Looks SSOOOOO cool, I'm glad I could revitalize your project and this thread!
Name for him huh? Hmmmmm not sure how good I'll be at this, mine are usually called something like Brother 2-7-3 (2nd company, 7th unit, 3rd marine). But something that has to do with being with other marines would be nifty. Brother Walks-with-other-guys-that-are-still-the-same-but-totally-different sounds a bit long winded. Told you I was bad at naming.

@tony_nids - they have a half finished razorback, I have just totally stalled on building a chapter symbol to mount on the doors and front armour, will get on it eventually.... @fifty - I had not thought of the "kings" angle, could be a good title for the battle leaders though I was looking for a native american name for the captains. From the collaborative fluff we have developed on this plog I don't think these guys have a very close relationship with the emperor TBH. I like the idea of the "long manes" being the Vets as "long Fangs" is kiind of redundant when you are talkiing about sabreteeth And I have locked in Iron Shaman, Rune Shaman, etc for my preist equivilants as well as Pride instead of Pack after getting so many good ideas from my "name my chapter" portion of the blog, thanks for all ideas tho fifty always appreciated. @finch claw - Thanks Finch, Space wolf succesors are nothing new but I hope I have put my own spin on them @captain Vyper - Cheers man! @whalemusic360 - Like the idea of referencing the fact he is with another chapter something like "walks-among-strangers" or "Runs-in-the-Void"? @Good-Green - I will take off his arms and take a close up of his medicine bag and tokens for ya, I'm hoping the base comes out ok I am never sure what to extend over the edge of the base and what top leave contained, in this case I had the skull kind of coming out of the side of the base as if it was a exposed from a rock face or hillock of dirt...if that makes sense? cheers, BLACKHAND

Don't forget to drill out the guns. Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, I'm not sure if you want to go with two lionhead shoulderpads. Isn't the other shoulder pad for squad markings?

Post by: whalemusic360
I was trying not to say that, but thats something I have to do or it drives me nutters! That and those dang mold lines.......
No worries if its something you dont do tho, as I want one of YOUR marines.

Post by: BLACKHAND
@Anung un Rama - I knew you were lurking here somewhere!
Ok, Ok I will invest in a smaller drillbit and bore out the guns I guess its time.. and about the shoulderpads, I get the feeling that people really like the custom pads, in my own squads the lion pad signifies the Lion guard status and the other shoulder has markings to show acheivments...I hadn't really thought about squad markings I can probably use paint for that, maybe colouring the purity feathers to show which squad they belong to.
@whale music- No worries, it is just laziness on my part as my 2 year old snapped my last 1mm drillbit against my leg (she was "helping Daddy paint") I will track a new one down and get that barrel sorted

I held off doing marines for a long time too Agro but I kinda like them now, despite the clumsy and disporportioned armour you can get quite a lot of character into your models.
I am also looking forward to using troops who don't melt under any kind of fire (Go Guard!)

I don't want to drop a project half way through plus I promised myself i would see my army through until I get at 2000 points and win a few games. so far i only have won a single game due to my ally's avatar destroying everything in its path.
It also sucks not having a job. 1 day I shall post a thread on my guard. so I think it may be awhile before I go for a differnt army so i will just have to admire other peoples fine work.
Sorry to derail the thread...

No worries Agro, would like to see your thread. Always good to see another masochist's Guard army

Post by: BLACKHAND
Ok so I thought I would upload some WIPs a bit earlier than expected
First up is the marine I am starting for Tony_Nids_10, wanted to see how much movement I could get without resorting to an assault marine's legs and figured that by giving him some uneven terrain and having him balance on it while aiming I might get the movement I wanted.
He need shortening at the waist and the left arm may get tucked closer to the torso, and of course the GS work on the gun arm is only a third done but you get the idea
Next is the marine I am building for Gitsplitta..and he needs a bit of explanation.
I've been a real fan of Git's two blogs since he started them and his "Doom Eagle Odyssey" blog has given me much hope that I may eventually have a son interested in the hobby (or failing that perhaps my daughter will get into it, she already helps daddy paint by tipping my paint jars on the desk and finger painting the walls..why blazing orange? why?) Anyhoo I have been tempted to build my version of a mantis warrior for a while and send it to splitta but this project has given me the perfect excuse to send my regards without stepping on his toes by hijacking his chapter!
So without further waffling I present to you
"Leads-the-Pride"...
Why is his hand waving around like that? is he just happy to see us?
No, he is waving on his two young charges, brave young warriors who have been chosen to join the ranks of the Sabre Legion and fight for the rest of their lives in the unending wars of the Imperium...
I built a decorative base for the three figures but the all pop out as you can see....
I probably should have waited till I had a paint job on the tribesman that showed them off better but hey it's late and I have been working on them all day I want to get some feedback
Cheers,
BLackhand
2050
Post by: Anung Un Rama
The first one looks really weird. Much too thin for a Marine, but I don't know why, all the parts seem to be in order.
Leads-the-pride looks cool, but the name goes a bit too far imo. And what will the tribesman be gamewise?
19931
Post by: BLACKHAND
I know what you mean about thinness of the first one, I can compact the waist and neck a bit so that it looks more "mariney" but I am also pondering leaving him lithe and fast looking...will have to see how he looks after I add the sabre legion tokens and purity feathers. As for Leads-the-Pride, the name is a reference to Gitspltta and his self appointed task of teaching his two sons to paint, model and play 40k. As such the tribesmen have no rules and are really a gift to Splitta nd his kids..hopefully one that will keep them both motivated to play and play. FYI the two tribesmen started off life as ratskins from necromunda and their spears came from the skaven sprue.
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
Very, very cool Blackhand, I am honored & the boys will be thrilled at being immortalized in a 40k model.
Will have to think up something suitable to do in return... tall order considering your talents. Can I somehow make a mantis warrior that would fit into your Sabre Legion, or just freelance a shelf piece for you... or perhaps a MW themed objective marker (a rescue of some sort)? I want to finish Styro's before I move on to yours (one at a time is about all I can handle), so give it some thought... there's time yet. I seem to do my best creative thinking if I at least have a general idea of where I want to end up... getting there is the fun part. (Road Trip!!!)
Oh, and never worry about stepping on my toes. Having someone else take up the Mantis Warriors and do them (even a single model) with their own unique spin would be extremely satisfying. I'm definitely not the territorial kind.

It probably looks thin because of the blu-tak.

Blackhand - I finally got through all of your posts. There is a lot of good stuff in here. I like your Sabre Legion quite a bit. Keep up the good work! The only comment that I'd like to add is that your pictures have all come out rather dark. I don't know what your set up is but it seems like you're not getting enough light on your guys. I'd like to be able to admire then a little bit more. That's my only two cents, lol.
19931
Post by: BLACKHAND
Yeah I know, the automatic adjust function on dakka seems to darken them quite a bit I'm starting to wonder if I should use it at all.
FYI I use two lamps at different angles with a piece of paper behind my models, cheap man's lighting box

Post by: BLACKHAND
Sorry Newt!
I have actually been painting, albeit slowly, and on a model that will soon be winging it's way to the states to join Whalemusic360's marine task force.
I also got a bit sidetracked with a tutorial I did for casting resin shoulderpads
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/307451.page
Oh and I saw somoe pics of the new Island of Blood warhammer starter set and I dug out my old skaven bitz and started playing around giving them lasguns, I have an urge to buy a couple of the new Island boxes to give me some cool command models and rat ogryn for my ratguard
but yeah I'm kinda painting

Post by: IceAngel
BLACKHAND - Do you already have or are you going to be making a skaven imperial guard army?
That sounds like fun!
19931
Post by: BLACKHAND
With the new island of blood models I am definitely considering it, so far I don't have many built just some rat subscripts in my guard army. about half way down this page is the model who will become my general http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/60/257417.page and just down this page are my rat snipers http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/120/257417.page My plan is to slowly convert and add more skaven till they make up the entire army...the real dilema is whether to skavenify my existing tanks and vehicles or buy new ones and convert those, expensive though. The idea of a chimera or russ with a screaming bell attached is pretty appealing too
26416
Post by: Young_Logan
I hear the talk about blood island and a skaven/imperial army sounds nuts, how about warpfire throwers on sentinals?
19931
Post by: BLACKHAND
Thats the thing , there are a lot of possibilites with the models, the heavy weapon teams already come in pairs and can easily be converted to carry 40k guard weapons, I have a vague idea of massive rats with back mounted weapons for sentinels but we will see, the imagery of broken and salvaged masonry chained to tanks is very interesting as well I think it would be a very unique look
22192
Post by: whalemusic360
Hmmm if you dont do that I may have to steal the idea. Ive always wanted a heavy conversion army.

I am working on the lasgun rat conversions already...hands off!
though it may help to have another ratguard modeller to bounce ideas off....

hey blackhand I'm not trying to be nitpicky or anything but I would go back and cut down the round bump under the space marine helmet on the marine with the out stretched bolter it will make it look 100 time neater and help pull off the epic pose.

@vitruvian - Haha, thanks for checking though!, Having had a good look and thinking about shelling out $40+ for one model which won't match the reast of the army I have been having second thoughts about buying him. I may end up making my own version of the talon-clawed lightning claw and use one of the sabre legion terminator pads I am already planning, then putting together my own terminator captain
@Gitsplitta - Thanks bro, I am mainly using them as a fresh break from my 40skaven so progress will be slow but getting new models for the army has piqued my interest for sure.
@Santobell - Check out my casting tutorial for tips

Post by: Commissar Agro
I like them, they look awsome and they don't look like they are slouching like GW terminators (not that they are slouching, they just look like they are). Are they taller than GW terminators?
Keep up ther good work
19931
Post by: BLACKHAND
They look taller because the chestplate is twice as long as the chestplate the termies came with. I cut the hood piece off the normal torso plate and then glued and GS'd the Sabre chestplate under it. They still sit at pretty much the same height as regular termie they just have the illusion on of height. @Whalemusic - The one on the right you mentioned is an AobR Termie that I had to do a lot more surgery on than the normal termies, it was a real learning experience to see how different the two models are. He is about 4mm taller than the rest as the waist had to be replaced and I wanted to see how much I could biggerise it without it looking goofy. The AobR head is bulkier than a normal one as well and sits quite high in the hood which is why it looks the way it does, happily from above (where you are looking when playing) it is pretty hard to tell any difference in them.

No worries Santobell,
I've seen the pads before and they are pretty tempting, they would be great as a contrast to any Sabre Toothed Lion hides I drape over the marines but at the moment I have a power armour and termie armour pads of my own design made up so I will probably only get the scibor pads for an honour guard type unit....which will be long into the future at this point
and for anyone that is still watching the thread I have picked up an AoBR Dread for the Legion as well as a drop pod so once my Skaven project winds down sometime in the next decade I will have plenty of plastic for the Sabre legion!

Damn you Lennysmash!!!!
Yeah you heard me!
So I came home this evening, ready to get some work done on Gitsplitta's Mantis Helmets then finish some plaster work on my second 40Skaven chimera...and I found a package in my mailbox.
Innocently I opened said package, quite excited actually as I saw it was from my friend Lennysmash and was hopefully some lascannons I have been looking forward to receiving. I have a Vendetta design in my head for the 40Skaven that is just aching for a bunch of heavy lascannons....but not only did I get the promised lascannons but also a very generous gift..very generous! I have nothing on hand to send Lenny to say thanks for the very cool gear he sent but he did add a note to the package with the "no pressure but I expect great things, lol". I figure the best way to repay him will be to have fun with the model, still in keeping with the Sabre Legoin, but fun.
Now I have an image in my head of Wolverine riding a harley along a highway, definitely from a comic I read when I was younger, and after half an hour scouring the net I just couldn't find anything like it (damn hugh jackson and his stupid riding a stupid bike in his stupid movie!) But that is what I'm heading towards, a lone rider cruising the wilds looking for something big to take down, the wind in his oddly shaped hair, cigar chomped in his teeth
So here it is the bare bones of my Easy Rider...
Oh and here is the sick resin bike base that Lennysmash also sent me..too cool man , way too cool.
Thanks to the generosity of another Dakkite, I'm looking at you Whalemusic, I have a crapload of DA bike pouches so I will be loading up the back of the bike with them and will probably replace the t/l bolters with a stormbolter and mount it on the front wheel arch instead of on the handlebars as I want to keep it slim an modern day bike looking rather than bulky and SM bike style.
Well I will let you guys mull it over and decide if it is worthy of Lennysmash's generosity and whether this is the right direction while I try and concentrate on Skaven and Mantis Warriors...honestly the damn bike is looking at me while I type, finish me Blackhand finish me!!!!
Cheers

Looking good BH, loving the extended front forks. Important I guess for copyright and such to point out the the base is not my design but one from ebay. I just felt it had enough savannah potential to be incorporated into your army easily.
No need to send anything else, I sent the bike as fair trade for the quality and quantity of bitz you sent already.
Glad you liked it, looking forward to more, as in full ten man squad more, lol. joking don't worry.

Post by: BLACKHAND
I was considering extending the exhausts but thought it might look too orky so I just drilled them out and left them.
Of course I didn't stop after posting the pic like I said I would so I will post another one tonight with the headlight and pouches in place, I sliced up a stormbolter for the wheel arch but I'm worried about WYSIWYG so I may end up mounting the T/L bolters on the wheel arch to save on confusion.
Funny thing Lennysmash, I read the space wolves codex again last night and found that the units that can take a bit different, he will probably end up in a mixed Lion Guard unit as weird as that is.
20739
Post by: Lennysmash
I personally use the pintle mounted storm bolter from the rhino kit on the front arch although I have also seen trooper bolters used as newer versions of the T/L bolter, both look pretty cool imo. If WM has sent you a ravenwing faring maybe you could GS a pelt over it, just a thought.

Wow !! Your work is fantastic !! I really like the way this army has taken shape. Very characterful !!
My only quible is the bolter location on what, otherwise, is a really cool bike. I think they look out of place on the wheel housing and might look better mounted on the sides of the forks up near the handles (unless you plan on using a fairing). Another option might be to mount them on the sides of the wheel housing at the hub (with a pivot mount).
Stellar work !!

Post by: BLACKHAND
Ok so I may look at mounting a stormbolter under the headlight, I am still trying to keep away from mounting guns on the sides of the bike to keep it's slim "harley" type shape. @Anung un Rama - I realize the cigar is just a lump of GS....but its so damn small!! honest its like 2.5-3mms long!! I intend breaking it off and reglueing it tonight in a better position as it is not quite in his mouth as it is @Santobell - Come on man! Who doesn't want like 10 armies on the go at the same time Ok so I only have two armies and a bunch of commissions but sometimes it feels like 10. I would love to see a stubby "Weapon X" style armour, course you would have to fend of a ton of squat army rumours

Blackhand, do you ever get tired of being so ridiculously awesome?

I really doubt he does Manchu. You should see the shoulder pads, shields, and arms he made and cast for a project or 2 I'm working on. Great stuff all around.

Some people would be too modest to reply to the last few posts....
.....I am not one of them.
No Manchu, I do not tire of my awesomeness, ridiculous as it is
Oh and congrats again on your ascension to MODhood, I see you've been poppin' and Lockin' already, Fine work sir, fine work!
In case anyone was wondering I did get some minor work done last night
Extended the bottom exhaust to meet up with the engine block ( Thanks WhaleMusic I missed it first time round!)
Repositioned the cigar in Logan's mouth
Began adding detail to the extended forks to tie it in to the rest of the bike.
Added some GS feathers and Sabre tokens to the rider's legs and chest.
Also test fitted the stormbolter between the forks tucked under the headlight and I think I like it better than the wheel arch.
So tonight i should be able assemble the nearly finished bike....hopefully.
Cheers

Lol, so humble is he.
I'm actually glad you missed em. I typed and deleted it like 4 times before posting it. I thought it sounded a bit, I dunknow, douchey. I kept using the "Excuse me sir, do you have any Grey Poupon?" voice in my head (youtube it).

Damn Blackhand! I wasn't all that bothered about trying out my own conversions, but your blog is truly inspirational.
I now have big plans for my dreadnaught, might pm you for some help if you dont mind as this will be my first attempt.
Keep going buddy, great job.

No worries Hangfire, I always like to brainstorm ideas as I end up with as many ideas for my projects as for the person I am talking to! Oh and don't ever worry about mentioning things I may have missed Whalemusic, I may appear to be basically perfect but I have been told by my Fiance that I have at least two faults...maybe three.

An Angel? Maybe physically....but no I wouldn't say I'm exactly an angel....I'll happily let others say it though I guess my major flaw is my endearing modesty followed closely by my inability to accept praise On the update front...sorry I've got nothing tonight. A friend of mine came over and we leeched each others hard drives...holy crap that sounds bad!!! Honestly I am happily engaged I just hate going to the DVD store with my partner..she takes aaaages to choose a movie. Back on topic I did get time to test fit the Easy Rider together and apart from some issues with the custom pad fitting he looks good..well my friend yelled "It's Wolverine!" when he saw it so it has the effect I was going for Will get some pics up tomorrow night..I think Cheers BLACKHAND

Where are the floating castle updates damnit!?
I have a general dislike for marines, but I can appreciate the cool conversion workage!

I'm really not sold on the cigar. I think it looks plenty like him without it. But then I never liked cigars on otherwise excellently modelled Angry Marines either. Something about it just jars with the whole SM vibe and you don't have the excuse of a parody army to hide behind here.

@tortured robot - I know, I know....those dirty Skaven! I have been stalling on them the last couple of weeks. Partly due to receiving the Ikit Claw modelling and carving off his power claw and being pretty disappointed in how it is posed. I have spent a few evenings trying kitbash a figure that looks realistic but I haven't liked any of them. I may end up putting it aside and moving back to the castles till inspiration strikes again. @Morgrim - I've never seen an SM with a cigar before but part of why it may be jarring for you is the era that Wolverine was introduced to you. In the 80's when I first read the X-men comics Wolverine ALWAYS had a cigar in his mouth!, he would fight while smoking, drink (yes he was a boozehound!) while smoking and woo the ladies while smoking! There was even a scene in antarctica where he was tracking a lost X-man by scent, WHILE SMOKING!, another x-man asked him how he could smelll anything while smoking a cigar, he simply says, "Practice" Now your moden day PC Wolverine may not be seen too often with a stinky fat cigar hanging out of his mouth but the "cool" wolverine in my head always does I'm not going for parody here, but I have been having fun with the marvel characters, do you remember the deadpool assassin from earlier in the thread? Sorry, early morning wall of text over! Cheers BLACKHAND

I know right? Sheer...Total...Coolicity
Anyhoo, I have a few pics of where the Easy Rider is at the moment,
Have begun adding a GS lion pelt, draped over the seat and packs.
Had to rebuild the hinge between the forks and the gas tank as it was too weak and snapped off while I was handling it.
My friend convinced me to try adding some extensions to the mufflers, still not sold on them, what do you think?
Damn just saw that one of the cuffs on the fork had slipped before I took the photo..this will be fixed, honest!
C&C is welcome of course!
Cheers,

Coming along nicely Blackhand. I like the new, beefy forks.... makes the bike look much more substantial and "battle worthy". I also like the exhaust extensions. They change the shape of the bike in profile and make it's connection to a standard bike less obvious. Also it would seem an obvious point of modification for a bike like this.... can anyone say Holly glass packs? (don't know if they make motorcycle exhausts, but you get the idea) The only thing I don't like is the thing in-between the forks. Is that a gun? Looks like a block of swiss cheese...

Ok, massive apologies here BH but I'm going to sound like a bit of a fan-boy douche. When I asked for something special I really had no idea you would produce something of such an awesome calibre. You've really added a lot of character to what is essentially the same boring biker model from 15 yrs ago.

Lol, Thanks Gits! I was expecting Rama to get on and pop my little ego bubble but you beat him to it
I may have been hasty in drilling out the barrel of the stormbolter, and the fact that is a SW bolter and is covered in skulls and stuff might be making it hard to recognize so I will go back to the drawing board with the weapon.
And Lennysmash, I really just wanted to do something worthy of the gift And yeah what's with the entire SM range getting updated every week and yet the bikes still look like a box on two wheels?

Don't even get me started, my other army is Eldar, so seeing the new reavers makes me cry when I think about the 20yr old jetbikes and 15 yr old vypers of the CWE.

Wow, just Wow..I can't believe you typed that and didn't see it...or maybe it's just me again
And don't worry I am looking at possibilities for weapon mounts..just maybe not a Lascannon between the forks

Just like getting your partner addicted to games so you can justify playing them yourself.. I'm speaking from experience here.
Yeah giant Las-cannon between the forks the new phallic symbol of the 41st Millennium.
hmm I really should post in my blog well not right now I'm off to spend Birthday money on stupid stuff like Fable 3 and more Stompa Parts...
