Ard Boyz this year? @ 2009/05/25 12:19:09

Post by: Sarigar

My FLGS announced over the weekend to us 40K players that GW advised there is going to be a Ard Boyz tourney. The FLGS was in contact with their GW rep last week and this was what the GW rep advised. The first round would be in July (2nd weekend IIRC). 2500 point format and painting (still) not a requirement. Anyone else get any info on this?

The official announcement should be in the next white dwarf.

Details pretty much what you have heard: July 11th, 2500 pts, 40k. No need for paint, all models must be WYSIWYG. 3 games using normal 40k rules and normal force org chart. List of stores running it is being compiled. If you want to play, encourage your store to run the event. The manager should contact his rep in the Trade Sales department. The store should have room for 12 players on standard 6'x4' boards.

Fantasy will be later in the year and WoTR will be early next year.

July 11 and 12 for "ardboyz"

July 18 for Lucky 13.

No overlap.

Ard Boyz is a tournament system that starts at your local store, then next round regional then goes to a national final.

Essentially it is a power gamers wet dream.
Models can be unpainted, no sports points, too many points so you only get a small amount of games with too much ability to pack an army with chesse (I'm hanging for a 9 LR demolisher tank IG force)

I'd like to see it done at 1850 to make people think harder about their lists and get more people involved (2500 is a hell of alot of points)

2500 points = alot of money spent. Hence since this is put on by the GWNA Trade Sales department, their motivation may be a little different than the Community/Events folks. Just a hunch.

It could very well be the IG lists vs. the anti-IG lists this year.

Like, say, every other tourney out there?

The high limit (and no-holds-barred rules) are what make 'Ard Boyz unique. It allows those of us who play nicely the rest of the time to be ruthless for a day. The high points-value also encourages powerbuilds that simply won't fit in 1750-1850 tourneys. Sure, it scales some things out. But hard choices are still there in huge lists.

I'm looking forward to this year's event.

Competitive IG should be taking an IQ with Mystics, and at those points he'll almost certainly be in a Valk/Detta. Have fun trying to deepstrike through 3 free demolisher shots on each unit of oblits before they get to shoot at the tanks

at 2500 points you can fit a hell of a lot of melta's in a Vulkan list. Please, bring the tanks. Killing a leman russ on a 3+ on a pen for being in a squadron sounds awesome to me.

3 demolisher cannons in a squadren, the inq with mystics nominates a unit in this instance, the 3 demolisher russes, get a free shot on the drop.

Post by: Black Blow Fly

There is no reason necessarily to deep strike the oblits if you know your opponent has mystics. Also you could take a unit of inflitrating Chosen with an icon and bring the oblits in outside of the mystics' effective range. An IG army with a lot of treads is not going to be able to deploy all their tanks within the range of the mystics. The oblits are also an excellent choice for sniping guard gunships, the gunships can't hide from walking lascannons.

to an extent he's right. But when facing a guard army with 9 leman russ tanks I'll think I'd take the first turn given the choice.

Especially if it's the "joining this battle in progress" or the "wacky" scenario. This was the one where you alternated deploying squads one by one, anywhere on the board. First turn charges by nids into your entire army sort of decided the game.

Nope, he meant three Demolisher Cannon shots plus all other weapons that can bear. Actually rather easy to do. Field a squadron of three Demolisher. Inq and two or three Mystics park themselves within 12" of any vehicle in the squadron. Deepstriking/summoned shows up. If the Mystics detect the unit as it arrives, then any UNIT (such as a squadron of tanks) may be nominated to fire at the arriving unit. And what's more, that squadron of tanks can fire at each and every detected unit in any given turn.....................

Looks like some nitwit (namely me) hadn't fully considered the effects of the new squadrons.

Would Demolishers really be the way to go anymore, or maybe a squadron of Plasma Death Tanks instead?

the first round last year had store all over the place. place near seattle would be fantastic games in edmonds. I played there 2 years ago and made it through. there were some really small places out on the peninsula that probaly would be the easy way through. mech eldar versus the horde is a tough match up it really depends on my deepstriking rolls on my oblits and the mission. I will probaly go to the same place as asugrad, ernies games in woodinville.

Dude, you really have to ask yourself that question? The whole year is full of well-balanced comp-heavy opportunities for respectful play amongst gentlemen (er, gentlepersons). A nice head-kicking gladiator tourney is pretty unfortunate to miss. I do hope the Washington semis are on the wet side of the state, though.

[Tangent alert] As for 3 Deathstrike lists, would that even have a chance, given how long they take to launch?

And War of the Ring 'Ard Boyz is on that schedule too... has there been a LOTR 'Ard Boyz before?

We're currently using our store finder database for the store listings, so you can click on the store name and see addresses, map, directions etc. Currently that database doesn't display the state name in the list. I see how it can be a bit daunting to find a store in an area you are unfamiliar with. I'll put up a spreadsheet with the states attached for easier reference this week.

Thanks for the feedback,

John

Some IG players wanting to do an armored company are going to get a rude awakening when they face a Crimson Fists army (or Sterngaurd heavy army). 1 - 5 man pod with combi meltas = 185pts and will likely pop one russ and damage another. I think people are gonna be ready for the new IG.

Now all we need is leaked missions like last year.

They weren't leaked last year. They posted the scenarios the week before each round.

I think he was talking about the previous tournament in which they were leaked, so half the people showed up knowing the misssions with teaked list & the other half were owned.

Like always Skkipper comes through. I was talking about the 2007 tournament, as I remember a lot of people complaining about it.

In this powergamiest of settings, it seems like a good idea (well, at least taking the minmaxing to the heights of ridiculous) to let things be truly tailored the whole way, even specifically to the scenario.

At the WA semis in 2007, most folks who already had them passed the scenarios around to most other people anyways. It was the fair thing to do. Maybe some players didn't get to build their lists for the scenarios directly, but at least they got to consider tactics for a while before the games. I would've built my list the same way anyways, having already minmaxed as hard as possible.

Is that the complete/final list of stores for the qualifiers? It has no stores listed for Iowa but the guy at the flgs (mayhem comics) said we were confirmed for running it again this year.

Hello again,

We'll be posting the scenarios a few weeks before each event. They are being playtested currently.

An informational packet for stores running Ard Boyz events is going out via email today. It has sign up sheets, flyers, results sheets and other useful materials. Trade reps will email them to participating stores.

There may still be a few stores that need to be added. All participating stores not currently listed online should contact their trade rep to confirm and make sure the trade rep forwards the info to me.

John

That may have been the joke he was trying to make.

they were in 5th edition... but they weren't 5th edition missions... well not exactly anyways. They were basically all KP missions! which is kind of a throwback to 3rd... and 4th ed

Anything but kill points please. The missions will determine if I try and make it a go this year. If they are current 5th edition rules no thank you. Playing a 2-3 hour game trying to pull out a KP victory is about as exciting as #%^$#$%.

Maybe they will mix KPs with objectives. That would rock.

At least one KP mission makes ties the event to conventional 40K strategies at least a little. Also, KP (in moderation) compensates against a min-sized unit strategy. Otherwise IG would _really_ run the show. Even with blobbing, all those support units will be a liability.

Hi John

Thanks for posting information regarding the event here. Would you please be so kind as to address if the GW FAQs and Errata will be used along with the rulebook?

Thanks!
G

The FAQs are always used.

As John has already posted, GW has the three-page info sheets in PDF on their web site.

The most interesting points for me were the clarifications on codices:

1. How the new IG and SM codices affect allies for WH/DHs.

2. That Grey Knight Terminators can't ride in Valks or Vendettas.

3. That Deathwatch SM are no longer used.

4. That I completely missed the Blood Angels update in WD 329-330. Guess I'll be shopping around for some old magazines...

[Edited to remove link that John already posted on page 3 of this thread]

Has anyone heard about an updated store list coming out?

I'm travelling from upper michigan to play . . . somewhere hopefully, and any of the locations I've contacted either, aren't sure they are running it because of a Magic pre-release, just flat out not running it, one even indicated it was closing.

I have a detailed list of all the stores down here in Florida that will host the preliminary round. Some will play on Saturday and others on Sunday. Supposedly there is a shop in Georgia that will run the 1st round on the following Saturday. G

I would be very, very interested in hearing about any store that is running the tournament after the first weekend. If someone can confirm the stores name, and have a phone number for them, please PM me. We were told that was not an option, even already had a 2 day tournament scheduled for that weekend.

(And to be fair, GW is helping us to manage running both events on the same day. More curiosity here than drama.)

I don't know how many stores are listed in Georgia for the first round but I reckon if someone were to call them they would probably find out. It's not a big deal to me as I'll be playing down in Florida.

Well, it doesn't look like they're going to get the list of stores fixed up in time, and if they do people probably won't be seeing it in time to matter, so I figure I'll throw an ad for our location up here.

Mayhem Comics in Des Moines, Iowa. Biggest gaming room in Iowa, or so they advertise. It's at least the biggest I've seen and twice the size of where I went for semis last year. Best of all you'll get a chance to play against me and see if my recent losing streak continues! (it's been really bad)
