So, my store might be holding a Journey Man paint and grow league. we are allowed to create a battle box, and im using mercs, specifically privateers. The only caster i own is Phinneus Shae, and to me his battle box seemed blazingly obvious, the 3 privateer Jacks, a Freebooter, a mariner and a buccaneer. that comes out to 11 points and is fluffy. To me is seems pretty good, but a person at the store said that that would be "cheap" and totally not in the idea of a battle box because it was too powerful. Do you guys think it is obnoxious to take those 3 jacks and Shae at BB level?

No. Because after week one, you're saddled with a three
warjack battlegroup with a caster who wants infantry.

Nope. As Malfred pointed out, Shae loves his infantry, so being tied to 3 Jacks doesn't really benefit him.

In addition, Pirate Jacks are dependent on their DEF to stay alive, they're not very durable.

Also, point out to them that it's actually not that different from the actual Pirate BB from the Journeyman PDF(which uses Bart with the same Jacks).

Yeah, i agree, i almost wish you could just play short. I would happily play with only a freebooter and buccaneer, and just accept being horrendously out pointed. that or beg the people to count the commodore cannon as a war jack XD (jut kidding, that would be going too far). The thing is, i have way more experience with the game then most of the people who will be playing, so it would almost seem fair, but i guess that does make my life easier as the games get bigger which would be unfair. Blech, Shae does NOT like the mariner,

How about the freebooter and two buccaneers? You have a heavy and two lights for the battlebox phase and still invest minimal points into jacks for later in the league.

Youre not allowed to play under points. Otherwise i would just take a freebooter and one buccaneer, and take some losses in the first round or go for caster assassinations, and then infantry up in the later ones. But no, that would only be 6 points. Maybe i will finally start up my Ashlyn army, 2 nomads and a vnaguard. That could work.

You can't even be one point under (is this a custom thing, or are we talking normal games?). I knew there was a limit of how far under you could be, but didn't think it had to be on the nose...

In Steamroller type events you are allowed to be under by 2 points or less.

yeah, you are allowed to be a little under, but 6 and 9 points are pushing it.

Hey, if you want to limit yourself, who cares

It would be fine if that also limits you for every next round, you just gain the same amount of max points the other guys get.

I thin i am going to end up picking up Ashlyn and starting an army for her, not that she runs jacks all that well either, but what ever. Its a Journeyman league, its meant for beginners.
