix. So today I got to it, reattaching broken weapons, trimming down some poor proportion work on front arms - number 7 and 10 both had those long gloves attached pretty much at the wrist, so I had to trim down the forearms and re-pin the gloves so the arms were at least the same length on each side.

Tomorrow I'll be doing a little bit of green work to add the soft joints where necessary and cap the weapon staves, as well as fix up some minor details here and there. Notably the terminator legs are resin recasts from the looks of it - there's some pretty air bubbles on the toes on a few of the marines. I'll also use green to build up the ground to fit the feet a little better, but this will also be covered by the fuzzy GW snow that'll go on at the end.

The general concept is to have a pretty gritty but traditional SW grey, weathered up to be a bit rusty (so probably a brown basecoat) on arctic / snow bases.

This is gonna be awesome lol.

Winterdyne, one of these days I'm going to have to get you to paint me up a BA tac squad or something, just so I can own some of your work.

Yeah, it's a shame about your struggles at the start, but considering how the miniatures look on here and your own painting skills, I don't mind too much as I CANT WAIT FOR YOU TO PAINT THEM!

Seriously, your skills with those models, this should be, as Tom so aptly put it, awesome!

"As I recall, your face was tortured. Imagine that - the Master of the Wolves, his ferocity twisted into grief. And yet you still carried out your duty. You always did what was asked of you. So loyal. So tenacious. Truly you were the attack dog of the Emperor. You took no pleasure in what you did. I knew that then, and I know it now. But all things change, my brother. I'm not the same as I was, and you're... well, let us not mention where you are now."

I bow before the Greenstuff god that you are.

Awesome is an understatement to those models.

Fixes are done, and zenithal work is done. I'll be putting a few glazes over the top to unify it and add depth. Hair will be a mix of red, blonde, grey and black. Cloaks are going to be a dark burgundy red, as are some spot details. There'll also be the traditional black and yellow SW work.

Wow, exceptional sculpts there, and you've done a fine clean up job too. I really like the fact that the Norse side has been captured more, the new GW stuff is good but it focuses on the Lupine theme rather than the Nordic theme which kinda sucks.

Today's progress. After the zenithal work, I start blocking in rough colours - the cloaks are definitely going to be very dark, but I'm actually thinking of making them a muted green (almost Rohirrim style), rather than the originally planned red or black. The red you see here will get knocked back to a sort of boiled leather red (chestnutish) and will probably be finished with several alternating red and gloss layers to make it very rich. Pretty much everthing else will get tinted brownish, and there'll be a fair amount of weathering around the feet and legs - the client has specified an in-the-field-for-quite-some-time look.

I'm working on all ten at once, with an aim to finishing the squad this week (don't look likely at the mo!). The five not pictured still need the black doing, but then I'll be starting on the metals.

Brought one up to finished to see how things will go. I like. I've glossed the red leather panels, and the black wolfs head. Looks good. Should now crank out finished marines over the next couple of days. Still don't think I'll finish this week, more likely Monday next week.

They are beautiful and all, but I can help but think that they are all for some reason staring at their toes. Even adjusting for the angle of the pictures, they all seem to have a down cast look about them.

I hope it is just the angles of the pics, awesome GS work though, very impressive.

Tweaked the cloak (it looked naff - still some reflections due to my dodgy photography skills), and added more brown to the axe at client's request:

Winterdyne, how do you do those zenithal highlight? Is it just a soft airbrush spray with watered down white paint or is there more to is?

There's a tutorial (for Ultras Sternguard) on my blog that shows it step by step in lots of detail. Free to download, have a look - it should answer your questions.

Pretty much the same technique here, just different colours, starting with VMC black-grey with a touch of GW scorched brown just to tint it as the main starting colour (applied from all directions) then just adding more and more VMC ivory to the mix. This results in a nice warm grey, especially when coupled with devlan mud spot washes to shade.

Models look realy nice! Only let down is the color on the cloaks, they seem to be a bit uninspiring.
Maby painting it leather or a realy dark red will bring it out more?

I have a wolf guard termi in my gallery with some reds on it that might fit or a realy realy old thred where i did some wolvs.

Great to see Scibor's stuff in something other than that atrocious NMM gold!

Awesome stuff here... keep it up!

How do you get the details on the pads so flat and curved.... when i try greenstuff sculpting it never holds it shape like that!

Just to reiterate - I didn't do the sculpting - that's by a commission sculpter in Poland called Scibor.

I do know the trick though (press moulding)- first you cut the impression as a negative (get an engraver or brass etcher to make this). Lube it, and press your greenstuff onto it. The depth of the lines is dependent on the depth of the engraved design and how hard you press.

The grey fur:
Black undercoat
Charadon granite base (overbrush)
Drybrush codex grey
Drybrush bleached bone

I've stuck a wodge more flat base in my varnish mix and it's helped tone down the reflections (updated photo above). For some reason I seem to be going rather slowly at the moment, but they're coming out nice... probably something to do with the new puppy. Anyway, here's another pic:

These are epically awesome. I am trying to find tutorials on how to do that with the green stuff. So far I can't find anything in detail. I like the bases too. Any tips, and links on how to do this stuff would be highly appreciated!

Thanks

I was aprehensive after looking at the sculpts.. they were a little under the level I would consider Scibor to be at, especially given the points you mentioned.

But man do those paint jobs accent the models! Nice work, this post alone is a kickass tutorial on weathering and tones! I can't help but notice the snow looks a little like grass though, rather than legit snowfall.. what product was that?

Nice painting and the unit is looking really impressive. The sculpt as said leave something to be desired in parts, but your paint job is excellent. I especially like the weathering and the bases.
