Games & Gears Kickstarter: Gaming battle boards that fit you and your needs! (New Video posted!!) @ 2012/12/10 05:20:37

Post by: Surloch

I have backed (just checked and holy...) 61 projects on Kickstarter in 2012.

My wife is already dropping some not too subtle hints about my Kickstarter "Addiction" and I'm under the magnifying glass when it comes to any new backing.

That said, I really, really want help this out so I am going to start waging a subtle, surreptitious and subversive information war over the next few weeks until she asks me "Hey, maybe you should back that project". At which point I will say "Oh do you think so? Hmmm, maybe..." and she will say "No really, I think you should". And I will say "Oh well, if you insist".

Also - I have noticed that some people don't seem able to easily equate inches to feet. The standard gaming table is 6' x 4'. That is the same as your 48" x 72" pledge. It's not immediately clear though so I imagine some people won't realise it exists.

Again, I reiterate that even if you don't do up a graphic explaining the various pledge levels, at least move your pledge descriptions above the stretch goals. Now that it is getting so close to the end of the KS, having such optimistic goals so prominently displayed won't help with the psychological component of getting impulse backing.

You've done a great job on the photo's of the product, the constant updates etc are also something a backer looks for. The obvious customer service focus of your company also really shines through and is reflected in the comments section. At this point, there are only one or two things that could be effecting funding. One is out of your control - Kickstarter fatigue. Other projects at the moment are just higher profile. The second though is stream lining the backing process as much as possible to encourage impulse backing.

This can be achieved by showing the value as prominently as possible. What I mean by this is saying things like expected recommended retail pricing. What value do backers get for getting in on the ground floor. You should also focus on a particular pledge level as being the "Best bang for buck". I would aim for the 6' x 4' option. Show that this is the best way to get a full table sized gaming board.

Finally, if you haven't already done so reach out to some of the past successful Kickstarters. It probably won't amount to much, but it may be worth a try. Send Tre a mail, send Mantic, Reaper, Zombie Orpheus (The Gamers) etc a message asking for them to review the product. Perhaps offer to supply them a board or two to test for you.

Anyway, as always best of luck and here's hoping I can put a pledge in. I think I'll just go the safe option of the 6' x 4' cracked earth if I can convince the wife to go that high.

I just took a look at the KS page and read through the whole thread here.

This is a very interesting project, but there are a few things keeping me from pledging.

Texture aside, what I like about this product is that it is a gaming board that breaks down very compactly. I have a 6x4 gaming board that breaks down into three 2x4 sections, and a skirmish board that folds up into a box for storage. I would love to have a few more gaming table surfaces but storage is an issue. This is exactly the type of product that would work for me.

However, my main concern is how sturdy the board is when the tiles are clipped together. The problem with a 4x4 or 6x4 board is that it is wider than most tables, so there will inevitably be overhang.

I saw that the FAQ on the KS page said that 12" overhang is fine, but my problem with the project is that I have not seen anything to demonstrate what I feel is a really, really important part of the product. None of the videos that I have seen show how it clips together. None show a clipped board being picked up and handled.

For me, that raises a big red flag. It seems to be a very important feature of the product, so why not show it. The videos are flashy without having substance.

As others have said, i don't care much about the texture. I have textured boards, latex mats, felt, etc. I would be interested in a modular tile system that had roads or something, but that isn't what is in this KS project.

It seems to me that this product is really a portable gaming table that is light, durable, affordable, and looks pretty good too. That's great, but I have not seen the product perform, and it seems like GamesNGears is specifically not showing these features of the product.

I'm not saying that this is intentional obfuscation, but it will absolutely keep me from pledging, especially at a time when my wallet is tight anyway.

Is there a short tutorial around for how to connect the tables and what kind of portable containers that could fit these tiles?

Perhaps also a demonstration of how well these tiles fit together and stay connected.

I'd be greatly interested in knowing the viability of these as an on-the-go kind of item.

We (me and my friend) have spread word about this awesome KS on polish WH and WM forums. I hope this helps a little bit and they wont ban us ;-)

I agree, it would be nice to see how these clip are performing.

@GamesNGears
I think you should re-work pledges table a little bit. Sorry but it looks awfull, it's squeezed and illegible.

Good point we will do a video today!! This is a non issue and one we will show on the video. Good points and hopefully it will dispel the above.

Thanks!!

Pledges are slowly rising. Our army of backers are rising to the call. Let's turn our elite number of backers into a fast horde and together smash through the goals. picking up and your pledge will get us there faster.

I also agree that there should be the "sweet spot" pledge level highlighted right at the top of the page. A big ad saying, "GBP 100 gets you 24 clip together modular tiles of one type, enough for a 6x4 board, shipped anywhere in the world!" then the wargamers would see that and immediately go, "that's a deal, I can afford that" without having to search through all the text descriptions etc.

Thank you Szymon!! Every new recruit is needed . We are working on your suggestions. I hope they don't ban you fro the forums too :p. We are aiming for G&G army of a 1000 backers min. We think we can do it. This community so far has been amazing and we hear you. We may not be big yet or well known as others. But our quality, detail and sturdiness of our gaming board is not only great but we think up there with the best and with the products to come hopefully to one everyone goes to for their battle boards.

Our battle ground now is getting pledges. So Thank you Szymon for your help In this front. Let's get our army growing. . We are working on the great points above.

We will add that. We must admit we are not the best sales people. We are though excellent in manufacturing and making high quality durable goods. I guess this is the place to thank all those who have helped us before and during the Kickstarter. This is a truly organic experience with the community.

Should be added soon.

It is hard to judge honesty when a key feature of a product is talked about but never shown. I think people get sold to quite a bit, and most of the KS seems to be selling to me. It's mostly pretty picture after pretty picture flying around with a bunch of shiny colorful stuff to make me excited. That's the problem that I have with it. If the table does not clip together well, why buy it? If it doesn't clip together well, it isn't a board so much as a textured surface and there are better ones on the market.

A lot of people build their own game boards because you can't easily find a 6x4'+ table. If you build a 6x4 table, where do you put the thing? Once you design one that comes apart, construction starts becoming complicated fast. To avoid the hassle, I would absolutely buy a table that could split apart into 1x1 tiles, assuming that it was reasonably rigid.

Otherwise, the product has value as a modular surface, but you don't really get that value in the KS. I understand the reasons behind that choice, but am I supposed to invest in a product that I don't really want to fund a company so that I can get a product that I do want later? I'd jump all over a nice set of modular tiles that clip together in various ways to make a system of urban roads, sidewalks, etc. That would be great, but you don't get that in the KS. You get a great quality gaming board that breaks down into 1x1 tiles for storage and has some nifty tray attachments. Like I said, that's fantastic as long as it holds together.

If it wasn't a KS campaign, I could do a lot to asses the value of the product before I committed to buying it, and I could return it if I was unsatisfied. With KS, I've got to trust. Trust the product to be good, trust the company to deliver. There are no guarantees. GnG has said it is steadfast and rigid, but they have also tended to use the same exact phrasing over and over again, like I am being sold to. This does not inspire trust.

Dear Weeble1000,

We will get a video done today as you have suggested. This is a non issue to be honest but one that we are happy to demonstrate. To be honest it is not something that crossed our minds since they are good as we have stated on our stress test.

Video to come soon =D. Should dispel this and hopefully attain your pledge too! But they are strong and steadfast as we have said many times.

Thank you for your comments and we hope by showing this video we will attain your and many more recruits in pledges. Sorry for not doing this sooner. But no request of a video has been made till now. We are very happy to comply.

Cheers!

Dear Darkeldarcrone,

Yes you can and there will be hybrids for that as already planned, awesome idea by the way. This is exactly the type of stuff we want gamers to do. To be able to have thematic battle & play smoothly and uninterrupted at the same time. We hope to hear more stories and ideas like this. =)

So after you have watched this video and you like our Gaming Boards even more please pledge now and lets beef up our backers in numbers. We are very proud of our high end & durable design.

Yes there was some Dark Eldar =P.

Also please note it is very rare in our experiences that players pack out the two extreme corners of the gaming board with their armies/games/battles as their armies/ board-games/battles take place in the middle part of the gaming boards. However we wanted to show an extreme circumstance to show the great integrity of our gaming boards.

Cheers!!

Here is the video again just in case you missed the one above! =P

On the video the joint is still sitting on the table does the table has the same properties when it is hanging out of the table?

ok, that's an impressive video.

@Bacms; Agree, the edge is just on the table... but I would never put something out more than that if it wasn't a solid piece...

The problem with that is that I use my dinning table which is only about 24inches so it need to overhang on both sides

Hmm, could still work, but I wouldn't have over a foot of overhang.
That being said, you could potentially put something down on the edges... but 2 feet of overhang... that's a lot for something in sections. You might need a single piece for that which is essentially another table.

Actually the joint is a few mm outside the table as said in the video. So yes as long as it is approx 12 inches. For a 24inch table were both sides are short stress test is passed. However we would always recommend to Use A bigger surface if you can. Like any board on the surface like that you will have to be delicate. If you play with plastic figs it's fine and metal as well we did an extreme video demo. But in your particular case I would glue some parts of the gaming boards together. I would also suggest to play on the long side of the table. That way only your left and right side is hanging out. As opposed to your whole deployment zone.

Our optimum recommendation (gamers preference) is 6" inch short on both sides, which is what all gaming boards are comfortable in.

Hope the above helps!

I agree with Malaketh, as an ardent And picky gamer which is what I am :p, I would adhere to my recommendations above. Good news is. As we know players like to lean on the boards and place more pressure :p. We are working on developing small stands where you can adjust the height to insure your Games & Gears Gaming Boards have an entire surface. Initially we had this in mind for tournaments, but everyone can have it if they want. But this will be available in June 2013 and if this Kickstarter is hopefully successful.

Dear Weeble,

You can do that, although one G&G clip would not fit straight through the slot they were intended for. If your Games & Gears tray is hanging out of the surface this will not be an issue and you can clip the gaming trays to where you want. We designed the G&G trays to pack out your gaming table neatly, for your cards, or gaming tokens and dice, for war-games, board games, card games and RPG.

However if you are intending to have a surface underneath as well for the trays, we would recommened you clip each tray to each section as in the video as there might be a small albeit unnoticeable bump if you do it they way you have suggested, if there is a solid surface for the Games & Gears trays to lay on. If there is no surface underneath for the trays you are at liberty to clip it where you want on the sides.

Hope the above helps! Thanks.

That overhand video is impressive. Obviously it's not something you'd want to to constantly... It can obviously hold a pile of miniatures, but think about if you forgot for a second and put your elbow down and all your body weight!

Bacms, perhaps getting a large sheet of cardboard to overhang your dining room table, puttin the Games N Gears boards on top of, would provide enough extra strength and stability for a 12" overhand on each side - while also protecting your dining room table from scratches and dents.

Absolutely Judgedoug great comments and great suggestion this is something I would do. If I were to play on my dining room table.

It is also important to note that we went to a bit of an extreme in the video. It is very unlikely in your games according to our experience in playing many war-games that you will actually have that many models on the extreme corners. Usually players deploy 12", 10, 8, 6 inches in roughly and the games usually end up in somewhere in the Middle of the board.

However we know that your models come first as do ours since we love the hobby of miniature wargaming. So best to insure you have taken all the steps as mentioned above.

Thanks.

Your video about how sturdy the board is hanging over the edge of a table convinced me. I pledged for the 4x8 board.

Hopefully it gets funded.

Dear Kirasu, thank you! We are really proud and super excited with our boards. We have an awesome design team here @ G&G. We just want you to play tons of games on our Games & Gears boards. Going to check out your armies you have linked in your sig. Having them on our gaming boards is what it is all about!

@Darkeldarcrone, thanks your enthusiasm is infectious. We are rallying as many backers as we can to our kickstarter. It really is a call to arms indeed! =)

14 days to go and everything to go for. Every pledge counts so we thank you.

Hi G&G !!

Thank you for your continued presence here. All the answers are helpful.

I have a couple of quick questions (forgive me if they were asked elsewhere) ...

1 - I really like the idea of the stick-on grid but was wondering if you've tested it on a painted board to ensure it is removeable (and re-useable) without pulling paint up ? I play various games, some using grids and some not, and being able to switch back-and-forth would be great.

2 - Will / Can you offer the grid in black as well as white? Depending on the board color, one might work better and be more subtle than the other.

Thanks !!

Dear Myrthe, great questions and thank you for asking them.

Answering your questions in the order of which they were asked:

1. We are using the IPAD screen protector covers as test which is exactly what they are, they are one and the same thing but with hex grids on them and bigger. Tests show they are fine on painted boards, However I would recommend that you matt varnish your Games & Gears Gaming Boards before applying the Square/hex grids this is a personal recommendation & I have a habit of matt varnishing everything. So it is re-useable as long as you keep the sheet where the grid sheets initially peel off (another personal recommendation or keep them on the battle board). However over time if there is a continuous peel on and off switch to other boards the self adhesive side would slowly erode which is only natural. However in spite of this you have some super low cheap rates for our Hex/square Grids so we would recommend to bulk buy so you have at least half a decade or more of usable Games & Gears grid sheets.

2. Good point!! We will offer both colours black or white (thanks). We would recommend to bulk buy these as you can use these for campaigns and other uses to. We will update our Kickstarter to reflect this point!!

Let me know if there is anything else. =)

Awesome, we want to create an online gallery with players armies on our battle boards but there is Dakka Dakka to do that on so we hope that will be it =D. It might be kind of sad but we will spend hours pouring over the galleries and looking and everyone's armies and what paint schemes people have come up with on our battle boards. This excites us =D

Because we can and are able to: we have just added two colors to our hex grids. Black & White as we can print both colors =). Special thanks to Forum member Myrthe.

I made a mini pledge for a few board sections. Would have got more but I am growing tired of spending so much on kickstarter and having nothing to show for it. 6 projects backed but nothing delivered yet. Time to go back to the old fashioned way of buying stuff that is actually available I think!

Hey commander Cain,

We know your issues!! We also have backed other projects.

The reason why our Initial KS goal is so high. Is this:

1. We would not put you at risk
2.Nor would we put our business at risk.

Lets be honest here we know psychology like some (but not all) other projects if we gave a super low goal which some do to be honest (as we are in the manufacturing business) we could have probably made our superficial low goal by now and be on 200% or more on our KS have allot more backers as stretch goals would be unlocked faster. But that would be putting you at risk and our business at risk too. If we do not actually acheive the real monetary levels we need to. This superficial tactic can pay off and sometimes doesn't. It's a gamble we will not put you or us in. Why is this a risk to us? Because if we are successful with our Kickstarter it allows us to enter this market and we are in it for the long term & our promise to our customers is paramount.

Our Initial goal and further stretch goals levels do two very real things. First they keep us honest, 2nd they insure we deliver on time. We are very pedantic on delivery on time as 3 things are engraved to our foreheads (figuratively speaking) 1. Good Price, 2. Great Quality 3 Deliver on time. We know the honest road is the hardest road. But to be honest we would never put you or us at risk. It is not mutual nor fair to any of us. Hence our Initial High KS goal. Which will fulfill all our commitments to you.

We also are not sub contracting any of our gaming boards. We make them, we pack and we send them.

Our future in this market is in your hands and the communities via your pledges and backing.

We know exactly how you feel and we are very stoic in our position. Even though we know it is easier to over promise than under promise. We hope so far you have seen this in they way we work. The stuff we can do we will do and the things we cannot do right now, we hope to do in the future.

Also thank you for being part of the G&G army of backers. We want to get to a 1000 + pledges and with the communities blessing and backing we will! Lets all gear up, we are very serious, very committed and good times ahead if we all make it happen.

Sincerely,
The Team

So close to 50% now, one or two more backers would probably do it

Still have hope you'll make it - you've got to 50% with only 70ish backers so really the goal could be met with just 100 more. That's not inconceivable as it would only take a big site or two to spread the news to get that many.

Just an idea for the hexes. If you created a stencil to lay on top of the board people could just lay it on top and spray on a hex pattern. It wouldn't be full hexes, but at least the intersections or sides due to the nature of the stencil.

Timing is my main reason for not being able to back. Too many financial commitments this time of year.
I hope the kickstarter works though.
I'd happily pay a retail price for boards like these. If the project funds and they can get some business flowing, i'm hoping to hop in down the road.

You can read my posts in this topic. Basically it amounts to this ends up being a very expensive game mat unless the transition boards are done, and unlike the GW boards for example, there are no real modular 3D terrain features.

Yes, those are planned, but planned doesn't mean will be released, but I'm not spending the money on these as they don't do the main thing I am looking for in modular terrain boards in the hopes tht eventually what I want would be released.

I must say it has been a really pleasure on our side too. You all on Dakka Dakka have been really amazing. Also proud to be a part of the Dakka community. We will post our various armies on our gaming boards in the weeks to come. As we are committed to This forum.

We will launch our Pro Studio Line next month too. More on that soon! With our firm success (press release on our FB page) we are in this for the long term. We still want the west and wargaming market and you can make this happen.

Yes our initial monetary goal and stretch goals are honest, maybe too honest. But it is the right thing to do and we are blazing with more innovation and products here on our end.

I would like to take this time to wish you all a festive holiday too with you and your loved ones. It is good times ahead.

We still have just under 4 days to go, so you still can pledge in and make the KS happen.

best to you all!

In any eventuality your pledge will keep you in touch with us and with our milestone success in the PRC (Press Release on our Facebook page) you will get your boards for sure and allot more. We still have not reached everyone so time to tell the world and bring this about! http://kck.st/UWp0bt

From Dec 20 on the Facebook page (I assume this is what you're referring to, it's the only item there listed as a "press release"):

Press release:

Games & Gears Deluxe Felt Surface Gaming Boards for traditional Chinese table top gamers.

LONDON, United Kingdom, December 20, 2012 -Games & Gears has announced a custom version of their Deluxe felt boards will be sold in over one thousand retail stores across Peoples Republic Of China autumn 2013. Deluxe Felt Surface Gaming Boards will be custom specific built according to the retailers specifications to meet the Chinese consumers needs for their traditional Chinese table top games.

About Games & Gears LLP, is a producer of innovative high end designs & products for a series of niche and FMCG markets. Its products include Games & Gears Gaming Boards, Pro Studio Line & licensed products. Contact Games & Gears at GamesNGears@aol.com.

Interesting... looks like this may happen despite the Kickstarter not reaching the full goal. That has happened for other projects, too (Exodus Wars)- the exposure of the campaign, despite the failure to reach full funding through KS, opens business opportunities to make the project happen through traditional means.

Dear all,
First of all, we wanted to say a very big thank you to each and everyone one of you. It has been a very endearing and also exciting process. First & foremost a big heartfelt thank you to our backers on kickstarters, who will not be forgotten (more on this down below).

We loved the engagement we had with the gaming community and one we will continue. From just a little over than 40 days we announced ourselves to the world and already we have a fantastic foothold in one market.

We still very much want the western market as we have now a good foothold in the east. So here is the next step for Game & Gears Gaming Board product lines.

With an attainment of a new market outside of Kickstarter this has helped us allot and will continue to help us do many things. We will invest allot in opening a few warehouses in the PRC to meet consistent demand in the years to come. We will also build a dedicated team insure a steady pace of growth & retention for the market. That front is now under way and we look forward very much to it as it grows and demand keeps increasing.

However we very much have our eyes on the western market as well. Our goal has always been a long term one to become established for many decades to come and deliver high end products at an affordable price & also to become your favourite household name in this market. In our books the consumer is king. We have developed, evolved & change over the last 40 plus days because of you, we listened and we have got more installed. As manufacturers we want to establish warehouses and more product line to meet to needs/demands and wants of the gaming community. So here are the next few steps post our initial Kick Starter for the Games & Gears Gaming Boards product line and more:

New Launch in February 2013 Games & Gears Mark 2 Gaming Boards on Kickstarter.
- New Engraved 1inch Hex grids Battle Boards (with our current texture designs)! In addition to our current Battle Boards range
- Sci-Fi City War Battle Board
- 2 types of Battle Board design option selected at every level from 60.00GBP & above. Gives you more diversity. (Higher stretch goal will allow you 3 designs, we suggest you go for larger board sizes =P).
- Early bird rewards for those who pledge early
- Hybrid Battle Boards, unlocked one by one from stretch goals. First Hybrid Battle Board will be our first stretch goal
- More Deluxe Felt Surface Gaming Boards add-ons.
- Our 96 initial backers will be the first to be told of our new kickstarters and we will add 2 extra days in where we will announce only first to our initial backers so they have first come first serve on our really good early bird rewards. There will also be near around the same number of our initial 96 backers for the early bird rewards. We will also bundle a few surprise items for the initial 96 backers who re-pledge on our new kickstarter and a thank you for your long term commitment to us.
- All products to be delivered for June/July 2013. Our New Kickstarter will end in March 2013.
This is in addition to all that was offered in our previous kickstarter. We can now do a bit more so we will.

Pro Studio Product Line to be announced and released in January on Kickstarter. A new line of products that will compliment your gaming boards, models & armies!

There is allot more but that is what we can reveal for now. Of course once we get more solid confirmations we will let you know. For now please like our Facebook Page as our website is under construction (April 2013).

So for now we wish you a happy new year! With your support 2013 will be a Games & Gears year for sure!

To our 96 initial backers, the gaming community & to all for your words of encouragement and well wishes.

Honestly, loyally & with humility… we thank you!

- Games & Gears crew

Keeping the hybrid boards as stretch goals may be a mistake.

I strongly suspect the lack of ability to use more than one tile type and transition from one to another kept at least some folks from backing the project.
