Hey all, been scouring these forums for a while and figured it would be a good place to document the build of my small Lamenters army project.

I have been out of the scene for about 10 years now, picking up a couple of models and some paints a few months ago and have been dabbling again on and off when I find some spare time.

"Back in the day" I had a small ultramarine force of space marines, that I have managed to scrounge about half of from my parents place, with the intention of stripping back, and re-purposing as Lamenters. I wanted to go something based on blood angels, but really wasn't feeling the red, and came across lamenters. It'll be a challenging scheme, with all the checkers, and the fact they're yellow....but I'm looking forward to the challenge. Not a big fan of the loveheart iconography, so going to incorporate the normal blood angels icons instead.

The other aim is to try and set the army up with a minimum outlay (trying to avoid the stupidly expensive GW prices here in AUS), so will be primarily cleaning up and reusing my old models, and buying parts etc off the net where needed.

Below is a list of where I'm at so far:

+ 10 Man Tactical Squad, with heavy Bolter and plasma gun (Combination of parts scrounged and stopped that I already had, and EBay bits to complete)
+ Furioso Dreadnought (the old metal one, stripped, posed better and replaced the stormbolter I removed in a bad conversion years ago)
+ Librarian and honour guard (old metal Tigurius model with changed chest logo, metal standard bearer, metal apothecary and two metal bodied marines (eBay) with combo weapons, from old bits and with a few eBay spares)....still need one more metal body marine to keep the squad looking consistant.
+ Blood angels commander, games day 2012 special (scored from eBay)
+ techmarine (scored from eBay)
+ landspeeder with multi melta (yet to be stripped)

For anyone that's interested, here's costs so far:
+ spare parts - $55 (it did surprise me how quickly it adds up!)
+ 2 x metal marines with spare bits $7
+ blood angels commander $18
+ techmarine $25

I know I still also have a land raider crusader, a scout squad and I'm pretty sure some more tactical marines buried somewhere so have to dig them out of cupboards still.

Will update with pics soon, and keep progress on everything updated aswell.

Cheers, Ash.

Why not just make a homebrew BA successor chapter? Pick your own colour scheme and use the BA iconography. Hope to see how the project develops!

Azazelex, I though about doing a whole new successor chapter, but overall I really like the lamenters name, scheme, story etc, just not the logo, and I really think the standard blood angels icons would work well with the rest of the theme. Using the logos makes it heaps easier to use themed bits aswell.

Here are some photos finally. Nothing super exciting yet, just a bunch of unpainted stuff (though I do quite like the modelling side of things).

Here's the furioso dread. Stripped (metal is somewhat stained, but all the paint is gone) and re posed. The standard dread pose is a bit boring, so made it look a but more menacing. Arms wider, with some additional pipes, purity seals etc, and a stormbolter that I think originated on a rhino to replace the one I cut off.

Next up, techmarine I got for 24 delivered off eBay. Always loved this model from the first time I saw it, and for that price, couldn't pass it up. This and the commander below were my first dealings with finecast.....yep....not fun! There was seriously about 3 hours worth of clean up on this model, and still more time to go in filling air bubbles. I now see why people botch about it so much.....

Really liked this model too seeing it around the net, but never thought I would find one. Spotted one on eBay, and picked it up for 18 delivered, score! Will probably keep him as a commander, not 100% sure on the final use yet, buy it's a cool model, and I'm glad I got it!

The tactical squad is nothing too special really, mix of older stripped parts, and other parts from eBay. Mixed up the poses a bit by picking up some kneeling legs, and used a sternguard heavy Bolger instead of the super bulky normal one. Sergeants legs will look a bit better once they're mounted on a base correctly.

Then there's the librarian and honour guard. Going to switch out the lighting claw on the standard bearer for a storm bolter I found, and still need to find another metal marine to complete the squad.

The landspeeder still needs to be disassembled and stripped. This one is going to need a bit of green stuff work to fix the dodgy carved out battle damage, but should be doable. I'm going to pick up some typhoon missile launchers to go with it.

Also made a start on the bases. 2mm thick cork sheet, ripped into random chunks, and notches cut to make it look more like smasked up concrete slabs. Bit of sand to fill in the gaps, and just need a nice thin coat of pva all over to seal everything down.

Fair enough on the Lamenters stuff. They can always be a distinct task force, crusading company, etc if you need to explain it, fluffwise.

I love what you've done with the Furioso. Can we get some more angles on it? Also happy to see some old-school 2nd Edition metals mixed in with the newer stuff. Just an arm upgrade and you can hardly tell the difference. Also, congrats on the scores on those two models. You got both for a good price, despite the Finecast handicap that they have. Sadly that techmarine is probably better in finecast than metal, being so incredibly multipart. I never managed to assemble my metal ones. One day...

Cheers mate, here are some more angles. Also, I always thought the dreads weren't tall enough, so added some small washers in between the feet and legs (speed ring from a skateboard), and also a double layer riser (cut up base) between the legs and torso. I didn't want to go too far and make it look awkward, but the roughly 4mm height increase does make it more imposing in comparison to a standard marine. Will do some work to the base to make it fit with the theme of the rest.

Just as you said, I was hoping to bring new life to the old metals by replacing arms / weapons / backpacks with the newer style and bring everything together. The new style helmets are noticeable more 'chiseled' than the old metal ones, but by keeping the different types separated into their own squads it should all work together well...hopefully...

Nice work there. I've only just finished a metal dread of a similar vintage after a good ...17 years? half painted. Need to get some pics of it up soon. I also added a touch of modern plastic bling to it.

I think the old hybrid metals would work just fine mixed in squads with the modern figures as well - remember that marine armour is composed of many different marks, and the variation even within a single pattern is pretty much endless...

Have started on a test model to get my scheme and colours dialed in. I don't want the yellow to be too bright and cartoony, and so far I'm liking how it is coming out. It needs another round or two of highlighting, then will work on adding some chips and scratches. Yellow is a bit tricky, and my basecoating and undercoating let me down somewhat giving it a slightly rough texture, but I think I have it Sussed now for the next one.

That's definitely not the traditional bright yellow - I always had a bit of a personal thing about it, too - bloody Imperial Fists!

You've got more of a Desert Yellow thing going on, almost. Not quite as brownish as traditional Desert Yellow/Dunkelgelb, but the kind of colour you could see in some arid landscapes. Have you thought about how you'll do the bases? A desert sand kind of look would really hit home a connection between the shade you've chosen and the environment.

Haven't made any update here in a while (though, haven't done a whole lot more either...)

Got the tactical squad, command squad and dread primed and base coated yellow, and have done a couple of test models which didn't quite go how I wanted. The apothecary though, has finally hit the armour colour I want, without taking too much effort. I would call it maybe a mustard yellow? It still stands out enough as a yellow, but without being mega bright.

for
I have also managed to find my old land raider, which seems to all be there minus one of the side doors. Need to track down some blood angels doors from somewhere. I have some parts stripping at the moment, but the main body paint is in good order, so with a few little touchups, filling and sanding, I will be able to prime white again straight over the top.

Managed to pick up a few new models as well, all for decent prices I believe. 7 man scout squad (older metal models, which I like way better than the new ones) for $14 delivered, a random assortment of complete tactical marines, metal chaplain and two metal bike rider top halves for $14 which I am still waiting to turn up, and the marine half of the AOBR set minus the dread for $29 delivered. I have cleaned up, and re-posed the terminators to look a bit more dynamic, as their standard poses were a bit boring. clean up took forever, the plastic wasn't the nicest to work with (new stuff seems way better).

Hoping to have the apothecary finished by the end of the week to have a complete model to set the tone for the rest of them.

I have an update.....amazing! Havent had much time at all to paint, been spending too much time riding skateboards. The last few weeks though have been stupidly hot here, so after an early morning skate, the rest of the day on the weekends have been free, so I have been playing around with some stuff.

After testing quite a few different combos for the yellow, and for what level of weathering I want to use, I have finally come up with the final yellow. Here is a WIP shot of one of the scouts. It is a bit brighter than it appears in this photo, but I will take some proper photos once it's finished that will show it off properly.

Doesnt need to much more work, just the head and chapter markings on the shoulder pads and some weathering powders.

Not skating anymore as I have a snowboarding trip coming up next week, so hoping to get this guy, and two others that are at the same sort of stage finished before I go.

Beautiful yellow.

I love Lamentors, great choice.

The scout is looking darned good, nice work on the checks. I can only do orky checks. What is your process for the Tactical arrow? I have a bear of a time getting mine to look decent.

Cheers mate. What I have found to be the biggest trick for any sort of freehand is to sketch it out in pencil first. I use a sure sharp 2B pencil (soft is best to avoid damage your basecoat). I very lightly draw a line down the centre of the pad, top to bottom. Then a line across the pad, halfway, from side to side (this is the base of the arrow tip. I then evenly either side of the vertical line, draw lines to give width of the arrow base, up to the horizontal line. Make a mark the same width as the arrow 'stalk' eeither side of it, on the horizontal line then make a mark on the vertical line, just down from the top of the top of the pad. Join the three marks up and there is your arrow. I then very carefully outline with a fine brush, with a well thinned black, then once the paint is dry, with an eraser, softly erase any pencil you can still see.

Hope that helps!

Mate! That's a beautiful yellow that you're pulling off. I'm really excited to see where the blog goes, the scout has me already begging for more!

Perfect thanks! I have a micron pen for lettering, and use it to draw out my orks' checks, but never could get it to work for space marine insignias. The pencil sounds perfect.

Here's a little crappy camera phone pic teaser for today. Tomorrow I will get the sword finished, then the heads and a final tidy and three will be finished!

smooth paint job mate! I'm inclined to ask how you did all the bending (the sword and armour in particular) but if it's too much of a hassle to explain I understand that

alrighty....finally finished! (well as much as anything is every finished).

Picked up some MIG weathering powders to try out, along with their pigment fixer. Took a bit of trial and error to figure out just how much powder I need with the fixer to get the effect I wanted, but now have it pretty much sorted. The fixer seems to hold it in place really well, I'm quite impressed. who knows if I will every actually play any games, but I believe its solid enough now to deal with it.

There might be a few fix-ups here and there as I get the rest of the squad finished, but for the sake of the conversation, i'm calling them done!

My aim is to get the entire army done with this level of paintwork, so I don't expect to get it done very quickly, but a full, well painted coherent army looks pretty mint!

Anyway, keen for any comments! likes, dislikes, ideas, let me know!
