Howdie folks. I just got an offer for buying a necron army. For about $250 I get to buy the following (mostly unpainted):

- 51 Warriors
- 16 Scarab Swarms (3 from Forge World)
- 14 Destroyers
- 5 Deathmarks
- 10 Immportals
- Monolith
- 3x Destroyer Lords
- Necron Lord

I know it's a bargain but I'm wondering if it is possible to make it playable. I don't want to buy something that's just going to sit on my shelf (as tempting as it may be). I've seen most lists consist of Barges and generally vehicles with very little infantry. What's your take on this, fellow experienced players?

I'd buy it then figure out how to do something with it once I had it.
14 Destroyers at 20$ per 1 means that in Detroyers alone you've got 280$.

Raw value aside, the key bits seem to be missing since there are no flyers nor wraiths in the deal. But! with the new codex that is assumed to come out here relatively soon you'd probably still be ok since the lists are going to radically change.

Thanks for the advise Azre, I guess buying it should be a no-brainer if I have spare cash. Thanks a bunch!

Well, you'll need several Ghost Arks or Night Scythes for making a Necron army competitive.
Destroyer were good in the previous incarnation of the codex, but now they are not.

I'd consider the battle box. Its a great value too. You could also start from there.

Pfft.

You can make some perfectly good armies without buying anything else other than that lot. That said, I'd suggest it would be worthwhile to get a battleforce to kitbash some court lords and crypteks.

There is easily $700 or $800 of gear there. Even if its not the best in the Codex, I heartily recommend you take the offer. You could paint the stuff that you don't want to field as practise, displays, dioramas, or just spare models to field, or sell them off yourself and you make pretty much guarenteed profit.

That's a good deal. I don't know much about any other army outside Orks, but I know 40k prices. And that my friend, is a good deal

It IS a great deal.
Only downside is that will be stuck with 14 Destroyers that make up most of that offer and you don't want to field them, at least not all of them!

Would be pretty nasty against Marines, I guess?

Heh. Would murderise a Horus Heresy army.

The list will obviously have speed and reach as an asset. I think it is definitelyt a good core

EBay the destroyers and you'll make half your money back just from that. Although there is a chance the next codex will make them good.

What's wrong with using "counts as"?

Have no use for the mini, "counts as" something else for now.
