Hey,

I've had a Ogre Kingdoms Battalion box lying around for awhile now and I want to get round to building them, but first I'd like to ask some questions because there isn't much info out there about these guys.

Firstly, in the box you get 6x Ironguts, 6x Ogors, 4x Leadbelchers.. but really all the sprues are exactly same, just get extra ones with the different unit weapon options.. so I don't actually need to build it like that.

So question one should I build the exact box or possibly drop the leadbelchers and just build the other units? (I don't have the generals handbook right now but for the points system do i need two battleline units, so maybe I should build two units of ogors, well thats if they are the battleline?)

Second question, for the standard ogors you can take either Clubs and Blades which allows you to reroll 1s for hit or take Iron Fists which does a mortal wound to the unit attacking you if you roll a 6 save, but that unit must be within 1 inch.

My thoughts of the above is mortal wounds are great but if the unit that is wounding you is further away (shooting) then the iron fists would be useless but Clubs and Blades are always useful.

Another question about this unit is Great Beast Skull or Tribal banner.. Skull: when an enemy model flees when 6" of the ogors you can roll a dice and if its a 6 another model must flee, This sounds good as a lot of this army's abilities are to make units flee.. Tribal banner: Re-roll battle shock rolls of 6 and also can take a lookout grot on top of it which gives you a a 6+ save on missile attacks, sounds good but Im not sure how often ogors would actually flee anyway with such low model counts per unit.

Sorry that was a lot of question but I dont have any experience with this army at all and can't decide.

Appreciate the help!

Thanks

EDIT: I also just thought if an ogor is getting hit with -2 rend then the ironfists wouldn't work either actually.

Unless you expect to be fighting plenty at 1" range, take the blades, when you charge you get to reroll 1's to hit and 1's to wound.

Leadbelchers are okay, they actually seem to do more damage in melee then range.

Ironguts are amazing

You can build 8 Ironguts from the box, which I suggest doing if you are going for a pure power approach. Blades vs Ironfists is a matter of two things: how many wizards you are running and if the unit is going to camp in cover very often. The trick being that +1 to saves from mystic shield and/or cover will affect the trigger rate on ironfists (rend also will). You don't have to pick one banner or the other because you can have two banner bearers in the unit; one of each.

I chose an avatar I feel best represents the quality of my post history.

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.

Given that units are bought in 3's, I'd suggest building:

6 Ironguts + 3 Ogres + 3 Ogres + 3 Leadbelchers + 1 Hero

This makes a legal 1000 point list with more than enough battleline units (3 until you leave Gutbusters, at which point it goes to 2), that's also decently varied and quite brutal. You've got the points for every foot hero - I'd say Tyrant for a proper leader, but a Butcher is easier to convert from the Ogre plastics (a Tyrant always seems to be too wee when kitbashed from such a small body) and does a little bit more in game.

Definitely two weapons. Mine have ironguts, and while I love the look, they aren't really very good in AOS, for all those caveats you're noticing.
Another question about this unit is Great Beast Skull or Tribal banner.
I say banner, almost entirely because of the gnoblar, but rerolling that unlucky 6 battleshock is always helpful, while the other benefit doesn't always happen (i.e. on the way into range).

This is what I would suggest as well. Ironguts are Grade A buttkickers. Ogors are eh. Leadbelchers are also just sort of eh. Nto bad by any means, they are a bit random with their shooting is all. If you are doing strictly pitched battle then you'll need two units of ogors. They aren't that great in low numbers but they're mostly there to just take objectives and get in the way. I personally like them with the ironfists, especially if combined with cover and / or mystic shield. It procs on a roll of a 6 or HIGHER not just a 6. So if you are in cover and have a mystic shield, it goes off on a 4+. Which can be really good. Yes, it is only 1" from the model, but your opponent usually pulls casualties from the back, so there will almost always be targets nearby.

I would say use some extra ironguts bitz to convert one leadbelcher body into a Butcher. With some head or bit swaps you can make a pretty distinct looking ogre. Here is the example I made from extra ogre bits.

Butchers are a good cheap little spellcaster (for ogres). The Maw ability is also not too bad, especially for killing enemy heroes.

As for banners I would say to do the banner option with the gnoblar. It's unlikely that you will have ogors running away with only 3 models in the unit, but you never know. And they 6+ save against range is always useful to have.

Great answers guys thanks!

Seems like I will probably be going blades over ironfists with most of the answers going that way.

You can take both banners? Never knew that..

As for converting one into a hero I did think of that but there is a really nice maneater model i was thinking of getting to use as a tyrant but I'll see what conversions I can do!
