Hi all,
The first army I started playing 40k with were Space Wolves. As a way to taunt me one of my buddies started calling them "The sons of pus" (he named his army the Sin Eaters, so you can imagine what I called them). So after awhile I decided it was time to start a Chaos army.
I needed a break from power armor armies and painted a Tau than Eldar army, so after about four years I broke out the Chaos stuff and started the real "Sons of Pus".
I put a list together based on what if some members of the thirteenth great company succumbed to the lure of Papa Nurgle. I started with the lone surving Long Fang, who contracted the Obliterator virus.
the only thing left is to add a water effect. I am currently testing different methods to achieve a murky, slightly green, slime like effect that will just cover the skulls on the base while hopefully still being able to see them.
any comments, ideas, critiques are encouraged.
thanks and take care

This is really cool, love the model, love the concept.
For the slime effect you might try chestnut ink, thrakka green wash and varnish in eqaul parts, then heavily water this mix,it creates a nice glossy slime.
Can't wait to see more.

thanks for the remarks.
here is the next unit (seven models) to be painted. They were originally plaguebearers, but after the release of codex chaos space yawn they have been downgraded to lesser summoned demons.
I gave them wolfish heads and axes (like proper space wolves should).

This would be a really cool model If you can build it,you could also use WHFB Direwolves for rotting Fenris wolves.
I really like the whole "Nurglized" Space wolves Idea your going with, keep the pics coming.

1. love your avatar. it's right up there with "bummer of a birthmark, Hal"
2. with regrets to Fitzz and Obsurum there are no current plans to include a Great Unclean One. However, my demon prince is being built around the nightbringer model and I found an appropriate "zombie-wolfy" head to go with it.
3. the current version of the army list looks like:
HQ -- demon prince
elite -- chosen (7 models)
trp -- plague marine (x9) w/rhino
trp -- plague marine(x8) w/ rhino
trp -- csm (x16) with icon of khorne (represents Blood claws)
lesser summoned demon (x7) plaguebearers
HS -- land raider, this may become a transport for the chosen
HS -- obliterator
4. some units were built a few years ago and need to be upgraded.
5. goal is to finish in time for GT Baltimore 2009

hi all,
an update on the plaguebearers. the squad is finished except for the water effect on the base.
each picture has a listing of colors (from base to highlight).
just a note on acronyms;
GWF = games workshop foundation
GWW = games workshop wash
VGC = vallejo game color
At the end are a couple pics of the test bases. I'm looking for a murky, greenish, icky water effect. a couple are close, but overall not the look I want. any comments, suggestions, ideas are more than welcome.

Hi all,
here are pics of the latest marines to be painted.
I have given up on a water effect for the bases. after twenty or so test bases and zero acceptable results it is time to move on.
I could use some ideas/ suggestions regarding the pustules. The fleshy-ish growths are overpowering and I would like the pustules to stand out a bit more without dominating the model.
thanks

just 1 thing you could add to make them better (maybe 2)
the 13th company wolfen might work well in units since they just need plaguing up
maybe a giant pus wolf as a daemon?
fur isnt too much trouble sculpting, so you just find a large model, sculpt on muscle and face, then add the fur and any other little bitz needed.

gud work mate.
love the use of fantasy zombie parts.
i got ana idea 4 you though. i also own a chaos space marine army and this conversion worked a treat. buy an attack squad for a tenner and then go and get yourself some wolf chariots from the fantasy orc and goblin section. you may have to remove some bits to get the marines to fit but if it works you got a wonder ful set of bikers.

i did this with tomb king skeleton chariots and i will be showing them soon. alternatively for a nice set of wolfy bikers use grom the paunches chariot or mount chaos bikers on wolves from the Wolf

I have a few pieces of wulfen in some of the models in the army. i mostly used Berzerkers, Space Marines, and Chaos Space Marines because they are plastic and muuuuuch easier to convert.
the pustous wolf-demon is a popular idea. The current version of the army does not include one, however, I will most likely make one down the line.
deadly chicken wrote:Hows about that?
I like where you are going with the chariot idea. I wrote up a list with two units of bikers and a lord-on-a-bike. If I make them only the Lord would be on a chariot-ish ride. The regular bikers could be on a mix of wolf/dire wolves or even converted Juggernauts.

Hi all,
Just finished a couple 'o more Chosen. After receiving some new ideas on how to approach the water effect on the bases I tested a few other methods (various PVA things) and still haven't found an acceptable base. I mean it this time. I am done searching for a water effect for the bases.
Second I painted the pustules a bit different. Making them greenish. Moopy presented a different style to the pustules discribed here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/229947.page. It makes sense, however, I don't want to change the "growths" to look like dead skin. The living colors/aspect of the growths give me the feel that they are taking over the marines body.
Thanks to Moopy and Llamahead, I tried your suggestions they didn't work this time, but please keep them coming.

The plaguebearers on the first page have a step-by-step or color-by-color process at the bottom of each photo. Just substitute demon skin for marine armor and add the following:
Marine skin: gwf talleran flesh, vgc dwarf flesh, vgc elf skin, vgc pale flesh, gww ogryn flesh, gww thraka green, vgc deadflesh
"Growths": gwf khemri brown, vgc plague brown, vgc bonewhite, vgc bald moon yellow (just dab in spots), vgc pale flesh, gww ogryn flesh, gww baal red, vgc pale flesh, vgc bald mon yellow (once again only a few splotches).
If you any more questions please ask
thanks for the postive comment all. Once I finish the Chosen I'll post a picture of what is finished.

I see you updated your blog but the IT police at work won't let me see the nurgley goodness
Stretch wrote:You have some seriously cool looking guys! Where did you get the nurgly stuff for the rhino or did you make it?
Thanks. The nurglings, wolf heads, and tentacle are all GW bitz. the other stuff is "ProCreate" putty and bits of plastic tube and such.
After about a month I was finally able to base coat some models. During that time I assembled and converted another Rhino, Land Raider, Deamon Prince (as close to a gaint pus-wolf monster as I could get), and started another unit of plague marines. I will post pics as soon as possible.
On a side note I ordered a piece of foam from Battlefoam (the sabol sized 3 rhino, 6 termie) with "Sons of Pus" etched into it. I had to make a couple of small adjustments to fit the spikes on the front of each rhino. Other than that I am very pleased. It seems to be sturdier than the sabol foam and looks better.

Hi All,

Finished the remaining Plague Marines. Pics of the first four plague marines are just a bit higher on the screen .
Their rhino is assembled and primed, however, I want to build the remainder of the army (1 squad berzerkers w/ rhino, and another Plague Marine Pack) before painting it.
I did notice one very Homer-esque move on my part. The icons on the banner should be horizontal not vertical. D'OH!! Luckily the next group will have vertical lines and it should be easy enough to switch the banners.
I am thinking of using mostly berzerker bits (particularly helmets) for the berzerker squad and painting them to match the rest of the army or paint them will different colored sections to represent piecing together armor (kinda like thirteenth company). The berzerkers represent the new "blood claws" brought into the fold. Any thoughts or ideas are welcome.

The following are pics of a rhino for one of the plague marine packs. I've recently bought a new camera (Canon Power Shot SD1200) and these are the first pictures using it. Hi all,
Started painting the Demon Prince. I am happy with the robes, however, the skin needs a bit more work. I was thinking of adding some splotches of color to give a feel of disease and sickness.
I am looking for peoples opinions on a couple of parts.
1. Growths on the robe. I was thinking of painting some purple and others green, or should it look like the growths on the vehicles and have a sickly aura about it?
2. Scythe. either paint it black with jade-ish highlights, or paint it a very dirty, diseased, somewhat corroded metal? I am leaning towards the metal to keep a consistent decayed appearance but the idea of the weapon being dark and omnious keeps gnawing in the back of my mind.
If there are any other comments, suggestions, etc. please feel free to post.
Thanks

Hi all,
Here are a few pics of the army as it stands now. Mechanicon is about four months away and given the pace at which I paint I should be able to finish this army with a couple weeks to spare.
I've built a display board which mounts to a wheeled cart for ease of transport at a tourney or similar event. The foam portion is 2' x 2' which can be swapped depending on which army is being used. A apce belw holds codexi, rulebook, army list, dice, etc. Underneath is a nice are to hold a cooler for various drinks.

Actually, I started out painting it to match the bases of the models. One problem, you couldn't see the models very well. Everything was a shade of gray with little contrast and the models just seemed to meld with the background. So after several attempts at adding layers of white paint and not getting anywhere I decided to paint the display white. Now you can see the models and still get a feel for what I was trying to achieve with the model bases.

Yeah, those are Deadly Chicken's. He was showing an example. Nice idea, but you're right. It doesn't fit this army.

thanks.
Here are pics of the finished rhino. I went with fewer streaks of rotting flesh highlights than the first rhino. I do prefer this look.
Good news. Only eight infantry and two vehicles remain.

Hi all,
Just a few WIP pics of the berzerker pack.
I am undecided about the helmets. It's not that I am displeased with the results it's just so ... bright. I am thinking either keep the edges of the "horns" orange and paint the remainder like the rest of the armor, or keep the interior part of the "horns" orange an paint the remainder like the rest of the armor.
The last pic is of my painting station.

Hi all,
The Berzerkers are done.
I tried a couple of different variations with helmet colors. Ultimately, the original all orange helmets looked the best to me.
A bit of my fluff for this unit. The Berzerker Claws are new recruits to the warband. Therefore, they get the leftover / unwanted equipment (except the Skull champion). They also are feeling the affects of a tainted Canis helix and have an uncontrollable drive to get into hand-to-hand combat which is why they are berzerkers and not plague marines.
Only two vehicles remain. A rhino for the berzerkers and a vindicator. It's about five weeks to Mechanicon and all should be ready without to much trouble.
Thanks and take care

Hi all,
Well after two years or so of painting the day has finally come. The Sons of Pus are finished (for now)!!!
Here are pic of the Berzerker Rhino and Chaos Vindicator.
I'll post pics of the full army after Mechanicon. Hopefully, Papa Nurgle will bestow his blessing upon his followers and influence the dice to above average rolls.
Thanks and take care.

Hi all
Well I made it back from the Mechanicon.
It was a great weekend.
The Sons of Pus managed to take second place for "Best Painted". The TOs used a checklist to determine painting score. I somehow received a 47/50. Using their checklist I figured anything from a 34 - 44 based on the criteria listed.
I started a battle report if any are inteterested.

Next up are Imperial Guard. When GW released Apocalypse they had army deals. I picked up the Guard Company and Sentinel deal and it's about time to put them together.
Thanks and take care

I love the idea and the conversions, but the painting seems a bit blobby, especially the highlights. I know Nurgle is supposed to look dirty and rough, but you should consider using a smaller brush, and putting less paint on the brush when you highlight. Also, I would try transitioning between highlights and shadows a little less drastically, the almost pure white highlights right next to the almost black shadows on the purple horns is a bit much.
Don't take the criticism badly, the above is just my bigoted opinion
Still, I love the idea!

Ach, crivens!!! I needed to hear this two years ago At least I have something to consider as the army grows.
Actually, the Blobby highlights were intentional (for the most part) in order to give it a Nurgley feel.
I see what you mean about the purple to white highlights. I was trying for very small highlights with the white but obviously layed it on a bit thick. When you say small brush how small are you talking?
Thanks and take care

I am thinking, for a small brush, about size 0? Trying to do really smooth transitions from one color to the next on horns is very hard, so just keep practicing!

Very nice. I love your style. The first few painted minis had me reading through.
The orange noggins? Not so much. You may still win me over if you can pull it all together in the army though.

Hi all,
Looks like I will be attending The Colonial GT in March. I will be taking the Sons of Pus (no more infantry guard lists, ugh). I haven't used these guys for a fair bit and they need a little TLC.
I did change the army list a bit. Out is the lone Obilterator. In are two plague marines and warptime on the Demon Prince.
The first thing up is a new display board. I liked the previous version, but it was very cumbersome. It was 24" x 24" and could be mounted on a portable cart. I picked up two wood painting panels from Dick Blick. One is 12" x 24" and the other is 20" x 24". Both are 1 5/8" deep.
They can be found here: http://www.dickblick.com/products/american-easel-wood-painting-panels/
I next cut a piece of 1" thick foam and 1/8" masonite to fit inside the panel (10 1/4" x 22 1/4").
I drew a grid pattern on the masonite and circled the areas where to cut out holes.
I used a 1 1/8" hole saw for the 25mm bases and a jigsaw to cut out the 60mm base.
All my infantry models have metal washers on the bottom of each base. So I put a piece of magnetic stripping between the foam and the masonite. It gives it just enough tack to keep models from falling over during moves from table to table.
I sprayed the masonite with a layer of gray.
Than a couple layers of white.
Because the board is a wee bit snug I marked each spot for each specific model.
Pics of the army on the board.
I will have some touch ups to do on some models and make new army lists.
When I am finished with the Space Rangers I plan on adding some new models (like a Defiler). The new Chaos codex will hopefully be out by than.
Thanks and take care

Hi all,
The Colonial GT requires three objective markers. So I decided to make five.
I figured since I was going to have to make three it wouldn't be difficult to add another couple.
Nothing real fancy. Just used five 25 mm bases and copied same insignia as on the rhinos. Also the same style of greenstuffing.
Hopefully, the weather will cooperate in the next few days and I will be able to prime them.
Thanks and take care

HI all,
Well, it's been a mere two-and-a-half years since the last update.
I came home from work one day a couple of months ago to see a smallish cardboard box. Inside the box was an Ultraforge Greater Plague Demon. The model was a gift from a friend who knew I wanted this model, but couldn't justify buying it (for many reasons). I was in the final stretch of a Grey Knights / Inquisitor and retinue project so this arrived at a perfect time. I had wanted to get back to this army, but another project always seemed to get in way. Now there was no excuse. Time to get Nurgley!
The Ultraforge Greater Plague Demon will count as a Great Unclean One. However, in order to use it with the Sons of Pus I also needed a troops choice to make an allied detachment. I have oodles and oodles of Nurglings laying about so I decided to make four bases.
First up, GUO parts
Second, added a pin to make the bond stronger (when it is time for assembly)
Third, Added a "growth" to match the Sons of Pus
Fourth, base is ready for priming. More on bases to follow.
Fifth, started adding some pieces of fur (to tie in with wolf theme).
Work on Nurglings has progressed as well.
I will have three nurglings on each base. I tried four per base but it was too cluttered. Notice the ring 'o greenstuff. The plan is to build a lip in order to make the bases appear as if the nurglings are making their way through a pool of muck, pus, general grossness. It is a holdover idea from the original Sons of Pus that I could never get to work. Recently, I've had some success with Secret Weapons Miniatures Realistic Water and Tamiya Clear yellow.
Bases with gravel
Bases with "growths". One Nurgling will be in the growth portion.
Finally, about two years ago I picked up a Scibor Miniatures 28mm Rotten Lord. He will be my counts-as Typhus. Not much is done with him...yet
Thanks and take care

HI all,
Thank you.
A little more work has been completed.
I added a bit more greenstuff sections of fur, growths, and pustules. I was able to put a few layers of paint on the model with an airbrush. I am attempting to refine my pre- shading skills. Still have room to improve, but it is getting better.
Starting with the Great Unclean One. It's not as bright as the photo shows. Guess it's time to practice with the camera.
A slightly better photo from a bit above the model.
Horns and Nurgling
Base
Some leftover Plaguebearers to use for test purposes
Closer view
Counts-as Typhus is coming along. Just added some GS.
With Pre-shading (although it is difficult to see due to my complete lack of understanding how to work a camera).
Hopefully I'll be able to get some paint on the plaguebearers over the next few weeks. Does anyone have a preference for Nurgle demon colors. I'm thinking of trying a few options.
Thanks and take care

HI all,
I was able to get some paint on the Plaguebearers. I went with five test models and some have a few variations. Some are more traditional than others.
Start with a group shot and than individual models.
Group
"A" - Reaper Master Series Paint (MSP) Undead Skin triad with three different washes. Right side with Secret Weapon Miniatures (SWW) Fallout, belly and left leg Tamiya (TAM) Clear Yellow / Clear Green / Thinner (1/1/4), head and left arm SWW green.
"B" - MSP Stone Grey triad with three different washes. Left side with Citadel Shade ( CS) Agrax Earthshade, right bottom with Citadel Technical ( CT) Typhus Corrosion, right top with Vallejo Smoke.
"C" - MSP Violet Red traid with a wash of TAM clear red / TAM clear blue / Thinner (1/1/4).
"D" - MSP Sun Yellow traid wiith four different washes. Left leg with SWW Yellow, right leg with SWW Fallout, Left arm CS Cassandora Yellow, right arm TAM clear yellow.
"E" - MSP Orange triad with a wash of TAM clear Orange / Thinner (1/2)
Group - Slight lower angle than above photo.
The plan is to pick two or three variations to paint two squads of fourteen. I feel it will be more interesting to look at and paint if some non-traditional colors are used. Innards, tentacles, etc., color will be based on skin tone.
Does anyone have a preference? Any thoughts of color options not shown?
Lastly, my son was watching me take photos after which he insisted on taking photos of his mini-figs (he's almost four).
Thanks and take care

Hi all,
I know it's been awhile, but this project continues to expand.
A mere eight years ago a few comments referenced adding a Wolf Pus Demon (see the first page). It has been something in the back of my head ever since. Last week at the local FLGS i was perusing their Reaper Bones collection and found a Wolf Demon. Oh, my! A base model for the Wolf Pus Demon had just appeared.
This guy.
It's a little shorter than a GW Demon Prince, but taller than their GUO.
Time to break out greenstuff and some plastic tubing.
Some small gaps needed to be filled and tubing on his back, similar to the Typhus model, were added.
The claws aren't going to be a part of the model and I'm not really feeling wings or such. Not exactly sure what's going to happen with them.
Added bits of pustules and fur to make it a wee bit more Nurgley. The base for a bloated belly and innards is complete.
Probably going to add some tubing to its arms and legs to show it was space marine to begin with and has been warped over the millennia.
That's it for now. The plan is to get him done over the next few weeks and have it ready to paint for one of Paradigm's Unofficial painting contests.
Thanks and take care.

Hi all,
A little more progress has been made on the Wolf Pus Demon. I'm thinking he will be used as a Great Unclean One when summoned from a Psyker.
Still have a fair amount to go. Need to add more cables, fur on the arms, and permanently attach the head
Probably a few other things as well.
Thanks and take care

Hi all,
A little more progress to report.
Added some fur. I had to switch to brownstuff because the greenstuff is almost gone. Glued some sand mix to the tubing on its back.
I will be adding more fur bits and pustules and more Nurgley goodness. Still working ideas for the base. Head still needs to be permanently attached
Thanks and take care

Hi all,
The Wolf Pus demon is built and ready for primer!
Finally attached the head and added some tentacles coming out of its mouth.
Added some schmutz to the end of the exhaust port.
Added some growths down the length of the tail and a cable on its back.
Added some bits of fur on its arm.
Not sure if the Nurgling will stay.
Time for some primer and hopefully it fits the theme for next month's unofficial painting contest (Paradigm's).
Thanks and take care

Hi all,
Because the unofficial Dakka painting competition is open for anything I've decided to give it a go with the wolf-pus demon.
The skin is finished and work has begun on the fur. It's going a wee bit more difficult than imagined. It's just three shades of undead skin (reaper triad) with athonian camoshade. The shade tinted the fur a little more yellow than anticipated, but I like how the coloring. I can't seem to get enough contrast between the peaks and valleys of the fur. Hmm, something to ponder and experiment.
Thanks and take care

Great work. What do you wrap around the based to keep the water effect in? I did an epic fail when I tried something like that.
