Hi Guys, After a long break from modelling I'm back and ready to start work on my beloved SM scouts. I've never been a massive fan of Space marine preffering Imperial Guard for the gritty underdog feel, but I love the scout models. This army idea has been brewing for a while but It will take a while to get stuff done due to the inevitable family/work responsibilities blah, blah.
I'm not great with the Fluff but the rough idea behind it would be: a new founding chapter who have been ravaged by hundreds of years of defeats at the hands of various invading armies the cahpater finds itself with little or on marine trained or equiped with full power armour. the Neophytes are the core of the army let by a hand full of experienced scout Masters.
The chapter find themselves beseiged on a planet of ruined city scapes.their vehicles and armour show the wear and tear of a prolonged urban war with very few supply ships making it through the orbital blockade to replenish supplies.
I'll be basing colour schemes on an urban theme, blacks/greys/green, looking to give myself the chance to learn new painting skills mainly with armour weathering ,mud and dust treatments etc.
if anyone has any tips on thes etechniques I'd love to hear them. it'sprobaly not going to be a game ready army but you never know.
any feedback would be glady recieved.
keep your eyes peeled for new bits and bobs.
Cheers

Here the first piece in the Army, a heavy weapons quad.I've never like the normal attachk bike so wanted to create a more mobile 4wd version. This one will will have a scout either spotting or sniping not sure yet.plan is to have the scout leaning on the side rather than riding it. I did fancy doing another one with the scout with his feet up on the handlebars resting. with the idea that as a scout /sniper a long time is spent just waiting in position. just an idea.
the bike has a lot of painting to do so very much WIP but I wanted to get started on the weathering and damage. let me know what you think so far.
trying to go for a german WWII armour look (sort of).

That looks awesome, did you use the attack bike as a basis or 2 bikes?

two standard bikes with bits from a IG sentinal as well as my bitz box. Thanks

Post by: cosmic pixie
Cool. I was thinking of something similar with a sentinel cockpit turned into a sidecar but what are you counting the AC as?
24276
Post by: trench.one
Not really planning to game but My thinking was it would count as a Heavy Bolter. plans are to do a secong with a Melta,p[erhaps utilising the Flamer from the sentinel.I woudl like to keep the army "legal" but I'd rather go for aesthetics first.

Yeah, have you got any IG heavy flamers with the double nozzle thing>

The Heavy Flamer that comes with the sentinels looks the business.
I just need to work out some conversions for the standard troops.
I have a bunch of scout painted already so these will need stripped before they can be done with the new urban look.
trying to get inspiration at the moment from US army recon pics etc.

That quad looks awesome. I especially like the idea of a none combat posed Marine for a change! For Urban bases random lumps of clipped sprue are your friend. I also like to use random gubbins especially tubing and wires. I found that a browse through a big DIY shop with an open mind after random bits of plastic helps. Another element I use is crushed pastels and gravel as basing colours giving a dust of ages feel. I work on demolition sites and the dust is an ever present feature of destroyed buildings.

Brilliant thanks mate, I need to get my hands on some gravel and stuff.when you say pastels ,do you mean blackboard chalk/artists pastels.I'll probably try and base it on a lareg circular base with rubble.
I've got my thinking cap on for the scout conversions.
thanks again

Post by: trench.one
Been looking at new ideas for the scout conversions. keeping wit hthe whole city fighting German army style I've spotted some head from the "secrets of the third reich" miniatures. not sure how these will turn out on scouts ,may be better on imperial guard but I like the dirty urban feel.
also found this pic of the head tattoo and thought it would be a cool addition to bald scout heads if I can pull it off. This is actually a real tat, some folk need to get a grip.
don't want it feeling like a neo nazi army but let me know what you think.
hopefully be using some IG parts for the scouts as well, it may end up feeling more like an IG army but that's not a bad thing.
pic of the quad pilot coming up soon,I've opted for a bolt pistol on him bit may revert to a sniper rifle. sniper rifle just didn't feel right on a biker.you guys may differ.
pics coming tonight

Double-eagle tattoo... Is it better or worse to claim it's an homage to the Roman Empire?
The bike looks cool by the way. I don't have any real thoughts on it other than it looks neat and it's original.

It's better than claiming it's anything to do with nazi symbolism, but the skinhead and earings don't help.

So I've purchased the heads, just waiting for them to get posted to me. so I have a theme sorted for the characters. more modelling to be done over the next couple of days, family permitting.
24276
Post by: trench.one
done a wee bit more work on the attach quad pilot. he's spotting for targets while keeping his bolt pistol handy . waiting on the german army heads coming.
the gas mask heads will be used for a hardcore an close combat based squad, shotguns, blades etc.
heavy bolter body is for a squad moving up into position, failry laid back, slung bolters .
trip to GW at the end of the week for more scouts and maybe catachan or cadians to add some more character.
does anyone think i'll have an issue with the general size of the cadian parts adding them to scouts, catachans look a bit bulkier .?
unsure how the new heads will work along side the GW heads,we'll find out I suppose
tidying up of GS to be done.

A bit more done on the heavy bolter scout, the GS needs a tidy again, currently drying. re positioned the both arems and added gs to the bottom of the torso to tilt the body, looking more like he's lugging a heavy load.carrying ammo packs . I'll do the rest of the squad in a similar style.
still waiting on the heads. probably give these guys field forage caps with peaks.
hope you like.
I have a sentinal needing built but can't ecide what to do with it, covert it to count as a draednought for the scouts or use it in a diorama of sorts.always wanted to do a team of goblind over running a sentinal with stick bombs ,hanging of it as it flails around trying to shake them off.
also have a dreanought to play with. the aim with this will be to have it very damaged to show the age of it,the dread having survived whilst the rest of the marines dies over hundreds of years street fighting, leaving just the young hardened scouts to wage a desperate and hidden war.
comments more than welcome, I appreaciate it aint that excitingtill I start painting these guys.
can't decide on colour but might try and mix up the unifrm colour to show the scout personalising the gear.these guys will obviously be less disciplined than regular marines.

This fixes it. I am definitely getting some SM scouts. The models look great, I like the lighter SM armour.
What you're doing with them is fantastic, too. What you have up so far looks great, and the themes for the squads sound awesome. I can't wait to see an army of these guys.
The color choices remind me of Red vs. Blue. "It's not pink, dude!"

heres another wee gem. always like Gretchin/Goblins and fancied adding one to this army. This guy is a goblin tracker/spotter ,strange I know but the fluff goes something like:
During the years of fighting the Gretchin ,sick of years of being pushed around by the Orks they managed to assist the Scouts in overthrowing the Orks. The Scouts grudgingly agreed and since those days the Gretchin have tagged along with the scouts, assisting and spotting where they can. this obviously would never happen with a fully fledged chapter but due to the scouts having been so depleated over the years their cunning nature has allowed them to employ many tactics not normally seen.
or something like that.
anyway this little guy is armed to the teeth with various, tried to add as many imperial bits and bobs to him to show his change in allegiance. let me know what you think. just thought it was a nice idea. In a simlliar way that the us cavalry would use indian scouts and trackers.
let me know what you think guys.

I like the gretchin he's like a lucky mascot or something. what will he count as model wise? would you be able to use him as an actual scout?
24276
Post by: trench.one
DC-Ravenour: I've still to work that one out, I don't see why not. He's got a boltgun to keep his weapons legal as a scout.I'm not gaming at the moment so it's not a real problem but i'd like to think I can throw him in as scout, maybe even a sarge? he has a chain sword in his pack and a pistol.
My other thought was to do a full gretchin squad and count them as scouts.not sure if the novelty would be lost though.

Don't think a space marine would take orders grom a gretchin sarge under any surcumstances!

I hear what you're saying. I definately like the idea of the tracker though. If he could be in there as a stand alone special character it would be cool.
I'm a sucker for the underdogs in 40k, when I gamed it was never about winning always about having an army with character.
I had an all Snotling BB team back in the day. winning was always tricky.

That little guy is awesome. I love the little guys, too. Maybe you could have a grot tracker for all or most of the units. The grot... or is it a snot, with the telescope would be another good one for the role.
The running poses are coming out great. The armless one looks like he's about to jump over something.
24276
Post by: trench.one
So, I got the side cap and forage cap heads in last night. no pics as yet but got forage cap heads on the three running guys pictured. had to GS the knecks to beef them up a bit but they look cool at the moment.
swapped the head on the Quad bike guy as well for a side cap head with goggles.
I'll get some pics up tonight.

Post by: trench.one
So here we go, got the heads on and started base coating, the Goblin tracker is still very much WIP but has inks, washes and some highlights done.
planning on all grey armour on the scouts but the uniform colour will vary depending on role and to show a degree of personalisation.
the biker has green unifrom at the moment , not sure on the tactical boys, snipers will probably have an amount of camo, assault boys(who are getting gas mask /forage caps heads will be black.
let me know what yo uthink of the heads ,I think they work.any suggestions welcome.

A bit more work done on the scouts. arms and slung bolter are on another guys for the running tactical/bolter squad.I think the pose works nicely, plenty movement.
the other guy is the first model for the Close combat squad.this guys is the shotgun boy, blowing the door and kicking it in,these guys are based around a sort of sas house clearance team.not sure what to put in his other hand.I was thinking about a bolt pistol, or potentially a grenade or blade. any suuggestions?
the gas mask face works quite nicely for these guys I think.
need to get another box of scouts to continue, but the aim is to have small elite squads with loads of character.
I have the sniper models but still a bit stuck on poses.I need to watch "Enemy at the gates" for a bit of inspiration.
more painting coming soon.

I'd say add the door to kick, but that could look a bit odd/cause LoS issues. Although carting a door around isn't as odd as carting around a large rock for your commander to stand on, or a tree/wall for a sniper to hide behind.

Hey Folks, so another bit of work done while the other half watched her does of soaps.
I've rethought the shotgun dude after your kind words and advice, added a bit of rubble and beams and a grenade in hand. a bit of tidying up to do but def' looks better.
Started a test model for my sniper squad. side cap head waiting it out on a pile of rubble. had to do a major remodel of the legs as well as a load of GS on the cloak and hint of a hood. the rest of the squad will probably be in similar surrounding, want to have a spotter , as well as a full hood on one sniper. again toying with the grot assistant/tracker/spotter.

Hi Guys, Just done a bit more work on an assult squad scout. trying to make these guys a lot more dynamic, the standard scout poses are crap.
If you notive the legs on this guy are the old lighter grey plastic compared to the new darkek grey body. the older legs have nowhere near the amount of detail in the casting than the new kits. not sure if this is true for all the paltic minis but shows the quality on the new stuff has got better,I shouild bloody hope so for the price of them.
I'd love some more comments on these guys, I'm really enjoying the modelling more than the painting at the moment but I'll get some colour on them soon.

So , Another couple of models together, I've finally finished the first 5 man scout squad, 3x bolters , 1x heavy bolter and sarge with power fist.
The Sargeant has been posed leaping from a been mid power fist punch, the base need more rubble etc but I'm reasonably happy with it. the power fist came from an old Termi' arm.I've have another few with will be butchered for the assault squad scout sarge.still feel I need to add some more gear to show his rank, melta bombs no doubt.
another bolter guy for the same squad done as well, the same style of running/leaping pose , throwing a grenade.again the base needs more work.
as suggested by the Good Green I've tilted the head forward on the shotgun guy to stop him looking like he's falling back too much. I think it does work.
also a pic of the whole first squad posted.
the snipers are taking a while but I'll be woking on these as well as the assault team. the dreadnoughtis very much in my thoughts for conversion ideas but may be fairly simple .

I like the different approach to SMs. Love the Sniper. He seems to carry an air of arrogance about him, like the whole cliche 'lone wolf' story. Each scout is completly different, especially with those heads. Nice work me old china
24276
Post by: trench.one
Thanks Bash. That's the idea, have them all individuals with different poses.
the one thing I don't like about scout snipers is you have to take 5 guys. surely they would be better as solo or even 1x sniper 1 spotter teams.
laways liked the idea of th elone sniper living off his wits."enemy at the gates" is a great film.
15735
Post by: Bash the Bosh
I was thinking that. Why have five snipers, when all the snipers I know in my regiment work in pairs (one spotting, one shooting). I mean you have a sniper platoon, but they break down into sticks of 4 with a WMIK (Weapons mounted installation kit) Landrover/Jackal (the monstrous 4x4 used in Afghan).
You could get away with it in a IG army (Special weapons squad,3 with sniper rifles,3 spotting) but why not SM scouts.
Anyway I digress. The sniper you made...very Vasily (can't spell last name). Not sure how you would work him in a normal 40k, but b**locks to that. He looks great.
24276
Post by: trench.one
The sniper model will be part of a squad , the paln was to have 3 main snipers with the other guy spotting, rifle slung or on the deck.maybe 1 sniper sarge sleeping or looking over maps.nothing to stop me having two shooters and two spotters with the sarge, might just work.
The Jackals look pretty emense, must try and build something along those lines, landspeeder on wheels or something around the chasis.
Cheers for the comments though

Really good stuff there. Especially like the realism of the running pose on several of the scouts, far superior to the GW stuff.
For the bases thought this may be of some added inspiration;

another couple of nights modelling and the result is this guy, the scout sniper spotter I've been wanting to do. gave him a missile launcher to make him a bit motre playable.
I really don't like the GW camo cloaks , this ones been shortened and GS added to create the rolled up look.I think it works, the thinking is that the length of the cloaks makes them farely cumbersome when picking routes through the rubble to a shorter option would be preferable.
hood obviously added over the side cap head.some rockets to be added and more rubble.

Modelling in the age of plentiful plastics is a lot more fun than the old dremmel-and-clippers routine used to be when everything was metal.

Post by: The Good Green
The new guy is looking good. I don't know about the rolled up cloak, though. It's the edges of the rolled section. How are they rolled up? Straps/some kind of bungee material in the edge of the cloak?
I like to see them sticking or hanging out on either side. Not in a way that would draw attention, of course, but like fabric hanging around a single strap in the center. I like the concept behind it a lot.
24276
Post by: trench.one
Thanks for all the comments guys.
good green: if you look closely there is a central buttoned strap, which would be attached to the inside of the cloak, I might well add another 1 either side to keep the roll tight but not sure if it's really needed.
had a wee base coating sess last night for the tactical squad and start of the house clearing squad.
House clearers have black uniforms ie SAS but all units will have the same grey powerarmour.the tact' squad had ctachan green uniforms.
not sure about the snipers, any suggestions on colour scheme?

the have the generic grey armour but was wither thinking brown or grety or camo uniforms.

Hey guys, thanks again for the kind words. had a couple of days off the modelling but here's the latest fiddlings.Another sniper , this guy is to pair up with the spotter, he's crawling into position loading his weapon. still a bit of work to do, some rubble, and more work on the cloak this will have the bottom corners folded up and buttoned up.got another sarge done as well, pics to follow.the orignal power fist sarge has had hs head swapped and he's now part of the CC squad, felt his pose worked well with those guys.
gve me 5 and I'll have the other sarge up.

Its a good idea trench, but i'm not sure it show natural movement like your other models. I think if he is leaning that far forward you need to maybe place one of the hands on the ground, sort of like he's dragging his rifle into position. Just an idea though.

Cheers Lenny, this guy is a major WIP, the plan is to build up the rubble and beams underneath the gun and front of the body to support it.
like you said from the side it looks a wee bit awkward, this one was pretty tricky.
your idea od dragging the rifle was my alternative pose for him.

Sorry for the lack of posts, been pretty busy at work.
so latest work, a new sarge for the tactical squad, I've added the leaping power fist sarge to the assualt squad, just seemed more appropriate.
the latest sarge had a power fist robbed from an inquisitor termi.
another guy for the assault squad, running into action wth twin bolt pistols
the last p;ics are of my new commander.started as a counts as terminator model and has grown a bit.still lots of work to do.
the torso is from an old comissar, he's been ravaged by war and encased within the walker, might be counts as dreadnought or termi, not sure ,any ideas?
still trying to decide on the weapons/arms.
more work to do so catch you all later.

That commander is gonna be great! What a start.
The other two guys look good, too. The bolt pistol guy looks like he's dodging to the left. Good mid-action pose!

Really enjoying seeing these conversions and that commissar looks quite exciting as a concept, reminds me a lot of the 2nd Edition artworks.

not much of an update but I did a bit more work on this sniper, built up some rubble under him to supportthe body and stop him floating too much. still not happy with his right hand, might cut it off and gs it. I've also re sculpted the flaps on the cloak. let me know what you think, I promise I'll do more painting soon.
Cheers

The rubbled helps make more sense of the pose, but I'm unsure about what you've done with the cloak. I work with fabric a fair amount and I know that if I did that with a normal heavy cloak fabric it would flop down so that the buttons were on the inside rather than the outside, even in that pose. I would suggest making it so that the buttons were higher and in the centre back of the cloak if you want them visible or make it more evident that the corners of the cloak are rolled. Either way, the buttons should be above the folded fabric rather than below for what you're doing.
The hands look okay, I'm not sure what you feel needs changing about them.

DAMN YOU ELF BOY AND YOUR TOTAL SENSE MAKING!
Yeah I know its not entirely right but I tried the fold the other way and they felt wrong.what I may still do is add straps to them to hold them in place, I like the way the folds fell and the fact it left a nice space to give a bit of depth when painting.
I totlaly get wht you are syaing, why do some mini's just take a lot longer to get right than others!
thanks for your input.

Well with any luck your gonna like this, more work done on the commander(counts as dreadnought). still a load of wotk to do with GS and additional bitz and bobs but the general shape and pose are sorted. enjoy

ooo... that Comissar is looking awesome, really looking forward to seeing what you do with his base and paint!
As for the cloak, I hadn't thought about straps. If you add a strap that's sewn onto the point about the rolled fabric those buttons will make a lot more sense and give you a minimum of work.

Nice job mate. I haven't been on here in three weeks, but the work you've churned out looks MEGA. The way you position the troops, especially the commander/dreadnought, looks brilliant. Could you post a pic of the whole army so far? I look forward to the ATV's you've got in the pipe-line.

That certainly looks unique and great fun daft question is it a Dreadnaught or a Commander? It certainly looks cool. I'd be tempted to do something with the ball joint at the back probably adding a power point there or something.

Llamhead: the plan with him is, in terms of an army list he'll be classed as a dreadnought(twin linked lascannon,cc weapon with flamer). but he'll head up the army in terms of aesthetics. I'll throw in a captain as head of recruitment or whatever to keep the HQ chioce legal.I don;t plan on gaming but I like to work the lists anayway.
the ball joint is planned to have something added, still t obe decided but power packs and stuff are a good idea.
search light still to be added aswell.thinking of having a grot hugging the ground as this stampedes over head.
I still need to keep this vaguely scouty as well. Cheers mate

I'm really liking this, even though I've only just found it.
Really envious of your great GS skills as mine are kept to a minimum of filling in holes.
I particularly like the quad, its a great original thought. Also the commisar looks great.
The sniper scout w/ spotter also looks amazing.
Can't wait to see this painted as well as a group shot.
