Androgynous Daemon Prince of Slaanesh
|
So, I'm sure we all have that model that we can't play a game without. It's in every list for its specific army/faction/etc. So, Dakka, what is your "must have" model or unit?
For me, if I'm playing Deadzone I need a sniper. Prefer the Enforcer one, but I can use the rebel or Gobbo sniper too. I suspect Widowmakers will be in every non-themed Khador list I run. And for 40k (in 5th) there was always a Slaanesh Demon prince. No matter what else was present, that model was always a requirement. So what do you have to take in every game of your chosen army? I put this in general because we have a LOT of systems that can be represented-I didn't any this to be a 40k-only-club.

I have a 3rd edition metal space marine sergeant w/ power axe that gets included wysiwyg everytime I play space marines, always leading the 1st tactical squad. Always seems to die in challenges though.

Thunderfire cannon.
I spent ages putting the bastard together and painting it, its awesome, and its only 100 points.
I think I have took it to every game I have played since I got here, and I think it has paid for itself 9 times out of 10.
Sometimes the dice are super nasty and it scatters crazy and misses completely or lands on my own guys, but its all part of the fun.
Even resolving the hits with that crazy, "place a template once and then scatter all over the place four times" thing is fun, so its just great all around, I take it every match I have.

Enforcers (Deadzone): I wouldn't dream of leaving home without the Sniper. He's just too good, and the model is great.
Rebs (DZ): Terraton, because giant death turtle-dinosauar with grenades and flame-throwers.
I can't see myself playing Malifaux without Death Marshals.

My 1st tactical squad of RTB01 beakies, with the classic ML/F and tiny little rhino find their way into most of my lists. But I make an effort to shelf stuff that sees too much table time so other units can hit the field. In 5th, I had to drag my sternguard and librarian off the battlefield. They were enjoying the spotlight just a little to much.

Chaos Space Marines: Chaos Contemptor Dreadnought - Love this guy to pieces, one of my fav models out of my range and he has done so much on his own I could never leave him out of my lists unless a tourney restricted me to do so..
Orks: Mega Dredd: does less than the Contemptor but by Gork he's great to have on the battlefield

Iron Mother from convergence of Cyriss. That was the model that made me choose that faction and possibly my favorite from any game range.
2nd place goes to the Zondcat for my Infinity Nomads army. You got all these serious bad A's in cool armor and guns...and they you have a robot cat girl. Love it!

My Malifaux crews always have at least 1 Death Marshal, they're so useful!
I always try to play with a Peacekeeper in my games, but it never makes the cut.

Every single one of my Vlad lists (doesn't matter which version) has to include Drago. If you play WMH you know why. Helps the model is kickass too. Conversely, no matter how useful they may be I will never take Typhon in a pThagrosh list or Nightmare in a pDenny list. It causes a short circuit in my need to adhere to the fluff.
My gators simply have to include the two Wrastlers Croc Lesnar and GM Punk, even though duplicating warbeasts is a little redundant for animi purposes.

In 40K it's Guardsman Marbo. He's been in every list I've used since I got him, because he was pretty handy for 45pts. I haven't gone to the AM book yet.
Malifaux: Raphael LaCroix, he always seems to die pretty quickly but he always seems to be a good idea.
X-Wing: I usually field Horton Salm in a Y-Wing, because he can re-roll blank attack dice at range 2-3.
FoW: I usually try and field some LMGs (US Paras) even though I don't think they've proved useful at all yet.

When I was playing 40k, it was my Commisar. Not because of in-game stats, but more some kind of sentimentality. It was a Yarrick figure that came in a random lot of figs with a messed up left arm and missing part of his claw. He got a power fist and a new arm as well as a new head with gas mask.
Sorry about the bad pic, I promise it looks better in person.
I put him in the list whenever I could. Sometimes running him as an officer.

I have an old mk2 armour Space Marine that has been fully repainted 3 times - as a Salamander in 2nd/3rd edition (back when they were Dark Angels green! ), then as a Night Lord with power fist in 4th edition, finally as a pre-heresy World Eater in 5th edition.
Only pic I could find of him.. regardless of how the casualty removal rules changed over the years, and how his paint scheme changed, the little guy always seemed to be one of the last of his squad to survive..
For X-Wing, 'The Flying Rancor', a YT-1300 smugglers vessel. Rarely play a game as the Rebs without it, having such a cheap but tough unit and just flying it straight at the enemy, a lot of people don't seem to know how to handle it!
And this beauty of a miniature for my Haqqislam force for Infinity. Helps that the miniature's rules are so kick-ass, she has claimed a fair few scalps over the past few years!

Not only is he a pretty badass hacker and awesome leiutenant choice, the model itself is fething awesome. He's the reason I haven't seriously branched out into the Qapu Khalki sectorial - I can't use him! But he's got a cool alternative there, the Al Hawwa hacker. I just don't have it yet.

In all my grey knight armies there has been one link. My converted ordo malleus inquisitor from the female dark elf dreadlord with two hand weapons, so i could use it as a daemonblade. She has a name and a HUGE backstory to her, so much so that for my space-wolves she will be allied with them for future fun, just because i can. Also, daemonblades are fun, could be full anti daemon, or impossible to kill.

Who needs Grey Knights when you've got Deathwing Terminators!

I know that they're not uber-compeditive, I know they'll likely get eaten by bolter fire before they ever get into assault -- but that one-in-five time they assault terminators and eat them wholesale is enough joy for me that they're always in my list with my archon.
