Hey guys, I am very new to the game just started a week ago. I just have a question about how exactly a command squad works. One: Is it the Commander of your army plus 5 other guys? or 5 guys including the Commander? And two: Can one guy in the Command squad carry a heavy ranged weapon?
I would appreciate any help you can give.

Also if it makes any difference I am playing Space marines. I also am sorry if I posted in the wrong spot.

The codex entry will clearly say what weapons can or can't be taken, but the command squad is a separate unit. The Commander is not a part of it and stays an Independent Character and separate entry. So it would be the Commander + the five other guys as a unit of their own that the Commander can join.

A command squad is just four Vets and a Vet Sergeant with bolters. The Capitan sold separately. If their entry in the Codex says, "May take one weapon from the Heavy Weapons List" then yes. If not, no. I believe they can be outfitted with four Special Weapons like Guard command squads. So there's that.

I don't believe that Command Squads changed much from the previous edition of the Codex (aside from being allowed Grav Guns), so you should be OK there.
The Captain / Chapter Master is separate from the 5 guys, and does not need to accompany them during the game.
- The shiny gold guy in the command squad is the Company Champion (not a Captain).

Sweet thanks!! Is someone able to use a flamer or Plasma gun??? Im just really confused because the command squad box comes with them but the book says only melee and ranged.

Yeah, flamer, plasma, melta and Grav guns are all allowed, it was edited in an FAQ after the codex release. Here:

Ah, yes, they can - this was missed out of the book and had to be added as an Errata, here's a link:
