I would say that you need to thin your paints a little and the GW washes would be your friends.
A Devlin mud or Ogrin Flesh wash on the top pic would make a huge difference

Devlin mud over ever inch of it.
in fact, devlin mud over every one of them and be amazed

Post by: deadly chicken
im mixed about the delvan mud, it would add some depth but might spoil the finery and richness of the armour and definitely will spoil drach'nyen

Wash with DM and then high light back up the armor. It will look 100% better i promise

Mix mud with sepia. It gives the "pop" of mud but kills some of the actual "mudiness" of the color and coverage.
All of the washes are ok but they really shine when you mix them.

My chaos looked like crap when i was painting them.
So dont feel bad. You will get better at painting chaos marines as time comes and goes. Dont give up on trying.

great work i love the cream trim, how did you get that red hint?? one problem for me, i dont think cutting of the horns made the helmet look much better.
but once again great work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hmm, Chicken:
o It's not bad at all, it's just pretty basic. By this I mean the models don't have much depth in terms of shading and highlighting, and it's mainly flat colour for the most part. This is on no account a bad way to start, but if you want to start improving then you have to start trying out new, scary methods.
o Popping on a couples of washes will dirty up the men nicely. Upon that quite harsh red, it will have a nice effect. Perhaps mixing in some orange with the red to highlight it will bring out a more Khornate/Lava-like effect, which will bring you miles from where you currently are.

Post by: Mighty Moj
You can't see it in those pics but the horns are part of his trident. So they weren't removed for asthetic reasons.
11490
Post by: Mighty Moj
Here's the lord in full. the cream with a red tint is done by painting bleached bone washing with baal red then highlighting with bleached bone.

I don't play Chaos, but I did a Typhus.
Also, Deadly Chicken, I recommend you either: A) thin your paints, or B) use a smaller brush. Your paint ends up so thick that it fills in many of the details of the models, and just looks messy. By thinning your paints a bit, they no longer end up obscuring the sculpt of the mini. By using a smaller brush, you can attain a higher level of detail, as well as be more careful about what you fill in.
11516
Post by: deadly chicken
thanks for the tips .love your typhus but just not enough contrast. looks too dull to me.
10347
Post by: Fafnir
Contrast you say?
How's that? I've heard complaints saying that the contrast on this Typhus pic is too high, so I opted to use that first one.

Post by: deadly chicken
hi guts just bought a TONNE of space marines of my mate and i need some help with conversion any tips on how to remove a shoulder pad?????
12136
Post by: Lorgar's_Blessed
Alright, here's what I do to remove shoulder pads. I only use regular super glue, not plastic glue, so I'm not sure if this'll work for the latter. I take a paper clip and pull away one of the edges. Then I take pliars and flatten it as best as possible, and I mean VERY FLAT, so that it is even bendable. Coat it in nail polish and slip it into the small crack between the shoulder pad and the arm. All it'll take is a bit of working. Be gentle and eventually, it'll come off, without a bend but you'll need a bit of pressure to pull it up off.
11516
Post by: deadly chicken
I'll try it thanks!!!!
I'll also get some finished pics for you

Both are from Forge World- the titan is one of 3 I've got to back up my Word Bearers Army (9000pts)
The Warhound I think now goes for £290 and the Greater Bloodthirster is £125- expensive but well worth it....
I've got the new Brass Scorpion next on the painting list - I'll add in pictures once I've started it.

the next two super heavies were commissioned work.
a reaver
and a brass scorpion
the same guy also wanted some fallen terminators for his chaos army, so I obliged.
closed robes
open robes
these were the test models, I wound up making twenty five for his army.
because there is so much nurgle love in this thread, here is a pic of my great unclean one. I've been playing for a very long time, and have a soft spot in my heart for a lot of the older models. the old GUO was too small, so I re-sculpted him to be in line with the new greater daemons.
I think this is probably the fourth or fifth model I sculpted completely out of clay. hes a bit rough around the edges, but I like him.
here's a good group shot for scale.
and in keeping with my trend of pictures that apply yet don't, I give you the following.
my beer stein (its huge, it holds 32 ounces of tasty beverage. I made it out of a flower vase, haha.)

Oh man! I love those Fallen Termies! I was hellbent on making Death Shadows for my CSM army and that is EXACTLY how I want their robes.
Got any tips on how to do that up on regular CSM bodies?
11516
Post by: deadly chicken
or in stead just us dark angel parts.
8689
Post by: pox
it would be the same with regular marines as it is for termies, with the exception of the cut-out for the backpack.
one trick I figured out early that might help is to do the torso and legs separate. I put the rope waistband in there for a reason.
I basically shaped the hood out of clay, the stuck it to the head. next, I added the clay to the torso, and smoothed in the creases. ( get rubber tipped clay shapers, they make a world of difference when doing soft features.)
for the lower half of the robes, do the overlapping creases in the front first, whether they are open or closed. once you have the hard lines, add in the clay for detail. I also use magicsculp for detail like that, rather than greenstuff. it dries much harder, so its easier to make armatures out of it.
if you only have green stuff, then come at the front from the sides. get your detail built up over the knees, then let it dry. after its hardened, you can add in the flap to the front. for these models, it took about three trys to figure out how the clay was going to sit on the legs. I'm still not happy with how the cloth sits, but the client was happy, so that was good enough for me. the later ones came out much better, so over the coarse of doing it 25 times, I kinda figured out how cloth sits.
closed robes are much, MUCH easier than open ones. with the closed robes, you can just build a pile of green stuff between the legs, and start to shape it when its at the right thickness. I would definitely try the closed robes first.
another tip is to make sure any and all erroneous detail is removed from the legs. if they have thew mark VI style legs with the prominent shin guards, cut the top off of the knee so it doesn't bulge out the robes.
hopefully I helped. if not, you can PM me with specific questions.

deadly chicken wrote:OMG......
Wow she kicks ass! i totally love the spear! how did you do the skin ?!?
The skin starts with a 2/1 mixture of liche purple and dheneb stone. Then I add tentacle pink and blood red to the mix and paint a layer. Then I add bleached bone to the mix in three successive layers followed by washes of baal red and liche purple, then I re-highlight with the lightest shade of my mix.

@ pox what was that stuff you used for the termie robes? is it similar to green stuff?
8689
Post by: pox
Its similar to green stuff, it just has a few different properties. Its a two-part epoxy clay called Magicsculp. It cures much harder than GS, and has no memory. I like using it, it just takes a little while to get used to it if you've used a lot of GS.
The biggest benefit to me is cost, Its about thirty bucks for five pounds.

Must admit, that above pic of the marine with the horns is quite good.

pox wrote:Its similar to green stuff, it just has a few different properties. Its a two-part epoxy clay called Magicsculp. It cures much harder than GS, and has no memory. I like using it, it just takes a little while to get used to it if you've used a lot of GS.
The biggest benefit to me is cost, Its about thirty bucks for five pounds.
hmmmm sounds very good! might have to purchase some

Thanks dudes. I made a whole unit of CSM who are "veterans" (odd word for CSM) of the EoT campaign, using the Possessed bodies, legs and backpacks, with possessed/mutation/commandd frame heads mixed through. Since there's been a positive reaction, when I paint the whole unit I'll definately post pics.
