Hi, Warhammer 40k noob and soon-to-be addict here. After settling on the Dark Vengeance starter set today I tried to find the best deal for paints that I could find on the market, and this one seems to fit the bill.
https://www.games-workshop.com/en-AU/Build-Paint-Set-ENG

With my little to no knowledge of paints, does this set come with a primer? I'd like to keep myself from spending more money than I have to on fixing up the DC set.

It does not. If you want a primer from GW you'll want their Chaos Black and Corax White sprays.

I would also recommend against getting that set. You can get a lot of these colors for less from Vallejo and GW glue is pants. It also doesn't include a hobby knife which is very important. Get an x-acto knife. It's cheaper and every bit as good as a GW knife.

Thought for the day: Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

Any primer that works on plastic is probably fine too, doesn't have to be GW's sprays (maybe just test it first on a bit of spare sprue to make sure it works OK).

Do you have a local GW/FLGS that stocks paints? You're probably better off just buying the basic pots to get you started, then grabbing what you need later. Caliban Green, Leadbelcher, Mephiston Red and Nuln Oil is probably all you need to get you started painting the Dark Angel Tactical Squad to a Table Top quality and that will keep you going for a little while.

The first bit is very provably false, only use model primer paint do not use walmart primer, stick with GW, army painter, Vallejo, ect ect, just dont get stuff from walmart haha

To many unpainted models to count.

I have no idea about the quality of Walmart primers (I don't live in the US), but in Australia I use the Rust-Oleum primers which you can get from Bunnings and they work fine, plus they're like a third of the price for a bigger can. And it comes in Grey.

All I can add...do not buy that overpriced crap set from GW. $55 can get you all of those materials and paints (in actual proper size bottles!) for less. Skip that junk.

A pretty easy rule to follow if getting into a Games Workshop game: anything you can buy elsewhere? Do it.

Games Workshop makes nice models (arguably pricey but nice) but they sell all of their hobby supplies at ridiculous prices. No reason to not go to Warstore or something and find the same products for 40% of the price. It's a lot like buying automotive accessories from the dealership - when you ask them why floor mats are $250...

To be clear DV is a good buy the paint starter set is not.

To many unpainted models to count.

I would actually say DV is a meh buy cuz the Start Collecting! sets are so much more awesome, and doesn't lock you into two opposing forces.

Also Rustoleum is a primer sold in walmarts here But apparently is good. I use Krylon and it has the exact same effect as GW primers, but walmart stopped carrying it here.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

If you want chaos then DV is great. Crack out the liquid green stuff and those dark angels are instantly nurgle marines. Nurgle bikes are great eh?

You can get so much more bang for your buck buying non-GW paints.

Here is an example 42 paints+ 7 washes and brushes. Plus in dropper bottles.

Which is why it's a "meh" buy. If you want Chaos, great. But it's gonna require some elbow grease to get them to look "Chaosy" enough.
