In Soviet Imperial Guard, Models build you!

Love those Ak-47's they got. They look great man.

I really like the idea behind the army, although you might want to push the Soviet angle a little stronger. Perhaps a red star on the shoulderpads? Right now the regular troopers just look like the pretty standard Cadian/Pig Iron head combo, aside from their pretty rad AK-47s.

Soviet IG @ 2009/12/03 11:54:49

Nice Spetznaz veterans too. This actually looks good so far.

Really nice. How did you accomplish the bases? is it a molded plastic card of the top?

Soviet IG @ 2009/12/03 14:49:35

Post by: Empchild

looking good, but I agree to push the russian idea a little further. Also you may want to clean up the lower part of the bases that you have painted black as they are atm with some of the grey on them.

Love them, especially the Guardsman taking a sneaky swig from his hip-flask. Just wondering though, what do the blue berets mean? Are they Veterans or some other sort of elite troop?

hey thanks all for the comments. yeah still have to clean the bases i known. Did soviet troops run around with red stars on the there shoulders in real life?? not likerly . The blue berets are airborne marines there my veterans packing ak74 with GLA. the bases are from forgecraft.

The blue berets designate that they're Spetsnaz (Or... Vets. I guess.)

I agree that they need more Soviet-ification, though they look prime nonetheless. Just popping a Red star on one shoulder, or painting one Shoulderpad red and freehanding some communist-esque symbol in yellow would work good too

If I might make a request: A Senior Officer with a Fur Hat

Yeah, I second this and put the soviet logo on a few pieces.

Sky blue — Russian Airborne Troops (VDV)
Black — Marines, Special Militia Units (OMON)
Dark green — Special Units of FSB Border Troops
Rust red — Special Units of Interior Ministry Troops (MVD) — there is a special exam for wearing this beret
Orange — Search and Rescue and Emergency Ministry troops (EMERCOM)
Cornflower blue — Federal Protection Service (FSO)
Camouflage — non-regulation, but often seen at the Red Square parades

the models look great! The Fritz helm looks a bit off with "soviets" but that is a minor complaint, and only something you notice when looking closely.

Where did you get the Ak74s?

Have a commissar made up with a head swap bit of dremeling and walaa, As for valhallans probly wont as all my troops are in NBC gear and valhallans look to ww2 and very cliche' i want different. The ak's are from the assault group. Will be doing ratlings with ghillie suits and SVD's

you might want to turn the commisar's head to look where the gun is pointing.

Thanks for letting me know where the AKs came from, I wondered how well the TAG guns would work with IG.

I'm not sure how experienced you are with an airbrush, but if you don't mask off areas then you can get a smooth blend on the edges of your camo with no effort at all- the airbrush does it naturally. This gives it (IMO) a more natural camo scheme.
Anyway; the weathering on the WiP Shadowsword is looking very effective- keep it up!

Lextheimpaler wrote:I have 0 exp with an airbrush. Just following the FW masterclass book and they said to mask so i did.

Nah. You've got the right idea, just maybe a bit clunky execution.

It LOOKS like you're using fairly thick and wide masking tape, but I can't really tell. If so--a smaller tape might help out quite a bit and allow for more intricate designs. There's also liquid mask(Abteilung makes one, there's a bunch though. www.squadron.com has stuff like that, which isn't generally found on most wargaming retailer sites.)

The other thing to remember is that, if you need to, you can just remask the camo areas and then put on a fresh coat of the original color of the tank to tidy it up.

Looking good. Didn't see a comment on it (may have missed it), but I'd drill out the barrels on the grenade launchers and auto-cannons. The troopers are fine, but when the barrel diameter is that large, a flat, capped tip really throws off the look. Generally, I like it.

Soviet IG @ 2010/01/27 20:13:42

Post by: Rebel

Well it makes sense that everybody have gas masks, but the leaders lack personality. It's like with space marines and eldar. All of them have helmets except some awesome, badass HQ for example: patriarchs, chapter masters, sargents, some autarchs. You could give your commanders and some troopers normal heads and attach gas masks next to them or somewhere else like on the belts. This would give some variation. Anyway do whatever you want. It's your army, a very nice one though.

Soviet IG @ 2010/01/27 21:40:37

Great Job! I'm a big fan of unique IG armies, and am also working on a Pig-Iron+ cadian army.

If you make any other comissar's, may I suggest sourcing one of the plastic imperial squad leader heads from the warzone plastics (still available from prince august) They are a bit higher than the Pig Iron hats, and have a nice skull emblem on the front.

Other than that, ace job here. The canteen-siping figure is a great addition and your shadowsword is well worn in the best way.

I quite like the Commissar he's looking as if he's gesturing to his men rather than directly shooting "3rd squad charge that Carnifex etc...." Those miniatures look really impressive, i worry though that there scale may be off as they look really ganglie. I once purchased some infinity modles on advice about scale lol and they look like little children compared to the rest of my army. As for snipers i just need to buy a box of cadians to convert. I have a box of SVD's for them so they shouldn't be far away.

I like a lot. You've goven thought to the roles of your tanks and applied that in the colour scheme, not a lot of guys do that.

Good job

how about some converted stormtroopers or cadians. and maybe some like special pathfinder guys using elysians?

Yeah saw the new manticore kit today looks so god will suit my coldwar theme very well. Im thinking about some storm trooper atm, arming them all with PKM machine guns to count as hot shot las guns. Still waiting on my cadians to convert to ratlings using svd sniper rifles. Also in the works is some power armour count as orgyns. So theres a bit to get underway still. And then come july there will be air power, in the form of a maruader destroyer.

I do sincerly hope that those Stormtroopers are painted in the Spetznatz Flora camo.

Awesome army you have going here LexImpaler! Those Pig Iron heads always look great on guardsmen (I think that's why they made them! ), and I'm particularly fond of the overall Soviet feel you've achieved. The camo coupled with the worn appearance (it is Soviet equipment after all!) came out beautifully! With my French trench-themed army, we could whoop up on some German Death Korps! It'll be WWII Redux!

Except they're late-era Soviet troops...

And the French didn't do much whooping in WWII

And the Kreig are more like WWI German Soldiers than those in WWII...

BUT OTHER THAN THAT...

I just thought it would make for an interesting game. I know Krieg is WWI-esque, and Russian soldiers looked more similar to Vahallans as far as GW ranges are concerned. But still, I was more focused on the origins than anything else

I hear what your saying. Two well themed and nicely painted armies always makes for a nice game. Nothing worse than playing an army that has been givin no love.

Had the day off today so whilst watching the intire series of "Hitlers Bodyguards" i got some painting done. Just need to add decals and weathering to the valk and pigments to the tanks then im set.

The fence on the base of the valk is a nice touch, I assume thats just sprue and wire you used? Might have to "borrow" that idea...

Was that seller on ebay? I almost bought some of them myself. I ended up using Leman Russ side sponsons and TL lascannons from unused dreadnought arms instead, and it looked ok.
