Hi guys and gals! I have been inspired by Inmygravenimage's deathwatch painting comp! I entered but was unable to finish in time so i thought i'd host my own to have a bit of fun and see what you all come up with!
The theme for the competition is 'Squad Leader' this is so you can lavish some attention on single character and it can be from any race or force from Marines to Deamons! it just needs to be recognizable as the leader or sarge from that squad.
Judging will be done by myself, Kitch102 and Gitsplitta and you all have about a month to get it painted, entries close on 18th of October and results will be posted soon after
the judging will be done from a score of 100 on each of these categories:
* Overall paintjob
* Techniques used
* The pose of the model (doesn't have to be a huge conversion but needs suitable for the theme)
* Basing
* Does the model inject a feeling of cinematics and convey his role within the force?
And now for the Trophy! why the 'Golden Bathtub' you may ask? well, while trying to think of something a bit different and a great way to have some fun and a couple of laughs along the way, i was trying to think of something recognizable as a Nerdfest09 prize! I kept coming across comments about my bathtub picture when i washed my battle board! so I decided to sculpt my own trophy for the occasion to make it nice and special! and that way each year i can do another 'Golden' trophy if enough people are keen!
So, without further adieu, now the unveiling of the trophy: the 2012 'Golden Bathtub' for which you will be competing!
Any questions just shoot me a PM
Nerdfest09
O.k here's a list of everyone who has entered to date 28/09/2012 if i've missed you i apologize and please let me know!

I do hope it brings joy to someone with a fancy collection of golden nerds! could look good on a shop awning above a Nuka Cola machine out front of a bath shop?

i guess i will come up with something...

Yeah all Orks want to be the boss, even Gretchin can be until a bigger guy comes along and snaps his neck.

The Red Gobbo? Good luck. That model is so rare. And expencive on Ebay.
But yeah there is a Runtherd model and a Slaver model.
Infact... I'm in. And I'll be painting my Runtherd. Gotta get him done at some point anyway.
Edit: Do we have to provide pics of the model before painting? To prove it is, infact, being painted for the contest?
Should we provide pics during the painting to show the techniques?

14392
Post by: nerdfest09
Wow, I was hoping this would gain a bit of interest but you guys have really jumped in the bath on this one! so thank you!
to answer a couple of questions, one entry per person will be required as well as at least one image of the work in progress during the comp these can be added into the thread for perusal and inspiration for us all!
I'm compiling a list of entrants as we go and I'll post it up in about a week!
I'm glad you guys like the comp! i'll even get a certificate of authenticity made up for the winner!

OK, so I'm excited. Here is the squad, some Necromunda Scavvies, with the leader, a Van Saar Juve (the little guy in the top right...).
They will count as a Penal Squad for my Steel Legion army

Does the model have to be 40k or can fantasy be done? wondering cuz ive stopped canibalizing my lizardmen for my salamanders and have an unpainted saurus champion staring at me even as i type this......
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
For this year it's just 40K as it's what i'm familiar with :-) but maybe a future comp we'll encompass both systems?
24297

actually you should do a sort of mirror/mirror dio like star trek did...with whfb and 40k on each side^^

Vik stop complicating things, WIP picture does it count if the mini is assembled but unpainted
I started one a little while ago, but just needs painting so would the unpainted pic count as WIP

That's fine ldd, as long as it's not painted is fine as a start, and i should also ask everyone to send the finished pics to me via PM so i can collate them at the finale!

cut it off, buut the torso is in 2 peices where the head can just be pushed off for later use

Post by: kitch102
@Melcavuk - is he stood on a contemptor dreads foot?!
49729
Post by: Melcavuk
Spare foot but yes, I like to think that deep, deep beneat the sand there's a contemptor dred buried with its feet in the air
And the head comes attached, I think we both enjoyed converting too much to let that be an obstacle.

Hard to decide which to paint...
3309
Post by: Flinty
Neato, so I've got my choice... well, chosen I guess. I started this guy a while back and this compy is good impetus to get him finished. Just a bit more GS needed on top of his carapace, but otherwise ready to paint. I present General Warfield purging a lost soul (who doesn't look too grateful): The General will be leading my second dakka squad in my Terranwing army. I also re-did the arm-cannon as I really wasn't happy with the first version. This one looks as if it could convert back into an aesome mechanical hand at will. Also the mechanical shoulder was fun to do Much bigger pics in my gallery. Now to get the beast undercoated
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
Looking good! the mechanical shoulder is a nice touch! :-) the posing is impressive! you have some pretty mad skills dude! what's the plans for him? any more converting gs work? or is he waiting for the paint brush to caress?
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
ohoh... flinty has joined... now we are all doomed
3309
Post by: Flinty
@nerdfest - Thanks The only GS work left is to finish off his top armour to match the other Marines I've done. Hopefully get that done tomorrow night.
@Vik - thanks for giving me such a height to fall from I now need to try and find enough time to paint the sucker

Side note, the tub needs a plaque put on it I'm going to use a different camera for the next spread I used an older one for this set, view them in my gallery if you want . Sentinel Squad Leader. It won't stop there either . As you can zoom on the photos in the gallery if you so desire. Thread is sub'd also.

I finished him for games day not that he was even a shade on the quality of some of the other entries but I was happy with my models

well the only nitpick i could find are his eyes... other than that... looks very cool!

I agree, the eyes went from pupil less to shocked, awed and staring and then back the other way a couple of times, he eventually ended squarely in the shocked camp.

ah i see!
i have started painting the combatants... two teams... six against four...i used mainly washes for the build up of paint coats... hopefully that was a wise decision...
the first team consist completly of female fighters... dressed in tight suits... and with a dashing green and purple combo... WIP :
and secondly... the blue team... consisting of battle robots... also still highly WIP...:
these are not both teamleaders... but they are here to show the basic scheme i will paint the leaders for... some variations of course for their position in their teams
cheers, vik

lone dirty dog wrote:It was know't special to be honest but I will still enter if i get it painted in time
What weathering techniques did you use especially on the statue ……. if you don't mind sharing
the statue was done the following way...
Stage 1: firstly drybrushed from black to codex grey with in the following mixtures. 4 parts black to 1 grey, 3 black to 2 grey, 2 black to 3 grey, 1 black to 4 grey, finally 1:1 grey/white.
Stage 2: I applied washes of Gryphonne sepia & chaos black mixed together and thinned. at a ratio of 4:1 Gryphonne/Black), then thinned 2:3 (wash mix/water).
Stage 3: the next stage was drybrush the rough areas where colour would have been applied with pigment powders (artists choice)
Stage 4: follow stage 1 again from 2 parts black to 3 parts grey
Stage 5: follow stage 2 again, but thin the wash to 1 part wash to 4 parts water.
Stage 6: take weathering powders of choice and apply to lower areas, including any place the object may have "rolled" through the dirt. some like to apply weathering powders neat, others like to mix it with white spirit, I do both as each technique applies the colour differently, so just experiment.
Stage 7: drybrush the lower weathered areas with paint of choice to match the pigments. apply just enough to highlight but not drown out pigment.
Stage 8: Varnish.
Hope that helps, I know it all sounds like a ballache but it can be worth it... just take your time.

First Tau grots just amazing and the white against green just screams out at you, nice idea and looks great well done.
AUC thanks for how to very precise, just one question after step 7 when you dry brush will this not strip the dry pigment away ?
53821
Post by: AnUnearthlyChilde
oddly no, it tends to fix. just be gentle with it and take your time... also, if your worried, do a practice run.
even if it strips it away, it will only do it from the high/raised areas and leave it in the recesses, which adds to an aged weathered feel imo.

I have included him in the judging panel along with myself, Kitch102 & the ever popular Gitsplitta to have a rounded panel from eager and fairly new to a worldly veteran scarred from many battles, and I think I'll need every help judging! the entries to date are really nicely done and it won't be an easy task to pick the winner of that amazingly fantastic Golden bathtub trophy!

One thing I was hoping was that Nerdy (who shall forever be known as 'Nerdvert' to prove the fact that there is an inbetween when it comes to nerds and pervs) would next make a statue of himself on the *ahem* golden throne if you catch my meaning? Perhaps reading a paper or something. Hell it could even be that issue of playboy you were just talking about!
Anyway, bringing it back on topic, if any of your fine gentlefolk would care to add this thread to your signature to help spread the word and draw in some more contenders, it would be very much appreciated.

I have been inspired to do something about my lack of air support for my WWI themed all-grots army, so I am working on a unit of Death kopta with big bombs stand ins that are being made to look like biplanes and a triplane. I have the rotary engine nearly done after which I will be building the planes around that. I will share some pictures soon...

Will loot away then thank you
The grot hanging over the head is a nice idea and will look pretty dam cool, you should have the grot holding the target in his hand over the eye.
As for links for GS I learnt the old fashion way, clumpy models and hear say info, the best advice I can give are these 3 things :
1 Use clay shapers they come in different sizes and firmness, great for smoothing and shaping I use hard black and medium grey, one large brush couple of medium's and several small.
2 When mixing your GS makes sure it is uniform in colour and don't use it for about 20 mins after mixing, this might sound weird (I thought so to ) but after I tried it it benefited me no end.
Also I add more blue (darker green coloured when mixed) for larger areas and more yellow for small details (lighter green) it is easier to shape though can take more work.
3 Last but not least when working on a conversion and you get an idea tried to break it down, by this I mean layering work in stages build and add as you go, do to much in one go and it gets messy.
That is one of the best things I can offer as advice as many time I have screwed a miniature up by trying to do to much in one go, let section's dry then go back and add more detail later it easier to work on a set dry surface than an unset one.

I had been using a metal pick/hooked pick/flat poker set.. not to the best reslts, very hard to get fingerprints smoothed out on curved ares of hat for me, I'll have to look into that.
I think I know what you mean about letting it set up for a few minutes before working with it, it seems extremely soft and non shape holding for the first few minutes. I find myself re standing up the same portions of whatever again and again, or accidently touching it ruining all my work.. (like this hat... had it done better... then while sculpting welds on big shoota i stupidly smashed hat over his face into an unrecognizable blob... thereby having to resculpt it on the spot on his head ... )
Maybe I could roll out some more yellow green stuff and work out some pinstripe details around hat, etc. I don't know. I had a green stuff skull on it that I smashed too >.<
It's like one those things my dad would look at me when growing up and just say "I don't think I woulda' told that one on myself."

Thanks.
Would it make you feel better if I said I like the shot for my Dakka blog way more than the one I submitted and usually don't win these anyway?
