I've been giving Vermintide a try on account of the free period and it's ok. But it keeps resetting my key bindings which... this game has been out for a while now. This should not be a thing that happens.

It's a damned good game imho if you're in it for the story and an ace twist here and there. I picked it up on a whim myself and was pleasantly surprised by the setting, story and all that other stuff.

I want to give online modes a try for once, since I used to be too shy to do so. Left 4 Dead has turned out pretty good, so I bought Vermintide for when I get bored of it.
Then I noticed the 45GB size.

Booting up Civ 4 again. I swear, turning on Aggressive AI makes the game hilarious. The last game turned into a cold war between the Native Americans, Byzantines, and the Persians. It wasn't uncommon to find a least 3 notifications a turn on missiles that were launched.
This time, it seems my three allies are fighting a secret war against each other, while trying to get on my good side. I like to think they despise each other, but act like nothing's happened when someone else asks.

Not liking how they play, or are they a pain in the arse?
I found IG was one of the easier forces to play on my first run. specially on the fourth mission.

Yeah, it's kinda ancient. Me and a friend decided to play through Gold and Silver in parallel and just enjoy the oldschool experience. We're giving our pokémon thematic and/or silly nicknames and keeping each other updated as we progress.

Decided to treat myself to some space-themed games with the Turing Test and No Man's Sky, both on sale right now. Refunded the latter after 45 minutes due to clunky controls and other issues, liking the Turing Test though, a nice puzzler that's presenting a fun bit of story so far.

It's come a long way since it first launched, but still not a game for everyone. Still very much a love-it-or-hate-it game. I'm in the "love it" camp, but it is a game that demands a lot of your time to play.

I wouldn't go that far, but my experience with it has been less than stellar. The game booted up for me in a forced windowed mode that I couldn't fix until I was ingame and rebooted the game again, but it took a while to get there as first time around it got stuck on the loading screen. Then once rebooted it hung up on me when trying to play a new game again. Mind, my rig is a beast and can run DOOM on ultra without breaking a sweat.

I also found the controls and interface clunky, cumbersome and all that.

I may revisit it, if they ever do decide to toss in actual cooperative play, but at this stage it's not what I am looking for.

Very much enjoying Prey. Its like a hybrid of system shock, bioshock and deus ex.
Terrific setting and lots to do/explore.
However combat is tough, very tough and the way enemies can randomly enter back into "cleared" areas and wreck your turrets at will is a bit meh.

Still a good 20 quid purchase though!

Yeah, I scaled the combat difficulty back down to easy myself, as even on normal I struggled to survive!

Picked up the Diablo 3 battle chest after hearing how much the game has improved since its release years ago. Tried the demo beforehand, not disappointed.

Started out with a barbarian, quite hilarious to make enemies explode when they die, makes for a fun chain reaction, but I am now playing a monk and quite enjoying this class, probably doing it wrong, but nothing quite like going Kenshiro on a horde of mooks.

Accidentally spending four hours walking along the single tracked road which goes around Vvradenfell in The Elder Scrolls Online with another player. We made it from Balmora to Vos, half the circumferance of the island. Hah, and who says Vvradenfell's tiny, its just that you're sprinting everywhere.

Walking does give you time to appreciate the little details the devs put into things, or what they missed out. We discovered a strange game the devs must have based on something - a cross between a roulette table and chess by the looks of it. Also that the town of Gnisis' temple is missing Vivec's Ash Mask (poor show). We got to thinking at one point, "here's this shelf. It has all these little details on it. Youknow, are we the first people in this game to actually look at what's on this shelf?". Probably.

Been playing Destiny 2 on the PC. hella fun, but as usual now that I finished the main campaign and the extra bonus quests, the game is winding down for me. I'm not into doing the same thing over and over again to grind for endgame content (same problem I have with WoW), so I'll just go play once in a while off and on till the expansion happens in December.

Thinking about picking up Batthefront 2, but I may just wait and save my cash to get an XboneX in a couple months. Haven't decided yet.

Jumped back into Dragon Age Origins, playing the Awakening expansion. It's actually pretty good so far, the plot and character progression seem to be moving along at a somewhat faster pace than the base game which I greatly appreciate (there's a good chunk of Origins I find tedious as hell. The Fade and Deep Roads segments especially). Given that my initial reason for playing it was to do some 'research' as I'm currently running a DA pen and paper RPG campaign set in the aftermath of Origins, I'm definitely enjoying it more than expected... Though I do miss my Marbari hound, the true Hero of Fereldan.

I'm also playing a bit of Battlefront 2 on the EA Access trial, still not convinced that it's something I want to buy at full price. Yes, there's more content than last time but the game's commitment to asymmetric game modes is not something I'm keen on, it means that even though there's more maps you're doing the same thing on them every time. Needs a proper, traditional symmetrical Conquest/Domination mode.

Trying to do some research on Quake 3 to see why people seem to love it so much. I adore UT2004, but Quake 3 just isn’t getting to me quite yet. Heard something about learnign the game’s physics system to properly understand how it works, which seems like it makes sense.

I think Awakening is my favorite iteration of DA. It has some nice refinements and interesting characters, and hasn't been 'streamlined' like DA2 and DAI. Also, there is a mod that skips the whole Fade segment of DAO - you should play it once but after that it's just annoying.

Got bit by the Skyrim bug again. BUT... having the ability to mod is a great and terrible responsibility.

I'm going on a small tear, rebalancing things.

For one, Wards are WAY too expensive- so I reduced the cost of the middle and lesser ones significantly- even then, they're still pretty expensive, so I think it was a justified, uh, buff?

For two- CORUNDUM ISN'T A METAL and it's certainly not used in steel production. So that's out- instead, Steel requires Charcoal. And so I also put in a charcoal recipe... I rather want to see if I can't get the Corundum Ore veins to only give rubies and sapphires instead of 'metal' ore.

Also, made it so that you can craft both male and female specific Forsworn headdresses.

But yeah. Dangerous stuff, having that much power.

I actually want to develop a whole major mod, adding... Bakers! Because seriously, there's so much bread everywhere, but nobody is baking it! I figure it could be a cool addition to the whole immersive world of Skyrim.

I would most thoroughly recommend it if you're into the system shock/bioshock/HL1/DX genres.
Really was a gem of a game - 36 hours all in and felt like an actual triple A title.

Prey doesn't really need a sequel, the story told as is did a good enough job IMHO. It does warrant a replay somewhere down the line, now that the major plot elements are known to you. It makes you look at things like the tutorial in a different light as well.

I'm still working through my second playthrough whenever I feel like playing for a few hours, going for a non-psionic build on this playthrough, just calmly exploring everything this time around.

Worth mentioning that Prey(2017) is on the Black Friday games list for Xbox Gold in case anyone's interested in it there. It's $20.

Back on board with The Witcher 3, I think I finally 'get it' and what it's meant to be. It took me the better part of 15-20 hours to reach that point, but having made some significant plot progress over the last few days, finished dealing with one of the most obnoxious characters in gaming (The Bloody Baron) and coming across some more engaging ones (who I find myself far more willing to invest in than I am in Geralt...), I think I'm back in. Though having just finished things off in Novigrad and headed to Skellige, I'm tempted to put it on hold and start the second game, which I picked up in the Xbox sale a few days back.

I really enjoyed Witcher 3, like, a lot. Witcher 2 was also great, (especially it's take on the classic Troll-under-the-bridge quest), but I found the world of 3 much more absorbing. The Bloody Baron questline was fantastic and disturbing in equal measure, and really drives home the "no real good or bad guys" theme.

The DLC for Witcher 3 is top notch, too. After what felt like rain and grey skies forever in Redania and Skellige, the sunny, not-France setting for Blood and Wine felt like a vacation.

Currently addicted to They are Billions.

RTS with wondering bands of zombies that will attack individually, then in bigger, faster groups, then in massive waves. All the while you are building up your base, collecting resources and researching new stuff. I’m currently getting my ass kicked about 20 days(of 100) into the survival mode. Making progress though.

I downloaded the xbox version of Player Unknown's Batthegrounds.. what a disappointment. Boring as hell, and the graphics are like gen 1 xbox quality. You just wander around looking for weapons till you can find a camper to blow your head off like a half hour later. Really don't see what the hype was all about with this game.

I actually asked Microsoft for a refund and they said no.. wish I got it for steam, at least they aren't dbags about it when you hate something you bought from them.

I think I would have liked it better on steam. This video is making fun of it, but it's actually pretty accurate for what it was like for me..

Yes, when journalists where brought in for a presentation on the upcoming console port, they were allowed to play the PC version, which did not exactly instil a lot of confidence in the upcoming port.

And waaaaaaaaait, is this game going to have cross-compatible servers?

If so.. this should be good.

Lots of streamers played it with each other and had a good time in a separate voice chat program joking around. Somehow when that happens, viewers think the enjoyment comes from the game, rather than people who know each other hanging out.

I finally managed to get in Shogun 2's Fall of the Samurai after a few failed attempts.

What looked like an easy waltz to victory as the Obama clan of the central region has suddenly turned into a crisis with Samurai rebellions and naval bombardments destabilising my heartlands and sending my economy into free fall whilst my powerful armies are isolated and besieged in the shattered cities that I have torn apart to fund my ongoing war with the powerful Northern alliance.

Whats worse is that my long time ally has chosen this time to betray me and the Imperialist clans of the southern region are starting to get restless now my bribes and trade deals have dried up!

As you can probably tell it is the most fun I have had with a Total War campaign for some time

Having a lot of fun with Assassin's Creed Origins. It's a great refresh of the series, the world is superbly massive and detailed and the combat is lovely and punchy.

Most importantly though, it has a photo mode...

Was invited to play the Sea of Thieves technical alpha last weekend through tomorrow, has been an absolute delight! It has been a long time since I have truly loved playing a game. Even my old go to games like the Fallout series and Battlefield have gotten stale and it took a concerted effort to actually sit down to play them.

Sea of Thieves has changed that. Not only is it graphically gorgeous, for an alpha its well optimized and has several features that most consoles do not offer (FOV settings being one). The graphics are stunning, most notably (and importantly IMO) the water effects are beautiful!

It is really fun to group up with my buddy who also got an invite and sail about the map, find treasure, fight other pirates etc. The combat is very tense for a game that doesn't take itself too seriously. Having all the hallmarks of sailing strategy and running back and forth to alter sails for better wind while chasing down another ship, or even the exact opposite. It takes a lot of teamwork and is loads of fun.

If you haven't, I would recommend going to their website and signing up for the insider program to see if you can get in on the closed beta.

Out of curiousity, what didn’t you like about They Are Billions?

I’m having a blast, just playing it casually. I’m getting better at it, but still have not won a single survival map.

I've gotten into Battlefield 1 on PC again since I have the season pass or whatever it is and get all the expansions. I've really been enjoying it and the newer maps and weapons are pretty awesome and I guess there's more on the way in January.

My buddy is trying to get to play PUBG on Xbox but I'm not interested. I played for a while on PC and just got bored with it, even though it could be fun occasionally.

Ya, I'm in the same boat with PUBG.

I feel like the game would be better served with a class system or faster, more meaningful progression. Or finding customization credits among the ruins, instead of getting a paltry amount after every match. That's what really killed the game for my group. Run around for 20 minutes, get the squad geared up, then get ganked from who knows where when the circle shrinks and you have to run across a field. The juice wasn't worth the squeeze.

I will say though, jumping in alone on a team game is pretty good fun. Its so much more intense when you are outnumbered and are getting hunted!

I would really avoid pubg on xbox if I were you. I dunno maybe it will get better over time, but the graphics and lag and gameplay was so bad. I'm still salty they won't give me a refund for such a gak product. I wonder if I should call my credit card company and see if I can do a charge back?

Maybe it's better on XboneX, and that's what they want the target audience to be or whatever ... but I wouldn't get it if you have a regular xbox one like me.

I've been interested in PUBG for a while and was looking forward to the Xbox release, but there's no way I'm buying it until it's out of the Game Preview early access scheme. I can see how there'd be significant technical challenges porting to a console, but even then the initial reviews for the Xbox version are incredibly off-putting.

I got into Battlefield 1 during the Black Friday sale on Xbox. They had the "Revolution" edition(game+season pass) for $30...so I pulled the trigger. It's a great campaign and I am loving Operations.

I guess they've been making it so that the DLC is broken into two parts. Part I of Turning Tides released and now we get Part II in January.

Started up a new profile on the PS4 about a month or so ago and picked up COD ww2, kind of burnt my self out on multi plus the maps are getting boring now. So now moved on the Horizon and downloaded War Thunder again last night.

Haven’t played War Thunder in a long while probably about the time ground forces were released. Obviously I played a few matches today and am pretty crap now lol. Oh and played a bit of Sudden Strike 4. Not ground breaking and a little clunky but when it’s works it’s good fun.
Feels great when you capture a few enemy tanks/vehicles and use them on their former owners.

Just spent about 5 hours re-downloading all the mods for my last not finished F:NV playthrough. Man, achieving balance is not easy with this game, but, once you manage, it is SO good. I bloody love it and the mods I am playing with (if you haven't, try out Someguy2000's stuff. Great stories, decent to really good voice acting and brutally difficult at times. Amazing!!).

Also, I finally downloaded Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor. Really looking forward to that over the holidays.

And TF2 is always fun, even though I really have to practice RJing more^^

Absolute cracker of a game, that, and I imagine that while the graphics are dated, the combat still holds up as I remember it being an incredibly fun hack'n'slasher. I may be remembering it through rose-tinted glasses as it was my first ever game on my first ever console and I played the hell out of it, but yeah, it's certainly one of the better movie adaptation games. If you enjoy it, the Two Towers one is just as good.

But yeah, it was certainly tricky. I still never beat the final Mount Doom/Gollum mission!

A rather disappointing Steam sale is going on right now, so I decided to pick up What Remains of Edith Finch, a walking simulator that isn't overly pretentious or trying too hard to shoot for gaming awards. An interesting concept and the stories it tells are fine, it's a bit rubbish at answering questions though.

I've got the Two Towers waiting to be played after this one

The one thing I've really noticed about going back to the PS2 is how clunky the analog sticks are which can be a bit frustrating. Currently stuck on the King of the Dead mission just can't seem to get past him, think I may have to go back and level up legolas or aragorn in the previous mission to get through it.

The Two Towers one is great apart from one level where you have to defend a small gate into the Hornburg after the Deepening Wall gets blown up.
Not only is it a super boring wave survival mission but I remember the difficulty is rock solid!

Although I played it so many times trying to get good at it that I think I have Stockholm Syndrome and am weirdly fond of it now...

Those games were definitely formative in terms of my gaming habits! I'm pretty sure the King of the Dead boss fight in RotK was where I (eventually, after many many hours of banging my head against the proverbial wall) learned that melee bosses can't hit you while you're running away, aka kiting! Followed by the discovery that ranged attacks are a cheap way to whittle down bosses and trash mobs are just the worst! Knowledge that's served me well for the next 15-odd years of gaming!

Now I think about them though, I realise how much I take for granted in modern games. Being able to move the camera for example. With the amount of times I died in the LotR ones because an enemy I couldn't see hit me from just off-screen, I could form an Army of the Dead of my very own!

lol

Every vehicle in the game is at least theoretically balanced. My main complaint about wheeled vehicles is that they handle *too* well, and I have a bad habit of turning too sharply and crashing into things when I switch to driving one right after driving a tank.

You're gonna have a bad time of it, I'm afraid.

Oh, I'm sure that there's plenty of fine re-texture mods out there, and probably a lot that re-mesh the world to look nicer, too, but as for people? You're gonna have two options. Potato-faces or overly-sexualized barbie dolls. There are no middle grounds.

My advice is to just run with the squattyness. Get the Construction Kit, make yourself a Dwarf race (copy the Imperial template, reduce height to about 60%, increase width by a half, re-jigger starting stats, powers and abilities- I suggest giving them boosted beginning Endurance or Stamina) and go to town with it.

To be honest, I pretty much gave up after a few attempts. Even with some graphics mods, the gameplay is just so clunky, especially going back to it after 6 years of Skyrim.

On the flipside however, I finally got around to Prey, which so far is just wonderful (though I've come to expect no less from Arkane Studios after the amazing Dishonored series). Amazingly atmospheric, wonderfully clever and inventive gameplay, great voice acting, and a fascinating space to explore. Top stuff thus far.

To be fair, I've been on board with Prey since it first came out, it's just inexplicably taken ages for me to get around to playing it. All I hoped was that the game would meet my very high expectations when I got to it, and so far it absolutely has. It just ticks all the boxes of great game design; it rewards exploration and lateral thinking, it offers a multitude of ways to achieve any given task, it constantly encourages you to pay attention to lore notes and such (whereas so many games make it so easy to ignore them. Prey and Dishonored usually give you some tangible reward for paying attention to books/notes/ages ect which is great).

Arkane are pretty much the best devs in the business at the moment for my money, and Prey might be their masterpiece. I hope that despite both it and Dishonored 2 under-performing profit-wise, they can get together the funding to go on making such excellent games.

You may love photo mode, but the thing I absolutely fething hate about it, is that *MY* game map is bombarded with everyone else's gak photos (and really, some of them are quite bad screen caps) I've looked and looked, and, unless there's been a feature added in an update I've missed, there's no way for me to turn off those uploads.

As for myself, I got my kids the Lego Marvel 2, so I've been playing that (I tend to help them unlock many of the characters), and some Fallout 4.

Like, seriously, all I wanted was to make Corundum not be a metal (it's a gemstone mineral). And now I've created an entirely new crafting category, re-colored all the Ancient Nord weapons, re-jiggered the Forsworn tempering recipes, added a whole new type of ore, and I'm planning on adding in Bronze Nord daggers, maces, and warhammers.

Finished Mario Odyssey, debating if I even have the time to 100% it. A great game don't get me wrong, but I don't see how it was such a revolutionary masterpiece like many said it was. I feel Odyssey is on the same level as Galaxy was when that came out, but Galaxy did it first I guess. I dunno, I might just be hard to please

Everything about it was great to look at, and every world was very well laid out. I wish the controls made more sense, like mapping dive onto a different button. A and B, X and Y, and the 2 shoulder buttons all do the same thing, but you couldn't put dive onto any one of them?

I've been playing Dragon Age Inquisition and enjoying it a lot. I really like the fantasy world they set up.

Made me want to replay the series once I'm done, but I lost my Origins disks. Saw that Steam had the Ultimate Edition for $7 so I jumped on it (nice that it's got Awakening and all the DLC too, I never got to play those), and grabbed the HD mods for it and Dragon Age 2. Dragon Age 2 holds up pretty well with the HD mod. Origins less so, but it's not too bad.

Stellaris! Finally picked it up over the steam winter sale. My mushroom people built a bloated empire and began starving to death, haunted by my inexplicable decision to research a toilet left in solar orbit. It can sound fun, but i strongly advise really looking into it first. It is definitely not for everyone. It really depends what you're looking for. If you're looking for a sandbox where most of what happens is in stories in your own head, it's fine.

For a 4x/Empire Management game... it has some serious problems, including an amazingly dull middle-game and pretty terrible combat, where ships pew-pew each other over the course of months.

But all is either lost or saved, depending on how you view it- the next patch is basically armageddon: a huge revamp, including of core conceits and mechanics. The starting three modes of space travel (hyperlanes, wormholes, warp), for example, are getting tossed out and reduced to one, because the lead designer believes hyperlanes are the 'most fun.'

Bought the first 5 Assassin's Creed games, Telltale Batman Season 1, and Mortal Kombat XL in the Steam Sale.

Then my PC died on Christmas Eve.

Just got it back, so this weekend is going to be all games and no sleep. Gotta start with MKXL!!!

I absolutely agree. Sins of a Solar Empire it is not- combat is totally hands off, and 'tactics' are just making the biggest stack and crashing into someone. I'd say it's an exploration and expansion game, rather than a 4x. In my experience once the fighting starts, it is remarkably easy to lose and nearly impossible to recover from an equal empire.

That being said, the random events and multitude of empires made it well worth the 16 bucks I paid for it. Space is huge, and full of interesting events, total wastes of time, and the occasional Event Horizon derelict. I love the narrative as big and open as the universe aspect to it.

I didn't know about the patch- I think I'd have preferred the ability to research the various modes of travel.

In terms of expanding game content rather than just new guns/armour or visual improvements, I highly recommend Tales from the Commonwealth. It's a quest mod that adds around 20 new quests (some quite short, others fairly lengthy and quite a few that link together), 3 new companions with their own affinity quests and as much (if not more) dialogue than the base game ones, everything is fully voiced* and by and large, very well written. Definitely something to stick on for a second playthrough to add some original content.

*Including the player character, thanks to some clever editing of base game dialogue.

Yeah, I think you should be safe to install mid-game (at least, as safe as any other large mod). My advice is to make a save in an interior location so you're not in the world while it makes its changes and so you have somewhere to reload to if anything does break. Then wait there for a day or two in-game just so all the encounters ect refresh with the new stuff.

In terms of scaling to level, it does so as much as the rest of the game so you shouldn't have any problems there.

All I'd advise against is uninstalling mid-playthrough, it adds/edits a lot so removing it might cause issues. But that really goes for big mods in general.

Endless Space 2 is really good but it's not just about exploration but generally going to your faction's main strengths. The factions are very unique. It's a great game.

Pulled out XCom 2 again. I was quickly reminded that if you stay covert for more than a few turns, patrolling AI groups are basically told where your squad members are, and make a beeline toward them to trigger the alert state.

That is encouraging! I have that game, but i'm always leery about playing with other people because i'm not the best at, well, any of that sort of game, and because i've run into too much unpleasantness before.

Star Wars Battlefront II. And before you start throwing things, I mean the good one! I'd say it's held up surprisingly well over the last 12 years (I feel old!), but there's not really anything surprising about it. Fun is fun regardless of what decade you're in, and that game distilled fun to an art form. Fast without being overly reliant on twitchy reflexes, open without maps needing to be several km long, varied without being shallow... It remains incredible.

Having recently played a bit of the newer game of the same name, I think the most remarkable difference (in the original's favour) is how organic it all feels. If there's a massive scrum for a control point or an intense shootout along a corridor, it's because that's where the two sides have naturally met; in the new one, if there's anything like that it's because there's a big objective marker pointing every player on the map to a single point, at which one side is obliged to throw bodies while the other is obliged to kill them as quickly as possible.

I also reckon just the core gameplay is better. Weapons are more varied, classes are more specialised and balanced, rapid and intelligent movement is more important for survival than just hunkering behind cover. Tactics are more fluid thanks to the mission structure. There's a real joy in leading a squad of AI troops on a flanking manoeuvre , or hopping in an enemy tank to wreck their spawn points and you just can't do that on the new one.

Yes, the new ones are insanely pretty, and I really enjoy Battlefront (2015) a lot. But in terms of the complete, immersive and most importantly fun Star Wars battle experience, BFII has never been bettered. And stick it on an HD telly via the Xbox 360, whack up the contrast/colour strength and it doesn't even look dreadful. In a perfect world, it gets added to the XBOne/original Xbox backwards compatibility list soon and they bring the online servers back online like they have with the PC version, but sadly I think that's an outside possibility until the new one is out of the spotlight.

I was running the first black site mission yesterday. I'd bypassed the first turret, and a patrol that came in from the north of the map, reached the turret, and then turned around and went back the other way. Stuck a Sharpshooter up in the tower so that she could provide overwatch, and the rest of the squad sneaked on ahead. I still hadn't been detected yet.

Several turns later, the patrol from the north came back. This time, they didn't turn around at the turret and head back north. I decided to watch and see what they would do - were they listening to the footsteps of my squad, and were they going to follow the moving members?

Actually, no.

Instead, what they did was to make a bee-line for the tower that I'd placed my Sharpshooter in, and climb it. Once at the top, they were immediately close enough to my Sharpshooter to detect her.

I'd saved the mission at the start, so I decided to do some experiments. On the next run, I took everyone (including the sharpshooter) around the southern end of the base to try and bypass the enemy patrols and get easy access to the destination location. I ended up having to deal with four patrols simultaneously as they all "coincidentally" happened to converge on my location at the map's southwestern corner within a turn or two of each other.

One more experiment. This time, after restarting, I went straight on in, guns blazing. I blew up the turret. I took out the patrol. Then I got surprised by another patrol. I recognized this patrol as one of the ones that had caught up to me at the south-western corner of the map. But strangely, based on where it pathed into me, it was supposed to be wandering around the northern part of the map. The other patrols were inside the base, so no particular surprises there.

So my experiments revealed the following -

1.) On my first attempt, the Advent patrol didn't follow the noisy squad members. Instead, it made a bee-line for the silent sharpshooter - who also happened to be the nearest member of my squad.
2.) On my second attempt, four patrols from different parts of the map all just happened to converge on my location in a corner of the map at the same time.
3.) On my third attempt, I learned that one of the patrols in the previous test had apparently come from the far end of the map in order to bump into me.

And note that this isn't the first time I've experimented with the way that the AI works when your squad is considered "hidden" by the game. Whenever I repeat the experiment, I get the same results. I had one instance in which a patrol quite literally chased me across an entire map (it was a good-sized Advent base map). In short -

- If you go for more than a few turns with none of your squad members detected, then the game tells the patrols (enemies that don't patrol don't move) where to find you so that they can "accidentally" discover you.
- If any of your squad members have been detected (i.e. attacked, or got into detection range of an enemy, even if no enemies currently have line of sight to them), then the AI doesn't tell the patrols where to find you

Decided to play TF2. Unfortunately, it seems I accidentally pressed the voice chat button without noticing. This wouldn't have been bad, if it weren't for the loud fans running in an adjacent room. Hopefully, the noise wasn't too strong on their end.
To avoid this in the future, is there a way to disable the voice chat button, or my mic from picking up sounds? I tried looking it up earlier, but after this I'd like to be absolutely certain.

Forced to start Far Harbour before I was ready because of Knight Rhys (for his continual cheek, did a quick save then smashed his face in with a Baseball bat. It was highly cathartic).

Just returned to finish Resident evil 7.

Was playing destiny until The Curse of Osiris and the Dawning event turned out to be nothing but hot air and microtransactions. Ended up skipping back to Warframe during the holiday period. That was followed up by tagging back into the Division just last week following 1.8 dropping and some good reviews coming out about it's improved state. then the weekend hit and my mates playing the Not a hero and End of Zoe DLC's made me realise that I should really finish RE7.

Dead Space 2.
Quite enjoyable so far. Good gfx and sound for a 2011 release, engine is solid if a little clunky in places. Very cool setting and atmosphere though.

Tried DS1 but man how can you feth up a control port that badly? Mouse even at max sensitivity feels like its dipped in syrup, you cannot use the arrow keys to move or rebind several keys and it just clunks along.
Still looks good/good sound etc but totally unplayable on the PC as it stands

Started playing the Fortnite Battle Royale last night, a lot more fun than PUBG was… Looks great on my 4K TV on Xbox, where PUBG looked like I was playing on a Nintendo 64

Then my girlfriend saw it and asked if she could play, then never gave the controller back :( She’s not a gamer at all, I think it was the first video game she played since Playstation 1 was new. Was kinda like agony teaching her how to use 2 thumb sticks at the same time. But she figured it out and even got a couple of kills.

I was actually sorta disappointed with the expansion. I think the 'long war' mod for xcom 2 really raised the bar too high and that might've been why. I honestly played that more than WotC.

Yeah rpg's basically have the player's character as a freaking errand boy. One more reason i can't stand rpg's. That said in skyrim if you got bored you could just save game and then kill everybody (or at least all armed dudes) in the city. Good way to blow off some steam when bored. I think in skyrim i only left one guard alive in markarth during my first playthrough. Realistically i bet he'd be more shocked i gave up when they only had one guard left and that i didn't just run him through as well. Good news no more corrupt guards. Bad news? Well anybody willing to do crime in the city won't have a hard time and there's only one guard left. Extra good and bad news? One guard does all the guarding but at least he'll get an insanely good promotion now.

This happened to me. Took years to get my PS3 back. Even now, any Tomb Raider, Uncharted or The Last of Us games are apparently hers to finish first.

What shop do i go to to get a girlfriend? What platforms do they come on (platform shoes, high heels?)? Is it compatible with a joystick ;P?

I thought it was a fluke, but it happened to again last night. "I want to play that game where I shoot people" .. if this keeps up I'm gonna have to buy myself an Xbox One X and give her my old one and tell her it's better.

It's kinda funny watching her play. She walks straight ahead, stops, turns left, walks straight ahead, stops, turns again. She hasn't been able to grasp the look with your right thumb and move with your left thumb, and jump or shoot or switch weapons all at the same time. I wanna say LOLNOOB!, but then I'd be sleeping on the sofa

I got my girlfriend into gaming beyond Minecraft and Left 4 Dead (which she played with other friends but wasn't very good at) with the Tomb Raider reboot. She initially watched me play and liked how it was like playing a film. Then she'd play when I left her with my laptop and went to play pen and paper RPGs. Took her quite a while to get the hang of the controls, especially shooting with the bow. So she committed genocide of the little fuzzy animals in the area where you first get it in order to practice

Since then we've co-op completed Halo 1 and 2, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory co-op, Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 and Return to Castle Wolfenstein. We're partway through Brute Force, Return of the King, Borderlands and Project Eden. We've also had multiple Minecraft worlds together, which she was actually teaching me about On her own she's now beaten Assassins Creed 1, Tomb Raider Anniversary and the reboot and sequel.

Rome 2 and Sniper Elite 4.

Rome 2 just for the Empire Divided Campaign and Sniper Elite 4 is like a Hitman game with a WW2 setting. The previous games in the series got pretty repetitive towards the end, hopefully thats not the case in this one.

Third night in a row! Maybe I should get her an Xbone S for valentines day. Last night was kinda funny. she was playing Fortnite again, she likes to hide places and most of the people get killed off. Got real lucky and she was hiding in a bush for the whole game, the circle kept closing around her and she was always in the middle of it. Got real small and was down to 3 players, some sniper guy had to come out right next to the bush and started shooting at the other player, she freaked out like "What do I do??" so I had to take over and I just snuck out and blasted the guy with her shotgun and got first place

She still has a hard time steering, moves real jerky and presses too hard on the stick and ends up turning too far or looking too high or low, but she's getting there. Would be cool if we could both play on separate systems and team up in some games. I keep telling her she should practice on some single player games, but she just wants to kill people.

Overall I'm liking Fortnite's battle royale a lot better than PUBG. I fired up PUBG last night just to see if had any updates or got optimized any better on xbox and it's still the same steaming pile of poo it started ask. Fortnite is the same kinda game but is just a lot more fun IMO.

I've been on a Medieval 2 Total War kick, interspersed with a bit of the new LOTR game - Shadows of mordor or whatever it's called, the sequel. My inner Tolkien purist screams bloody murder, but it's a fun enough game that I can ignore it.

Medieval is great fun - AI is very stupid, but it's fun to go crusading - looking forward to colonising the Americas

I am really enjoying Battle Brothers. It seems to have taken the formula of Darkest Dungeon, replaced the lovecraftian madness with unforgiving combat encounters and more of an open world feel to it. It is a game that doesn't really care if you quit or not- it's just there, beating your carefully created party up. If it were a paper and pencil RPG, it would be Hackmaster.

It's a spoiler for the first game.

But I love what the first letter for each of the chapter's spells out.

Meanwhile, I'm going through the game Prey for a second time on a 'no needle' run.

Grabbed Watchdogs 2 because it was heavily discounted on Humblebundle. I thought the first game was okay, but got pretty dreary and I just gave up after a while. Also the hacking stuff was pretty undercooked for a game that sold itself on that aspect.

Watchdogs 2 is so completely different. Better characters, more interesting city. Hacking still feels a bit undercooked, but the remote vehicles are pretty fun.

Been on a Fallout 4 kick again. . . this play through, for the sake of trophy hunting, I'm either going with RR or Minutemen. Also, completely avoiding ALL Nuka world stuff until main story is done, so that I can utterly smash the "state" that I built

Something something the lord giveth and the lord taketh away

Also, wife headed out on a business trip, and will be gone during my birthday, so got my stuff early, and as a result, am re-playing Black Flag after so long. Oddly, I think that my fleet actions in that game are account based, rather than save file based, I unlocked the fleet "tutorial" mission, and made like 50k Reals, and a bunch of goods, all the ships I remember (after reading names) having were there, etc. etc.

So, its been Fallout4 sniping/rifling everything, or being a bloody pirate in the Caribbean.

Decided to pay for the full version of Fortnite, it's kind of a crafting & horde mode game. Pretty fun so far. I think it was worth the $40.

Still doing the Battle Royale mode too, got first place last night, never thought that would happen. My girlfriend was playing and hiding in a bush the whole time. Circle closed all around and the last guy was sniping from a tower but he had to move out of the tower, she saw him coming and handed the controller to me so I stepped out and shotgunned him.

Hmm, I dunno, everything I've seen in Fortnite has been pretty fun. The Battle Royale mode was a lot more fun than PUBG, and looks way better. PUBG was so boring and laggy compared to this. I've only been doing the PVE stuff for 1 day, but so far it's been pretty fun. There is a LOT of crafting and unlocking of stuff and it seems a little overwhelming for a noob, but not too bad once you start figuring out how stuff works.

And right there is the issue.

The "figuring out how stuff works" part is great for people getting into the game now...but those of us who played at launch got royally screwed over. Not to mention that, as I said, once the Battle Royale mode launched--the PvE side of things basically got sidelined.

Stellaris... Stellaris is a rabbit hole I can see myself falling very far down. I picked it up in the Humble Bundle and, after being impressed that my PC could actually run it, spent about 5 hours this morning playing it, losing track of time completely. As first impressions go, it's pretty striking.

Having seen various Youtube playthroughs, I expected to be entirely overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information, but it's explained well enough (and presented with such an accessible UI) that it wasn't an issue at all.

That said, there are clearly still plenty of lessons for me to learn. Like, for instance, 'when you spawn in one arm of a Spiral galaxy, remember that leaves precisely 2 directions to expand in'... I realised this after making non-aggression pacts with a powerful Empire on each side, and am now very boxed in... This was only a test run though, tomorrow I shall start over and think things through a bit more now I actually get the workings of it.

Yesterday I finished the latest Hitman. Very disappointing.

I loved Absolution and this episode of the franchise has basically no plot and only 6 levels plus tutorials. All those levels are very similar, huge sandbox arenas, while Absolution had much more variety and longevity.

I'm a fan of the mechanics of the game so I enjoyed the release but IMHO Absolution was way better. After two weeks of playing I feel like I've done already everything, while I toyed with Absolution for months. Not to mention the politics of splitting the release into 6 parts, but I've played to the game only when the full release was out so that was not a problem for me, even though I hate the idea behind that.

The mission set in Italy was amazing though, definitely my favorite one

Been getting into Rimworld lately. I gotta admit, I don’t really like this one as much as I like the spontaneously dark nosedive of Dwarf Fortress, but it’s certainly got its good points.
I do like the calmer pace of the game. DF was one disaster after another until you finally cracked. Rimworld seems to give you enough breathing room for things to calm down. Guess it goes without saying that the UI is much easier to work with too.
It seems there’s an ominous building near my base. Maybe the evil that will be inevitably unleashed will have enough FUN for the whole colony.

Did you get that through just regular crates, or are the timed Multiverse events to unlock the movie gear back? I got the full WW set first time round (and my god, at level 20 it's stupidly good!) but missed the Justice League skins for Batman and Flash. If the movie stuff is going into standard loot rotation then that's good, means I might have another chance to grab it when I get back in.

As for myself, finally finished The Witcher 3 yesterday... certainly have to say the game won me round. When I started playing last summer, it was basically to see what all the fuss was about (I got the GotY edition dirt cheap in a sale) and at first, I struggled to see it. Sure, the world was lovely and the combat slick and the voice acting good, but I didn't really get it. What sold it for me was when, after the start of act 2 or so, the old characters starting filtering back in; even as someone who didn't play the other games, and hasn't read the books, seeing Geralt interact with people he actually had a history with brought him to life a bit more. This then makes the third act the strongest, all those characters are pretty much present throughout and it's that last 20 hours or so that really convinced me it was a truly great story, as opposed to just a great game design.

Major spoilers for the whole game below, do not click if you intend to play it.

Spoiler:

Honestly, I think a lot of it hinges on Ciri. It's so rare that a game will set up a character with such a reputation before the character even appears, then actually deliver on that when they do, but Ciri manages it. From the moment you find her, Geralt is so much more alive and thus far more fun to play as, and Ciri herself is just a great character, you can absolutely see why everyone across the cast is willing to risk their necks for her, and it's not because of the whole prophecy thing, it's because she's one of the few genuinely good people in that world, and worth protecting solely because of that. So many scenes she has with other characters, she just elevates them beyond what they were before.

At first, I was kind of annoyed at the game not utilising her earlier, I figured, 'if you have a character that great, why not put them front and centre?'. Then it dawned on me, having those wonderful moments with Ciri, like the snowball fight or the mission to avenge Vesemir or the one where you conclude her unfinished business around Novigrad, comes as a payoff for the 50-odd hours you spend tracking her down. It's genuinely rewarding.

And then there's the ending... Oh, that ending. Having Ciri go into the White Frost was tough enough, but to then bring her back in the epilogue only (in the ending I got, which I feel is probably the 'best' option) to have her whisked away again to go and become Empress, that final scene was heartbreaking. And the genius thing is, that's probably the right thing to do. I know there's an ending where she can stay with Geralt and they just go Witchering together, and that'd be awesome, but it's ultimately quite selfish, I think. The game asks you to make one last sacrifice, and you kind of have to because it is genuinely the right thing to do.

That said, I'd happily play a sequel with Ciri as the main protagonist. Expand her unique combat style, get the same voice actress back, build a game world of similar quality and you'd have the perfect formula for replicating the success of (or even bettering) The Wild Hunt.

And with that done, off to Blood and Wine! Arthurian legend meets Fairytale France meats Gothic Horror Vampires? Now that's much more my speed!

I'm still playing loads of Field of Glory II, it is just so good! Really love the theme and the mechanics.

I'm also going to try to get into Fallout: New Vegas again this weekend. I played loads of Fallout 3 but have bounced off New Vegas multiple times sadly even though it is lauded as the better game.
The big thing for me is that I don't like being a killing machine (breaks my immersion) and that stupid 'rescue deputy numb nuts' quest in the second town seems impossible to do without massacring about 20 dudes!

Fallout 3 was cool because you could do most quests without killing anyone. (Rescuing Red from the police station and stealing Mirelurk eggs stand out as particular highlights!)

Maybe I need to see it as a cowboy film. Don my cowboy hat grab a six shooter and just enjoy it for what it is.

Finished Xenoblade Chronicles 2 the other day, loved it.
Trying Final Fantasy XII now. I gave up on FFX after about eight hours or so, I couldn't really get into it and the main character was just too much of an idiot for me to handle. The main character in FFXII is, sadly, also an idiot, but is a bit more tolerable.

What you will find with XII is that the "main character" isn't really the main character - more of an observer of the real heroes.
It's one of my most nostalgia-inducing games, having poured hours into it as a teenager. For me, the most enjoyable aspect was the monster-hunting quests and filling up the bestiary.

Started Rise and Fall, the new civ 6 expansion. After a disaster of a start with Georgia, started a game with Zulu. (I use a random number generator to pick civs haven't played). Ran over Sparta then expanded crazily.

Now in a war with theMapuche that they started. Road blocked by terrain at first, now my war machine is in full production and it's just getting silly, as the Zulu bonuses for civ 6 are horribly one dimensional and all conquest focused.so I guess I'm just going to start stomping people.

The dark/golden age system is fairly interesting, but lends itself to min/maxing, and city loyalty is honestly kind of annoying. It encourages tight clusters, which is something beyond the grasp of their AI. Though that seems slightly improved... My current opponent has a lot more ranged units and a willingness to actually use them. But didn't build walls, at all, so... Oh well.

Still playing through Blood and Wine, it's a fantastic piece of DLC so far. Up there with Trespasser (Inquisition) and Dawnguard (Skyrim) in that it offers something every bit as engaging as the game itself, while being unique enough to justify not being part of the base game. The worldspace is simply breathtaking, the new mechanics interesting and the overall tone and aesthetic excellent. I can't see myself committing to another full run through of The Wild Hunt any time soon, but I may well replay B&W in standalone form at some point down the line.

Also dabbling a bit in Fortnite BR, which I am predictably mediocre at. I managed a couple of top 10 finished though (8th is my highest placing, might have gone higher but I got greedy and broke cover to take some shots I really shouldn't have), which given that I've only played about 7 rounds and there are probably grandparents out there better at shooters than I am, I'm pleased enough with!

Blood & Wine gives you what is generally considered the best silver sword in the game (Aerondight). Because the sword basically levels up with you, you can take it all the way through a New Game+, if you ever get around to it.

Slowly doing the same, though it really depends on the weapons of the new operators whether or not it'll be worth if for me personally. Not sure who my pick will be, I usually run IQ or Frost, but both have not been selected for obvious reasons. Bit surprised that Fuze isn't part of Team Russian Genocide though, he'd be perfect for this sort of thing.

I'm miffed that it's a zombie scenario, was hoping for a coop event more grounded in the setting itself, involving the white masks, instead we've got what looks like the Killing Floor, but with corner peaking.

Yeah, I picked that up yesterday. Annoyingly, it came up only a few hours after I'd gone and got a full set of Grandmaster Witcher gear (swords included) so it meant giving up the bonus from that, but what can you do, eh? Shoot. How big is the titanium mod now?!? I thought it only added titans, but this looks like it adds even more than Untimate Apocalypse!

It adds a lot more than Titans... and everything is canon. No units created by the modders (like UA mod for example) only fluff.

Played a good three hours of R6 Siege Terrorist Hunt with my brother, who much to my surprise liked it a lot and was quite good at it to boot. So yay for the free weekend. Raked in a load of renown, more than enough to allow me to comfortably deck out both Finka and Lion when they're released next month.

Only downside is him picking IQ as his attacker of choice, bit annoying as she's my go-to attacker.

Hopefully he's up for some more rounds tomorrow, see if I can boost my renown some more before it's all over again.

Goodness gracious, I also just finished the whole of Witcher 3 for the third time. I REALLY have to keep it together to not start New Game+ immediately or else that game will end like Skyrim and I don't have any motivation to ever start it up again, so I absolutely feel you^^.
I am still just blown away by that amazing piece of work.
Well, time to get back to other games and be completely underwhelmed since every other game will feel rather dull compared to the Witcher 3^^

Total Warhammer as Empire.
First time playing it.

Some things I noticed
- the load times are really long
- The AI is much better
- The fact that you can only using generals to move armies around reminds me of Heroes of Might and Magic.
- Its a lot harder. I'm getting a lot more Phyrric victories than in the earlier games.

Also, it reminds me how much I miss WHFB. I greatly prefer the old lore to Sigmar's, and the Empire was a pretty cool faction.
My gripe with 40k is that too much of the focus was on super humans, and AoS fell into the same trap. WHFB was much more interesting in that the focus is on the Empire, who are just ordinary humans fighting against Impossible odds, which is a lot more compelling and impressive.
I mean, a monster beats a monster. So what? Those are even odds. It may have been cool to watch but nothing to write home about. A human beats a monster. That's amazing. That's worth writing about.

40k is a joke. It really is, I'm not being mean; its an ott comedy in the same vein as Judge Dredd. WHFB's story was a lot more serious, which is probably why its not as meme rich. Memes tend to originate from dumb nonsense.

The irony is that had GW not torched the setting and weren't so bloody stupid in handling it (Seriously, 100 for 5 blood knights? feth off GW, no wonder sales were poor), they could have profited from the sales that TW: WH may have generated, as much like I'm sure people got into 40k from DoW (I know I did), many would have gotten into WHFB from TW WH.
I blame Kirby. Stupid, greedy Kirby.

I agree wholeheartedly. I got into WHFB because of Tomb Kings. The sheer pathos of an entire empire, reduced to a mockery of the riches and life they knew before, fighting not for success, but out of rage at the fates that dealt them such a hand...

But you know how that ended up.

Nehekhara is coming to Total War:Warhammer, right? I think? Might have to get it to be able to witness the March of the Living Statuary again.

They're the only games I've bothered setting up a secondary Steam library up on my SSD for. I was at 4-5 minutes to load into a campaign and over a minute to load into a battle. I'm fairly patient but that was absurd. Now it's about 20 seconds to load into a campaign and about 5 to load into a battle.

Already came (to TW2). The constructs are rather well done. Very stompy, but utterly still (no idle animations) when they aren't moving or attacking.

If they hadn't blown up the old world I probably would have gotten Empire as my second army. My first army was Lizardmen, because Aztec dinosaurs are cool (I was 14 at the time, ok )
But now I have a greater foundness of how much the odds are stacked against them. Also the steam tanks are pretty nice and the Holy Roman Empire theme is pretty cool. I mean, they even copied how the Emperor comes into power; in WHFB the Emperor is chosen by the Elector counts and has the support of the Church of Sigmar; in the HRE the King of the Romans is chosen by the princes, who is then crowned Emperor by the pope.
That's another thing I miss about WHFB; it was basically our world, with a mix of our myths, legends and history. Pretty much every faction in WHFB has a clear, recognizable historical parallel, abeit with some stuff thrown in, whereas in 40k its more of an abstract concept.
For example, you can't really call the Imperium of Man the USSR or the Third Reich, because whilst it may have some of those elements it has a bunch of other aspects that stops one from applying that parallel, whereas the Empire is clearly the Holy Roman Empire from the 16th-17th century, but with some magic and steam tech.

Tomb Kings are a 18 euro DLC for Warhammer 2. I had a look at them.
They seem pretty cool. They have a special set of mechanics because they are undead, but they don't quite play the same as the Vampire Counts. I think they don't spread corruption or something. No bone giant though.
A pity about the price though. It seems that Sega are copying the Kirby era GW approach to pricing.

I was a bit on the fence originally about the new operators and Year 3, but after watching the gameplay and the Outbreak reveal...yeah. I went in for the pass.

Lion is going to be a solid pick for me, I think.

I may go with either, though probably Finka, her nano-bot ability is pretty good. As is right now I'm not a big fan of the limited event roster, so I'm hoping that either of the new operators clicks with me, otherwise it'll be one hell of a slog to play through.

I am quite surprised that both new operatives are attackers though, this will probably mean that one of the later operations will feature a pair of defenders to even things out again.

I actually thought the roster was a nice blend of attackers & defenders. Was surprised to see Lesion--hopefully he gets an event skin that has long trousers instead of tactical shorts.

I thought the 3 person team was a bit strange though. Would have figured 4 people, but I guess it's because we get to have Attackers and Defenders both?

I am quite surprised that both new operatives are attackers though, this will probably mean that one of the later operations will feature a pair of defenders to even things out again.

One of the developers during the live reveal showcasing their abilities yesterday said that Season 3(American & British) will most likely both be Defenders to balance things out.

The schedule so far:
Season 1(Chimera): Spetsnaz(Finka) and GIGN(Lion). Hereford is getting entirely reworked during Season 1 as well as the Outbreak event(March 6th to April 3rd).
Season 2(Unnamed): Italian Operators with an Italy map.
Season 3(Unnamed): American and British Operators with a reworked map. If Outbreak is a big hit, they want to bring it back again here with a different roster and map set.
Season 4(Unnamed): Moroccan Operators with a Morocco map.

Apparently the idea behind revisiting the Spetsnaz and GIGN with Outbreak/Operation Chimera was that they wanted to add a new Operator to each of the original factions that they feel has a bit too much of a 'must pick unless playing X game mode or Y map' thing. For Spetsnaz, playing Hostage automatically 'bans' Fuze from picks while Glaz gets 'banned' from picking on anything that is a bit too CQB oriented(read: 90% of the maps) and Twitch is a must have for basically any/every team.

In the same vein, they added 'softcounters' to the Defenders with some interesting bits. Finka, for example, has a downside with her nanobots in that it increases your breathing by 3x meaning that Smoke's grenades will kill you 3x faster and it increases your heartbeat by 3x meaning that Pulse can see you from further out. Echo and Lesion both can actually remove the effect with their abilities, as Echo's drone stun can 'knock out' the nanobots while Lesion's poison balances you out.

Lion's Drone has a 3 second warning before you get tagged in real time(it lasts 4 seconds) and Mute's Signal Disruptor allows for you to move with no repercussions. I'm really quite happy with these new Operators; they don't seem like they're going to become autotakes but man do they seem like they'll shake things up.

Lesion?

Here's the official list, unless he's been announced elsewhere:

The two new Operation Chimera Operators
Smoke
Ying
Buck
Kapkan
Ash
Doc
Tachanka
Glaz
And last but not least, our faithful Recruit!

Season 3 will have a Delta Force operator and a MDP(?) operative, another non-military operator.

And no need to explain the abilities, I have seen the trailers and the idiotic response from the community. Not that I'm worried, I refuse to play online.

MDP is "Ministry of Defence Police".
Wikipedia wrote:The Ministry of Defence Police (MDP) is a civilian police force which is part of the United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence. The MDP are not Military Police and should not be confused with the Royal Military Police or any other Service Police organisation. The MDP has 2,700 police officers, based at numerous defence locations across the United Kingdom.
Although superficially similar to other UK police forces, the MDP is significantly different in role, function and accountability. The MDP's primary responsibilities are to provide armed security and to counter terrorism, as well as uniformed policing and investigative services to Ministry of Defence property, personnel, and installations throughout the United Kingdom. MDP officers are attested as constables under the Ministry of Defence Police Act 1987. All MDP officers are trained to use firearms and 90% of those on duty are armed at any given time.

The force was originally formed in 1971 by the merger of three separate service constabularies: the Air Force Department Constabulary, the Army Department Constabulary, and the Admiralty Constabulary. The force, which consists of two divisions, is headquartered at MDP Wethersfield, Essex.

The force has a number of specialised departments and also provides officers for international policing secondments; including overseas and training of resident police forces in these areas. These overseas missions are carried out under the mandates of the United Nations, NATO, or the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

The MDP is currently undergoing significant restructuring as part of the coalition government's post 2010 austerity measures, and the Strategic Defence and Security Review. Its budget was cut from £360 million to £180 million and it is to lose 20% of its manpower and up to 50% of its stations by 2016.[1] The new, smaller force will concentrate on high end tasks such as nuclear weapons security and mobile armed policing of the defence estate.

Also yeah, I'd avoid playing online too if I could reliably gain Renown outside of it.

I am aware of who the MDP are, I am not sure whether or not they are the featured unit, but it wouldn't surprise me if it's them.

Play Terrorist Hunts with someone in coop, my renown gains went from 38 to 150 or the likes just because of that.

I've tried playing online, but this game is so unfriendly towards new players, during my only match they tried to kick me twice via vote. It didn't help that they were all mute (as in, not communicating) and the map we played on was plane. FML.

Gotcha. Yeah, I figure the idea is that they want to highlight two very different "methods" like they're doing with the Americans. Remember that outside of the SEALs, we've got the FBI as our Yankee operators.

I'm guessing that it's a Delta and MDP Operator since both do engage in HVT protection operations.

See, I do that on occasion but when we're talking Operators locked at 25k Renown...it doesn't really cut it

Wish they'd lock anyone with a Ranked rating out of Casual play.

Sadly ranked is being overhauled again I think, or they've not touched it since Operation Health and we're still stuck in the last dash before it's all reset again, so they're either working hard towards becoming plats again or hop onto casual and be edgelords there.

I bought all season passes, at discounts mind, as I couldn't see myself grinding for any of those. Which in hindsight is hilarious, as while I like some of the extra operators, I do find myself falling back onto IQ the most when playing as attacker and Bandit when defending.

I've found that most DLC operators (for the lack of a better term) are okay, but not massively so or worth it, not unless it really suits your playstyle or you must have that one. Some are even nerfed into oblivion by Ubisoft, like poor old Nerfbeard and his saran wrap shields.

If you want to play broken, take Ash (still no head hitbox) or Ela, who has been nerfed a few times now, but is still considered a hot button issue.

Yeah. My PC specs are enough to run it at Ultra, but load times are just horrendous. I looked around and the basic recommendation was they should be on an SSD to reduce the load times. If anything, they should be putting SSD in the recommended specs, but that will probably still scare enough people off that they don't want to do it.

Assload of hours in siege. The most likely reason you're being kicked/TK'd (assuming you're not playing free weekend with rando lvl 10s who do that for lulz) is you did something "stupid" or noobie. Common mistakes like putting up barricades in every door. Holding terrible angles in rooms. Reinforcing the wrong walls (like between bomb sites). Wandering far away from the obj/not playing the mission.

Yeah it's casual but banning ranked players is not the answer to butt hurt tryhards.

Continuing to play THunts as your primary experience with the game just reinforces bad habits while not teaching you how to play maps or how to contend with thinking breathing players. If you want to get better at the game, the simplest way is using your drone/cameras/sound to gather map knowledge. If you know where someone is, you can control how you engage and you heavily weigh that 1-2 sec engagement in your favor.

Hibana is superior to Thermite depending on the map she's more efficient at opening hatches, she doesn't have to expose herself and her 3 speed. Not to say Thermite is obsolete, he's better if you need to fully open a reinforced wall. Ying is also insane right now with Glaz when trying to control a room. But you need the rest of the team to breach for them so they can pull off their combo. Mira can fundamentally alter how your defense is setup and is the queen of the wall bang.

Blackbeard is still very good, they nerfed the shield health because that extra 1-2 hits is critical in higher level play while at lower skill levels it's less powerful since people are less accurate. He's also less reliable in casual since you can't predict obj placement. Defenders spawn in basement of Oregon, RIP BB. They spawn in dorms or meeting room? RIP defenders.

Ash suffers from the heavy trap meta they introduced. She can't just run and gun now with Kapkan rework, Lesion and Ela. Plus they nerfed her rifle a few patches back. They nerfing Ela's Scorpion to from 28->23 dmg and increasing recoil. Lion is also gonna hard counter the roaming meta when the new season drops.

20+hrs in MP on multiple characters(Mute and Thatcher being the two I gravitate towards, with Rook and Thermite being follow-up picks). I'm aware of how to play. Thanks.

And all you're really doing is reinforcing my point. You have the ability to use voice communication, so rather than saying "Hey don't do that!"...you're going to shoot someone? You're going to vote kick them?

It literally is...? Read the comments on Reddit and the like whenever a free weekend comes up. The tryhards talk about going "pubstomping" and other garbage.

I don't need to "get better" at the game, thanks. I've been playing it since launch.

I can say, without being hyperbolic, that the Rainbow Six community is one of the most toxic communities I've ever played with. And that includes Call of Duty's community.
I played maybe two Ranked matches early on, swore it off and stick strictly with Casual for when I need to get Renown up. I get the occasional kick/TK but if that happens--screw them, I have no issue with doing the same thing to them the next round.

Sorry, for me personally the most toxic community will always be the player base of the original Gears of War, which made me give up on multiplayer ever since. Racial slurs, salty personal messages, reports flung at you.. Oh lordy, I do not miss that at all and I've sat through several long years of playing Half-life mods before that.

But I'm happy with the game as is, it is obvious that the multiplayer component of R6 Siege is not for me. Siege in particular has unspoken rules and tricks for every map that people expect you know about, but don't tell you, other than the GIT GUD reply, which is super helpful.

I am quite content to be a useless goober who enjoys playing terrorist hunt and soon, operation Chimera.

Sounds like every multiplayer mode in any online game ever.
Its why I don't bother with multi. In real life you won't find many who will treat you like gak personally, but on the internet its like every single game will have at least 1 donkey-cave. And that's if you're lucky.

I also downloaded the new World of Tanks benchmark tool for their 1.0 HD update. The teams are still going to be trash but at least i will have something nice to look at while i die.

Still playing Eve because Eve. The 7 month war is winding down and things will go back to normal for the short term.

That's a shame. I have 170 hours on PC and enjoy the game immensely. Oh well to each their own.

Yeah, I get why people TK/kick and I get why it sucks for newbies. To take one of those unspoken rules. When somebody reinforces a notorious wall like Kid's Room in House it's basically akin to trying to throw the round. An experienced player knows what the likely outcome to that is, a new player won't learn until they're forced to retake Kid's through the chokepoint they created by reinforcing and get mowed down. But that experienced players don't like to sit through a round playing with a severe disadvantage just so somebody can learn or spend time explaining why it's bad with no guarantee the new player will stop. Thus TK/Kick becomes the most direct way of resolving the issue for certain players.

Siege is thoughtful and rewarding once you know what you're doing but that's what makes the learning curve so punishing. The real issue is matchmaking, but I'm not going to pretend to know how to fix that. At a minimum I always duo queue, that cuts down on any toxicity quite a bit.

Ugh every time I try to play Driven Assimilators (dat Cyborg bonus) I almost always end up in a war with a Spiritualist Fallen Empire before I'm ready. Not a fan of the FTL changes I heard coming down with 2.0 to default to Hyperlane starts, guess we'll see though.

I've actually been having the opposite problem on R6 it's the casual games that i seem to be team killed in, I got killed yesterday and called an 'adopted cow' for using someones character . They really need to do something to try and counter these sort of guys because they're really destroying the game.

Had a chance to try Outbreak on TTS, pretty fun so far.

They've also spoiled the elite skin for IQ. It's disappointing to say the least.

I suspect this is the difference between mine and y'all's game experience. I play on PC and never during 3-7pm which is peak children and I always roll with a premade party. Last time I was TK'd was over a month ago by an irate Mira because someone put up a reinforcement in the wrong direction when he asked them not to.

It feels so out of place with the rest of the skins, which have a nice vintage look and feel to them. Okay, this one screams 80's vintage, but still.. out of place.

Well, not that Ash's elite skin is fitting in either, which is so far IIRC the only modern elite skin.

Valkyrie is also getting a Nam themed elite skin, War Photographer, probably based on Dennis Hopper's character.

It's not the platform that makes the difference, as I've watched streamers for all 3 platforms and seen all of them have issues with this kind of garbage.
I generally play from 9am to 2pm EST; y'know...when the kids are at school here in the US...so it's not the times.
I do run solo, but that's because nobody I know and play R6 Terrorist Hunt with wants to deal with the dumpsterfire that is the community in MP.

The common thread in all cases is that it ebbs and flows based on when there are free weekends or banwaves from Ranked.

I'm currently play Doom VFR. Pretty great game, but it's taken me awhile to get used to the controls in VR. I played my first session for about an hour before getting sick. I'm going to have to make sure I take breaks every 30 or so minutes with this game, but otherwise, it's been pretty fun.

Played more Outbreak on TTS, quite fun. I've only been playing Ash so far, about the only operator I'm confident with, letting others pick the newer operators, who mesh together quite well, if people remember to use their gadgets. Not that Ash's gadget is super useful in this setting, Zofia would've been a better match for this, what with her being one of the operators who also gets hazmat gear, along with Hibana.

Best game though was with Kapkan and the Lord himself as my buddies, making the defense scenarios that pop up at certain point all the more fun, especially because these two knew how to dig in and rock.

Bonus point to them for also bringing a silenced sidearm (silenced SASG for Kapkan) for the early parts of the map, where stealth kills are preferably if you want to keep the hordes away for a while longer.

The new Stellaris update... I like it. I like it a lot. Even without the DLC, the 2.0 changes at first glance bring some massive improvements; the pacing is better, the warfare is far more dynamic rather than just being a slugging match with some borders changing round at the end, having access to all the basic tier weapons, shields and armour at the start is very nice and the starbase system adds a whole other layer to proceedings. So far, so good!

That is good to hear! i'm just trying it out right this moment, lots more choices at the start of the game it seems. It's a minor thing, but i like that they added an option to start out on a tomb world.

Well that's just horrible programming then. If they are going to design the game in such a way that it takes ages to load on a type of disk most people have, they should have the decency to put SSD under recommended requirements.

Yeah. My PC specs are enough to run it at Ultra, but load times are just horrendous. I looked around and the basic recommendation was they should be on an SSD to reduce the load times. If anything, they should be putting SSD in the recommended specs, but that will probably still scare enough people off that they don't want to do it.

SSDs aren't that expensive anymore. They're at a price point that anyone who uses his PC for more than just Office and checking their Facebook (so everyone who still uses desktops for the extra power they offer over laptops really) would be crazy not to get one. It just makes the computer so much snappier. No more minutes of waiting before you can actually use windows after booting, shorter loading times in games, etc.

They're not expensive, but I don't think they're that common. The load time sare so horrendous that playing TW Warhammer without one is a pretty bad end user experience. That they're not putting them in the recommended specs tells me that the gathered system data from Steam is telling them while they're not expensive, they're still not common. So I'd guess they're waiting for SSDs to get more common before putting them in them recommended specs. TW games are just going to get slower and slower loading times as they get bigger and more detailed, so putting SSD in there will happen. Not to mention size - TW games are big, like 40gb+ big. SSDs aren't yet all that big, and while average SSDs will fit a TW game, they will consume a large portion of it. Both TW Warhammers together for Mortal Empires is 70gb (that's if you also want TW Warhammer 1 installed to play its campaign too). A 256gb SSD will lose about 40% of it's space to the games.

Most likely just a matter of timing in regards to sales.

So beat the empire campaign. Trying VC counts now, because their mechanics looked interesting.

I'm really liking how CA tried to make each faction feel unique by giving them each a different set of mechanics in an attempt to mimic the table top game. That's a nice touch.

However, playing VC makes it apparent how broken the auto resolve system is. I could completely outnumber the enemy and be close to victory on the battlescape, but autoresolve will tell me I have a 0% chance of victory.
Apparently this is because ranged and artillery units are heavily favored in autoresolve because its assumed that they will use all of their ammunition and the other side will just sit there and take it, and also zombies count negatively towards your own score. VC do not have ranged units (which is pretty faithful), but they do have zombies.
Of course, this means you can trick the AI into suiciding into your superior force, as the AI uses the auto resolve check to determine matchups.
It also means you will always be fighting the battles personally, as you can't rely on auto resolve. So gone is the strategy of getting two doom stacks and auto-winning the game, which is how I won the last one. Seriously, two Empire stacks with Franz and loaded up with halberds, reknowns artillery, cav and greatswords vs Archaon and Lord Change = easy win. On normal that is.

Also, VC buildings are bloody expensive. I guess its to balance the fact that their units are so cheap and easy to recruit. Technically you don't need military buildings as you can just use famous battle sites, but I like to have them to access hero units and raised dead cost more dark magic than just recruiting them, unless you have a general specced for that.

Pretty great visuals, decent voice acting, suitably cartoonishly evil big bad guy. I can see myself putting a lot of miles in Harran.

Been playing Dynasty Warriors 9. As you may have heard, it's Open World this time around.

On the one hand, I miss the old scenario maps. On the other, it's kind of nice to look at the big map of ancient China, and see where all the action is focused for the current missions in comparison to where the previous missions took place. If you're curious where Luoyang and Chibi are in relation to each other, you can check the map. And you can ride from one to the other. It helps put things in perspective as the action shifts from one part of China to another.

On the downside, most of the criticisms are fairly accurate. You're given a grappling hook, which is kind of nice. The problem is that it allows you to bypass just about *everything*. And it's quick. Watchtowers have a ladder that you're supposed to climb to reach the top. Or you can walk up to the tower and use your grappling hook, which will get you to the top faster than the ladder. City sieges usually (though not always) have a siege tower and a battering ram that allow you to get past the locked gates and into the city. Or you can walk up to the wall and use your grappling hook. And so on (it should be noted that sometimes the tower and/or ram aren't part of the assault, and you're forced to use the grappling hook to finish the mission; there doesn't seem to be any particular rhyme or reason as to why they're in some assaults, and not others). Also, the lack of mission maps means that in most fights, you can bypass the blocks of enemy troops (and sometimes there can be a lot of them) and make a bee-line for the mission's target officer(s). Defeat them, and the enemy troops run away.

On the positive side, the Open World introduces a concept called the "Front Line". The map is filled with cities, villages, encampments, and bases. All of them belong to one side or the other (or a third side - bandits). Defeat enough enemy troops and officers, and the location becomes controlled by your side. But you can't just run up to any old location. The location has to be along the "Front Line" (identified on the map by all of the crossed swords symbols). There the spots in between the two sides, and those are the only locations with troops. Locations back behind the Front Lines don't have troops occupying them, which means that there's no one to defeat, which means that you can't take control of it. Cities, villages, and encampments are the primary locations to contest over. But there are usually a few small bases located on the road between each of those (with anywhere from between one to four squads of troops). Taking a location on the Front Line pushes the Front Line back to the next location along the road or roads connected to that location. So with some patience, you can quite literally take over all of China.

Also note that the whole thing is dynamic even without player interference. It is possible for NPCs to move the Front Line as well. They're not as good at it as the player is. But they can do it. Areas behind the Front Line will send squads up to support the Front Line conflict spots. Additionally, roving squads with minor named officers will pick spots to assist with. With a little bit of luck, one side or the other will win the battle in a Front Line location, and cause the Front Line to shift.

All in all, it's a pretty cool system.

Also, the Front Line system plays into making things a bit easier for you. Each Chapter section has one overarching mission that needs to be completed to advance the storyline. Each Chapter Section also has a series of side missions. Completing the side missions will make the final mission of the section a little easier by reducing the level of the enemy troops and officers there (additionally, they'll clue you in to important things going on that might be a bit in the background compared to the main focus). Further, capturing the important base locations adjacent to the where a mission takes place will also reduce the levels of the troops and officers by a small amount. So understanding the system can help you out if you're having trouble.

At the start of the game, you can only play as the leader of one of the three factions - Cao Cao, Sun Jian, or Liu Bei. Additional characters are unlocked by playing through the game's chapters (characters in the same faction as your current character are unlocked at the end of the chapter sections they first appear in; characters in the other factions are unlocked at the end of the full chapters). If you want to play Wei, but want to play as, say, Xiahou Doun instead of Cao Cao, then you can switch to him after the first fifteen or so minutes (about how long it takes you to unlock him and another Wei character). Unfortunately, chapters within a particular faction tend to play identically regardless of which specific character you're playing. Initially, you can only play new characters in the chapter that they're first available in. But after you've reached a new chapter while playing a specific character, you can always go back and play that chapter with that character. When a character leaves the story (usually because they died), a short video epilogue is played, and you're unable to use that character to play through any further new chapters (you can use "completed" characters in what's called "Free Mode" in any unlocked chapters including ones they don't normally appear in, though events don't play in that mode)

I've finished Cao Cao's storyline, and am currently working to finish the rest of the chapters as Sima Yi. Once I finish the whole thing, I'll go back and play the Wu and Shu storylines. Additionally, there are a several unaligned characters (Dong Zhou, Lu Bu, the leader of the Yellow Turbans, and some others) that have their own stories.

I'm playing on the PS4. I've heard complaints about low frame rates, though if that's an issue I haven't really noticed it. I've heard that the PC release is pretty bad, though.

Huh. Open-world Dynasty Warriors. That's interesting.

Are there, like, day/night cycles, where there's more or less activity? Is there an economy system, or markets or whatever to do when you're not actively fighting?

Also, when do you think they're finally going to make an Arthurian Warriors game?

What are you playing right now? @ 2018/02/27 04:59:25

Haven't heard anything about Arthurian, but they did make a Hundred Years War game - Bladestorm.

These days, though, aside from the required Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors repeats (and the mash-ups like Warriors Orochi and Warriors All-Stars), they do licensed stuff. Gundam (though it's been a while since the last one), Berserk, Legend of Zelda, Attack on Titan (haven't played it, but apparently it's a bit unusual for a musou game given that you're going after powerful titans instead of hordes of random mooks), among many others.

There is a day/night cycle in DW9, though I'm not sure if it has any effect on the game aside from changing the amount of light. There are civilians in the cities and towns. But they don't move. You can talk to a few of them in each city (helpfully identified on the mini-map) to get a sense of the mood in China during that particular chapter.

The civilians disappear when there's fighting at their location, and only come out after the fighting is over.

Is it normal for the Von Carstein AI to do absolutely nothing? It doesn't take territories, it doesn't expand, all it does it sit in West Sylvania with like 2 vargheists and bats.
I eventually got tired of dealing with such dead weight (heh) and confederated them so I can give West Sylvania commandments and get access to a legendary lord.

Yes this is quite common, the other scenario is that they simply steamroll everything and everyone and spread like a horde of unwanted relatives come Christmas. But that has for the most happend to me when I have played as Clan Mors or the Last Defenders

It's not a brawler though, at least not a Street Fighter game.

It's a third person fighter, but with elements of a side-scroller, top-down bullet hell and RPG mechanics thrown in on top of it.

Street Fighter is a Fighting Game. A Brawler is like Bayonetta, or in a lot of ways the Dynasty Warriors series. Brawlers are PvE, and focused on lots of combos and action. Like, the old Ninja Gaiden games were Brawlers, as is Shiv. They're very often side-scrollers.

As a result...

I have lots of money

(still struggle with managing happiness though)

My favourite game of Civ was one where I ended up in a cold war, of sorts, with Greece. That is until I launched a mass nuclear strike against them using my nuclear submarines hiding throughout the oceans and under the icecaps (it helps when you control all the sources of Uranium). The resulting population loss and fallout affecting their major cities and surrounding tiles tanked their economy, making them easy pickings after a few turns letting them hemorrhage money.

Second place goes to a game of Civ 2 where I encountered a civilization still using spears when I had modern firearms. That was the game where my civilization was a communist totalitarian regime with all the cities under martial law.

I'm playing Civ VI right now myself. First time playing since Civ 4.

I went for the difficulty that's one less than the standard difficulty, because I've got no idea how, well, anything works...

I'm kinda near the end of my 10 person game now and it looks like the only one that's really ended up being particularly strong is Trajan, who is apparently 50% of the way to a science victory, with me, Saladin and him being the last ones left in the 'information' era.

I'm kinda curious about the science one, is it entirely possible say, that Trajan could just end up jumping forward on all the projects and like, finishing in a couple of turns?

Sea of Thieves beta at the moment. At least until this stress test is over in the morning. Got a full crew running a Galleon, plundering poor fools. It is a ton of fun. I highly suggest it.

I'm curious about Nier as well. It looks neat, but brawlers are definitely not what I usually play.

Nier is a lot of different game types. It goes from God of War Combo Brawler to side scrolling beat em up to flying bullet hell game to open world adventure all within about 5 minutes of play. It happens very regularly in this game. The changes of perspective and how seamless they are really makes the game interesting and keeps you on your toes. I highly recommend it. The story is very good but be warned, you have to beat it 3 times to get the full story because of the different characters and their endings. Those are just the main endings. You can get far more in the game. Some silly and others really interesting.

It is an amazing game that deserves all of the praise it gets.

I finished that Civ 6 game. Turns out I was on Warlord difficulty.

I've got to say, overall, yeah, it was kinda boring. I mean, I played hours and hours of it over the week, but still yeah, kinda boring.

Decided to pick up NieR: Automata.

Now, if you were to ask me to describe the game, I'd have to say.. it's an experience..?

Fun game so far, but so.. different from what I usually play.

Come for the booty, stay for the engaging story and the tears and the cries of "how can a game about machines be so human!"

Playing Hunt: Showdown.

FPS Battle Royale type game, with zombies of various size, toughness and abilities, bounties for boss creatures(which is the main objective of the game), set in vaguely Western/Bayou locales. A little rough around the edges, as its still in Early Access but still fun. It has everything that I wanted PUBG to have, such as choices of equipment loadouts to start the game, experience/skills for your Bounty Hunter, and much more interesting level design. Even when I get killed early into a match, its still pretty rewarding if you had killed a decent number of zombies or other bounty hunters, as you get money and xp for those to spend on actual items to use, instead of just a vest or new socks, etc.

Battle Royale type games seem like they are a dime a dozen and are to 2017/2018 what Open World sandbox games were to the previous years, imo. Most of them are pretty questionable quality, or just tacked onto another game, but this game was built from the ground up to be a solid and uniquely atmospheric contender in its respective genre.

If you're into these types of games, I recommend this one, but would advise waiting until general release.
