True - as stated in the berzerker background, it happens that they sometimes fall upon their own blades in case no one else it at hand. How very fitting.

You should include summoned daemons in your army, but not regular daemons... bloodthirsty Khornate terracota warriors
now that's awesome!
also, for friendly games you always could invent your own rules that aren't OP or weird. That should spice up the gaming a little.

As soon as I've finished the samurai I'll be building a soul grinder and 10 bloodletters for a battle I've got coming up in a couple of weeks. I'll be going for a 50/50 split of CSM's and Daemons but using the Daemon codex (so deep striking them all in). Don't want to give too much more away in case my oppo reads this!

I've got a few Rhinos to build (and will probably get some more), as I said earlier, my emphasis at the moment is going to be building rather than painting as I've got so much stuff to do. My previous thinking was to build something and paint it before moving on - I like to battle with painted minis - but I've also got lots of stuff I want to unleash that's still in kit form! So I'm changing tac this year. And to start with here's the soulgrinder I built today...

You should make the soul grinder look more khornate...
bigger horns, khorne icons, axes and skulls... loads and loads of skulls.
43399
Post by: monkeyh
You're right slugga', I probably will add something to it to make it look a bit more Khornate, but at the moment I just wanted to build it so I could use it in a battle I've got coming up. It needs a bit of work with green stuff etc to hide the joins. Half way through building a squad of bloodletters at the moment.
Build and paint is my preference Git's, but I'm just sooo slow at painting. Having said that, whilst I intend to build, build, build, I'll try and slip in some painting as well.
Sorry about any confusion caused with the name change, just thought I'd keep this thread going rather than start afresh. You never know, it may eventually run to a few hundred pages like a certain persons Mantis warriors thread
@ Skippy - I assume you're refering to the samurai rather that the soul grinder - not sure Tripitaka would want to rideto India and back on one of them!

Not much to report, or rather not much for you to see. Build a unit of bloodletters ready for next weeks battle, and I'm putting together a few Rhinos, just been painting the internals. I'm not sure this 'just build stuff and not paint it yet' is really going to work for me, I keep looking at the soulgrinder and thinking "needs more skulls - needs some chains and spikey bits - needs painting!" Hoping to also start painting Fluffies internals soon too. I know that sounds gross, but for those of you who don't already know, Fluffy is my Chaos Warhound.

As for the mr. Soulgrinder, you could make spikes come out of his body, maybe a skull coming out of his mouth and maybe even axes in his front arc acting as a dozerblade of some sort.

Not made much progress on Fluffy - currently painting his innards. I'll post some pics once I've got something worth showing.
Battled at the weekend, sorry the pics aren't very good, but we had a good time. 2500pts of Space wolves and Crimson Fists vs CSM's and Daemons. They played it fairly cautious, I took my usual gung ho approach. I pushed up on the left flank but their jump infantry kept popping in and out and made short work of a squad of 5 chosen all armed with meltas. Sadly my Samurai Berkers were shot to pieces attempting to assault an objective deep in enemy territory, as their vindicators had cripppled the samurai's ride, they had to slog it on foot right into the jaws of the beast! I had a small squad holding onto an objective deep in my own half, which left the one in the middle of the table and the one on the left. Their dreadnought tied up my troops on the right, and a marauding landspeeder was knocking out stuff (inc my Landraider and deep striking soul grinder) in the middle. Deep striking all my bloodletters on the left flank resulted in contesting that objective . The real turning point arrived in the form of Uraka the warfiend. With the aid of my Daemon prince they made short work of a few terminators in the middle, Uraka then took out their Landraider and in the last turn the landspeeder. So we ended after turn 5 with one objective on the left being contested, them having one and me having two as I'd moved Berzerkers into the middle - victory was mine! - this time.
Hopefully having an apocalyptic battle next time, one of my mates has nearly finished building his gargant so I'm trying to get Fluffy ready too!

Thanks everyone. I've been thinking about what colour to paint Fluffy, Mrs monkeyh suggested afterburner fade (yellow through orange), I've seen a warhound done like this on Google images and it looks pretty good, but I was thinking something a bit more old and rusty looking. Any suggestions? The colour needs to fit in with both my Khorne and Nurgle armies but I don't want to specifically tie him to either one.
47327
Post by: whigwam
I would think an orange-brown rusted metallic would straddle the line between the Khorne's dark reds and the rotten browns and greens that typify Nurgle. This would be a good basis for making things look ancient, corrupted, and generally "Chaos-y."
Amazing work on the crew, btw. If that's the inside, can't wait to see what you do on the outside.

If you can make the red on it look like fleshy bits, or the blood of a thousand unfortunate martyred enemies, (legitimately, preferably without stringing 70 corpses off of its hull), you may have what you are looking for. adendum: extensive refurbishing (re-welded plates, re-attached plates, freshly-bolted on armor to the point where it looks orky, but cleanly done to make it look like a considered job... It makes sense for a khornate perspective, to thrust it back into battle repeatedly as fast as you can, and from a nurgle perspective it looks like minmum effort maintenance.... trouble is it can look orky, and i'd be terrified of attacking something so expensive...

Here are some more pics. I've finished painting all the internals. The final picture of the whole torso is not glued together yet. Sadly, my magnets have still not turned up, so I wont be able to finish the build this weekend. You wouldn't believe how badly the two main parts of the body fitted together. I had to scrape away loads of material for a decent fit (even after originally remoulding parts in hot water). And by the way kids, if you use a really sharp craft knife to do this CUT AWAY FROM YOUR FINGERS. A sleep deprived monkeyh got a bit carried away at 3am, and received multiple wounds, failing any armour saving throw - mind you I always say if a jobs worth doing it's worth spilling a bit of blood for. Anyway, pictures....

I think my original target of finishing the build this weekend may have been a bit ambitious! (even though I now can't anyway due to magnets not turning up ) Built the feet and preped all the leg parts, so I may have a pair of legs built tomorrow but it may take a while to fit all them little pistons - maybe finish build in the week (depending on magnets arriving). Ordered a load of skulls off e-bay the other day, some of which I'll add, but these are coming from China so may take a few weeks.
43399
Post by: monkeyh
Quick update - got the legs built (still got to fit all the pistons though). The armour isn't fixed on as I want to paint it all before it's glued in place. Also, got me a new display cabinet at the car boot sale today (the one on the left of the pic) - a bargain at 10 quid! Room for at least another couple of hundred Berzerkers!

It's just flesh paint washed with skin wash ink then red ink and highlighted with more flesh paint. Some areas I washed a little green or purple ink in too just for good measure.

aah, cool. i'm thinking about getting a chaos warhound in the future just to have as a display piece (or if i like the look of the rumored chaos legion codex) how hard is it to build?
43399
Post by: monkeyh
To be honest building it hasn't been too bad, I found the legs and all the pistons fairly straight forward, the worst bit so far has been the body where I found the parts didn't fit together too well - even after softening parts up in hot water. Had to use some green stuff to fill in especially around the bit between the two internal compartments. I've actually now ground to a halt until my magnets arrive. Whenever I check the tracking record on the Royal Mail website it tells me the parcel cannot be tracked until it's been delivered??!!! WTF!!! Why would I want to track it once I've received it? I want to know where they are now - not once I've get them!

Titans need a base too...
You need to buy it for them from a hardware store etc.
I get my large bases from Hobby Point

Not sure about a base - if Fluffy stands up OK on his own I probably wont worry - but we'll see how it goes. If the magnets don't turn up soon he wont be getting built any time soon anyway.

What if you magnetize fluffy to the base aswell?
You could even build the base as a diorama, and whenever you are going to play, just take fluffy off the base and put it on the table.
That would be a pretty awesome thing to do.

10 & 20mm round ones, should be big enough to magnetize the body, head and weapons. Unfortunately I need to wait another week before the supplier will send replacements!

Kind of. It was more actually for ease of transport etc and magnetising the weapons so I can change them round and accomodate the inevitable 'weapon destroyed' results. Hopefully gonna add some paint tomorrow - trying for rust + green.

Post by: monkeyh
There was great excitement today - a parcel arrived! But it wasn't magnets But it was a load of skulls!
Anyway, for the armour - all paints are Vallejo and you'll need an airbrush, it goes without saying let one coat dry before applying the next stage:
I primed Fluffy white but any colour will do.
Mix 'rust' and black airbrush paints approx 50/50 and spray the whole thing.
Then, lightly airbrush gun metal all over - do it unevenly to get slightly different tones of colour on the armour
Then VERY lightly spray with very thinned yellow ink, then very thin purple ink - again spraying unevenly to give different tones of colour.
Then spray with satin varnish.
Then spray with hairspray.
Then spray on your desired colour - Fluffy was done with a mix of interior green airbrush paint with a small amount (20%?) or regular dead flesh paint mixed in to lighten it up a bit.
Then get some warm water and an old paint brush and start scrubbin'! The harder you rub the more of the colour will be removed - this gives it the worn paint effect - but don't scrub too hard or you'll go right down to the plastic!
Then wash over light and dark rust weathering powders (I used the MIG ones) by mixing it with water and just brushing it on, paint it on thick if you want a heavily rusted look, add more powder depending on how rusty you want it to look.
Finally airbrush with some more varnish - I actually used matt varnish - Job done!
It sound alot of work but it's actually very easy to do.
Now for updates. The body is essentially done although not fixed because I don't have any magnets yet!
(I'd like to just big up the guys at 'Gfts for Geeks' - ordered a load of Daemon stuff from them last weekend, still waiting for one item that was out of stock but the rest arrived really quickly, good prices and very reasonable delivery price too - thanks chaps!)

No, but really that looks amazing
Makes me want to get my DKOK one of the imperial versions.
You should do the sensors and visors with Blazing Orange (or equavilent).
It would give Fluffy some "shock" colours and would fit with the nurgle theme.
Also, check my gallery for the Nurgle Super-Heavy. You mght get some last minute ideas.

Turbo laser time! I've gone for the 'gets hot' look. I wanted it to look like the body was translucent and you can see the laser power inside - besides - Slugga wanted some colour so I give you colour! Nearly finished the plasm blast gun too - going for blue OSL on that.

Cheers slugga - here's the plasma blast gun. Also news on the magnets - as 15 working days has elapsed they are now officially 'lost' and some more are being sent today - so I could have Fluffy built (if not quite finished) for this weekends Apocalyptic battle! Also I've just seen the new Decimator Daemon Engine on the FW website - you can bet your pants I'll be having one of those in my Khorne army!

OSL is my demon... I'm wondering if the area in the very middle of the top of the gun should be glowing though.... wouldn't the parallel structures flanking it block out the light?

It's actually mostly drybrush work - I started with the airbrush, then shaded with ink, and then finished with drybrushing.

there we go, 'twas the lighting after all. It looks much better now. still not sure about the OSL on it though. It puts me much more in mind of frost than light, but i have this problem with blue in general, so its a bit of a moot argument. the twin lasers put me in a seething rage of jealousy though, those are gorgeous.

Glad you like it after all poda_t, although I think you and varl have a point - it does look a bit 'frosty' - with hind sight maybe I sould have done it red or green - but hey, it's done now and I'm not repainting it!

Battled today - Fluffy performed really well. Sorry the pics aren't that good. 4500pts Orks vs CSM's. His plan was simple, charge everything forward and overwhelm me with sheer weight of numbers, my plan was equally simple, keep them at arms length and blast the crap out of everything - and it worked quite well for me - well to start with. After about turn three I thought I had it in the bag, his super kustom battle fortess was wrecked, my scorpion had his gargant tied up in the middle, and Fluffy and the plague tower were causing chaos. Then the scorpion got destroyed (by his killa canz of all things) and the pendulum swung in the orks favour. I couldn't believe it when a mob of ork nobz destroyed the plague tower which had already lost a few build points, I was running out of troops and armour and suddenly battlewagons were disgorging loads of the little green blighters. In the end it was two objectives to one, a narrow win for the orks. Great battle though and good fun had by both sides - and I'm pleased to say Fluffy came through it unscathed (void shields are great! Wait 'til I get a reaver which has even more of them!)

@ Miss Dee - If you're asking is it toxic or nuclear waste? Yeah OK it should really be toxic (a skull and cross bones) but I think the Radioactive symbol is instantly more identifiable even if I haven't painted it very well.
Went to the FW open day on Sunday - the new Storm Eagle is lovely! I may consider a chaos version at some point. Also keep an eye out for the new spartan (based on the old MK1 land raider but with a longer body) It's a really nice kit - and it weighs about as much as a house brick so if you're loosing you can always bludgeon your opponent with it.
As a result of that visit and other things I didn't do any painting at the weekend - so I'll go and get on with some - as I want to start new projects on account of me adding a few things to my pending pile.

No painting to show (although I am halfway through painting a herald of Nurgle) but I have been busy! Battle planned for next month, and I've been telling my opponents for ages "It'll be all Daemons next time", well this time I'm determined it will be. So here we have a unit of Blood crushers and a unit of Daemonettes (Slaanesh isn't really my thing, but a mate bought these for me ages ago and they're really nice models). Only another unit of bloodletters, two blight drones and a blood slaughterer to go! Then I can get back to painting stuff - there's a lot of grey plastic in my display cabinet at the mo' and I don't like it!

Battled today - 2500 pts Daemons vs Wolves and Crimson Fists. Sadly I lost heavily. I got shot up pretty bad before I could get my Daemons into close combat. Good game though. Trouble is I lost a unit of plague bearers and Uraka in deep strike tragedies. I think I need to rethink my strategy - perhaps risk deep striking all the heavy stuff first to try and open up all the Rhinos. When I did get into close combat I kicked ass - it just didn't happen much - not enough shooty stuff either - well, those are my excuses, here are a few pics:

I'm back! It's been a long time since I've posted on my chaos thread, but I've spent a lot of time working away. Two weeks in China, then a week at home, then a week in Mexico, then a week at home, then three weeks in China and a week at home before a weeks holiday in Scotland hasn't left much time for painting but I'm finally back on program! Battled with the new rules for the first time yesterday against space wolves and blood angels (not too tough then). Sadly I got hammered. I'd built my 2000pts around taking and holding objectives but we ended up playing an anihilation (purge the alien?) game. Blood angels deep striking right behind you on the first turn is no laughing matter (not when you're on the receiving end anyway). Although my chaos lord did alright with his bloodfeeder (+2D6 attacks) taking out 8 blood angels in one round! I'm now looking forward to gettingmy hands on the new codex - some of the new models look nice - I think I'll be giving them a go. Anyway, here's a rhino I've just finished. good or Bad ??? the new Dex?
43399
Post by: monkeyh
When I first looked through I was like "WTF! they've changed things that worked and made them worse!" The things I'm most unhappy about are the fact that mark of Khorne no longer gives +1A, icons no longer allow you to deep strike without deviating, and berzerkers have one less attack. These are things I relied heavily on. So now I have to rethink. I've been doing some sums. Most stuff is about the same points value, or in some cases a bit less, except terminators seem to cost more. Raptors are cheaper, bikers are way cheaper - so I may be investing in some of these. I like the fact that if dreadnoughts - sorry - 'helbrutes' go crazy you no longer target your own troops, defilers are better but more expensive, and with how they've changed the options I'll have to do some remodelling. The more I read it the more I think it will work, but there are still some things that suck. I think it will work best if you have an army specific to one chaos power, as things like berzerkers, plague marines etc are now elite choices but you can 'un-lock' them and make them troop choices if you have the appropriate HQ choice (i.e. Kharne or a Khorne lord to make bezerkers troop choices). There's a lot more options but we could have done with more transport choices (still would love to have razorbacks). Also only havocs can have flakk missiles, would like this option for all missile launchers. All in all, I've decided to reserve judgement until I've actually battled with it. Unfortunately this won't be for a while as I'm working away for the rest of the month.

Great army, really well done!
As for Zerkers, yea they lost that 1 base attack but gained 2 or an additional if they get charged. So on the charge they have 5 attacks a piece, or 3 if they get charged. Problem is they still just get shot into small peices because of no assulting from rhinos so :/

Actually, Chaos Terminators are the cheapest of the Terminators in most situations AND you get the ability to add marks.
· A basic set of five CSM Terminators will run you a little over 40 points less than the SM/ BA/ BT counter-parts. They're even slightly cheaper than SW. Granted, CSM and SW come with power weapons and not power fists, so it's not a completely fair comparison.
· A set of five CSM Terminators with 4 power fists and a power weapon for the Champ will run you 15 points less than SM/ BA/ BT. For 25 points more you can get a 2+/4++ save. For 30 points more, you can give them T5 with a 2+/5++ save. It's not ATSKNF, but it's useful in a different way. It's my opinion, but debatable, that storm bolters are better than combi-bolters.
Yeah, CSM lack some sort of answer to a CML, but I'd rather have the Reaper Autocannon over the Assault Cannon and the ability to take combi-weapons.
I might be in the minority, but I'm actually quite happy with the Chaos Terminators. Could GW have done something better or included options for cultists Terminators? Yeah, absolutely. There'd have been money in there for them with more Finecast upgrade kits, but they didn't, so we have to look at what we DO have.
By the way, your modeling is absolutely awesome. I borrowed the chainsword halberd idea because that just looks badass. Can't wait to field it.
43399
Post by: monkeyh
Cheers for the termie facts kcwm. I'll still be using terminators as I've got loads of them (including my favourite unit with LC's - which will be expanding to 10 at some point) - but I've never had my hands on the other codices to compare (even though I battle SW and BA most of the time. So are you prefering the new CSM codex to the old one? I haven't battled with it yet so am reserving final judgement. Glad you like what I'm doing, feel free to pinch as many ideas as you like - I do!
43399
Post by: monkeyh
OK, so it's been a while since I've had anything to show. Anybody whose looked through my gallery may recognise this. If you've read the new CSM codex you'll know you can't have a defiler with an extra power fist and a T/L autocannon - so I had to modify this chap. Power scourges sound cool - S8 AP2 and they reduce your opponents WS by D3! He had to have one. I just had to build it from scratch as the one you get with the model is rubbish. This is what I ended up with:

So this guy will be leading my chaos army in the next battle. I'm quite pleased with how he turned out, although I have seen better. Nice mini though. Daemon prince next.

Nice work. Is all the stuff on the cloak free-hand?

That mini has that pattern built in on the cloak; it's slightly raised from the rest.

Yes, vanadium' is right. I only wish my free hand work was that good!

So I'm battling on Saturday - first play with the new Chaos codex - 2500pts against Orks who I rarely prevail against. Anyway, I've just finished this bad boy who will hopefully be opening a big can of whoopass on the day! I'm also gonna try throwing a couple of cuddly chaos spawn into the fray (as well as some cultists) as cannon fodder to soak things up a bit whilst I use heavy support to open up all the trucks in an attempt to empty out contents and give them a good pounding before the inevitable close combat!

Victory was mine! A good start for the new codex - to be honest it was fairly close at the end, we were playing big guns never tire and I only won by virtue of getting more victory points by killing off a couple more heavy units than they did. Highlights for me were Daemon prince destroying a unit of nearly 20 orks in one go (got a high roll with his daemon weapon, they died, ran, then were caught by a sweeping advance) then taking on and killing three killa kans - sadly he was eventually overcome by enemy fire. Also the decimator assaulting a battle wagon and incinerating all but two occupants with heavy flamers in the siege claws - then taking out their deffdread in close combat. It was good fun. Now I begin work on some more Nurgle stuff - a winged Daemon prince (they rock!), bikers, assualt troops and heavy support. The Khorne side of my army is more than twice the size of the Nurgle half - so time to even things up a bit.

Sh*t do your 'Zerkers look nice, mine are just GM models ...
You should custom make a Kharn, I can't even begin to imagine how badass you would make him.

Post by: monkeyh
Cheers Novelist' - glad you like 'em. I think somebody else mentioned doing a custom Kharne but whilst I like the idea I've already got the original and have got so much other stuff to do it would be well down the priority list! I've started building Nurgle heavy support and assault marines.

Just a quick update, as I said before I've started building the Nurgle side of my army, raptors, havocs and bikes. Here's the first few. The non GW bits are very cool bits from Maxmini (on e-bay).

Hi everybody (if you're still watching!). So I haven't posted for a while but I have been busy! More Nurgle Raptors, bikers and Havocs - a whole load of buildings and have nearly finished my Heldrake. Here's a few pic's. Battled today too. It was really good fun. 2500pts Nurgle CSM's versus Orks playing 'the scouring'. The flow of the battle ebbed this way and that, I thought I was done for at one point then had a really good shooting round, then after my chaos lord was victorius in battle he got turned into chaos spawn! In the end lots of objectives went begging but I lost 2 points to four by virtue of the fact I lost two fast attack units Killed lots of Orks though More pics soon of the Heldrake.....

Cheers Gits'. Glad to see somebody is still watching after me not posting much lately! Battled again today - the Relic, hammer and anvil. 2500pts Khorne vs. Space Wolves. I'm pleased to say a narrow win for me! I have to say the veterans of the long war rule made a huge difference. The Heldrake with Baleflamer did quite well and as my force was mostly close combat biased with three units of berzerkers and terminators with LC's I did OK when I got into close combat. A few pics below. It was pretty nip and tuck, I thought I was a gonner after turn 2 but did well well in round 3. It was close and I didn't have many troops left at the end but a few lucky roles at the end saw me with the relic and a 4 - 2 victory. And with the new Daemon codex out I've got that to look forward to aswell.

Looks like a lot of fun monkeyh... and your chaos forces are looking just great! I usually shy away from really big battles as I find running that many troops makes me prone to making dumb mistakes. Terrific when a game that size comes off nicely though.

Post by: monkeyh
Cheers guys. It was good fun, mainly because it was pretty tight. As far as the size of the army goes, the bigger the better as far as I'm concerned, then you don't need to worry too much when you loose a unit! It also allows you to be a bit more gung ho which is how I like to play it - I'm not one for skulking around!

Battled today - it Didn't go well. 2500pts Khorne and Nurgle vs Wolves and BA's playing the scouring. I think I lacked enough fire power and dice which roll anything above a 2! It was good fun but all over early on when I lost my beatstick (Daemon Prince with axe of blind fury) to sniper fire (of all things). End result 10 - 4. One thing that was quite good, in this mission we didn't flip the objectives over until the end of the battle so we had no idea exactly what we were fighting for! Here's a few picks.....

ouch, that's a lot of enemy armor. how big an impact did the stormraven have on the game?
43399
Post by: monkeyh
The storm raven took out quite a few troops and a dreadnought (helbrute). It had quite a presence on the table, not sure on the points value but as I hadn't anticipated any fliers I hadn't taken any skyfire options, and my flying Daemon prince got wiped out early on so I couldn't vector strike it either. I think having flyers is going to be a necessity in the future - I used my heldrake in the last game to good effect (think I may get another). It adds a new dimension to the game (GW obviously want to sell lots of flyers) which I like - I just hope they don't start to dominate the game.

I think you should make it something magma-like. Dark browns and reds, with bright red and orange crackling/highlights.
But this is just my opinion

I'm slowly getting through them. Not sure what's next - I may have another go at trying to get my maulerfiend painted, just having trouble finding the time with summer here (sort of) and all that.

Thanks Bacon', Gits' and Bro'. I've been a bit slack in posting lately. I'll try and keep it going again, got loads more Nurgle stuff to paint, I've also resurrected a long dormant Eldar army which I've made a few additions to and will be battling with in a couple of weeks.
