This is my first post here, and I am working on an imperial guard army, with minimal conversions, just switched the helmet. Some of my leaders and veterans will be converted a little more. Anyway I can not find a color scheme that I like to save my life. I have been bouncing around different ideas for months now, and I could really use some help. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I kind of like the red, but am not married to the idea. Thanks for the help. Here are some pics of what I have so far.

i say that you go for a darker color, maybe black with some extreme highlights. Lots of gunmetal and silver. hope that helps

Out of all the guys in your first picture, the guy on the far right looks the best (brown cloth, red armor).
If you wanted to go with a bit more color contrast, try a slightly lighter brown cloth, black armor, and red shoulders.

I'll second that vote for the Brown with Red armor. The contrast between the red and white seems abit much, unless thats what your going for. The Red on brown looks more right...

Welcome aboard. I know the pain of picking a colour scheme for the Guard all too well!

I agree. Personally I wouldn't go with a Red/ Brown combination, especially one as dark as the one above.
As a suggestion, because you're fond of the red, you could go with the fourth option but paint the uniforms a deeper, darker red. Maybe Scab or Red Gore.
Then go with black or maybe even a metalic for the armour. Of course you might want to avoid brass so they don't accidentally end up looking too Khornate.
Do you prefer lighter colours, darker? What sort of environments do you see your IG fighting in? Would be weird for an ice world army to be bright red, imo.

The nice thing about brown Guard is that it's a relatively easy, "realistic" scheme, and the red adds a nice bit of visual punch to the unit without being overly obnoxious, given that brown contains some red tones already. Add some black and metallic for contrast, and you're done. The white, OTOH, just doesn't work well for Guard, even as a contrast, but make it a bone or grey, and it's not too bad for armor. White is more of a Marine or Eldar color.

It's not bad, but are you Canadian? If you're doing something RCMP-inspired, are you going for more of a "dress" uniform, or combat uniform? Is your army more of a planteary police force?
Anyhow, I think your previous version looked better.
npeircemitch wrote:They will most likely be in snow because my eldar army is based in snow, but that is not necessarily where they are from.
If it's a snow / winter theme, then you'll want an all-white over-jacket, at a minimum; possibly white pants, too, and the armor would white-wash. The problem with winter schemes is that they wash out because they're so heavily white.
Conversion-wise, you're in for a lot of work, as you'll want longcoats and covers for everything, and that doesn't seem to be where you're going with the army look.
I'd strongly avoid winter if I could.
Based on your models, you're doing more of a fall seasonal scheme, with browns and reds. It's a good color basis, and is close in theme to the winter you're using for your Eldar. I'd suggest a bit less red, so that the red that stays stands out more. Use the red (with yellow) for USMC-style sergeant & command insignia / detailing.

Neat conversions. I like the commander, reminds me of mine. I too used the sniper cloak and power fist.
About the paint scheme. I was thinking of having a similiar scheme, with red armour, some months ago.
Here's a rough discription of how it looked like:
Red Gore armour
Bleached Bone helmet
Codex Grey fatigues
Chaos Black + Boltgun Metal weapon(s)
It actually looked pretty good, but I thought red was a too bright colour for guards, it seemed more Eldar-y to me.
But if you use a darker colour, it might look good.
Just sharing my thoughts.

Yes they are, but I actually cut the helmet off the bretonnian heads and the guard heads, and used the bottom half of the guard head with the top of the bretonnian helmet. The guard heads are a lot wider and I think work better with the model. They have that padding on the side as well.

Ya, I am leaning that way as well. I also want to try and give him a pistol in that front hand, to see what that looks like, I just need to find a left hand gun grip. They all appear to be right handed.

So I decided to go with the chainsword in the off hand of the veteran leader, after searching without success through all my bits for a left handed pistol grip. Also finished and ready to paint is my command squad, that will be up after the veterans.

I really like this idea, and I will try it out. I'll put a picture up on the sight and see what everyone's opinion is. The heads are definitely rougher than the uniform.
Einherjar wrote:Ya your vets look pretty great, are you going to go with the same red for vehicles
That is a really good question, and I am torn between going with the red for the tanks, or black with gold highlights. I would really like to hear some more opinions on this because I am going back and forth. I might try and work a couple of images up in photoshop, but I am not very good at it. It also really needs to be compared to the troops. Again any input would be helpful. Fortunately I need to finish a few more footsloggers before I make the final decision.

This is epic - these guys look fancy, but hard. For the tanks - black with gold & red bits. Bright red tanks look great, but can be difficult to pull off (ive tried!). Also, recommend the brown wash for some serious depth in the clothes - ive used it on some of my Khorne Zerkers, and really liked the effect. http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/43342-Zerker%2C%20Red%20Stage.html for the example I put on my gallery. Post by: darkkt
Glad you liked it (although its rated a 1 paintjob and 1 coolness, so you may be the only one!).
I did a base coat Mechrite Red, then a devlan mud wash (which is indeed golddust mixed with pixie dust mixed with equal parts awesome and win), then I did a blood red drybrush (heavy), and topped it off with a baal red wash to blend it all together.
Note that I did this as a base coat so you may want to do your red jackets first (its a bit messy with the drybrushing), then do your pants and faces.
Its a few steps, but Im so happy with the effect I'm going to use it for the rest of my Zerkers.

I went with a few coats of red, orange, and built up to white on the plasma cannons. I am not sold on them, and if anyone else has a better way let me know. I may just need to blend it a little better.

An all-red tank is more Space Marines.
Go with what you've got, but maybe limit the red and yellow to the sidepod immediately above the forward compensator?
This lets you paint the ID colors on both sides of the tank for army coherency, while not having overly large colored bits that don't match easily tank to tank.

I think I am going to keep the paint scheme on the baneblade pretty similar, maybe a little bit more gold, but it will stand out on its own so we will see.
The sergeant is in a unit with 3 plasma guns, and that has been working very well, so the power fist is not really necessary but I may in the future. Right now he is just weapon and pistol.

These are some pics of all the tanks lined up.

I was also thinking about doing a red color scheme, but I didn't have enough at the time, so I switched to black and gray. Too lazy to go to the store

So here is my idea for a second veterans squad. I am going to give the unit flamers, and I am going for a police force, riot control look. I haven't cleaned up any of the conversions yet, but let me know what you think, if you think it works. I tried the skull mask (necron head) a couple different ways and this is my favorite so far. Catachan legs, bretonian men at arms shield, weapon is from dark elf cold ones, hand from empire great swords.

Or this? Sorry for the crappy photo editing. The idea here is leave the helmet the same, and put the mask just over the face.

Last idea, I am thinking a small brim over top, almost like a lacrosse helmet, with the skull as the mask. I would make it out of plasticard and clean up the lines, work it into the helmet. The benefit of this idea would be to keep the top of the skull, which I like.

I'm in favor of keeping the wide brim hats so that the unit looks more like the rest of the army. Since you are using Catachan legs (which don't have the tunic) for this squad, it already looks very different from the mountie theme. Going with a Cadian style helmet just increases the dissonance in theme.

Post by: Rose_Mountainz
Looks good, I agree about using the same helmets. If you are going to have a CC weapon in the arm don'r forget to model a lasgun slung on the back or someting, just so you actually model the gun on him, or you'll maybe have questions about equipment.
Cheers

Modeled up one with the brim, my friends voted for this way. I am a little worried about fitting in with the rest of the army, but I think it will be ok with a similar paint scheme. My other veteran unit works without the helmets, but we will see. Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh and yes I will get a lasgun on his back, thanks

Your army is coming together nicely. I can't help but notice though that the colors, weaponry, and hairstyles of your force greatly resemble those used in many traitor guard armies.
Maybe it's just the red, black, and gold...

Not at all. That torso is from the empire greatswords box, and it comes with two chest plates with that cross on it. The rest of the squad has other chest plates from that set.

Very nice mix of Empire and Cadian bits! They have a very nice distinct flavor to them that I think guard armies benefit so well from. I'm quite fond of the color scheme as well, definitely identifies strongly with the uniform style.

As a Canadian and a fellow IG enthusiast (though still very new), I can say only that I am very impressed. The colour scheme actually works very well on its own, and the theme that it's taken on makes it all the better! Really cool stuff, plenty of creativity.
And yes, Tim's is a national institution, now back to being a Canadian business after widespread outcry from the populace (also apparently for reasons of taxation)!

Get out of my head. I totally had the dog bodyguard idea a month ago. Was planning on using models for 2 german shepherds I have. Going to try to sculpt some k9 body armor on them with a built in laspistol/lasgun. Perhaps have the gun wired into the dog's heads for targeting.
I mean hell, if the imperium will spend resources to put implants in Ogryn, I see no reason why a regimental commander couldn't make such arrangements for his loyal hounds. Besides, german shepherds are arguably at least twice as intelligent as the average ogryn.

Thanks for the comments everyone! I just put together a hellhound and a third chimera, I will try to get some pics up of the hellhound, it really is a sweet model. The next thing I am going to try and paint will be another infantry squad, but I will be back to work tomorrow so we will see when I can find the time.
20347
Post by: npeircemitch
Here are a couple pics of the hellhound. I really like the model, it is even cooler than I thought from the picture, the back is pretty awesome. Also the front nozzle just plugs in to change the type of tank, which is very cool. It just needed a little but of sticky tack to hold it in really well. I also started work on the 2nd infantry squad, and here is the progress so far.
I have also been thinking about the commander, and I may make the outside of his cloak white, with some red decal or gilding. I think that will make him stand out even more.
I really want to paint the priest that I put up on the first page or second page, and I can't decide if I should paint black robes with red armour, more like the rest of the force, or red robes with gold armour and really have him stand out.
Any thoughts on the general or priest would be much appreciated. Automatically Appended Next Post: The priest is on the first page, about 3/4 of the way down.

i think red robes with gold armour, make the priest stand out, you need commissars, priests, etc to stand out because the usually don't come from the same world (commissars definently, not too sure about priests) so yes make him stand out.
The General also IMHO, needs to stand out, ok yes he has to dogs as bodyguards (pure win) but i think that Imperial Guard Officers need to be easy to spot out from the horde of grunts...er i mean guardsmen....
the way i think of the commander/general/whatever rank he is, needs to show off to his troopers, so make him stand out as well.
sorry if i rambled on there.

Problem with colouring Commissars differently (Priests not so much) is that they have a set uniform from the Commissariat as far as the fluff goes. i don't think he'll have any trouble finding them among the bunch though. They do stand out quite a bit just by pose alone. And he's doing his general with 'smart' in mind. If he looks like the grunts, he's less likely to get shot at by the enemy

I wasn't saying paint any commissars using a different colour scheme, i was using them as an example of sticking out among the horde of guardsmen, i didn't word it properly. sorry, my bad for any confussion. not that im saying the OP needs to add commissar's into the army. it is the OP's choice. i was only using them as an example of people sticking out in the crowd.

Shorten the staff. can we have a conparison of psyker next to normal guard for scale because at the momnet he seems to short...

Yes I will work on a comparison picture, ha ha but the ex just took her camera back so I will have to find another camera. And I would tend to agree that the staff should be shorter. His shoulders are about waist high on a normal guardsmen, with his head and hat falling right in the middle of the breast plate. He may be a little short, but he is supposed to be hunched over. I can extend the legs a bit to increase the height.

Holding an Orb, his Psyche-Focusing Item, through which he channels his Power and sees through the Gap in Time, into the Immaterium and the Daemon World.
Reaching Out, either to a Person, or to steady himself on something.
Holding a Short Sword or Knife, attempting to defend himself in battle. Ideally, it would be angled forwards, in a skewering motion.

It is not really a tournament army, I just pick the models I think look the coolest and try to use them. I don't go to deep into the fluff or background though
As far as the sash goes, I think I an going to make the hilt of the sword gold, and hopefully that will make the sash pop a little more. I will add some highlights as well. I agree though
The hand for the dread is from the old metal eldar wraithlord
I like your ideas, I think I am going to go with some empty hands and some holding weapons. It will be the psyker squad, so I think the orb would make some stand out from others, but I may give it a try.
I am actually working on converting some ogres now, but I haven't gotten to far with them. I will try to get some posts up. I am not sure about the guns either, I was going to use heavy bolters but I need to think of how to convert them a little.
Ya there are definitely some good hands in the empire wizard set, I am actually going to pick that up to convert the primaris psyker, so I will be able to use the bits.
Ha Ha thanks flinty, but that would just be unfair to my opponent. And what could he even count as? Maybe Marbo, but I have used Marbo, and he doesn't kick as much ass in close combat as the Cardboard Tube Samurai would. does. is awesome.
Again, thank you everyone, I think I answered all your questions. And I will try to keep the pics coming. They will be a little mored spaced out for now as I need to borrow a camera whenever I want to take a pic.

Ok, here are some more pics. Nothing painted, but some things I have been working on. First is the platoon commander with his sword hilt gold. I think it helps make the sash stand out a bit more. Next is a comparison of the psyker and a normal guardsmen. Finally are some pics of my first ogryn. I want to modify the heavy bolter a bit, but I think it can stay close cause they are pretty similar guns. 3 shots, strength five. I like how it looks. Some of them will have helmets like the rest of the army.

Oh and also I have been working on the command squad, I want to switch it up a bit, and use it as close combat, cause I think it is cooler. the guy with the sword will be a member of that squad. The phone line is larger than life, but it is hard to see from tabletop, so I went with a little bigger cable than it would actually be. Also after looking at the close up pics, I need to have more blood underneath the gauze pad, since the guy on the ground is supposed to be injured. Right now it looks like the guys hand is bleeding. I am not sure quite yet what I want them to count as, I have just used him as basic without the eviscerator, but I do want to try it. I may also get the other priest holding the big hammer, and that will be an eviscerator probably. I am thinking I may make a cart for all of the weapons the command squad is missing.

20347
Post by: npeircemitch
I kind of like the staggered markings, with the left side having the markings up on the turrett, and the right being on the bottom. I may play with them later, but for now I am trying to get more things painted. I have been crazy busy, but have worked on a little terrain, I will try to get some pics up. Until I get a little more done, here are some eldar pics. My converted autarch, converted wraithlord, and avatar. You can check out more at my army profile, the bunky eldar

Let me know what you think, these are the first scheme

You have gone for a similer colour system to me. Check out my thread here http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/316909.page
Might help you with some ways to easily get some nice result on your tanks.
Hope it helps.

Ok, so it has been awhile, and I don't have much to post unfortunately, things have been crazy. I think I am going to stick with the original color scheme on the new flamer vets. I also just purchased the imperial city, and I am pretty psyched about that. My friends and I are going to try and start a map campaign next month, so hopefully I will have it ready by then, but we will see.
So here is what I have done since last post. I started to model a few more of the vets, the ones who will have flamers. I like the heavy flamer model, I think he will look pretty good. I also have started painting some of my grey knights terminators. The first one is without flash, second one with flash. They are not great pics, sorry.

Thanks rose mountainz, its been nice to make progress. As little time as I have it feels good to sit down and get some paint on models. Here is my progress on the grey knights terminator. These models are just amazing. Pic quality is not as good, its on the iphone since my ex took her nice camera back. Oh well.
Also I hope to be starting a campaign soon with my eldar, so I may be dedicating some time to building some eldar and terrain, I will try and get some pics up.

Post by: npeircemitch
Thanks for all the comments! I really took my time on the grey knight, and I am excited to get to the rest of them. I just love the way they look.
I think my paint scheme for the raider is going to tie into my eldar army, which you can see here - http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/The%20Bunky%20Eldar, but I am not sure how. I am planning on mixing the two, and using mostly eldar models while using the dark eldar codex. I really like the hellions and incubi, but I think the rest will be counts as eldar models. I have shaved or left off as much of the spiky bits as possible to prevent it from clashing, and I am thinking I will use eldar heads on the ships crewmen/women.
Which leads me to your actual question, color scheme. I was thinking dark green might look good, and tie into my eldar, but I am not sure. I do not like the main colors in the codex, and I am worried it may look like that. I think blue like my eldar would be to bright, but maybe a dark blue. I think using orange highlights for tattoos and decals would look pretty good. But I am very undecided, so any comments/ suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

So it has been quite awhile. I just bought a house, which is my excuse for doing nothing related to warhammer for a couple months. The work is beginning to slow down, and I took a day off from painting walls to paint some figures a few days ago, so hopefully I will get some pics up here shortly. This army is still going strong though, and I will be back working on it as soon as possible. Sorry to everyone for the delay

Here are some pics of the game I was able to play over Christmas against my brother. I used 2000 points of imperial guard, with Straken, and he used a 2000 point space wolf Logan wing list. It was a great game, and he ended up winning when it ended on the fifth turn. We were playing objectives, and I went for the win and tried to charge his lone terminator on the objective with 20 or so guardsmen, but was just out of range. I did find out that I really like using scout sentinals coming in on the flank with scatter lasers. They can cause some damage, so I am going to paint a couple up. Plus I really love the sentinal models.

20347
Post by: npeircemitch
And a few more. I wanted a pic of my general's unit on the board, and since it only lasted one turn after they got spanked by Logan and I forgot to use my banner to reroll their moral check, this is about the only time they were on the table. Also the lone terminator with guardsmen bearing down.
I should get some pics up soon of the meltagun vet squad I have been working on, as well as some progress on the next GK Terminator

Ok, here is my idea for my meltagun vet squad. Cadian bodies and legs with bare arms. Also no helmet, with the rebreather. I need to get the positioning on the rebreather right, i am not totally sure its in the correct position. The arms have so far been from the Catachan command squad, the troops arms just look ridiculous.

Ok, its been awhile since my last post, but I have made progress when possible. I am almost finished the second vet squad with flamers, and will post pics hopefully sometime in the next couple days. Post by: npeircemitch
And just in case I have not mentioned before, they are a vet squad with two flamers and a heavy flamer, and shotguns.
The legs are from the catachan box set, and some from the catachan command, like the kneeling legs.
The torso and arms are from the cadians, with the torso cut off right above the belt.
The shields are from the bretonnian men at arms, and are cut off and green stuffed to the top half of a cadian arm.
The shotguns are from space marine scouts, and I filed down the hands a little so they would not look too big.
The head is a cadian head with the face and front of the helmet filed off, and the face of a necron cut and filed down pretty thin. Then I greenstuffed a brim over top of the necron face.
The powerfist is from the catachan command squad, cut off and glued to a cadian arm.

the guys with the rebreathers are great , can i ask where the heads are from , especially the viking looking one , i am thinking space wolves , but not sure. also are the rebreathers from forgeworld mate. necro heads look kinda scary , but look like the need some depth , maybe a wash . Also have you thought about cutting off the lower jaw so they are not so long ? and give that 40k skull vibe.

I used the closed cab for my scout sentinels as well, means I can use them as either if needed. Really liking the army, I love the idea of taking something very real worldly and putting it into the 40k universe. And tbh I can see an entire planet full of these guys
20347

Thanks for the comments!
The rebreathers are actually from the cadian command squad, you get 5 on each sprue.
The mustachioed head is I believe from the cadian command squad, and the other two heads are from the catachan command squad. they may in fact all be from the catachan command squad, I cannot quite remember.
I may fix up the necron masks down the road, but I won't work on them at least until I get the rest of the army finished. I am not really sure how I would go about cutting them down and them still looking good, so I have been hesitant.
Also as far as the paint goes, it is difficult to tell from the pictures because of the flash, but the masks have been brought up from a gray with 3 layers of white, I will try and get a picture with better lighting at some point, but they may still need some work, I am not sure.
As far as progress goes, I have started on the chimera's for my vet squads, so hopefully I can finish them up in the next week and get some pics up. I have vacation in a week also, so I hope to get the army to at least 1500 points over that break. All I need to get there is the two chimeras, one more sentinel, and another priest and a commissar.
Again, love any comments and constructive criticism, I am always looking to improve, so thanks again everyone!

Ok, I was finally able to get to some painting over easter break. Here is my second chimera, this will be for one of the vet squads. The first chimera with the gold stripe will be for the command squad. I notice after the pics i have some clean-up to do on the one side with the chain hanging on it, I will fix that up next time I get out the paints. I hope to finish the third chimera in the next couple days and get some pics of that up as well. So close to 1500 points!

I am not totally sure on what I will do with his left hand, so if anyone has any ideas that would be great.
