ooook, so i am pretty close to hooking myself up wit one of these bad boyz... http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/chaosd1.htm (unpainted pics) http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/chaosdp.htm (painted pics) The forge world, "Great Chaos Dragon"... IMO it is quite possibly one of the best and most detailed looking models ever made, but again thats just my opinion. on the other hand i needed some help with what colors to paint it... i was thinking of black skin/scales (not that theres much of it) and red insides... although i was also thinking about blue insides... and now that i type it and it pops back into my head i like the idea of blue insides better... any suggestions on different color choices and or how to achieve the look?
CURRENT FULL BODY PROGRESS PICTURES ON LAST PAGE... EVERYTHING IS GLUED TOGETHER NOW! JUST NEED TO FINISH FILLING GAPS AN PAINTING

SEE? Its perty aint it? I cant wait to paint it up, i just thought of something, if i was to say play a battle with any of you with my orcs and goblins... would you allow me to use this Great Chaos Dragon as a Dogs of War using the proposed forge world rules http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/pdf/dragchaos.pdf ??? it would have to be a 3,000+ game and it would use all of my rare choices of coarse... soooo would ya? wink wink cough cough /cheer?

ehhh i would but i dun want a blue dragon... total turn off... its just not scary... like what if i was in the empire... itd be like "yawwwn another tzeetch dragon, kill em boys'' but if it was different itd be like '' OH CRAP A ''GREAT'' CHAOS DRAGON!!!" and since im not going to play tzeentch <_<

Post by: Buttlerthepug
yeah thats why i was thinking black and red... they would seem to go amazing together especially on this model. but what do you think about blue insides instead? i just think black and blue mite be even better D: so hard to figure out... D:

Post by: Vipera
If you go blue on the inside, consider black shaded to red scales. I'm doing an avatar commission this way, and it looks pretty amazing (self props!) the contrast between the hot and cool colors really makes the model pop.
Or you might do one part of the dragon blue, and the other one red, as it now has two heads... do they have two heads to begin with, or is that just tzeentch?
12471
Post by: Buttlerthepug
Ehhhh by the looks of the model, looks like it had 2 heads stuck together and chuck norris karate chopped em in half and it got pissed off. And uhhh i kinda get what you mean on the first way of painting... you have any pictures of it so i can get a better idea?
12471
Post by: Buttlerthepug
So i decided once i get it, imma do black scales/skin with red insides... and i saw it in person today... (local GW is holding one it seems.... ) but ONE WING... ONLY ONE WING... was the size of a stompa... err titan possibly... forgeworld bloodthirster is puny compared to it... AND THATS ONE WING!!! not to mention the wing is kinda in a half curled up shape... pure insanity i say...
12471
Post by: Buttlerthepug
Ok, sooooo tommorow im finally going to pick the model up!WOOOOOOT! anyhow, first things first, imma post pics with a comparison to orks, chaos marines, etc... but most of all, one wing to a stompa... omg its insande, then ill prolly spend most of the day washing all that excess off and making sure all the pieces fit together... and then on to painting which ill do before i glue it together... thats going to be haaaaaarsh.... Black and red will be the colors!

Post up pics PLEASE!!!
I'd like to see some WIP of the build itself.
Painting stuff I could elaborate on from the model itself, thinking off a gray sculpt is easier on me noggin'!

Black is a hard colour to do and loses definition. I would go with a rich dark brown colour and blood/gore red insides. From there shade up the brown to make the dragon either glow or rot.
Either that or a base of Dark Angels green, a dark green rather than a putrid green. Green with tan wings and belly is a traditional dragon colour. You could make undertoanes of the original dragon colour and thern chaos them up, with gorey bits underneath.

Not neccesarily, you could highlight the black with a different contrasting color to make it stand out more and be appealing. I like to highlight black with a light shade of blue, using very thin lines.

Yeah thats normally what i do, except i highlight with gray rather then blue and brings out the black ALOT more. However when people paint pure black with no highlights I 100% agree, it loses its definition and isnt as appealing.

Just cleaned up all the excess and flash on the model, and washing excess resin so it dont skrew up the paint job. Will update tommorow, and post pics of base as it looks swwwwwweeeeett!
12471
Post by: Buttlerthepug
Ok, well a quick update... Washed the model but can't do anything else yet... Im going out tommorow to get Brass rods to make sure its stable in wings and necks (paper clips wont do this time as they are really really heavy wings) as well as getting some varnish...
I was told at my local GW that its IMPOSSIBLE to get every last bit of excess resin off by washing it so after your done washing you should put a thin layer of varnish on the model to cover those excess areas. Then you prime and paint as normal... Also picking up the appropriate size base tommorow which then i cant start modeling... It will basically have a him standing on some giant rocks with lava all around him... Looks pretty sweet as ive tried it on random bases... Update tommorow!

That's awesome dude. Besides that one Rackham dragon, the FW Chaos Dragon is one of my favorite dragon models.
Are you going to put a Chaos Lord or some other rider on him, or are you just going to paint him by himself and use him as a display piece?
12471
Post by: Buttlerthepug
Well, theres no room ANYWHERE For a rider ill post pictures of his back to show you..
However I am going to make a single rock somewhere in front of the dragon with a paper clip or something, then make it so i can take a Lord of somesort on and off his base and the dragons... Hes temorarily jumped off the dragon for combat purposes <_<

maybe he's standing
or you make a place for him
or you have him commanding the dragon from below with chains
ther are 1001 possibilities.

Hmmm... impossible you say.
I would think a super-sonic cleaner, some warm water, and a bit of soap (can you put soap in those things?) would do quite nicely. The varnish sounds like it would work too though , I doubt it will ruin any of the detail as long as you are conservative with your primer.

I doubt this thing needs a rider, that is not particularly ballsy of the rider... well I suppose it is . Putting this guy all by his lonesome would be fine, I doubt he needs the muscle or brains to do his job; two heads seems to work well most of the time, as long as they can agree .

hurrah, I found your thread.
Looking forward to seeing progress on this, hopefully you can inspire me to paint mine.
I wont be adding a rider as it would either be used using the greater chaos dragon rules or the Galrauch rules, neither of which have a rider.
Heres a quick pic of mine so far..

Hey Sleazy, did you pin all your parts? Wings, Necks, Arms, Legs, etc? And did all your pieces fit rite in place? And did those white parts come like that?

Post by: sleazy
Hi.
yeah I pinned all major parts, I also used epoxy resin on the wings.
yes for soem reason mine was cast from 2 different colours of resin. I assumed they are all like that.
I still have a bit more filling to do on his knees and ankles and I plan to add more to the base.
12471
Post by: Buttlerthepug
Ah, Yeah mine came in all one color resin and im still working on pinning all major parts with brass rods (dont really feel like drilling into this specific model but oh well) Probably wont have it even pinned till late next week cause i got alot going on but oh well... will update as i go!
12471
Post by: Buttlerthepug
Been awhile since i got the model and havent started pinning it yet because of stuff going on however I am starting tommorow and will most likely have most if not all of it pinned. Will post pics when its all pinned. Then i get to touch up stuff and paint :O scary thoughts!

Finally got the most of it pinned. gotta wait for two parts filled with green stuff to completely cure so i can drill the last two holes then..
Will update this post with pictures of progress... then going to wash it again since it didnt get all the excess resin off (apparently I didnt leave it in the diluded water for long enoguh the first time... good to go now)
Then on to painting! Sweeet. Probably going to fo black outside with blue insides... Make it a bit more unique then the normal red insides.

Post by: Buttlerthepug
Sorry for the wait on the update. Well because of the drill bit/pin vice i used to make the holes they were the ever so slightest bit too big (not a problem cause i can greenstuff the tiny gaps to reinforce further). Here is a fewpictures of the Wings on the dragon as well as the two necks. Some time this weekend i hopefully plan to finish up this large task and move on to the ever so intense painting phase...
@Warmonger: Im not too sure how red AND blue would work out inside the necks... hmmmm although multi colors do give me some idears.

Basing it on the loose rubble looks good with one very major criticism, the feet have a large moulded 'web' of ground around them, they need to be flat on something or it looks like he's standing on two feet shaped boards...

Nice dragon. Wouldn't mind getting one myself, they look sooo big though!
I do have one critisism though. The rubble on the ground doesn't look quite right. Hard to explain this but it's as though the rubble layer is too, also try spreading it out less even.

Soooo I havent really been working on the model lately cause I zoned out about it. But I was reminded of the Legendary battle this upcomming saturday at my local GW so I get to work Extra hard this week to make it stand up rite and at least base it so i can use it in the battle... Wont have time to paint it but at least everyone will be able to see the building of it finally happen...
I Also finally picked up some of my WoC army today :O Will post pictures tomorow of the progress on Dragon... Actually green stuffed gaps in pinning holes so it actually stays together without my help :O I actually got the necks, arms, and both wings all on it at the same time without my support... Jaw almost dropped as i actually saw how it looked put together rite infront of meh...
Many Updates this week. Be prepared :O

Post by: Buttlerthepug
Ok heres some current pictures of the dragon as well as some of my other WoC stuff... Someone messed up the settings on my camera so the pics are a bit funky. Tha giant spined chaos beast (big red things) is due for a repainting... I dont like it anymore as I painted that a year ago and its just baaaaad...
The dragons stands different from the forgeworld pictures due to imo bad casting (figures aye?) but I kind of like it... Its not some proper up right human aye? However due to this the wing on his right side in the pictures make him fall over so i had to hold it.... Other then that im really happy so far. Got to work more on it... I got some of the webbing on his feet removed but gonna finish that up today... Dont think Im going to have him on the rocks as I planned before... Its more too annoying to try and get them just right... I just got to finish the other stuff before I worry about that though. Any comments or suggestions?

I'm confused *points at the base of the beast* why has it got 40K bits on it and you're comparing it to a WoC model? are they in the same army?
12471
Post by: Buttlerthepug
The Giant Spined Chaos beast was originally for my 40k CSM so thats why his base is like that. Ill probably end up just removing those and making it bits that can go both ways. Might as well do it since I plan on re painting it soon.
As for the dragon. I can now get both arms, necks, and the wings on at same time without too much movement from them. I have to drill holes for the base/feet/legs tonight so that he can stand on his own. Will post progress when I get home.
12471
Post by: Buttlerthepug
WOOHOO! Well besides me being more excited then a two year old finding waldo. I now have the Dragon on two feet with wings attatched :O :O :O <--- I know rite? thats what i thought. You might say "ummmm your still holding it" My answer is... You have a great eye for catching the odvious. Anyhow, the only reason I still need to hold it is because that leg im holding is the only non pinned (brass rod = pinning? or is there a bigger word?) part of the model. It will also be the most tricky for im sure you can see in previous pictures. EVERY other part that needs pinning, theres a way to go strait in on both parts. For that lucky leg there is not. Therefor I get to go into it at an angle, as my lovely diagram shows. It shouldnt be too hard but its more intimidating then any other task thus far (well there was one arm actually that was uber pain). The model is now pinned to his base so this is a major plus. If you havent noticed Ive decided against the giant rock thing he was to stand on... Too much work for meh not to mention The rocks were too perfect me thinks? Ah and while on the subject of basey like things. If you didnt notice the feet webbings are gone :O . I know know, how will he swim? Oh the horror. On the other hand while removing the webbing on feet one toe came off... Bet you cant guess which? If anyone does however they win a nice shiny nickel. ON TO THE PICTURES! EDIT: Just a little FF (fun fact mhmm) Me and mah friend measured today after someone spazzed about the 10" wing spam of the forgeworld bloodthirster... Hah... hah... This dragons Wing span is a wopping 17" O_o

Buttlerthepug wrote:You have a great eye for catching the odvious. Timing is everything... As for the missing toe is it the inside right foot one that has a bit chopped of? As for that brass rod dilema, I'm no expert but it sounds like a good idea.

Post by: Buttlerthepug
Havent posted progress in a few days. been working somewhat hard at getting the model done and he is nearly there! Tommorows the last day I got to work on him and looks like its gonna be done except for greenstuffing gaps (since oddly enough that will be after I paint) but it now stand on its own with both wings *cheer*
As for the leg I was talking about with the rod inside being at an angle. I also said it shouldnt be too hard... Well it was by far the hardest task of this entire model thus far. I made the crucial mistake of drilling its ground holes before finishing the models pinning. So I had to try and keep it aligned on its proper stance on the base and still try to find the correct spots to trill in. And on top of that the hardest part id say was bending the rod at the proper angle... However I finally got it. Its not 100% even but it actually came out better then way it is. now theres a slightly bigger gap between the two parts but they are aligned so the green stuff fixin will be much easier.
When it is all good and dandy tomorrow I will post pics of it... FINALLY COMPLETE!
Oh and no. It wasnt on the right leg that the toe was missing.. Got me scared though.. where is there a bit chopped off O_o ?
15873

IT IS COMPLETE!!!!!! Ok so I lied.. BUT It is constructionaly (???) complete... Besides greenstuff gaps, a missing tail (only cause I forgot to put it on when took pics) and no claws... Oh and t he heads... Actually on the heads Im thinking about glueing them right now cause it will brook so much more to the model and probably increase its cool looks by triple mhmm. However I think It will be much harder to reach the neck details by doing so... So I will most likely Pin them normally with industrial paper clips (dunno where industrial came from) and that will be that. As for the rest.... IT STANDS!!!!! WOOO Now I get to buy paints on saturday. I think Its going to be black outsides with green insides... Thoughts? Oh yeah... You want pictures I suppose?

Ok, well I think I might start painting this weekend. Im still stuck on Black Scales/torn flesh and green insides
Any Suggestions on how I can go about doing this. I am not an amazing painter but this model will have so much time going into the painting I want it to look like I am. With the insides Im thinking Ill work my way up from a dark green. Maybe go about it with Orkhide, Knarloc Green, Snotgreen, highlight goblingreen then a ardcoat on that to make it look nice and fresh... Or does anyone know a better way about this? Also what colors would be nice for highlighting the black. I know dark blues or greys are good for this.. Just not sure which (never really painted black since I first started and It looked horrible since it had no highlights.) Any help would be great before I mess this guy up O_o
11516
Post by: deadly chicken
you could start wide knarloc or snot green (or a mixture of both) then apply multiple washes of thraka green before re-highlighting the original mix and working up to goblin green and 'ard coating. or not.........

Post by: sleazy
wow dude, I turn my back and you get loads done! I was thinking a pale green colour for mine, would show off the red insides nice.

1st things 1st.
The model looks great, and its fething huge!
As for painting, i think a white base coat and then washes may be your friend here.
Due to the texture of the model you can easy get some washes down as base colours then build on that with 4-5 stages of highlights.
12471
Post by: Buttlerthepug
Alrighty then... Yeh Sleazy... I didnt touch it for like a month (feared it too much) then all of a sudden I got crackin.
So are for painting the insides. Go Knarloc Green followed by snot green with thraka green washes till I get a nice dark green down in there. Then follow up with highlights of constant lighter greens up to goblin green. Then Ard Coat.... Sound like that will work well? I mite make some crazy greenstuff scuplture to try it out on if you all think it will work.

Well I cant start painting today as I am out of greenstuff (and forgot to pick some up while I was out today... Doh! ) and need to gap the spots in between heads/neck and head/jaw... Got all the paints I need though so Ill have a friend bring some greenstuff over on monday and do it up! Will post progress on the painting of the neck #1 either monday or tuesday. Any tips on painting still greatly appriciated!

Well, they say if you heavily water down GW washes they only go into the recesses, whenever I want to paint black, but don't want to have just black w/ grey highlights, I put ton o black wash on codex grey. I think it would look cool if you painted certain details like eyes.

ooooook so its time!!! I am finally back on schedule and making mah way to my local GW. Gonna get me some greenstuff while im there (as much as I hate using the overly expensive and less quantity gw gs)... I will probably work on filling gaps on necks while im there (after a tournament Im playing in... WoC arent done so I have to play with my OnG... Im so dead) then prime tommorow and get painting! Will post picks... Any last thoughts before I take on this beast?

WOOHOO The first layer of the paint is on and im still scared as hell about it not comming out to my liking in the end! YAY! So anyways... Heres the first pics of it with paint inside the head... still got some of the tiny inside areas (ugh too much detail... wait... thats good... YAY) to do. I noticed after applying the paint however... ITS FREAKING SPINE THING IS SHOWING... thats an awsome detail I failed to notice and Im sure it will actually bring out some nice contrast in the neck... So anyways... Just wanted do do a very tiny update since Ive kept everyone in suspense for so long... heh... sorry bout the wait but its ON! I might get this moved to the P&M log so heads up on that... I want to get this model done without too many breaks now so yeah... Anyhow I got to go back and paint some more!!!!! wOOt wOOt!

Ok very small update... Previous post only had Dark Angels green... since then Ive gone over with snot green... watered down thraka green wash, and a 75-25 snot green-goblin green over the tops to add depth... Going to apply the goblin green and more thraka green wash then do some details and ard coat... then off too do all those little decaying type areas on the skin side (whats left of it anyways). Any suggestions? Eyes will be red... for teeth and bone I like to use the almost bleached bone colored foundation paint followed by some devlan mud washes... Still not sure how Im going to highlight the black but Ill figure it out... still LOTS to do before that time comes!

I don't envy you painting that, it'd probably drive me crazy
Awesome looking model though, I've wanted one since it was released on FW, and I don't even collect WHFB. There must be a way to work it into 40k somehow
Good luck painting this though, it's one hell of a feat.
12471
Post by: Buttlerthepug
Ive worked on rules for 40k for it though... It annoys the hell out of me that FW Greater Daemons are in Warhammer monsters section but theres only 40k special characters for them.. no fantasy... And at least this model has WHFB rules but no 40k which is fine since its meant for WHFB but yeah... I might work on them some more since you just literally reminded me about it... I totally forgot I even started rules.
EDIT: Heres a Word Document file for the rules I have thought up...

Need a break from painting... the little tainted areas on the barely intact side is annoying as feth... Still have to do a goblin green on them all then a thraka green in them all to add the depth... anyhow. Heres the progress... The pics are all funky for some reason... The bone in the neck is a tan color with a very light thraka green wash (it makes sense to me... a fleshly ripped open head... im assuming some goo from the organs and what not would get on it eh?) and a devlan mud wash in little areas of the bone to make it more bone like... The pic made it look rather crappy though... :(
Gotta finish the red in the mouth... mechrite red all around then probably a devlan mud wash or two... Im extremely anxious to put on the ard coat (you can see a very small part at the bottom with it... it looks so grotesque! so anyhow... Me thinking about making the whole face green... The jaw looks like its decaying like the other side but it looks wierd to me... that entire side is ripped but the jaw it not... hmmmm...
What do you think? Make the jaw like the rest or keep it decaying but intact? Still looking for opinions on highlighting the black! Let me know... Ive just seen too many ways to do it and I never reall painted a black model... so yeah

The green is looking beast. All I can say would to make the bone more white and put a gloss varnish on the greens and mouth when your done. As for the black skin, I would do a blueish highlight because the grey would kinda look a little less natural to me.
Have you based the other head yet or are you painting this one up completely first? Can't wait to see the body.
15873
Post by: person person
I'm not sure what to do with the jaw, but for highlighting black 50/50 codex grey and chaos black or codex grey drybrush. Judging by its size, the 2nd way is the way to go. Damn, got ninja'd I like the blue idea.

Is the whole thing magnetized Pug?
wow o_o if you ever get tired of painting it , i wouldnt mind giving it a try!
12471
Post by: Buttlerthepug
Ah yeah, person. Im talkin to monger on the phone actually... we decided blue is the way to go... way more natural looking.... the grey would look awkward O.o Its not magnatized luna but theres brass rods in everything sooo they just pull in and out... the pieces are rather heavy and magnets frightened me for holding it together. EDIT: Necron Abyss work you think or too dark? I think if its any lighter it will look just as wierd as the grey though D:
18206
Post by: WarMonger33
Necron abyss would look good I think, can't be sure until I see it though. Can you paint up a small part with it real quick?
12471
Post by: Buttlerthepug
Just a little update... I tried NEcron abyss and it was too dark... there was another blue i used... mordian blue... it was much lighter and I did an extremely extremely light dry brush of it to the black areas that needed *highlighting* and it also gives some areas (like the decaying but still normal...ish... side of the face where its really flat on top) a bluish taint which I dont mind actually... I added the thraka wash to the little holey areas and Im going to finish up the details of green and finish the *highlighting* on the black then do all the udder fun stuff... horns, teef, tounge action... wow..., eyes, etc... then once its all done Ill do the gloss varnish and post some pictures :O
12471
Post by: Buttlerthepug
Well then.... Sooooo as Im painting I apparently have horrid light cause the pics show a blueish tainted chaos dragon... I LOVE IT! It looks rather good compared to the solid black... So I have put the gloss varnish on all the green areas and mouth however its much more "slimy" looking in person.. the pics fail to show that aspect... What you think? Im personally digging the blue skin tone... Ive actually had it in my head that black would be rather boring but I didnt want to change my mind on colors... IT WORKED OUT THOUGH! ON TO THE PICTURES! EDIT: the bone/teeth/spikes is not done EDIT EDIT: Warmonger made a point to me... I was saying that the jaw on the ripped open side still seems out of place... but I also need to make that blue too and not just outlined eh?

Well time to start on another head... I has prepped it up with gap filling and what not... Still need to trim down some teeth... But its pretty near done... Will finish it up and Prime/start painting tommorow night! Oh and this piece had a TERRIFYING mold line on the bottom part of the neck... I could trim it down other wise it would have ruined the model... So, I green stuffed a giant battle scar... I figured hey... this dragon just got its head cut in half... a freaking cut wont matter much eh? Oh and my damn shadow made the pic all... shadowy at the end... still can see it though! EDIT: and yes... that wound was the length of the freaking mold line that was 'uge and terrible... and untrimmable

Post by: Zid
lookin sick bro!
12471
Post by: Buttlerthepug
Nope... but the ground will be a red with dark grey rocks like my giant spined chaos beast somewhere in my gallery... a model that needs repainting actually However the base is done! I threw some chaos bits around... Got a few shields lying about, a giant chaos slab rock thing, a warrior helmet, a broken wheel thing, an a chaos icon... I was going to add more but it was just the right amount I think. Didnt look to overdone but it had the touch of chaos to the base... hope you like it... the sand looks kinda odd in the pictures but yeah... and I added the talons to the feet!
This is not my next painting task however... Im going for the main body next :O I know right... lets just say I was not happy at all while preping the body for paint... like 7 spikes from the back/tail were broken off (I broke a few while building the model but many were like that when I got it) and like 3 different mold lines! One strait in the middle, going up its crotch mouth... and one on the underside of each leg! And I looked through the other pieces... THERES A MOLD LINE ON BOTH ARMS! BAHHH and there was 3 total mold line between the two necks/heads... The feth... thats like... 7 major mold lines on this guy so far... bloody hell.
Well enough ranting on my behalf... THE BASE!

Wagon I might do... Anyone else got some ideas on if I should add something to the base?

Well... I talked to Romeo at Battlefoam and Im going to get a custom tray for the model... Rather a huge block of foam for the model (as it is far too big) And lets just say its to terribly hard to freaking trace... I did a poor job and am still foaming at the mouth since Ive done it like 7 times... It stands 13" high, 16" from wing to wing, and 14" from base to tail.... That should tell you have big this model is hehe... So heres some pictures of outline... Oh that a Chaos warrior... tiny little fella aye? Its the best outline I could get some Imma fax it over and see if it will work or if I should redo the outline... Anyhow, I need to go prime the main body of the Chaos Dragon and get painting so I can update you guys!

Pug , how many lvls of foam would be cut for the dragon?
12471
Post by: Buttlerthepug
Well It was just out of size for a normal custom foam cut from Battlefoam so it seems as though they are ordering a big block of foam... So I would assume just one giant foam case for it... odviosly it wont be going in any army bags/cases... Im not sure on the details yet but hopefully I can find out today or tommorow so Ill let you all know what the foams actually be like... And hopefully Ill have the model fully painted and together when the foam arrives

Becareful about the foam though, because horizontal layers will not protect the dragon or anything fragile that size.

Thanks for the comments! And sorry I havent posted in a while... got a tad bit lazy and was getting like, one step of green on the neck done then calling it a night... I primed the base and Im quite please with the results... What do you guys (and girls ) think? Anyhow, was just showing yall the base! Gotta go paint some more on the main body... I also was trying to do some parts on the body using only paints I had and kind of experimented on the veins... did a Baal red wash over Hormagaunt purple... I LIKE IT! It made a pinkish red look that looks rather good... will post pics later! Ewww look at all dem nasty areas I missed... Will have to go back and get those... no biggie!

Post by: Buttlerthepug
Again, not a big update :( as I have still been rather lazy... however tomorrow Im going down to my local Gw and getting a quick game on then will spend the rest of the day painting! a good 5-7 hours of painting without distraction... well unless something happens... In which case I come home and post on the Model Molester Horror Story thread, or the Best/worste sportsmanship... WOO! Anyhow... I got the base started... The rocks will be a dark grey (they arent as bright as in the picture) and the ground is a redish black type thing... It should go well once its all done... The body I havent got far on still.. only the neck is done and I noticed its a tad bit lighter then the necks... its really hard to tell irl actually but It should be a rather easy fix... Anythoughts? What yall think about colors for the main body? I NEED IDEAS!

Sorry for the late update again, I got home last night and was wiped... didnt feel much like taking pictures and posting them... But now I can! Anyhow... I went to my local GW yesterday, played a game against Warmonger33 and got a minor win off by 20 victory points... WOO! It was very lucky actually got a spell off that took out a skink priest on a Stegadon and exalted took a Stegadon last turn of combat... so It would have been a draw but I got lucky Anyways, I spent the rest of the day painting and thought I would get the entire main body done and start on some other stuf... NO SIR! I started off with some work on the base, got bored and decided to do the body before going back... So I spent almost FIVE HOURS! on the tail alone... All them little green dots... I would say about 200 of them, and a bunch Ive missed... Still need to go back and put the wash on the to It was quite irritating, but It will be worth it You might be thinking... eh thems be some rather sloppy dots you got going there mate... But once the wash is on, it actually cleans up really well... So thats the next step... Theres the base so far... Need to make the rocks much darker and the feet were really easy... they were all scales so it was just a drybrush of enchanted blue... they came out pretty good I think... Oh and there some pictures of the table we played on... just cause I think it was cool

Ok sorry for the really late update as Ive been kind of busy (ok... so I started playing WoW again and yeah... ADDICTION ) but heres a small update... I finished alot of the main dot type areas, any only have the little ones going up the back and middle of tail... I also started some blue highlighting on the skin... theres parts that are like kind of underthe skin but its still skin? Im not sure if that makes any sense or if you can identify them in the picture, but I plan on making them more blue-ish to add some color, since it still looks like the skin it just wouldnt make much sense to make it a totally different color... Any thoughts? Suggestions on colors? Anything? C&C please

Yeah I agree... im just not sure what... all I can think of is a really dark blue... the veins are purple so it cant be that... and not alot of other colors will fit in well aye?
WarMonger33 wrote:I dont know but the blue skin is missing something and I don't know what. It's really bothering me.
Probably the fact that like half of that picture didnt have the skin even done lol?

Post by: Buttlerthepug
Sorry for yet ANOTHER long off update...I have an excuse however! I did not end up going to GW on saturday which is usually when I get most of the painting done for this bad boy, and rather I played WoW for 19 hours strait and am wiped out of the game except for a few hours a day (compared to my normal 10-12 hours a day... im addicted lol) so Im starting to paint it more... although I keep painting my Soul Drinkers and its very distracting...
So anyways... I got alot of the veins painted purple and will probably throw a baal red wash on them. I painted the entire crotch mouth purple and will have a baal red wash on that as well as the other much smaller mouth right next to it. I put a heavier blue on the under skin areas that I was talking about and I still got to put alot of gloss varnish on the little dots strait down the back... Any ideas/suggestions? Will try to start updating every other day if not every day since I would like to get this piece done before monday...
Also, I plan on doing the greenstuff work between the neck/body gaps and feet-legs/body gaps after the body is finished being painted (I know I probably should have done this before painting but I would have missed SO MUCH detail!!!!! So Ill get it to work...
I need ideas for the wings!!! I cant leave the giant flappy part (membrane i think its called? I have no idea lol) black as well as the black arms for the wing... But I dont know what color to paint it? Help much appreciated... C&C asked for and much welcomed!
-Sorry for the bad pictures... will get better ones after I paint some more!

Post by: Buttlerthepug
So I started looking at the painted pictures of the Chaos Dragon on the FW sight to get some ideas (mainly with the wings) and after going back and forth looking at their painted version and mine (to see the details) I realized theres SO MANY raised areas and stuff, that it actually will work find leaving it black with highlights (although maybe a heavier highlight?) and it also occured to me that the areas I was questioning erlier about it being part of the skin but under it, its not really like that at all... its just like all the little decaying parts, its totally the insides but has some skin coming out of it kind of.... So I decided to paint them green as well (this is going to make the main body ALOT less boring actually)
Between those areas being green and the countless dots I have left on the upper legs and around the body as well as veins/mouths/etc it will come together quite nicely I think! So heres how the areas look with the green... much much better IMO....
After I finish my soul drinkers assault squad this week I plan to work alot harder at finishing the dragon before I start anything else.!
C&C Please!!

Alrighty so like I said last week, this week I WILL finish the body, and the base, and if I am moving at a fast rate whilst still maintaining a good job, I might try and do the green stuff work between the legs, and necks. Next week I will tackle the arms. I am making progress on the body and hope to have quite a bit done by the time I update next, however I have finished most of the large front areas where I decided to go with the green insides. It looks WAY better and definitely pulls alot of the boring from the model and just looks good overall. So heres some picstures!

Post by: Buttlerthepug
@ person person- Yeah, It will get another blue dry brush after I get done with everything else, I will end up actually highlighting alot of it rather then "drybrush highlighting" I think.
@Kizzay- Thanks for the encouragement!
@ The Shrieker- I dont think it has 40k rules ahah! But Ive made some although I need to revise them again
Ok so I constantly look back the Painted FW Chaos Dragon and this one picture really changed my mind about the legs and Im now doing what they did... It still needs alot of work but there it is so far... I also started on all the decaying areas in the legs and they need alot of work too... but ATM all this extra stuff is REALLY bringing out the main body from the rather dull areas it was in before.
C&C welcomed!

I think that the problem you're unable to put your finger on is two-fold.
1) You're not painting enough of the details. Hos body has multiple payers of torn skin and membrane and... God knows what... but you've painted it all black. Some of that stuff needs different colors... Maybe purple, like your mouths?
2) Your black... it's so dull. Your green is striking and vibrant, but the black with blue highlights is very muted and dull. the contrast is too great.
That being said, it's coming along VERY nicely, and I'm looking forward to seeing it when it's completed.

Sorry for the late update yet again, I just wasnt too much into painting (its a thing I do... I paint then dont paint for short-long periods of time... but now Im out to finish this beast of a model!!) so I didnt get anything done... Id like to finish the main body as well as greenstuffing it to the legs and painting that... by tomorrow. The pics are better then the previous ones so you can see more of whats done... I have mainly started to do green on the other leg as well as adding the gloss varnish to alot of places (the first leg, the croch mouth, few other places) and finally start on the random spikes and teeth (its not chaos without way to many spikes right?)... So here it is... will update tomorrow I promise!!!
Look at that tiny little chaos warrior... how cute!

Well bit of an update... no pictures though as its not a giant update... I just finished the body (for the most part... odviously theres some parts I can finish due to other pieces [arms/heads/wings] not being attatched yet. I did most of the highlighting (I still have the top of the tail though... DOH!) and I did it by hand rather than dry brush and it came out better me thinks.
I already glued it to the base/legs and greenstuffed the horrid gap between the two (partially horrid casting and partially my imperfact placing of pieces... Im only human ) and it looks fine... just got to let it dry then paint it up . Not much else except that the arms should go much much faster then the body (hopefully done by friday... I would assume so) I still have a little bit on the base to do that I mite try to finish tonight.
Then on to the wings which Im honestly not too sure about... time wise that is... It looks like it will be an easy piece to paint although intimidating... just green cuts and gashes with a lot of highlighting...
Will send another update by Saturday! Thanks for all the comments!! Really does keep me going on this haha... Im actually determined to get this finished out of no where... wish I would have had this determinationg like in July when I got the model and I wasnt swamped with school.

Nearly finished with one of the arms and started on one of wings... Im really hoping to be done with this model by the end of next week since I dont have school... Im trying to figure out what to do with the base... The rocks arent looking to good at all so Ill have to figure out something... How do you think they would look if I painted them black with red highlights so that looked more together with the rest of the base? as currently they are just way to bright and hard to highlight.
Sorry if the pictures werent amazing... I did them sort of quick.

Looks good, but have a feeling the wings are gonna need a little extra.

looking good, and I agree think it may need a little extra, but we will have too see . Question for you are those two little prongs comming out of the wing from the mold or are they for pinning?

Post by: Buttlerthepug
The wings arent nearly done Still got alot to do to them since theyre so massive and a major part of the model. The two prongs are brass rods for pinning

Now don't take this as me bashing your painting, or flaming, as I'm just giving you my honest opinion in a friendly, constructive format:
I'm not digging the blue at all. It's far too dull compared to the green (it looks like you just drybrushed some blue on the black primer and called it a day, which, in my opinion, is making the model look sub-par at best.)The reason the one on the FW is so striking to look at is that they took two contrasting bright colors that just pop out at you. If you contrast a vibrant, bright color with a dull blue-black (that, I'm sorry to say, looks more like straight primer with some blue drybrushed on) it really kills the overall look of the model. Here's my reccomendation if you want to go with a dark blue: give the skin a basecoat of a dark indigo/blue paint and THEN drybrush a lighter blue. Follow that up with a Devlan Mud wash, followed by some highlights of that same light blue (or some drybrushing in places that got to dark from the wash). This will make it not only less dull, but it will also make it a brighter and more striking contrast to the green.
I'm really not trying to sound like a dick. You're green looks incredibly cool, as does the purple, but I'm sorry to say the blue looks rather bad. It just looks like some quick drybrushes (of one color to bat). Do what you want, it's your model, but I just thought I'd give you some feedback other than "OH WOW THAT'S AWESOME!!!!!" .
Good luck, and I love the base .

It actually helps alot Darth Bob! Ill definitely try that out on one of the other pieces cause in all honesty Ive been trying to find a better way to the skin as the skin on the legs constantly pops out more and makes the skin on the body look bad and undone, no matter what I do... and I was almost tempted to just change the skin altogether (since all Ive done is the dry brush on most places, I wouldnt look any detail in doing this) but I will definitely give your aproach a go and see how it turns out! Thanks for the suggestion/honesty!

Well that's great! I'm glad I helped rather than offended (as that was my intention). To be honest I felt kind of bad for what I said, but oh well, no harm no foul. Be sure to post pics of a test model (try to find a test model with a similar texture to the dragon for a full effect).

Yeah, Id like to srip the paint off my Giant Spined Chaos Beast and repaint it (it looks terrible right now!!!!! and it needs to have a fantasy base... why I put it on a sqaure base with 40k stuff on it I have no idea..) so I might try it on that!

Ooooh I love that model! If any model's close to the texture of the Dragon it's that one. What you should do is (since you plan to strip it anyways) do some test on the model with its current paintjob, see if you can get the right effect, then do it on the dragon.

Will definitely try that. Another alternative I was thinking about was highlighting it red since Ive seen quite a few dragons done black with red highlights that look really good... and that would be alot more contrasting aye?

Make sure you have a good red formula if you want to try that. With the green he can come out looking like something out of walmart around christmas time.

Ok so its not much of an update... I havent gotten anymore work done on the dragon (this past week has been really rough) but I started stripping the giant spined chaos beast a few days ago and it still in progress... about 30 minutes ago I took a good look at the base and realized just how much I had skrewed it up... so I spent about 30 minutes prying it from its base without snapping off arms... Finally got it off and it still looks gawd awful so Its back in simple green to finish stripping (although I might have to change it over to that other stuff... drawling a blank... I made the mistake of watering down the simple green <.< )
Ill probably try out a few different things for skin tomorrow and see what I can do. Sorry for the not so exciting update :( Automatically Appended Next Post: Ok so its not much of an update... Alright time for pictures... so heres the thing... Theres good news and theres bad news... Bad news first: Im stuck on the look... of blue!!!! My thanks to you Darth Bob as I would never have honestly attempted fully painting the skin without your advice... The good news is: It looks better than the black!!!! And hopefully it isnt a terrible paint job... but Ill let you guys decide that! So as I said, I took your advice Bob, I started off with a base coat of Mordian Blue, followed by a fairly heavy wash of devlan mud, then a light dry brush of enchanted blue for highlights (might do this a little more, possibly not since I like the darker blue...) Odviously the only part of the wing that has these three steps done is the very end... Im thinking of doing another light wash followed by another highlight of enchanted blue... but Im not positive yet... What do you guys think? Suggestion, Tips, Comments? Really want to improve this if possible and willing to take the time to do so... So if you havent noticed... I didnt really do any test jobs on the giant spined (I need to get some more simple green as I mistakenly watered it down and not all the paint came off due to this). After its fully stripped however I think Im going to try for a nurgle beasty! Anyways, since I didnt have proper model to test schemes on I just went ahead and did it on the wing since it would have been pretty easy to strip and gave me a nice big area to test the skin... So what do you guys think? Like it better then the black? Like it overall? Needs more? Needs less? etc etc... C&C PLEASE! *Guess its going to be Tzeentch after all EDIT: I can use it as the specail dragon character for WoC too! I dont rememer its name cause Im drawling a blank but yeah... Galruch or something I think... Also... as I look at the pictures... my biggest worry was that the green wouldnt pop out as much... but its seems to do so even more imo! especially when I finish the rest!

OH my gosh. That looks 150x better. You did very good contrasting the green and the blue. It's a defenite improvement, and I'd love to see it put on the Dragon's head.

Haha well thank you! Its cause of your suggestion I did this anyways... so I decided the next part to finish would be the head! Now in all honestly... doing the blue isnt very time consuming at all... it takes very little time... mainly cause Im purposely not doing 100% coverage with the blue and im using a really big brush.... and the usage of a foundation paint helps as wel... and the wash is very quick too! Anyways... here progress at the moment... Odviously nothing is fully done but its getting there! Im going to try and work really hard this week so I can try and get it finished for the most part. But we'll see what happens...
Oh also forgot to mention that the blue makes the giant purple croch mount pop out ALOT more... also I spent like and hour or so deleting every image (I think it was like 300) in my Dakka Gallery since I had been uploading them by attatchments on threads (bad idea... no organization at all!) and I am re uploading the properly now... so feel free to rate/comment them on the gallery if you want! C&C as always!

Haha yeah... It was probably the lighting on the "Wing Only" pictures... I tryed to get better lighting and not use the flash on these last pictures and it looks like it helped quite a bit... still need to get me a photo box or w/e they are called

Fantastic. It's already looking sooooooooooo much better than before. Now, one thing I would do is pick out the vein-like bits on his tail with a light pink or red. Something that will pop from the blue.
Keep it up.

Ill have an update for everyone tomorrow I think, but I had another question in mind for every today... A color scheme for the FW Chaos War Mammoth... Me thinks this is going to be my next buy and Im deciding on colors... Ive been thinking about Black fur with a very light grey (almost a white) skin along with bright red wounds (as this would show up and contrast very well with the light grey) and dark red armour to go along with my Khorne WoC... what do you all think of this as a choice of colors? Or what would you do color wise?
Some info on my army to make it ezier to pick colors to help match and what not.
Khorne- Red armour
Snow bases
All the fur on models is done black with grey highlights

Sounds awesome to me, but I think it'll need some extra wow-age like the blue on the dragon.

Hmmmm what would you suggest then? The black fur on the mamoth will show up alot more then the blue since Im highting with grey.

Not generally. It normally turns out fine as long as you make it an extreme highlight.

Sorry for the really late update... I havent worked on it a whole lot due to me starting to paint my WoC army and other various things... Im going to start work on it again tomorrow and will have some actuall pictures for ya. Might even through in some picks of the Giant Spined Chaos Beast (which is looking better than I thought it would >.< )
On the other hand, I ordered the War Mammoth today so I should get that hopefully by the end of next week. They are doing order tomorrow and said it takes between 3-10 days so we will see. Im going to try and get the dragon finished before than. Luckily it doesnt have a whole lot, Ive got some green to finish on the arms, the tail, and the wings. Some highlights on the blue, the claws and what not. The actual glueing and filling/greenstuff work of the pieces and then painting those things... Then Its pretty much done. Still deciding on skin color for the mamoth. The fur will definitely be black, the armor will be red and I think Im going to be doing the skin a brown since all my mounts have brown skin. ATM Im going for a FW model for every chaos god. The dragon is Tzeentch, the Giant Spined is Nurgle, the red armor on the mammoth shall maketh it Khorne, and when I order the Giant Spawn it will be a pink or puple for Slaanesh. I was really close to also ordering the Giant Spawn today but I decided Ill wait till after I finish the mammoth. I dont want to get too ahead of myself (Ive already got way too much unpainted stuff)
Anyhow... will post current pics, tomorrow!

Thank you So I worked more on the Dragon today... Painted the greenstuffed wing gap and O.o its still not really pretty but unless you look upclose to it you cant really tell so thats ok... I started on the other wing and wow... the gap was like 1/4 the size of the other wing so that made it really easy... also did the tail and that was easy too so those shouldnt come out too bad.
(assuming the mammoth doesnt arrive tomorrow) I will go ahead and paint those tomorrow and start on the heads and post pictures for sure. Sorry to keep the pictures of my terrible greenstuff work waiting... I will eventually go back and fix it when I get better at it but for now it will do.
I never really mentioned this, but a few weeks ago while I was painting the dragon at my local GW, I started talking to another person there who does commision work for painting (and building I assume) models and he mentioned how terribly casted the dragon is. So apparently it wasnt just my dragon that didnt line up and was just a bad cast over all but all of them. He said he had done two (well one of them he ended up not doing) so that was interesting to hear about. Amazing model regardless, just poor quality.
On the other hand I saw a Mammoth at Bazaar Bazaar and that model didnt seem to have a bad cast what so ever and should even be relitively easy to put together... Will probably go with a snow themed base with it to fit my khorne army...probably do it like I did with the spawn... Do to thinking about this It occured to me that my dragons base is quite off in terms of my army... So I suppose all I can say is the powers of Tzeentch is drifting about the dragon and warping the earth around it into a molten wasteland... sounds fluffy enough to me

Ok so heres the full body progress... you can see I have started GS work on the right head... Everything is glued in now and after GS is done I can finish painting... I am always saying how Im going to work hard and finish next week or over the break or etc etc... so Im not going to this time Ill get it done when I get it done... while its comming together ok, it still needs alot of work... C&C welcome... sorry for the bad pics.
Look at that tiny little chaos warrior down there >.< How cute. I dont think that tail is long enough by the way... and the wings definitely arent big enough
In this last picture you can see a lighter blue strip between wing and body.... thats how badly this model came... that was literally the size of the game... and dont worry the blue isnt done yet in that spot >.<

O.o Sorry about not responding... I hadnt noticed anyone commented... What details are you specifically talking about Rose_Mountainz? Theres still quite a few I need to do of coarse and the pictures dont show alot of them... that plus bad lighting makes it hard to see... On the next picture Ill try to get better lighting and do some close ups... however my mammoth should finally arrive tomorrow so I might be a little occupied with that for a while O.o

Well then, I am sorry for not updating for so long, over 5 months now. I kind of got caught up in painting my army for some tournies and other stuff, got my FW Mammoth which was my main work for a while, and also started Hordes so thats been keeping my busy. But I am finally back to finish this bad boy as well as my Forge World War Mammoth(whos thread I shall also update) and my Giant Chaos Spawn. So, Hopefully sometime during the weak I will give an actualy update on the Dragon/Mammoth! In the meantime, here is a shot of my WIP WoC army thats been keeping me so busy... and a close up shot of the dragon.
Sorry for the picture being so far away, kind of hard to make out certain things, but hell, it makes a good comparison shot for the FW Stuff
Sorry for the picture being out of focus, Ill need to make a bigger picture box to use for this guy lol, he wont fit in the one I normally use for other stuff >.>
If you havent seen the thread on my War Mammoth, make sure to go check it out, as I plan to be updating it during the week too!
