Well?
What models have lead to awkward, if funny as feth, moments.
(And please, I don't want 1001 references to a certain Slaanesh Soul Grinder)
Try to keep it non-descripit. Not too much detail, thank you.
Personal Favourite:
The other day at our FLGS we were looking at some Aussalt Marines that my mate was interested in selling. They had only been painted black, and a single marine had a plasma pistol, who's grid was painted white.
Me: Wow, I like the powerfist on the sergeant. And you got these only for $20?
Mate: Yeah, but there is only 1 plasma pistol in the squad. But they manage.
*points white plasma guy out*
Other Mate: Oh yeah. I bet that guy just loves to shoot his gushing, warm white glue all over the enemy...
*awkward silence*

We loled.

The Giant at my local GW Slanneshi with a Gimp mask on and a massive eyeball in his belly made me go oooooooh mmmmmkay...
he even had a gag ball.......Apparently the staffer who made the giant for his store Beastmen army was told that unless on games night he couldnt use it..

Well, not really funny, so much as "what the hell were you thinking!?"
A youngling thought it would be a good idea to scratchbuild/kitbash an ork trukk or two, which we thought was pretty respectable. He showed up to our open gaming day with ww2 armored cars covered in (still sharp) hobby knife blades. One of the older club members walked up behind him, took them from him, and snapped off all the blades before handing them back to him in two seperate piles and leaving him with the comment that "intelligence must have skipped a generation in your family".

There was a fully assembled UltraMarine Chapter Assembeled along with 3 companys of grey knights.
then this one guy brings in a army of Cow Marines!
Another Guy Brought a company of Impaient Marines!
another guy brought slaneesh daemontees.
I brought in all my models and i looked at their armies with Awee then this veteran comes in with some of the funniest Space Marines ever to live the poof patrol! His marines had marshmallow power weapons. hmmm Rainbow POWER!
let see what the colors where Green, Blue, Gray, Red, White, Brown, Yellow, Pink, and Orange....... the entire store now calls that gathering Space Marines taste the Rainbow Crusade. Best Day ever!
Then my most funniest model is a marine holding out a pistol to his head a power weapon on the ground. On his face is a tear and next to his hand is a cell phone. Wow Break-up is always the hardest too take.

A friend of mine (to whom I mean no offense) had an army of Space Marines. Mind you, these were his first models, and he didn't exactly have a chosen paint scheme yet. In essence, he ran an army of yellow red blue white marines, or as we called them, the LEGO marines (they were so brightly colored)

I once played a game of Warhammer Fantasy against a guy who had cunningly modeled his spider riders to resembled piles of random pieces of plain pewter. Strangely enough, he somehow believed (And I believe that it was a personal superstition of his...) that they would only be successful in battle if he constantly mumbled excuses whenever he pushed their crumbly bulk across the battlefield. I targeted them with all the shooting my Wood Elves could muster, which at the time was quite a damned bit, and slaughtered them, to save him further embarrassment.

Um, no. If you built something stupid, I feel confident I wouldn't destroy it or ban you from the FLGS. However, if I built something deemed as "stupid" and you broke it or did anything to it, rest assured I'd punch you. Would you throw CoD terrain in the trash? I mean... Those spikes... Whew. TSA would wand you in no time if you took those NEAR an airport!
The kid had a good thought. Orks are orks and like sharp things to impale their enemies on as they drive. The fact that he even tried to model some trukks and go off the beaten path is admirable and doesn't need a tact-virgin douche to destroy them. A simple "I don't think it'd be good to play with those, sorry" would have been just fine.

A friend at my local GW (Who's name I'm not mentioning to save an eternal lifetime of embarrassment) wasn't/isn't that good at waiting for things to dry.
This resulted in his entire chaos space marine and ork army to have their arms glued on at the ankles, or somewhere on the leg due to them slipping off. He even stuck Ghazgull's claw to the model's foot and I think he still hasn't repaired them.....

There once was a Black and White Space Marine on a Black and White bike, and being the hero type person he was, wanted to marry the Chapter Master's daughter.
So he went up to the palace and the guard naturally enquired "Who goes there?", to which he replied "I'm the Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike and I want to marry the commander's daughter".
"Not *the* Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike?" asked the guard, with a not unconsiderable amount of awe in his voice.
"Yes, I'm *the* Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike."
"OK, pass."
So the Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike proceeded up to the commander's chamber.
"Who goes there?" Asked the commander.
"I'm the Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike and I want to marry your daughter," replied the Black and White Space Marine.
"Not *the* Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike?"
"Yes, *the* Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike."
"OK, if you complete three tasks, you may take my daughter's hand in marriage."
The commander told the Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike. "Your first task is to slay the dragon on Xylon III."
On his way out the guard once again asked "Who goes there?", to which he replied
"I'm the Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike and I want to marry the commander's daughter."
"Not *the* Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike?"
"Yes, *the* Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike."
"OK, pass."
The Black and White Space Marine then proceeded with ease to kill the dragon and six months later returned with the head of the foul beast.
On his way into the palace the guard enquired "who goes there?", to which he replied
"I'm the Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike and I want to marry the commander's daughter".
"Not *the* Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike?"
"Yes, *the* Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike."

So the Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike proceeded up to the commander's chamber.
"Who goes there?" Asked the commander.
"I'm the Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike and I want to marry your daughter" Replied the Black and White Space Marine.
"Not *the* Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike?"
"Yes,*the* Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike."
"OK, if you complete three tasks, you may take my daughter's hand in marriage" The commander told the Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike. "Your second task is to climb the highest peak on Desgrus Beta".
On his way out the guard once again asked "Who goes there"?", to which he replied
"I'm the Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike and I want to marry the commander's daughter".
"Not *the* Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike?"
"Yes, *the* Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike."
"OK, pass."
The Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike easily climbed the mountain and returned 4 years later.
On his way into the palace the guard enquired "who goes there?", to which he replied
"I'm the Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike and I want to marry the commander's daughter".

"OK, if you complete three tasks, you may take my daughter's hand in marriage" The commander told the Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike. "Your third and final task is to swim across the acid lake outside the palace".
On his way out the guard once again asked "Who goes there"?", to which he replied

"Not *the* Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike?"

I've told this story once, and many have saw it as waaaay over the top, but I'll tell it to the best of my memory again.
So, one night (probably 8:00) a "less than liked" guy walked in, with his Orks I believe it was, I cannot remember for the life of me. Unfortunately, he was a bit more than tipsy at the time.
So he unloaded, and wanted to play my GF in a game, with her Sisters of Battle.
So, he eventually got the charge against one of her S.O.B squads I think it was, with some boyz, and when he rolled to hit (or wound, again, no memory) he rolled ALL 6's, and it was probably 20+ dice.
So, my GF literally said "What the feth, dude?" There was no kids, so it was alright. He promptly replied "Hahaha, they're Orks! What can I say!" I believe.
My GF wasted no time in sending her foot straight to his genitals.
He fell out of the store, and walked to his car, leaving his drunkass army and dumbass dice on the table.
Nothing was filed against my GF, 'nor the store. He came in one day I was told, took his packed up army, said "Sorry' and we never saw him again.
Thats about as accurate as I remember the store.

My friend who plays IG wanted to make a special model for the tank commander guy (forget his name). So now he has a lemun russ with a guy popped out of the hatch. His left arm is a heavy bolter and his right is a giant sentinel chainsaw.
He also has a guardsman that has no arms, but lasguns attached to his shoulders. That soldier is always manning a heavy weapon next to a guy pointing at the enemy with a shovel.

Though I know I am pulling the thread off-topic, I feel I need to explain more.
Yeah, by loaded dice, I mean "LOADED DICE" He gloated about it, and stuck in a few racial swears in there aswell before she took the liberty for her foot to meet his crotch. I don't feel like it was the correct thing to do, but hell, I know my GF well enough to know that telling her off for doing it would have been the worst thing I could have done.
I didn't mention how much of an actual ass this guy was just in the store sober. He cheated regularly when nobody was really around, and is about the highest level of TFG you could possibly get.
I apologize for my distraction to this thread.

Yeah, see, mentioning that the dice were loaded is the sort of information that would have made the original story make more sense, and seem less like your GF is prone to random acts of violence just because her opponent makes a lucky roll...
Wouldn't have made it any more on-topic for the thread, though.

Anyways, I owe this thread a contribution.
For me, the one model I've always hated seeing on the table is Pedro Kantor ( I see someone above me likes him). His Storm Bolter always seems to do something amazing every game, such as wound Marneus Calgar 4 times, and him failing all his 2+ saves to it.

I thought it was obvious what the implication was. No one rolls 20 sixes, the odds on that happening are astronomical, 10 dice is 6 million to one (6 to the power 10, I can't use superscript here), so it's somewhat unlikely. 20 dice is a staggering 365 trillion to one against if I counted the zeros correctly, not even the emperor himself could do that.

You noticed that it's already been posted, right...?
To be honest, I never really understood why that joke got so much hype. The original joke (which was about a black and white knight) was only vaguely amusing, and then only if you're mused by jokes that stretch on forever just to slap you in the forehead at the end... changing it to be about a space marine makes no sense at all, and (for me, at least) kills any amusement value it originally had.
So it's not funny, it doesn't make any sense, and yet for many years was this huge in-joke on so many forums. Go figure.

OMG....mandrakes....
Flashback to like 97 or 98 when the DE line was brand new and we didnt have much internet presence to berate figs like we do now. And I pre-ordered some mandrakes because they sounded cool fluff wise- like eldar ninjas.
So, the day comes when they arrive and me and my gamer buds go down to the store- and I get my long awaited mandrakes. Now- at this time I was pretty new to 40k- I didnt know the sculptors by name or who Jervis or Andy chambers was etc etc.
So the first thing I say when I see the mandrake models 'Wow...these suck....its like they hired somebody with one hand to sculpt them...'
The store went silent, and like 12 nerd heads in unison all slowly pivoted to stare at me like I was the biggest reject ever. My freind Mark 'Thats really messed up' and then no one would talk to me.
I was clueless, I was like- no- they really do suck that bad! Look at them!!
So, then like two months later I see the article in a WD with the Perry Brothers detailing the cannon accident and how he lost his hand but was still sculpting- and suddenly that whole awkward incident made alot more sense.
So- for one handed sculpts Mandrakes are pretty awesome... anybody want some? ^_^

Do you work to live,
or live to work?
Do what you love to do when you can, ya never know when you might not be able to. It was just an accident, and a pretty rare one. He probably had a greater risk of losing that arms driving to work than in a cannon accident.

You're right there. Anyways GW should really update the codex and models for DE, i seriously could not believe that DE still only have their 2nd edition codex and old models.
Its like they want to get rid of them without angering people with DE armies. It annoys me a lot, and i'm not a fan

So clever. Maybe look up the % of lost arms/cannon vs auto accidents.
All things considered, even with a mechanical hand he still sculpts better than you or I. He didnt let the accident stop him from doing what he enjoys.

Ah yes, but how many people play with cannon compared to driving to work?
On topic, my friend and I were in the local GW buying paint and I got talking to a redshirt about the imminent nids releases. He said he had a Trygon in store and went to get it. When the guy brought it out it looked terrible. Gappy, badly glued and mangled paint job. Keeping a straight face while telling him it looked good was hard.

Post by: JohnHwangDD
@M/M: if we compare odds, the number of arms lost to driving is negligible - there are millions of people who get in their cars every day, and none of them lose their arms. But the handful of times people play with cannon? yeah, somebody loses an eye (or arm). And as for him sculpting better than me? If I had decided I wanted to be a GW sculptor as my profession, I have no doubt I'd be a better one than him.

I'm still amazed by the quality of the Perry bros.' work. With 3 hands between them they sculpt better than almost anybody I can think of.
And that's 3rd edition DE models and codex! They weren't around in 2nd. Of course I do have models from 2nd edition that are much better sculpts than anything found in the DE range...

Last I checked-looking at all the work they did on the LoTR line, I dont think Michael ruined his 'professions as a GW sculptor' . The Perry's are way into historical arms and armor, its always shown in thier sculpting, as well as thier other non GW work.
And until you are a better sculptor- you're still just making half arsed jibes at a fellow who not only does what he loves- he does it well and over came adversity to keep doing it.
So, you'll spin this around into some passive aggressive retort you think is witty Im sure. But it doesnt really matter- in the end you're trying to mock a guy that lost part of his arm in an accident. You're questioning his judgment for having a hobby with dangerous elements. But the facts are still present that hes successful at what hes doing and enjoys it. So your opinion of 'endangering his livelihood' are sort of hollow.

Its not a meaningless dig- you said you could do it better, but you cant or arent, hence, hollow. And Im not throwing stones, nor do I live in a glass house- I think Im stating my intent quite clearly, although I could use smaller words if necessary.
I have no doubt you are good at things you choose, but belittling someone elses achievements by stating you could do it better, but you dont want to- I think thats the sort of thing anyone could say about anything. And its flawed logic, you have no clue if you'd be as good of a sculptor because you've never done it- you might be technically proficient but lack the art or vice versa. Most livelihoods are endangered by the loss of a hand, I work in a laboratory and would find it pretty hard going with only one arm. Does that mean I should avoid any hobby or activity that has the chance of loosing me an arm even by a freak accident? You'd never go out of the house if you thought like this. It wasn't like he was injured in some extreme sport, it was a historical reinactment event that went wrong. Jeeze, I'm quite suprised by how judgemental some people are being.

Accidents happen to professionals too. You have no idea as to thier level of proficiency- you simply assume amateur because something bad happened. Again, thats flawed logic.
On topic- I saw a conversion of the LoTR Balrog that had clear resin wings and fiber optic inlays that were lighted, so it sparkled/flickered liek it was on fire. I cant seem to find any links to it though- anyone have its youtube link still?

I do know that these aren't professional re-enactor blackpowder specialists out there. Remember - professional means that they actually do it for a living. That's why it's a hobby.
The other thing is that, while pros do have accidents, the simple fact of doing things more times means that they get better and *smarter* at it. That's why I'm OK to ride the ride at Disneyland, running 365 days/yr (risking a freak accident), instead of the traveling holiday carny ride run misc weekends each month (with much more likely accidents to occur).

Yep, I believe it's a Hurn and not a Predator. After all, that's what the seller and creator of the model says it is, so that's what it is.
Just like this Balor is absolutely not a Balrog!
Looks just like a Balrog, doens't it. And yet a slight variation in the name means it's not, so Tolkein and co. can suck it!

Actually, no it doesn't. A Balrog is a flamey rocky monster, whereas the Balor is a classic fleshy demon. See? Non-infringing. There are multiple possible interpretations of "a bat-winged demon with a sword of flame", and the differences between the two are why the Balor isn't a Balrog.

Of course, it's a Hurn. The other alien who has a mouth with mandibles attached to flaps that open out, a bald top of the head, dreadlocks, scattered pieces of armour, wrist blades with two blades per wrist, a telescoping spear weapon, an input panel on the lower arm and a shoulder mounted cannon. Who also likes collecting skulls.

This makes me sad. Have you even read the books? The Balrog was never described as a "flamey rocky monster" it was described as a demon of shadow and flame, wielding a flaming whip and sword. The Balrog that Peter Jackson did is not the Balrog that Tolkein described. This rendition of the Balrog came out long after the inception of the Balor.
Also, it's a well known fact that the Balor of dungeons and dragons was originally called a Balrog; but when Tolkein and Co. heard about it they told them to change it. So they took the easy way out and rather than redesigning the creature, they just changed the name to Balor. Does it infringe? No, it does not. Is it an obvious ripoff of the Balrog, of course it is.
You guys seem to think that I am trying to deny that this model is an obvious Predator ripoff. I'm not daft, of course it is. My only point is that 20th Century Fox can't do jack about it because Heresy Miniatures hasn't recognized it as a property of 20th Century Fox.
If they had released this model as "Predator Headtaker" then Fox would have every right to jump all over them because they have rights to the term "Predator".

You know what the great thing is? That's exactly what Heresy can say. All they have to do is not mention the "P" word and they're safe.

I do that once a month too! Good to see theres other fans of the series out there! I usually watch them in Canon order though (Predator, Predator 2, AVP, AVPR, ALIEN, ALIENS, ALIEN3, ALIEN:RESURRECTION). Thought sometimes I skip A:R...I bloody hate where they took the series after the third installment. They should have ended the Ripley storyline after the 3rd, and took the series in a different direction, rather than continuing with Ripley.
Here's to hoping Predators and the Alien prequel are any good (my hopes are high for the Alien prequel, but with the director of "Spy Kids" doing Predators...I don't know).

See, the problem that I have with that order is that, for me, it just doesn't work to consider the movies actually involved in each other's storylines. They're great series on their own, and AVP is bad-ass, but that's why it exists - to be cool, not to further the story. Hence why we watch them in the order we do.
When AVP comes out we'll have to play online.

Yes I've read the books. Similarion, too. However, the point you're oblivious to is that translating a text description into sculpture is pretty much guaranteed to be non-infringing as long as you don't steal the copyrighted name. I can sculpt a million demons and NONE of them will ever infringe Tolkein as long as I refrain from calling any of them a "Balrog".
Now copying one visual design, that's IP infringement. Which is why the Jackson Balrog *must* look different from the D&D Balor.
D&D stealing JRRT's "Balrpg" is clear IP infringement, and a slam dunk for JRRT, so of course DnD changes.
You seem to think that Fox can only sue over named items. That is false. If it is a true knock-off, with no new features (as here), then Fox would easily win. It's why Heresy is cagey about "events outside their control". Heresy knows they're infringing, and will have to shut down as soon as Fox gets word. Personally, I hope Fox sues Heresy for every penny collected.

Personally, I hope Fox sues Heresy for every penny collected. People have been using the likeness of things from pop culture without consent in everything from miniatures, to TV shows, to comics, etc, etc, etc. Did you see Planet 51? The "dog" in that was obviously modelled after the Alien (hell its name was Ripley), but you didn't see them getting "sued for every penny that film made." I recall there was even an old Looney Toons episode that featured the Alien and Predator. Going back to D&D, how about these (obviously not D&D) miniatures from Reaper: The not-Glabrezu The not-Demogorgon The not-Beholder And my personal favorite, the not-Orcus Believe you me, people have been doing technically illegal cameos and replications of other peoples' IP for years without suffering the dreaded C&D, and to think that one company (especially considering how small scale this one is) is going to get Fox's banhammer from this one case, is incredibly wishful thinking. I will stand by my view that, while their merits are questionable, it's not going to happen. But I suppose you can dream.

Really? Do you know that Tolkien was giving a physical description when he describes it as a demon of shadow and flame? Or was he describing it's personality, describing how it was an evil force? Don't pretend to know what an author means by his words, for that is a fallacy. You may have an opinion as to what he is describing, but you cannot go ahead and use that as a fact.

Let me make a suggestion: before taking up a hostile, flamboyant, and flaming attitude against a complete stranger, perhaps it would be better to look at the context of what I wrote. JohnHwangDD said that the Balrog was a "flamey rocky monster", I simply brought up the description from the book to show that the original vision of the Balrog was not a "flamey rocky monster". What it was exactly, I can't be positive, and I never claimed to, but apparently it was close enough to the Balor's look that Tolkein felt the need to sue D&D.
Unlike what you seem to think, I told him what the Balrog wasn't described as, not what it was.
Personally, I have always viewed the Balrog as looking similar to the Balor, and I think you'll find that most people who've read the books will take the Balrog as a physical manifestation since Gandalf threw him from the top of Zirakzigal and the Balrog "broke the mountain-side where he smote it in his ruin." To me, only a physical being could break a mountain or be physically fought.
JohnHwangDD wrote:@Bob: Whether or not someone gets a C&D or sued doesn't mean that they didn't infringe.
I agree, and I concede to this point.
However, regardless of the fact that he is infringing, thinking that he, out of all the companies that infringe on Fox and other companies' IP, will suffer a lawsuit for this is very much wishful thinking.

To clarify, I was describing how the GW model looked, not quoting from JRRT.
No, JRRT sued because DnD used the copyrighted "Balrog" *name* - the appearance was irrelevant.
In the Hersey DnD examples, the issue is that the models are copying the illustrations in the DnD MM, not basing off the DnD text descriptions.

From what I recall the Balrog is hardly described at all. Whether it even has wings is open to interpretation.
There are two pertinent quotes in the book...
"His enemy halted again, facing him, and the shadow about it reached out like two vast wings."
and later...
"…suddenly it drew itself up to a great height, and its wings were spread from wall to wall…"
You can take it either way, but the earlier quote establishes the wings as being figurative of it's shadow of evil, and the later quote is just referencing this when it is seemingly able to control it's shadow. Or possibly it can shapeshift and the wings solidify as from being merely dark shadows.
I'm of the opinion the wings aren't as literal as has been established in films and models, if it can change shape and produce the wings as needed from the darkness, but in caves/mines it wouldn't need them, and its "wings" are largely figurative/ethereal.

Those models are not by Heresy. They are by Reaper. And where they drew inspirations from (text or pictures) is completely irrelevant. Inspiration was taken from another company's IP, and is therefore illegal. They're still getting away with using someone's IP without reprocutions, which is the point I was trying to make.
I personally don't care, to be perfectly honest, it's no skin off my nose if Fox loses a couple grand because someone did something they should have done in the first place. To be perfectly honest, I doubt that Fox is that worried about it either. However, for the sake of peace, I'm ending this conversation because it's just meaningless, OT spam that obviously is going to never end because of the different views of two opposing parties. Soooooooooooooooooooooo....back on topic.....
This model made me 0_0 the other day when I found there was something that looked suspiciously like a wang underneath its tummy.

Okay, last comment on this topic then I'm done.
I couldn't think of another word for inspiration, but I guess to reword that comment:
"They copied someone elses IP, and therefore it is illegal."
That is what I meant...

A very good example here is Andrea Miniatures, who make 54mm models inspired, among other things, by various movies. Their range has not-Robocop, not-Terminator, not-Clint-Eastwood, not-Mad-Max, and so on. The likenesses are extremely faithful.
If the various movie studios could to go after them, I'm certain they would.

There is no question that the studios *could* do so, but likely that they are unaware.
If it were as easy to report IP violations to Fox as GW, and amply rewarded with "free" movie swag, I'm sure we would see a lot more of this stuff hammered down.

At our last tournament a new chaos marine player showed up. We all admired his awsomely (?) painted and customed slaanesh-nurgle marines. Then the defiler comes out... It's hard to explain so I'll start from the ground up. The legs were typical slaanesh-style defiler legs nurgled up near the "knees" and the sections where it meets the body. The best part was the spikes with the impaled cadians and rotting bodies.
But the upper half... Imagine something along the lines of a fat, bloated, bald person with ultra-sag breasts connected by a fine (and real) gold chain. I can't remember much more detail due to being blinded by its awsome power.
Oh I think one of his tanks had some lady-bits on it too...
