see I disagree as the vampire fits a lot of the early representations of them. They weren't always portrayed as robert patterson you know. As far as Iceswords stuff cheers to him on this, but when is he actually going to start selling all of that stuff?

If I'm not mistaken Ed will release a batch of new stuff in early Januari, this includes some of Icesword's stuff. Things aren't going as fast as wanted because Ed is also providing casting services for several other companies.

as for the techno guys im not a fan of the oversized mail or the wellington boots .

The Techno Communion people could need one miniature with a different pose to make the group less monopose.
Also planned for January release are a bunch of Mongoblins and hopefully the big transport bug by Cyclonus (this one waiting for a year for its release, but then again it is really big )

Small message from Ed:
Ok, new molds done for spinning today and very, very close to being converted over to all metals. I need to finish Rozmax's little troll guys, which I forgot about :-[ and they will go in the next 2 spin molds for metal but next is master casting and back to casting for TFM which finishing up for Ice, JT, and other paid work! ;D
Jan.-feb. we are looking at for metal releases:
1 the pirates and gang girl
2 the dwarf of Rozmax converted, Bob Olley, the sage, and the halfling of Vermis
3 mongolian goblins galore, like 6 more new ones I think
4 Builds lizard man NEW and dwarf along with 2 additions from Andrew May, a friend of mine.
Also should have stuff off to Ice and JT by then for their own releases. 8-)
Next in line is my own personal series which begins with:
1) 2 humans with alterations to create 4 human soldiers
2) 2 elf warriors to convert to 3 options
3) undead galore. Vamp, ghoul, ghast, skeletons, and probably zombies or even the flesh golems.
Gonna be busy everyone.

Some Redemption Sector stuff:
Think I've finally settled on the Black Praetorians: had trouble with the basic coat collar and wanted something to differentiate them from the Redcoats so I've gone with an exaggerated collar piece and cuffs. Stuck buttons on after these pics were taken.
Still WIP, refinements and details in progress.
Started work on some Cultists, this is the test sculpt. Hood has been added after pic was taken. Doing 5 guys like this, 2 guards with pikes, a cult leader and then some clowners and perhaps a sacrificial victim. Intending them for the Vampire cults started by the clowners but they'll be generic enough to be used for any cult (Cthulhu, Chaos, Genestealer, etc.)
For Ed's peace of mind, strengthened and re did the bases on all the Techno guys to make sure they survive the molding process
Finished up this thing as well.

I guess how long will take to GW to sue 'em for ip infringement... Hope not too early since these trenchers are wonderful and I want'em!!!!
9394
Post by: Malika2
I doubt GW would sue Troll Forged Miniatures since all the miniatures produced do not break any GW IP. Not only are the designs original ones rather than GW ones, the names and background also don't break GW's IP. However, this does not mean that GW hasn't been an inspiration for it, but there is a difference between creating stuff that is influenced by GW than stuff that is a GW product but made by another company as we've seen with the work of others...

The striations on those 3D printed models come from the printing resolution used by the printer. These actually aren't that bad, its just the downside of the method. You should be able to remove them just by gently smooting them down with fine sand paper, an exacto, and a file. It can be tedious, but it will spare the need to start over.
If it didn't clash with the particular aesthetic of these models... well it would be interesting to see someone design something that just takes the striations into consideration to give a model "texture."

So when are we going to see those redemption sector minis finally released? IceSword keeps showing us all these great looking minis that I would love to buy, but rather than being released... he starts yet another range of minis that I would love to buy... not a very good way to get my money, IMO.
Also, the Graven robots look to me like they weren't properly post-processed by you. When working with 3d prints, you have to sand/polish the prints, as the printing process results in 'stairstepping' which appears as the texture shown here. The alternative is to use a better printer/material, it costs more but the output is much better and requires considerably less post-processing.

I know this is a bit off topic but texturing specific surfaces is probably one of those things GW could really do with some of there plastic kits but don't. Things like chaos vehicles would really get alot out of a texture on there armor... the FW nurgle stuff is the closest, but there are other texture applications as well.

Casting has been an issue with regards to scheduling. Not ideal but I'm working on it to ensure as soon as I pull the trigger and open the webstore I have a sufficiently solid infrastructure behind me.
On the plus side whilst the initial live date has been delayed this puts me ahead of my sculpting schedule which in turn creates a healthy release schedule.
Miniatures of the North is a separate entity from Troll Forged.

No fixing them, not with that particular 3d printing technology anyways... It's additive, it works by applying layer upon layer of quick-setting powders like perfectly cut sheets of paper one on top of the other. Unfortunately, the powdery nature of the construction is really apparant when it sets, as it has a texture somewhat like a whetstone or a sanding block. No good for mini'ing. Believe me, I've thought about it, one of my client's has a machine like that!
The best way to get minis out of 3d printers is the subtractive process, start with a block of wax, let a computer controlled laser cut it away, then use the wax to make a mold. This method is commonly used by jewelery makers.

I'm sorry but this is entirely wrong. While the subtractive method gives you a finer finish off the bat, you can use the additive process to good effect with some gentle sanding w/ a ultrafine grit paper or steel wool.

Ya, but that kinda precludes the point of 3d printing a bit no?
A: You make a pretty unlikely assumption that you would be able to sand all the nooks and cranies of a miniature, which is pretty darn tough at the best of times.
B: That 3D printed items this thin and small are brittle as heck
Like I said, I have actual real experience with these and discussions with professional users of the technology. There is a reason you don't see mini companies going this route.
However, as you point out, there are ways to salvage them (however prohibitively time-consuming) and I can see where my previous post could have sounded as if I was talking in absolutes. I have experience but I wouldn't bet my life on my expertise let's put it that way lol!
If I am wrong about it or my info is outdated, I would actually be pretty happy about it as it would be a great tool for everyone to have at their disposal, both big and small companies and individuals alike!

MajorTom11, I think you need to research 3d printing a bit more. 3d printing materials are available in any combination of detailed, strong, flexible, metal, etc. The more detailed and strong, generally the more expensive the material.
There is a black, white, and clear detailed material available from Shapeways, a 3d printing service. It is very high quality.
7075

Shapeways? High quality? Hardly. Shapeways is passable, average at best, there are other companies out there capable of doing far more detail.

I know there is more than one, I am just speaking specifically on the powder printers, which are the only ones I have direct experience with. Who knows, maybe their printer is just balls and there are better even in powders! (although they insist it is one of the higher quality ones... they make prototypes for industrial machining on it)
Didn't mean to start a black and white argument boys, just wanted to mention my opinion that the work involved in saving those particular gritty prints, and the chance sanding alone would be sufficient was pretty low, just IMO.

Update from Ed:
Almost done, little bits needed and cutting and molding begins. The teen is 60mm btw, big nasty trolls but fit well on 40mm bases. Could also be nice hill giants, thus the reason I scaled them up slightly. Might fit a couple of niches.

Update from Icesword:
The casts are in!!
To recap, I got someone in the UK to mold these up, I ordered 20 of them (5 spins of the mold) to test them out and for personal use, and on Monday I'll be getting the mold shipped out to Ed to sell these through TFM.
I really like these... I remember a lot of people didn't. Put my money where my mouth was and here they are.
Taken various photos for use in the TFM webstore or for advertising.
What Ed is going to get when he spins the mold:
What I suggest Ed sells in the store. If you order 5 spins of the mold you get 20 minis and 5 accessory sprues (allowing you to make 5 troops with the thigh armour and different heads: heads with the face plates removed or with the gas mask face. There's also a spare helmet hollowed out and a spare rifle.)
Here's the dolly/armature. I'm still not decided on what to do with this, I guess I'll leave it to Ed. Lets just put it on sale? Only allow it to be used in a casting via TFM. No freebies for people. Lets make it part of a group effort/sculpting challenge.

The new musclebeast does certainly bear a strong resemblance to the early vampire sculpting, but I'm sure the big differentiation is going to come through the details. I'm guessing some sort of werewolf maybe?
The alien adventurer is pretty cool. The pilot is looking really good, and I'm already pretty interested in getting one when they're available. Because the rest of it's so good though, I feel the need to mention that I think the feet/boots area could use a bit more work. Sorry if I sounded a bit harsh there, it was late and I had a long day of reviewing papers whilst being half hung over.
Thing is that TFM is a small company and Ed also does other commission stuff and other jobs on the side to be able to keep doing this for the sculptors but also to sustain himself, which is the reason why some of the miniatures take so long to be released. He prioritizes some stuff (including his own miniatures) because he knows they will bring in enough revenue to keep on going.

I have been messing about with the Org concepts some more. I came up with one I liked in a doodle while on the telephone. Funny how inspiration strikes when you are not really trying! I scanned the scrap of paper into Photoshop and worked it up. The Orgs are the Sciror version of Orcs, but I wanted them to be even meaner looking (if that’s possible), a mix between 40K’s Orks, rage zombies (from 28 days), and a dash of crocodile. Notable differences are the lack of lips (I may play up the shark teeth angle a bit more in later versions), the skeletal nose, and rounded ears.
Hive Trygon has been busy working on some busts for Philip's design that will probably be released as well.

Fabulous sculpts, all of them. I definitely need to find a place where I could buy your stuff in my country. Those Elves are nice... and maybe it's just me, but their helmets have something in common with "Alien".

Post by: Malika2
@Sheep: I know, Ed is currently experimenting with the Org design a bit, which will be done through busts. Once he completed those he will give it a shot at making some Org miniatures.
@Marcin Ciszewicz: You could buy the miniatures from the online store.

I like the org concept art quit a bit better than the bust so far. The bust has really completely deviated to the point they are unrelated for me, head shape, proportion and details are not accurate at all...
Does it mean the bust is bad? Not at all, without comparison or expectations derived from the art, it pretty cool in and of itself.
That being said, I think that drawing really deserves an accurate sculpt of it's own, without tinkering.
9394
Post by: Malika2
Don't worry about that, but do note that stuff is still in the concept stages. Ed will probably be doing several other busts before doing the miniatures. Also note that the Org are very "changable" as a species, meaning that many different versions of them could exist.
Flokr has also been working on some concepts for the Org, based on Philip's artwork:
Our discussion on the Org can be found here.

I'm told there are virtually no sales of my sculpts so cavalry and heavy weapons teams probably won't happen. I'm focused purely on Miniatures of the North for the time being but might get back to heroic scale in the future for Troll Forged.

They actually look very good. The coats look exactly like my guard army's coats which means they have a decent chance of making it into my army.
Much more high quality than your previous sci-fi troopers in my opinion.
If you sold the legs separately I reckon you would sell a TON for IG players. Maybe like $15 per 10 legs set?

I hate to be the negative nancy in a 3-rd party product thread, but I really don't see any point in buying these over WF's plastics. The body detail is about the same but the cardboard guns make them look like bad IG cosplayers.
I think you would be better off just selling the legs as ph34a said.

As someone who is usually the negative nancy in 3rd party model threads, I can say that these are pretty good as things go. WGF's models are really really bad. The detail is blobby, the coats have nonsensical physics, and their guns look really dumb. I will definitely give you the fact that the guns on these models are totally bland and detail-less. But slap on a lasgun, which I assume most people will want to do, and it becomes very good.

Re: separate legs in greatcoats, is this really the case?
I could make 5 in about as many hours but I often think that's an expensive army: a box of cadians and then some TFM legs?
It's a tricky call to make, I guess it's the lasguns that polish off a greatcoat mini and make it look 40k?
If some of these Chemotroopers get sold then I'd be keen to expand the range, already working on an upgrade sprue consisting of a backpack, new head and beefed up gun.
Keen for input and suggestions on my 28mm heroic sculpts, happy to field ideas over at TFM forum.

Definitely be ordering some Chem troopers as soon as I'm sorted on a new location, but personally I'd say don't worry about the guns, as most people will be swapping them for 40K ones...it's those that tie them into the setting in my view so just make the hands capable of taking IG weapons.

I can't speak for the entirety of 40k IG players but I have always been under the impression that greatcoats have always been in demand from IG players. A set of coats only that meshed well with Cadian torsos would be a profitable kit in my opinion. I would definitely buy some, making my own is a pain in the ass as my molds degrade. It really makes the prospect of adding 20-30 troops to my army too much effort to deal with.

At the moment it will be just this, I think you can already create interesting regiments with this, just switch around a bit, maybe some more "extensive conversion work could also do the trick. As for the scifi weapons, I doubt we will see that, however..that doesn't mean you can't convert them yourselves.

I like the basic premise of the assassin, but the pose is kinda odd to me. What is he doing, going into karate pose, when he has both a pistol and a sword in hand? I am not sure where the assassin is supposed be going here but I do like the basic design of him, with the skin-tight bodysuit and all.

Big news from Ed:
Got it today. Each mold will be a work of art like metal but so much faster than resin casting and stronger. I still need to fine tune the process a bit but most of our line is going to be converted to this where I can spin 12 or 16 figures at a time.
Here is a shot of the new plastic. I have to dye it yet when I mix the big production batches but I have pushed it far as possible. The only thing I can't get to work is the glue ability. It glues with super glue like resin but it will not melt with the other glue. I tried it and had that ability but the sacrifice was hard paint would scar it and it would bent easy with heat.
This stuff is hard and very, very good stuff. A huge accomplishment for us and I'm so, so happy it's finally done. Anyway for all of you waiting to see a picture.
One thing. I'm a bit slower atm with working out the bugs on this on placing orders and working to convert over to this product for a price drop on quite a few of the best and better sellers along with making some box type sets and such for the store. I'll be hard to get for a bit so please forgive me if slow.

Troll Forged goes Finecast LOL
Hope the miscast double axe is no sign for the future quality.
Edit. Ed says: No bubbles, harder and more heat resistant than resin. We will see.

From what I know of TFM, Ed will not market a sub par cast quality. So we won't have our hands on those until they are at least as good as the current resin and metal casts.

Having ordered from them before I'm sure they'll deliver many more quality product.

Are you guys going to convert the Alien Brains to the new plastic? I was going to order a couple more, but if there is a price drop, I think I will anxiously await that..

We got a big discussion going on about the pricing of the new plastic goods and yes it is once again going a bit slower with the new releases. However, Ed is working on getting the plastic fixed...
In the meanwhile!
Mati's Dwarf Miner is out! The resin model can be ordered here for $5.
Icesword has two new cyborgs out! Order them here for $3 per figure.

Wow, that assassin robot looks epic! Although I prefer the one without his face showing, because it looks more robotic.

That thing is gorgeous, the one with the face on show particularily looks a lot like some kind of evil cyborg
Though I'm still waiting for some more of Kyte's Fishmen, in particular the Warturtle

A small message from Bocks:
Hey hey. I know Ed's real bizzay but I thought I should stick to protocol and post these pictures here. Finished Alien Behemoth:
Left
Front
Right (focussed on the crotch by accident but it's one of my favourite bits of the model so it's good to see anyway )
Rear right
Rear left
Ultra macro of the head
Hope you like!

At the moment Ed's main priority is to get the plastic up and ready. Since he also has a dayjob during the week, he can only do this during the weekends and any other moment of spare time he might have. More on that over here.

That's an impressively clean sculpt.
I hope the head is removable; it's make a really good basis for a Tyranid Prime.

The videos of his plastic on this page are amazing!!

I am really looking forward to supporting you guys a bit more... if you can sell "box sets" of models, that is the road to my wallet and so many other gamers... as what I need are units that will look cohesive, not just one-off models.
Keep goin', Ed! The finish line must be in sight . I have to imagine (and it seems so from reading the thread) that this method will be more profitable and hopefully faster, too...

I'm still waiting for an admin to confirm my registration on the Troll Forged forums. It was only last night... but I wonder if it'd be possible to get rid of that step.
For a small(ish) company, people might not come back to post on the forums after waiting to be registered.
Just a thought (I was/am just planning to post how awesome those videos are, and how I look forward to buying plastic from you guys )

Hi, um question for the TFM team. I'm just wondering quite how big your Griffin, Dragon and Nightmare sets actually are, as I plan to put them on Warhammer bases for my armies, and want to know which to get, be it cavalry, screaming bell, arachnarok etc
(Currently saving up to buy some of every thing in the Fishmen range plus some)

@MajorTom11: Thanks man!
@RiTides: I'm sorry it took a while. Normally I'm on it rather quickly, but offline life has kept me rather busy at the moment. The reason we do this is mostly to prevent spammers/bots etc from popping up. I've seen on other forums that it has been somewhat problematic with spam from time to time. We would like to prevent that from the start.
@Murdock129: They're monster size, I'll try to look for more info on it (remind me if I forget!), but I think they're about the side of GW dragon models and such.

These are the resin masters which will be placed in the spin caster for plastic production. According to Ed the plastic models should be ready by March, with a possible release in April.
I can guarantee anything at the moment, things are going quite slow. Economic recession, Ed having a second child on its way and him also having had an accident which seriously messed up his hand for several months really put a strain on the project.
Hopefully 2012 will see the rise of TFM!
@Absolutionis: As far as I can tell the models won't be multipart. However, since the plastic is easily cuttable I don't think you'd have that much of a problem converting these models!

Really glad Ed is mending!! If he would share his secret process, it seems that Heresy Miniatures is really eager to know how to do it...
TFM stuff in plastic would be awesome... can't wait to see it!
@Kroothawk- that thing looks like a bear to cast so that could be part of it, too.

lol always someone who does nothing but sits on thier ass all day gotta complain about something. lol. First off the guns on those guys look fine IMO. Given that they are about the size of a toothpick I'd say not bad! The units themselves are sculpted nicely. They just look a hella lot like Vostroyan guys but whatever.
The deamon near the bottom is tooo sickkk! Very very awesome! As for the horns being to long, like cmon really? Really? How nitpicky are people gonna be? Like what, you want them 1 or 2 mm shorter? Is 2 or 3 mm just too long you had to complain about it? Cmon really?
Thats all I gotta say!
*******EDIT************
Oh crap didn't realize this thread was over 50 pages long. lol. I only read through the 1st page. So this post is meant for the guys on pg 1! lol
