Ongoing blog for my conversion work. Everything in this blog is for sale, if anyone is interested in a model (esp unpainted) PM me and we can work something out.

In terms of the overall aesthetic a cohesive look that is, streamlined, organic, and demonic is the goal. Trying to go for more Chtulu than Khorne, lol. So far a combination of Tyranid, Chaos, and Space Marine parts have suited me nicely. I occasionally use custom order resin bits, and enjoy building conversions using parts sourced from a wide variety of manufacturers. My overall goal is to better my own skills as both a converter and a painter.

The base paint scheme for the army is based on a simple layered gunmetal and glazed Nurgle-esque green. I chose these colors because I can duplicate the results consistently and it provides excellent contrast at a distance of 36 inches.

Assembly for a couple of large infantry scale models. They're a little disheveled right now, but its going to come together nicely once the final greenstuff touches are done & they get primed.

Included are some pics of the special order parts. The scorpion will be getting the armor plated Mecha Egyptian head (as opposed to the Possessed spider head in the first photo), the giant techno-ganic monstrosity will get a Spellcrow Chaos head, not sure which one.

Raptor pack leader is ready for primer! The head with sweeping horns rattling around for a few years, adding the tail really sets the model where I wanted it to be.

Possessed Spider Terminator was mostly just me wanting to see how much easier things are with a pin vise (answer: LOTS). The scale between possessed and terminator parts is every so slightly off, but I think I can bulk things out with greenstuff on the joins. Fun model either way, should look awesome once its painted.

Possessed Terminators shown with painted models. The left arm for the flying dude was an old project trying to build a knock off Talon of Horus which didn't quite work out. The end result is still a pretty cool arm that required some serious fiddly work, and I think it will look rad as a power weapon. I had to remove a small amount of the rear termie hull to make the wingpack fit, but it should look pretty dope painted up.

Gotta say, after years of working without a pin vise I'm wondering why I was so intimidated. Similarly to the use of Green Stuff, it makes converting FAR easier as opposed to being some kind of archaic tool with a huge learning curve.

Very neat stuff, I've always felt the subtle tug of chaos, and it's probably the only way I'd end up playing marines at this point.

I've never played 40k, so I dunno how good they are as an army....but I feel like there is a lot of freedom offered in terms of the direction you can take conversions. Thats what originally drew me to the models.

I get to play so little that I may as well not consider myself to do so But I've still got this nagging twitch that makes me want to have my painting projects belong to games and be at least quasi-viable for play, even if I hardly ever do.

I may....

*holy crap*

My computer had a power outage and it saved my text, way to go firefox

//*holy crap*

I may have to take some of my marines and do zombie/mutant/technozombie conversions without necessarily devoting them to chaos or even 40k. Something for fun.

Techno-zombie huh? How about a posessed chaos space marine techno-zombie!

Got the special order parts today. They screwed up the Buzzsaws & Drills arm blister and sent me a bunch of lame ass orc arms....but I couldn't resist whipping up a gnarly undead sci fi evil thing real fast. Will update later with heads added to the Terminator Lord and Scorpion King.

Huh those are pretty gnarly.

I'm thinking of sending my Sedition Wars strain and some of my deadzone plague to the chopshop and adding in some space marine parts. Zombie marines, mutant marines, technozombie marines. First gen with some added parts as mutated demon prince or something. Not sure I'll worry too much though.

I've had this idea of the NEMESIS, an alien entity that tends to control all things zombie/etc that has co-opted the strain, and the plague, and maybe some other zombies and mutants. Kind of just use all of my gribbly stuff like that in one big cooperative horde

Yeah, the Sedition Wars stuff is really cool esp at the $30 price point the first edition game is selling for right now. 50 mini's for that price is a steal.

I want to start on some conversions with them, but I'm trying like hell to actually finish to primer the batch I've got going right now. lol

Update shots.

The scorpion is 100% ready for primer now that his head is on & robes are GS'd! Honestly, I think he turned out a little "meh"...last conversion I'll be doing without a pin vise. Damn...could have been so much more epic. :(

The Techno-Zombie Monstrosity is just about finished. I bulked out the Necron Destroyer torso with GS and added some veiny parts, mated a Spellcrow Chaos Knight head to the spine, and he's damn near ready for primer as well. The arms and body will be painted separately for obvious reasons. Frankly, I'm excited to see how this guy looks painted up as he's the most in depth conversion I've done so far. Having second thoughts on the head choice, but its too late now.

The winged terminator turned out awesome! He's also the least complicated conversion of the three, though the power blade arm was EXTREMELY fiddly to construct.

Lastly, a few close up shots of the special order parts to give a feel for their quality. Spellcrow sent a rad plastic sack to hold stuff...plus "made in Poland" is always nice to read on stuff!

Overview of the project & my space efficient hobby area. Model total currently sits at 32 with 4 terminators, 5 raptors, Techno-zombie lord & 2 retainers, Scorpion and 2 retainers (might use the Anubis-marine heads with custom power weapons), 6 she-demons, 10 chaos marines, and 1 dreadnought scale monstrosity. I might be able to get model total up to 50 with the parts I currently have knocking around in bins and storage. We'll see.

I received my order of assorted plasticard sheets & tubes, might attempt to build a tank. I dunno...might be too ambitious for my skill level. There's always the option of practicing some basic structure modeling. <shrug> Also have an entire bag of Sedition Wars mini's that I plan to convert into...something nasty.

The larger model at the front of the table is a project from years back....too much cannabis and an attempt to kitbash a Carnifex and an Ironclad Dreadnought. Should fit nicely with the aesthetic of the army. I was considering using the Demon Prince for something, but just going to jack the base I had him on. His silhouette is too "traditional Chaos" to go with the aesthetic I'm shooting for...at least for now. Who knows, I might just get crazy on him. >

At this point I'm kinda wondering if I should ask a mod to move this into P&M blogs.

Lol yeah ya'll will get to see some paint get slapped onto stuff. I'll be doing batch painting, so I want to get everything modeled, cured, and primed beforehand.

Thanks for the kind words.

Here are a few detail shots of the big zombie dude. I think it turned out OK for my first attempt at GS detailing. Dipping the end of each hand rolled vein into superglue before placing them on the model resulted in a few expletives stated emphatically, lol. The arms are not glued at this point, so the posture is not as crisp and upright as the end result. I'm going back & forth on whether or not to paint them before assembling. I feel like I could get better detail if I did that, but I am not sure how I'd smooth out the shoulder to torso joins post-painting. All things considered, I think this is going to be fairly impressive once he and his cyborg-zombie retainers are finished.

Bonus ultra custom points, had to drill and wallow out the pipe on the base...because casting a pipe thats a solid cylinder makes sense to some companies? Hell, maybe I'll ad something evil puking out of the end since its a little boring as is... Sneaky placement of the model's feet on the base adds the perception of additional height ever so slightly.

Thanks ya'll. Had a mod move it.

Primed and ready to paint! Managed to drop the box and break a couple of models bringing it inside, but nothing a bit of superglue couldn't fix. I cut this batch down to 16 models (1 Cyber-zombie lord & 2 retainers, Scorpion Lord & two Corrupted Terminators, 10 Corrupted Marines) in order to keep it managable. I want to finish up this step so I can get back to building stuff.

Paint scheme is as follows, listed in order of application.

Organics: Reaper Olive base, Reaper Pale Olive layer, Citadel green wash, Citadel Rotting Flesh highlights, Citadel green wash, Citadel Technical Nurgle's Rot
Mechanics: Citadel Leadbelcher base, Citadel Ironbreaker layer, Citadel black wash, Citadel Ironbreaker highlight
Bone: Citadel Screaming skull , Citadel brown wash, Citadel Bleached Bone (old dry paint for drybrushing) highlight
Misc: Citadel Technical Blood for the Blood God, Citadel Technical Ryza Rust, Citadel Technical Nihilakh Oxide, Gunmetal (1:1 ratio mix blue & black washes) wash, Citadel Chaos Black, Citadel Dwarf Bronze

Its not going to be a show quality or professional grade paintjob, but it suits the aesthetics of the army and I can consistently duplicate my results.

Well, the first stage of painting is done. Frankly....I don't enjoy this part nearly as much as the modeling. I'd vastly prefer to do one or two complicated conversions than paint a whole batch of mini's, but whatever. The camera refused to focus on anything, despite being dog cussed. IDK, technology...

I included some shots of parts recently purchased for upcoming conversions. The medium grey plastic bits are all from the Sedition Wars boxes set....damned if some isn't almost exactly the right scale as Terminator hull/arms, and Marine scale legs. The box also came with a literal giant bag full of necrotic cyborg space zombies, so I may make some terrain incorporating that stuff. The buzzsaws & drills are from Kromlech. While they are "officially" Orc parts, I think they'll do fine on marine torsos. The sprues are from the new (to me anyway) Chaos Raptor kit, which blew my mind when I looked closely at the detailing. Also got the assortment of plasticard and tubing (no photo cause boring), so once this painting is wrapped up I get to have fun again.

One of the frustrating things about this project is that ALL of the mini's currently being painted were kitbashed out of things that I poorly assembled and half painted years ago. While I did repair some of the most god awful mutilations during the recent conversion process, painting has really made me hyper aware of the places where joins are bad, lazy, etc. Meh, learning process I suppose.

Made in us
Mutated Chosen Chaos Marine

NorCal

Those parts are part of the "good" bag in the Sedition Wars box. They're better detailed & higher quality plastic than the VAST majority of the stuff. All the previously photo'd parts are from "The Grendlr." Fun fact is that the casting on the back was so warped that I am not even sure how I'd put the model together as intended, if I had any intention of doing that in the first place. Fortunately I do not! For my purposes the parts are wonderful. I was particularly excited that the smaller rear legs match up almost perfectly with Marine scale legs. I think that offers a real opportunity for a dynamic pose conversion, particularly with a pair of the ridiculous chainswords that came in the Raptor kit. The human figures in the box are proportionally correct for direct use in an Imperial Guard army, or could easily be turned into Chaos Cultists.

I'm thinking I might be able to make a pretty impressive Terminator Lord. The body portion of "The Cthonian" (also in the "good" bag) is proportioned correctly to use as a rear/lower hull with minor reworking. Maybe a head from the new Raptor kit? I'm also considering another "centaur" style conversion (like the Scorpion) using the model pictured as a foundation for the lower body...but I'd probably be inclined to use a base that actually FIT the model, lol! Either way, having a pin vise is going to make for much better models than my previous conversions.

If I'd paid the $100 initial asking price for the game on release I'd probably be furious with the miscast models. But I didn't, I bought it as a $30 bits bin. Neat how intent and perspective changes stuff like that...

Now I get to spend the day painting. :/

Roughly halfway through layering the organic portions. Batch painting is tedious, but at this point the silhouette and overall aesthetic of the project is starting to become visible.

I am intensely glad I decided to cut out a significant number of mini's from this batch. In the future I doubt I'll do more than 5 figures at once. ADD is a real mofo.

No, haven't really thought much about basing them yet. Might just leave it flat black if I decide to sell them, IDK.

Second stage paint is done. At this point its just a matter of detailing and washing. It is slightly more vibrant than I intended, but I don't think it will clash with previously painted minis. If anything, the vibrancy is a net positive. I'm looking forward to finishing up this batch soon so that I can get to work on my next conversions. Good learning experience though, for sure.

Enjoy the pics! I started off with a shot of what the paint looked like prior to glazing with Nurgle's Rot. I REALLY hope Citadel makes other colors using the same pigment formula, this stuff is fantastic. (Might do a single model in red to see if I can get a similar effect from Blood For The Blood God red glaze). Apologies for the harsh lighting, I'm still trying to dope out the best procedure for photoing my work.

Full shot of batch 1. Found a new setting on my phone camera, seems to work a bit better esp if you click and zoom in. This is a particularly good shot to gauge my conversion wingpacks against the GW Possessed wingpacks. TBH I always found the GW ones very "chunky" for Marine scale models, even the slightly larger modern ones. I used the wings from a Tyranid Gargoyle boxed set to build my own, though only one out of the batch has as dynamic a pose as I was hoping to achieve.

Worlds. Slowest. Painter.

Hoping to finish the bone sections tonight, maybe the detailing as well.

I dunno, at least you *are* painting. A lot of people just talk about it being a thing that has been known to happen while they mercilessly construct an ever growing horde of minis Well sometimes they get sprayed black and left, that's almost worse.

Hell, the stage you're at now is better than a lot of us come up with

I'm at the point where I don't wanna use anything that isn't painted, of course I almost never get to play so it isn't a huge deal either way, but it kind of pushes me away from larger-scale projects like yours as I know i'll have trouble getting the large horde of minis completed.

I'm quite enjoying the neon-green and silver combo. The green is achieved through a basecoat and liberal application of the nurgle technical paint? I may have to look back into it, as your results are quite spiffy

Made in us
Mutated Chosen Chaos Marine

NorCal

Heh, thanks man. TBH the colors came out better than I expected. Would you believe this is a project I essentially started about 4 years ago?

For the neon green sections I used Reaper Olive Green for base, Reaper Pale Olive layer, green wash x2, highlight w/Citadel Rotting Flesh. At this point you can go back and add another stage of wash to areas you want to be more green...for example the "web" sections of the wings on the Raptor Pack Leader. Finish it off with a glaze of Nurgle's Rot. Not a liberal application, just a glaze. You can add another layer of glaze to areas you want to be more "puss" colored, for example the tips of the horns on the aforementioned model.

Finished the 3rd & final primary color phase, basic Screaming Skull base/layer with brown wash x2 and Screaming Skull highlights. The portions that are "living" claws & armor got a glaze as described above. This worked out surprisingly well, esp since I had been trying to think of a way to get a more yellowish finish on the Scorpion Lord's armored sections for the last week.

Detailing will be next.

Side note, once they are finished up I'll be taking a couple of these to show to a local shop owner who is interested in selling them.
