Hello,
I posted some of these in the "say hello noob" section of the forum, but it seems moch more fitting here...
I made this SoB costume for my GF for halloween last year, took about 3 weeks to make..
One of the things I really wanted to upgrade on it was the bolt pistol, it's just a nerf repaint but it still shoots!
So inspired by Kommissar's bolt pistol build I desided to make a matched pair...
I have finished the left one and am getting closer to finishing the right..
The almost complete right and complete left..
I'm also adding to/upgrading the armor..
Sabbat Helmet.. WIP
And a scaled down Powerfist WIP ( made more lady like for da sista's)
A flamer ( WIP)
And after that comes the Commissar costume for her..
Laspistol...
Some "medals" for the commissar..
Another WIP medal..
Thanks for having a look, feed back welcome

These are incredible!
Good to see a female wargammer on this site too! Us lads are outnumbering you so much, I'm beginning to feel girls have almost deserted the game :O
Once again, great work!

Some very cool stuff there.
Should point out though that the barrel on the bolt pistol is far too large for the ammunition you have in it...
Loving the flamer so far. The pilot light on the front is a brilliant touch.

Post by: Finnlock
The nerf gun is easy, it's simply a repaint of the Airzone clip tek http://www.amazon.com/Clip-Tek-Feed-Ejecting-Shells/dp/B001RAKZXO
The Other, new Bolt pistols I'm making I have some WIP pics that show what I did to make it, however the best sorce for the info is Kommissar's Blog http://bolter.blog.com/
He uses a differnt base then I do, but the concept is the same. I will post some of the info about how I made it here if you want.
Yes, the barrel is larger, but that's warhammer for ya
The pilot light is a LED on a swan neck modded to look like a real flame...

Almost done...man, I thought becouse I knew what I was doing this would go faster...it really didn't seem to at all!
Mostly due to the dry times for the putty...
Anyway, almost to the painting stage...
Clip housing..
Clip ( shells glued inplace)
I kinda f*cked up on the barrel, the hole is off center. I know it's to big, but the other is the same size and I want them to match. :(
The fun stuff is coming, PAINTING!

Okay, well the right bolt pistol is being painted, 1st few layers of paint are drying as I type...
New side project, Nerf Bolter and If I can pull that off, then it is Nerf STORM BOLTER, yes I said (typed) STORM BOLTER!
The 1st test went well, which was modding the clip, it only holds 5 darts, but it works well and stays in the gun with out problem.
It's not just a plastic card cover of the clip ( although that would work too..)
More to come and I think I'll start a new thread about it..

Thanks, I used Craft foam for the base of the glove as it has flex. The finished one will be a combo of craft foam and PVC expanded foam
CadianXV wrote:If you don't mind me asking, roughly how much have you spent on these costumes so far?
Um...to much, I bought multiple items for somethings incase I f*cked up, so I probly don't want to think about it... I bought a lot of tools to build this stuff as well
I think I might sell some of the bases if anyone is interested in making their own.

Most everything is done by hand. The angles on the bolt pistol are found objects and the "swirls" on the armor are a product called grundge board.
Other then that, yes, all done by hand.

Have you thought about using a hockey glove? Not the goal tender's glove, but the one the linemen use.

Post by: Finnlock
Yes, that was the 1st idea I had. I liked the thickness of the finguers, but it turned out as I looked at them that they don't work in the wrist area. There is not enough flex in the wrist for them to do what I wanted them to do, also the lenght was an issue, they are to short.

I'd say nomenclature... if I was going to be picky
However, that besing said... you are correct.
Definition of Magazines as pertaining to fire arms:
Quote:
A magazine (also called a mag or, commonly but incorrectly, especially when removable, a clip) is an ammunition storage and feeding device within or attached to a firearm. Magazines may be integral to the firearm (fixed) or removable (detachable).

Haha, I think it bothers me so much because I'm in the army and when I was doing basic training a lot of the recruits that didn't know the difference would cost us copious amounts of pushups for calling a magazine a clip. Please tell me, what is the major difference, besides that the magazine has more rounds. would a clip be used for different firearms whereas a magazine would only be used for assualt rifles or something? This sounds like somthing interesting.

I saw the costume and I thought it was okay - I've seen some better ones (namely an incredible one that showed up last year) but I've seen far worse. The accessories though - namely the las pistol, bolt pistols, and power fist, look absolutely fantastic. Lately, Nerf has just been the gift that keeps on giving for people doing this kind of work. I was at a few conventions over the last few weeks and the sheer number of well-converted Nerf guns is staggering.

As a gun nut, I can answer that. Detachable box magazines are used in semiautomatic (non-revolver) pistols and high-capacity weapons (assault rifles, SMGs, etc). Clips don't really see mainstream use anymore, they made more sense when the standard capacity for military rifles was 5 to 10 rounds. Nowadays, with most weapons being high-capacity automatics, the only use I see from clips is to hold loose ammunition together prior to loading it into a standard magazine, or on SKS rifles that are still clip-fed.
26673
Post by: Finnlock
at risk of derailing my own thread..
by Ashley Pomeroy
Simply put, a magazine is a container in which ammunition is stored, whilst a clip is a small piece of metal which holds rounds in place whilst outside the magazine, and sometimes within the magazine as well. Picture in your mind the bomb bay of a B-52. Yes, you are there. The bay itself is the bomber's magazine, whilst the bomb racks on which the bombs are placed are clips.

You are refering to Kommissar's SoB suit, yes, he's is awesome and better in may ways then mine, and in fact influenced mine once I saw it. But he took 6 months to build his, I did mine in 3 weeks and the next one is going to be better!

Well, I can tell you how I built the 1st one, which wasn't to hard really. I did it in 3 weeks after all, the new one is much more intensive, I have yet to finish a piece of the armor yet, I have mostly been doing mock-ups to see how the final peices will be built ( which is one thing I learned from the 1st one).
Once I start actual construction I plan on taking photos along the way. If you want a list of the mats I built the 1st one out of, just LMK.

I plan on covering the basic shape ( made out of craft foam) in PVC foam which can be sanded and what not.
If I build it like I built the prototype I can use the elbow joint and a inner support about 3 inches up from the wrist to help support and center the body of the powerfist when the arm is moved.
It's important to support it at atlest 2 points so the wrist can move freely.
Okay, so that's basicly what I have started to do.
These are still WIP pics, but I am really starting to like the size of the piece now it's much larger now and stands out more. It's still just about as light weight as it was in foam.
The main mod I made was to add a cut away at the front of the elbow so it could flex better.
Here it is with the shell added, I wrote "FAITH" on it in silver sharpie.
I desided that it needed the trim around the elbow and wrist like I had in the mock-up.The trim is not attached, just heat foarmed to fit, it is also twice as thick as the "base" PVC I used. I may deside to trim it more along the top area to shadow the rounded shape of the edge. The wierd squiggles on it are where I tried to cover up the crap fluer I drew.
As you can see it's a shell over the foam base.
What do you guys think?

Nowadays, with most weapons being high-capacity automatics, the only use I see from clips is to hold loose ammunition together prior to loading it into a standard magazine, or on SKS rifles that are still clip-fed.
It's also useful to know that a clip basically just holds the cartridges in a vertical stack so they can be stripped off into an internal magazine in the gun.
So, with the SKS, you fit the clip into the top, shove down, and then cartridges feed into the gun, and the clip falls away.
Also, that brings up the other one... "Bullets" are the things that fly out of the gun. "Cartridges" are the entire assembly of case, primer, powder, bullet, etc.

Nice. Are you going to put some gold/brass accents on the hand flamer like you have on the bolters as well? I think the Aquilla on the canister and the nozzle guard would both look sharp this way...

That is an MP5A2 or A4... or SD2 or SD5. Go Google those and see. Then Google M4. Please do research on the topic before attempting to call someone out on something (and failing).

Okay, I made this ribbon/banner out of sheet styren for the powerfist, I was going to write "FAITH" on it to cover the one I had done in marker which I liked.
However, I think I will probably sculpt it out of putty in the end as I want more of a 3D effect, but I really like the shape of it and the way it came out.
I'm hoping to figure something to use it on, it's about 6" long 2 1/2" wide.

Fantastic outfits! If you don't mind, I'm gonna utilize a few of your ideas to fashion my own suit I've always wanted to do.
I'm trying to get my Chaos Marine suit off the ground but am really stalled at what's best to use for the armor.
I'm curious to know what did you use? I've read multiple articles for best using armor and have no wish whatsoever to use paper mache or fiber glass plastic. Just seems like a lot more work than its actually worth.
I'd like to use Styrene for additional detail like the markings, trim details and such but once again, don't know what to use for the foundation.

Thanks bd1085,
Fist thing I would do if I was you is join this forum, http://z6.invisionfree.com/Obscurus_Crusade/index.php?act=idx
I think you will find a lot of your questions answered there.
The base I used for the SoB suit was a plastic dress form. More or less like this one
That's not going to work for you however For most every other piece of the costume and the weapons I have made, I used PVC Expanded foam, which I got here..http://www.tapplastics.com/shop/product.php?pid=342&
The foamed sheets are heat formable and can be carved and a number of glues work well with it.
It would be great to make the legs, arms chest and shoulders of your suit also the back pack.
There is a person who makes some very nice chaos helms,
but if you don't want to go that route, you could just use some stage make-up which could look cool.
The 1st step should be to join the forum I linked and 2nd draw out the suit you have in mind and realise not all of it will be do-able. Next I would use some craft foam to cut out and get a feel for the scale and fit of the suit on you before digging in to the PVC foam. Infact people have made whole suits using just craft foam and they have turned out very well.
Infact you can not only use the craft foam for the templates but as filler/base pices to make the PVC sit up higher. This is what I did when I made the power fist. It's a craft foam core with a PVC shell over the top.
Hope this helps.

A bit more WIP shots.
These are the shoulder bells, they are cut out and shaped, I drew on them just to get a sence of how I want to decorate them and to see if I was going to have enough room.
You can see the curve I have given them at the ends.
These are infact the 3rd design I made for the shoulders, I wasn't happy with the other 2. I like the shape, look and size of this last pair.
I also finished the hand flamer, remade the ribbon banner on the side.
I also made some head way on the working chainsword which made me happy

Yeah I signed up to get some more info on the website and actually have some time off coming up to see if I can scrounge some craft foam to make some mock molds. I'm a big guy but I want to make it even bigger on myself. I'm getting some measurements done and will see how it comes along within the next week.
I'll reserve a lot of my questions for the Obscurus board.

Anyway, here are some shots of one of the new greaves I'm making, it's very much a WIP.
The skull isn't attached, I need to coat the inside with fiberglass so it's stronger. I also plan on using putty on the halo to make it more 3d and conform more to the edge of the skull.

Commissar Agro wrote:WOW!

Yeah, not sure how I can fix this. There has to be enough "flex" in the "chain" to allow the teeth to spin on the wheels with out causing drag on the system or jamming. That's why they are small teeth, about 1/2inch wide and 11/2" long. I made them out of foam because it's more forgiving, hard teeth would jam/stop-up more often, plus you know some yahoo is going to put their hand up against it at some point... Once this thing is done I wont have easy axcess to the innter workings so if it jams I'm kinda screwed. I have some ideas and I hope they work.
LunaHound wrote:Finnlock may i ask how you acquired such skill and knowledge for crafting these?

Hard won...I don't have any background in these things, I just think of what I want to do/make and then just muddle through with what I have/can find. I wish I has some skills and tools, man I'd make really cool stuff then!
Lorne wrote:Chainsword is made of pure win, may I suggest an eagle head instead of the skull for the pommel. It would give it a sleaker look.
I have a freind who is almost done making a none working chainsword with an eagel pommel which looks awesome, I wouldn't want him to think I was stealing all his best ideas
Plus this way if I ever do a chaostume( just made that word up) I can use it there too.
I more then likely will build another one after this one with many of the bugs worked out. That one will most deffenetly have a more elaborate...well everything I hope

You won't see the glove under the plates once the whole thing is painted. It's going to be all black and weathered/battle damaged so this should cover the golve's white parts.
I also will be covering the plam of the glove so it looks armoed as well.

Firstly, EPIC win on the chain sword i must say.
Have you thought about having a few bolts and nuts running up the middle of the plates, or the sides just behind the track. It means that 1. it would add to the effect having the bolts; 2. you can re open it to gain access to it for any jamming or malfunctioning, and 3. if you place some covers over the thread of the bolt inside, it can act as a guide for the track itself?

I'm no where near finished with the cosmetic part of the chainsword, *IF* and thats a big if, I make a second chainsword I need to come up with a better "chain" for it that I can use a guide track for the "chain". To be honest, if I built it the same way I did this one, I could make a dual bladed chainsword with the two chains spinning in opposit directions but I'd have to be insain to want to do that

I don't know what kind of voltage that motor you put in the chainsword can handle, but instead of A batteries, you should consider trying to wire a rechargeable RC car/vehicle battery back.
You obviously know what you're doing. Should be easy to slap a small plug for ac power and recharging, but at the same time bump you from 2-6v of power, to 8-9v (or be a man and put a pair in there for 18v ). That would get those teeth spinning like they should, and also remove the need to have to make it 'openable' to replace batteries.
Hopefully it wouldn't get hot enough to melt the plasti-card though. Maybe just don't rip unsuspecting victims apart for too long

Hmmm, I had tossed around the idea of using a RC car battery in the handle but I had not thought of just making it a sealed unit with a cable that comes out to charge it...clever!
Nowlan wrote:Is that a hockey glove I see underneath the exterior of that powerfist?
It's a Field Hockey glove, Hockey gloves are to stiff in the thumb area, the field hockey glove has a lot more give and flex while still being very bulky.
Death By Monkeys wrote:I have one criticism. The chainsword isn't nearly loud enough. That's about as bad of a thing as I could say about this.
I had a speaker with a chainsaw sound card, but because of the size of it, it wasn't loud enough to justify the added work. This thing is heavy and a lot unwieldly. *IF* I ever build a second one I will totally overhaul the way I made this one. SO maybe I can build a better speaker/sound system for it.
Thanks for all the feedback and awesome ideas!

A quick trip to a radio shack would net you a negative pole barrel plug to stick someplace in the handle. Then just wire a battery to it and use any old 9v adapter to charge it. It's really amazing now, but I think I would wet myself to see those teeth painted up and spinning at full potential.
On the topic of modding nerf guns, the whole reason I know about slapping some RC batteries in it is because I kind of enjoy modding nerf guns myself for performance reasons. There is a pretty popular mod of the Nerf 'Vulcan' belt fed gun that uses a few 'd' cell batteries; stock it can fire about 180 rounds a minute. Respectable for a toy gun. Swapping a couple Lithium RC battery packs though bumps it to an easy 500 rounds per minute.
Also, if you haven't looked into it, a nerf 'deploy' gun would make a great full size Boltgun with some of the same cosmetic's you've been doing. Has a stock, foregrip and is clip fed like the 'recon' you're using for your storm bolter.
Thanks for all your hard work. Everyone is really enjoying it.

Disclaimer: Running 2x 9.6v RC car batteries did cause their nerf gun to melt by burning out the motor... Oh, and if you short out the RC batteries there's a chance they'll explode.

Well one step closer, I made another adjustment to the mechanics of the sword, it now runs twice as fast and has a better sound to it. Still not a two stroke motor, but sounds more intense now.
Here are two videos of it, the 1st with the slower setup (posted before)and the second with the high-test speed.

Very nice work Finnlock. Have you ever tried using pickle barrel? I can't recall what the tech term is for it, but it is basically thick plastic that frequently can be acquired in ~55 gallon drum shapes. SCA guys use it a lot for armor since it is really tough, cheap, and can be shaped easily with heat. I had been knocking around ideas for using it for some SoB armor for my wife, but she would never wear it, and I am more of a waxed leather guy myself.
Still, you might want to check out some SCA sites for armor tips. You probably are not planning on taking a shot from a club in this, but durable and more importantly comfortable armor might be handy for you Keep up the great work!

The stuff I'm using is VERY tough, it's foamed PVC, so basicly a sheet of PVC...you could take a shot with a club with it, why you would want to is another matter...

Well, the chainsword is proving to be problematic again...thing is getting heavy and I need to figure somethings out cosmetically to finish it with out it being super huge.
ANYWAY, here is something I have been working on, the Sabbat pattern helm ( WIP). I wanted to do something to make it stand out some, so I'm thinking wings to give it more of a cannoness style...Wings and flure will probably be gold....what do you think?
Also I started to make some new Inq seals. They are about 2 1/2" wide.

You could always get a red leather executioner's mask and go for a sister repentia. Just kidding. The helmet looks like it will work well. Are you going to put any lenses in the eyeholes?

As for the helm you may want to keep it simple, if you add wings and whatnot it will get awkward to wear and get caught up on stuff.

I used a cap for a PVC pipe to make the "runes" on the seals. I made 1 impression then turned it about 40 degrees and pressed it again, the over lapping letters make it look like "runes"

Yes, she can see, as Lorne noted, the divided area allows her to see under the ref glowing section. Infact if you look closely you can see her eyes.
I could make the eye glow fill the opening more , but she would have little vision and bump into stuff, hehe.

Yeah, the Powerfist isn't "to scale" and I chose to do that because I wanted it to be more feminine. Aside from 1 umproduced model I have never seen a Sister with a powerfist so I felt I had some leeway with the scale and design. However, I will say once you see it on compaired to the other arm and the in relation to the armor itself you know it's a powerfist.

It's two part epoxy sculpted to form the banner. Reads "FAITH" on the banner and I added epoxy "rivits" to it as well.

When I started to really look for reference pics to build the suit I found some GW art that had SoB with hair color other then white.

You know this never occurred to me until just now, what do you do when the inevitable costume failure happens? You must take a battery powered hot glue gun or something with you to piece things back in place should they come loose or fall apart? I mean the whole thing is essentially just spray painted foam and plastic hot glued in place right? Are there sewing seams in the costume? you bring needle and thread, or just super glue holes shut?
Inquiring minds want to know: Do cos-players carry a costume version of the emergency roadside kit we all have in our cars?

Project Bolter:
While Raven is out of town I desided that I really needed one of these in the armory..they are iconic of everything that is 40k.
That and I was bored....
It has a working slide and cocking lever, they are linked toghter, so when you pull the cocking lever the slide opens.
I like the look of the scoped bolters, so I added a cheap airsoft sight I had. It's offset and I like the look of it. I probably will change the angle and way it's attached, but I wanted it on to see how it looked.
Still a lot to add to do before I can start painting it, like the iron sights and a lot of detailing, but here are some WIP pics.
Shot with the bolt pistol for scale.

Also I added some pipe to the scope, makes it about 5" longer over all now.

You know aged and whatnot and i think it fits the image of an imperial officer or inquisitor drinking rare scotch then wine but idk edited for stupidity

Well I did some more work on the Bolter. I may end up changing a few minor things, but for the most part it is
all puttied and ready for painting. The barrel is an old one I had from the bolt pistols I'm using as a place holder, I will be making a new one for the bolter.
Shot of the cocking lever, which is linked to the ejection port cover.Pull the cocking lever and the ejection port opens.
Ejection port open.
With the scope.
Scale shot.

This is the thing I dislike about the 40k models. In the fluff Bolter rounds are perfectly efficientt, in that they don't have a casing. This means that an ejection port is completely unnecessary. However, I completely understand you putting one on the gun, as the models, pictures etc all have them.
It's a discrepancy within 40k, and is only a factor because GW wanted to make the guns look like we expect them to, not how they would actually look.
But other than that (which is more my over-pedantic-ness than anything) the bolter, and bolt pistols look freaking awesome, and I can't wait to see the bolter all painted up =D

Actually, bolters have an ejection port for the purposes of ejecting jammed rounds. (Which, in some fluff, is a fairly common occurence).

I was just loking at lexicanum and no where does it say that bolters don't have casings. I think you were thinking of autoguns which have caseless bullets

Commissar Agro, an autogun is just a futuristic version of a rifle, and use solid ammo. solid ammunition use cases just like the rifles we use today. boltgun rounds are meant to be self propelled, and so the entire bolt round should be propelled out as it has its own propulsion, think of a mortar.

Bolter rounds have a casing with enough propellant tp shove it out of the barrel until the round's rocket propulsion can power it sufficiantly enough. If it relied on the rocket alone, it would be fairly ineffective at close range. Look at the Gyrojet for a real life referance.
Now then, everything looks awesome Finnlock, and kudos for havin a girlfriend whos into all this!
