I think that I am going to start a scummy eldar list project after I am finished with the current [ork] army builder league has ended.

I need to know what works. I need to know what does not.

Any help is appreciated as all I have is access to a codex and that is all.

There are VERY few eldar players here and NONE of them use wraithknights etc. Playtesting is not a thing I dont think.

That or I need a very good reason to run something else. Riptides look cool but I tried tau once before the codex release and it left a bad taste in my mouth.

Daemon ; Conjuration Engine is also something that has merit in my mind.

I clearly also play marines, so IG w/ Allied Marines can be a thing, but I'd rather not considering model count (Currently Doing Orks) and I have done Space Marines for the past 2 Army Builders (Ultra / Salamanders)

Is it worth taking something like The Avatar of Khaine?

He seems stupidly high statted for >200 pts.

Or is it just worth taking a more basic HQ choice?

1000 HQ choices. Haha

Honestly the number of options in this book are insane.

My two favorite builds for Eldar is the Eldar Air Force (because basically no one does it) and I really love the Warp Spider Footdar list (which I have played since 5th Edition, to be fair). No other builds give me the same amount of fun.

Neither list uses a Wave serpent. So for what its worth I think Warp Spiders are a highl;y reliable purchase no matter the list.

Don't buy any Wave Serpents. They are overcosted for what they do. Easy to take down as Chimeras. No one takes Chimeras nowadays so make your own calculations.

While I agree that Wraithlords are underused for what they deliver... they may have very good stats for their points but they are missing the speed of the Wraithknight. No 12" jumping means they get avoided easily by cc units. So in most games WLs end up using only shooting their shoulder weapons and eating shots and for that you have cheaper weapon platforms. If you run an army concept that mitigates the WLs' slow speed they are a great choice. Otherwise good players just outplay them.

Wave Serpents are really good. They are extremely versatile and with their speed you can get to the side/back armors of enemy vehicles often in turn 1 and wreck them with the serpent shield.

My standard Eldar list is:

2 Wave Serpents w/ 20 Dire Avengers and 2 Farseers.

Then sprinkle in the following to taste, depending on whatever you feel like and what points you're playing at.

3 Warwalkers w/ Scatter Lasers
Crimson Hunter
Jetbike squad
Guardians or Rangers to camp on objectives
Wraithlord (my favorite use is with dual bright lances)
Fire Prism
Night Spinner
Striking Scorpions
Vipers
Swooping Hawks
Warp Spiders

This is basically all the Eldar I own, and I get to play with all of them at least occasionally, and honestly they all do really well if used appropriately. I haven't even gotten to try out Dark Reapers or a Vaul's Wrath Battery yet. With Orks it'll probably be awhile before I buy more Eldar models.

We understand, you don't like eldar and want to give bad advice under the guise of being funny... unfortunately it isn't funny and so now we have a thread where a person who does not know much about eldar will come and not be able to find good advice.

Eldar are top of the mountain, some people cant handle it.

Wave serpents are by far the best transport in the game, take as many as you can fit, 3-6. scatter lasers and dire avengers.

Windrider jetbikes are the best troops in the game for taking objectives and just being douches. Take a few squads of 3 for sure.

Jetseer council is an amazing anvil

Warp spiders bring the pain and never get shot if you play well.

Walkers and knights are ok, I prefer fire prisms. I also dont own either of the former.

Things to avoid:

Wraithlords, skorpions, wraithblades, basically anything that isnt a farseer HQ or autarch for some lists, banshees, harlequins are meh usable but not good, vipers (hornets are far better), and guardians unless going footdar

For realz advice

Wave serpents are amazing

Jet bike squads will win more games than you can possibly imagine.

Wraithknights murder everything that does not have instant death weapons.

Fire dragons in a wave serpent are one of the best combos you can buy in any codex

Striking scorpions are great as is exarch with a sporpion claw (i5 power fist)

War walkers with a bright lance and scatter laser ruin land raiders and high av.

Best anti air you have is the wave serpent with SL ac and shooting shield.

Warp spirders are crazy fast and good.

Rangers in ruins can hold objective pretty well but usually jet bikes do it better unless you have them as pathfinders

Fire prisms are also awesome

Always put holos fields on your grab tanks

There are a lot of good tactic as out there but this is some basics

Accept that you have units that are the beat at what they do for eldar but mostly bad at anything Else

I agree with all that except guardians. It's still a toss-up whether 5 man Dire Avengers in a Wave Serpent is better/worse than 10 man Guardian Defenders in Wave Serpent but I think both are fine. Though I could be biased because I pay Ulthwe and they traditionally have lots of Guardians. On one hand 5 Dire Avengers are cheaper and have 18" range while the Guardians give you twice as many shots at 12" range and twice as many bodies.

Sorry Awfeel I just couldn't resist.

Still there are hardly many units with which you can go wrong. If you want the "Scumiest" list possible just look at some tournament winning Eldar lists.

2 Wave Serpents w/ 20 Dire Avengers and 2 Farseers.

Wow that brings back some memories when I've started playing Eldar in 5th ed. Over 60 TL BS4 S4 with rerolls to wound shots.

If you are going to start a new Eldar army, I would buy the following as the core of the force:

1 Farseer

The Jetbike box (comes with 3)

Box of Dire Avengers

Wave Serpent (build it with the Scatter Laser and Cannon)

That is almost 400 points with upgrades, gives you 1 HQ and two troops for a legal CAD, and then you can sprinkle to taste with other good stuff. I like Fire Dragons in a Wave Serpent, which will bring you up to around 500, but Spiders or War Walkers are also good choices.
