Yea, the Moshpit is such a mystery to them, and oddly enough, once youve seen the glory that is the Pit......you say "Huh....that IS what I expected"
OK WIP of my "Nob" so far.
Im kicking around the idea of doing OSL on the klaw. Yes? No? Eat my own hat??

Well many thanks, the blending...was a real bitch to get to the point where I was understanding it I too like it, but Im looking at this like, I need to try an do things Im not comfortable or familiar with to improve my painting skills. So yeaaa

Flinty, your conversions are always cool.

I'd say try out the OSL on something else first KC then if it's fine go for it.

Flinty my good man! epic as I've come to expect! :-)
just shoot me a PM with a good pic of the finished model and I'll work with it :-)

Post by: Flinty
Oh man, now I have to pick one of them... Very happy with how it came out, but to be a bit critical for a second, the weathering kinda fades into the camo scheme, which is realistic, but annoying considering the time put into it, the OSL doesn't work too well as the hole is too deep. On the other hand, I'm really happy with the freehand and the camo scheme in general, the glossed up blood/ichor spatters work quite nicely (in real life, anyway) and the little guy's crazy grin always makes me smile

Just make a mash up picture of it at different angles.

Post by: KingCracker
n0t_u wrote:Just make a mash up picture of it at different angles.
This is what I would do. Take a main picture, and then some "high lights of the model" pictures and stick em together in paint or photoshop. That way you can get everything in there Automatically Appended Next Post: n0t_u wrote:I'd say try out the OSL on something else first KC then if it's fine go for it.
Well Ive been thinking about it and Im probably going to pass. Simply because, OSL, the light is suppose to be slightly darker then the source, and around the base of that klaw, the blue is already pretty damn dark, so I think it would just end up looking weird. Decision made gents time to finish that klaw and move on to other parts me thinks

Post by: SagesStone
Good then, the photo taking part has to be one of my weakest.
3309
Post by: Flinty
@KingCracker - Mashup done and submitted
Regarding the OSL, I wouldn't do anything more to the base of the klaw itself, but maybe run some light blue highlights over the metallic pats of the klaw where it would reflect the light from the klaw tip?
@Vik - It does seem to work nicely as a way to enhance bionic arms. I'm sure better and more ornate versions could be worked up as well, my one is definately a prototype and pretty work-horsey

Post by: KingCracker
Is that whats causing the shakes?!
Voxplayer - Mini picture taking 101 tip. Take a sheet of paper (white or dark) or a shirt (light or dark) and drap them on the seat of a couch or chair. This way theres a nice gentle slope. THEN set your mini down and take a picture where all you can see is the mini, and an endless background of whatever you used for the backdrop. Presto, 10x better picture
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
Is that whats causing the shakes?!
would be my first guess
and at voxplayer... good looking sword... tho the boneparts could look better with a bit of wash...sepia for instance...

That way your sure to get a good one And reaper, thats a badass Captain. Thats one of those I kill with my Warboss so I have the right to some SW trophies

Post by: inmygravenimage
^ Well thanks for the comments and don't be too hard on yourself! The shading on your tabard is great, your face detailing I really like, your basing is interesting... I could go on, it's a great job. Possibly hit the blade and the spiky base bit with some washes - green, or even a glaze medium on the blade, just to tone down the white a wee bit, and brown or black (or both) to crust up the chaosy goodness!
Above all, keep at it: doing painting contests is a really, really great way to push yourself and try new things.

the suits were built for dealing with reactors and the radiation that went with it... being nimble wasn't needed... just being impervious to radiation at high rads.
its an interesting position, and nice dynamics, but having moved in a suit of armour, its hard to see someone able to quite move like that in something as bulky as tactical dreadnought armour (terminator armour for you newbies )
sorry lols...

@Flinty and nerd: Thanks!! He turned out better than I expected- the feet were a royal pain to get. some angles Im still not sure he got right. And geez. Way to be Captain Buzz Killington there, Childe But no really, I know its a little over the top movement wise (I know what ya mean about moving in armor) but I definitely think I wanna invoke the Rule of Cool for him. The concept was too neat to pass up HE spawned from an idea when I was building an arena for the =]_,= Terrain competition, and my mind kinda wandered to this scene of orks vs Termi, and the termi jumping off a rock or something and doing an overhead smash with a TH. Problem was that I couldnt figure out how to do a 2-handed hammer, so went with a shield-bash kinda charge like I have now.

Hey guys, looks like those brushes are indeed keeping moist! i'm so chuffed with the entrants, everyone has really put in a massive effort and I'm leaning towards extra prizes next year to really amp it up! but thank you all so far for your time and passion you have put in these mini's, I can tell that everyone has just squeezed that little bit extra from themselves as it's for this comp and you should be absolutely proud of all of these little works of art!
only a couple days left! so finish off and PM me as soon as you're done! i'm excited to see them all and judge a worthy winner with my other Xfactor judges :-)

sorry lols...
I've moved in armour as well, and if you don't have some agility then you're dead. Unpowered armour that thick would cause you problems, but not only does terminator armour have the normal PA servo bundles it has a powered exoskeleton as well. And while the suits were originally designed fro reactor work, they were still modified for combat in an unspecified way, so I like to believe that means higher rated servos and better agility for combat
I'll shut up now and continue my crusade against undynamic terminators elsewhere

Wish i'd had more time to get a better final shot but only got myself to blame for that, These are the first marines i've painted after finishing a tau battleforce so any c&c would be appreciated, i did order a terminator small shield bit to cover the top of the rope but it did not arrive. Im not happy with his left claw either, i think i might cut off the gs claws and attach some plastic ones to the casing isntead.

Arrrrr Flinty! never having done a comp before myself I shall post up the 1st 2nd and 3rd place getters when voting is done no breakdown this time, everyone has done such good work they should all be winners in my book, but we'll see who come's out with the smoking bolter and foot resting upon their foes!

Next time, we should cast 3. A golden beauty, a silver fox, and that guy that just barely showed up to the party with messy hair and worthless metal but at least he made it and could say that in the end he did indeed make it to the party and did actually beat someone even if it was only one person!

Nah, it takes more than a wandering grot to lay this Nob low. Now there's a sentence I never imagined myself saying...
Had one of those weeks myself ladies & gentlemen, and I apologise for the that impacting on the competition. It's my Mums birthday today, so that's a write off too (I just came on to apologise to everyone for the delay) though I will have them done tomorrow night / Saturday morning.
Note that I'm only able to commit my scores, and not those of the other judges. The process is that the scores will be sent to Our Glorious Leader, High Nerd of Down Under, once he's had the scores submitted Senór Nerdington shall then announce the winner.
I've not discussed this with the other judges, just thinking "on keyboard" here, though I guess that in the event of a tie we'll ask that one of the Dakka Mods give their own scores of the tied entries. If that Mod somehow manages to continue the tie, we shall shoot them with a giant jelly bean cannon and ask for another Mod to score, and so on.
Apologies again for the delay, not long to wait now folks!

Ladies and gentlemen we have gathered votes from the 4 corners of the globe! .... well, Australia, America, England and...... Canada! I have put the data into my Nerdputer and waited patiently while it dissected the entrants images and found secret footage of most of them in compromising positions ... o.k maybe not the last bit, but we do now have a winner!!
I have to say it was interesting to see that all of the judges scoring on 4 criteria with no interaction voted in a quite similar fashion with some very close results, less than 15 points between 1st and 2nd and less than 25 points separated the next 6 entries!
I shall now announce the winner of the 2012 'Golden Bathtub' competition
First place is.... Ramos Asura
wooooo hooo, great job Ramos, the clean paint and extensive conversion added to a dynamic and cinematic model that we all enjoyed! I hope you add the 'Golden Bathtub' on a shelf for all to see and wonder at your mad skills with the brush!
But wait!.... who got second? third? I rummaged through my Nerd room and have managed to secure a small prize for second and third place too
Second place goes to Anunearthlychilde who wins this, a lovely purity seal to remind him that the Emperor is the only truth
Third place goes to Flinty and his prize shall be this rather nifty picture I drew of a dog wearing shorts.
I ask all winners to PM me with the postal address and i shall attempt to mail your prizes soon!
thank you everyone for your encouragement and effort, I shall be hosting again next year if you all want to attend the fun and cheek fest that we have going on?

For those of you who might be thinking of sponsoring painting competitions in the future... you should know that one of the things (from a judges perspective) that made this competition go so well is that Damo gave us an excellent series of judging criteria from which to work. The fact that the judges had scored the entries so closely and similarly is not an accident. Nerdy set out a set of criteria organized in categories with specific things being worth certain points. He also included areas where we could award points for things that weren't as easily defined but where we could recognize things that "just worked well" about a figure without having to assign it to a specific criterion. This way, he can lay out his priorities (as the sponsor) in the types of things we are to judge and the point values assigned to them. There were however, a significant number of points available to the judges for purely subjective assessments. Both tools make for consistent and thorough judging while keeping us focused on Nerdy's priorities for his competition. I encourage Nerdy to share his criteria so you can take it into account should you ever plan to sponsor or volunteer to judge a competition like this. It makes things easier for the judges and increases the equity of the process for the participants. Also keep in mind that I'm a biologist and this method suits my training and mind-set. A trained artist might have a totally different, totally valid opinion of this judging system.

Well, thanks again everyone now i'm keen to plan the next one! so, any ideas or thoughts i'd love to hear from you, anything we can do differently? ideas for themes etc? should it be yearly or bi yearly?
and I also want to offer my heartfelt thanks to the other judges who helped me through hosting my first comp Gits (the voice of reason) Vel'cona (the exhuberant youth) Kitch (well, nothing really can explain Kitch.. ) I really appreciate you all taking the time to wade through the 21 entrants and spend your own time with the rather lengthy voting process! it did seem to work very well and the results being so close attested to that if any of you are willing and able (if you didn't go insane) to judge again or not let me know
I am taking young Mr Gitsplitta's advice and i'm posting up the judging criteria so you can see how many points etc. and what we had to decide upon for each mini
Build: (out of 100)
- Quality of build (i.e neatness) - 20 points
-Adherence to theme - 20 points
-Conversion/kitbashing - 30 points
-Pose of mini - 30 points
Painting: (out of 100)
-Neatness - 25 points
-Advanced techniques - 25 points
-Overall effect - 50 points
Basing: (out of 50)
-Theme/Appropriateness to mini - 10 points
-Build/ Customization - 10 points
-Painting - 10 points
-Effect with figure - 20 points
Overall impression: How pleasing finished mini is to the eye (out of 50)
And that's it we gave points to each section and then added them up to give a total from 300, then i added each score together for every mini and that's how we found our winner!
14070
Post by: SagesStone
