Simple question. Who in your opinion is the best sculptor around these days? I have always liked Alex Hedstrom but I have been looking into stepping away from Gw recently. Whose work should I be checking out?

Like you say, it's pure opinion.
Some guys/girls are great at sculpting monsters, Trish Morrison, others sexy pirate nurse french maids, Werner Klocke, others historical with a tiny bit of heroic, Perry twins and some just did the stuff we grew up with that we all love Juan Diaz and Jes Goodwin.

I may be biased because I love Infinity so much, but Fausto Gutierrez:

http://3dtraditionalsculptor.blogspot.com/

From organic shapes to caricatures to armored/mechanical models, they're all done very well. All digitally sculpted.. Some of the dioramas are ridiculous. Some of y favorite recent Infinity models.

Personally I like that Kev White couples skill with a very admirable attitude.
But I also have love for Erntz (sp) who works for Crooked Dice, Kev Adams, and Werner Klocke.

For me it has to be either Jacques-Alexandre Gillois or Allan Carrasco.

Amongst others these four do superb, detailed work Stephane Simon, Alan Carrasco, Valentine Zak, Roberto Chaudon

(Id also include MIKH as long as you're not waiting for him to finish a sculpt for a KS or pre-order, but if it's in store the;re generally fantastic)

I also really love Kev Adams for the pure character and charm of his goblinoids

I'll vote for Allan Carasco too. Fantastic person as well. Although I also love Kev White and Andrew Rae from Statuesque. Almost anything Infinity.

How long is a piece of string?

There are many amazing sculptors, some excel in certain fields, others in others. I could compile a list with 20 or so names and instantly realize I'd left off a ton of excellent sculptors.

I tend to like particular sculpts and really don't care who sculpted them.

As a result, I have favourite sculpts but no overall favourite sculptor.

It's also art, so highly subjective.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

Werner Klocke is always awesome, in multiple scales! I find he does some of the best females, elves, and dwarves.

Gael Gouman has some talent. Here http://mandragoreminiatures.free.fr/home.htm It does not look like he has updated in a while though.

Really though, Most of these sculptors named have produced outstanding work. Trying to rank them, or pick one favorite, bah. Enjoy them all for their own merits.

It depends on what you mean by "best". Traditional or CAD? Most original design or best at bringing projects together? Best looking model, ease of assembly, number of options?

There are a few names that really need mentioning; Aly Morrison, Steve Buddle, Keith Robertson, and Julie Guthrie are immediate stand outs.

My favorite sculptor is without a doubt Jes Goodwin. He isn't just a great sculptor, but also an amazing concept designer. After that, probably Kev White of Hasslefree fame. Such a natural and fun sculpting style with a brilliant eye for posing. Technically though, the best sculptors would probably be many of those who sculpt for Mierce and Arena Rex. Amazingly intricate and beautiful pieces of art.

Thanks for the replies. I have done a lot of googling the names I hadn't heard of and am now considering causing my wallet some serious pain. I would use this thread an an example of why all the arguments about the quality of various models are so meaningless. There are almost as many different choices as replies here. Edit, should have probably said favourite rather than best in the opening post.

Srsly?

I'll never get over the Morley Highelves with enormous shovel hands.
Then there's Nagash, who was a compromise of sorts but even a better skull head on that model wouldn't have saved it.

Gary Morley is really inconsistent. Those LotR Elf characters... yikes.
