Let us know what you think and we cannot wait to get these Gaming Battle Boards to you.
FAQ:
1.How high are the boards? 2cm
2.Are the boards Hollow? Yes but there is a cross section underneath
3.Have you made tests on how much weight a board can carry before it deforms/bends down)? We have tested up to 15KG per board. Clears stress test. Enough for all your heavy models. Just don't sit on it or stand on it for too long =P. We will do higher KG stress tests, but we are not sure if that is worth doing unless you tell us other wise =P... Do you have models heavier in total that 15 KG combined on a 12" by 12" board? if so let us know and we will test higher levels of stress.
4. Every Gaming Board will have 2 extra clips in addition to full amount you need to the board.
Thanks Edweird, should be any day now. Just waiting to publish it! =) We are hoping as soon as and will make an announcement. Thank you for you support and interest.
Firstly price: A 48" By 48" Games & Gears Gaming board will be 80.00GBP including shipping to the USA, EU, Canada & Australia
A 48" by 72" Games & Gears Gaming board will be 100.00GBP including shipping to the USA, EU, Canada & Australia.
All prices with stretch goals will be on Kick Starter very soon. All our gaming boards are attachable. If we attain stretch goals you will also get X amount of gaming tray and then felt dice trays to roll your dice on (you no longer have to roll on the board) and allot more very exacting stuff more to come.
as we make these ourselves we can offer these prices. One of our goals is to provide top quality @ real prices. Because we want every home to have one of these and make our wargaming hobby more accessible to everyone. All gaming boards are attachable.
Our first wave will be on Kickstarter very soon!! the rest of our products which we already have 18 months to release will be done via the traditional way.
However to for us to do this we need a successful kickstarter your support and pledge would not only mean the world to us but will give Birth to Games & Gears.
Have you got a website or something that we can browse/read through for us unfortunates at work? I can't really view flashy videos as nice as they may be...
Cheers, what are they made out of? They look like injection moulded hard styrene open boxes.
Do they attach to one another to reduce movement? (I guess this may be addressed in the YouTube vid, but alas, looking at YouTube would irrevocably degrade my work output)
Sorry for the delay in response and thank you Panic. Thank you sir!!
They are made of High Grade hard plastic. We have the latest machines & tech with design to produce beautiful texture on our Games & Gears Boards.
Best!!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Just to add: these are also light, durable and the Games & Gears clips. Clips the Gaming boards steadfast together..

Ps, thanks again for posting the pics Panic!!

They attach steadfast and tightly together so there is no movement. =).

Automatically Appended Next Post: Before I forget. All Games & Gears clip come with the Games & Gears Gaming Boards with the prices quoted above. All prices will be listed on our Kickstarter.
Looks really cool. Really like the cracked earth one in particular, seems like itd be very flexible. Could easily paint a muddy color and flock a bit for a grassy look too, Will likely be buying two 4x6 ones if prices are what you are advertising =). Much cheaper and more flexible than the GW one.

As they are now, they're almost a bit too 'specific' looking for me.
I do like the board game version though...
Looking forward to the Kickstarter proper, and seeing what's what.
Good luck!
I agree to some degree, would like to see a desert-y one and a paved/street one as well. Would be cool if you did something where you could transition from one type to another as well. Just some ideas.
Thank you for you comments! Have you seen our Field of War Battle board?
We will have the full length feature video on Kickstarter. Further more we all come from a community background in the hobby. So your ideas, what you want in the future is all great stuff for us. Since each design you see has been hand drawn then converted to 3D and so on.
We are also looking into doing specific boards for gaming companies too as there is allot of interest.
However to bring this all to life it starts @ Kickstarter. So your support and everyone else's will bring life to Games & Gears & the 18 months of products we have lined up already!

!!!! I cannot confirm or deny, but ask you all kindly wait for the main video =D. Although your foresight is very scary =P.
Yes the prices are 100% confirmed and includes free shipping to the destinations mentioned above. Also a 48" by 96" will be 160.00GBP. The other prices for smaller Games & Gears boards are posted above.
Note: There is allot of products to unlock via kickstarter so it will be allot of stuff if this becomes a community backed success. We can give real prices, because it is the right thing to do. By the community & for the community, absolutely.
it's a very interesting idea... I'm put off by scary foreign currency, because 80 USD is totally within my impulse buy zone, but 130 USD is not (which is what current exchange rate is rounded up to a nice even dollar). Yes it includes shipping... idk though.
Thank you kindly for your interest!! Your Blood Angles & Imperial Guard would look lovely on these boards!! Checking out the rest.
We cannot wait to see people posting pics of our Gaming boards with their armies on them. We very much want to get these Games & Gears Gaming Boards to everyone's home. It certainly has increased our enjoyment of playing war games and other games. The attachable felt Dice trays are addictive and I am glad I need not roll on a gaming table again =P.
I'd love to see some "transition" boards like 1/2 Urban War & 1/2 Field of Battle (for example) to give even more variety to the overall boards that can be assembled.

Yeah, I could love if I could have an cobblestone city scape that I could easily transition into like a field of battle...

Dear Alfdante,
Thank you for your comments& interest!! We have tried our best to give the best price we can as these are highly detailed, durable & attachable Gaming boards. Also when you see the stretch goals and we humbly get a great backing by the community the stretch goal products you get to kit out your boards with should largely/hopefully further increase the incentive for you. Regardless thank you for your kind words. Very much appreciated.
I would love to spill the beans. But we hope you will love what we have to offer on our Kickstarter. Which will be hopefully live within the next few days.

Yeah, I see nothing wrong with the product. If you guys could offer those prices in USD (i.e. a US based company), you'd have my money... As it stands, I'm interested in this project and will probably be following it, seeing if I can back it near the end of the kickstarter.
I do have a question. Say the kickstarter takes place during the month of December, what's the turn around time from the end of the kickstarter (and the distribution of funds to your bank accounts) to when backers will start seeing their products show up on their doorsteps? I've backed several kickstarters, and 2 are still within their projected timelines, 1 delivered the goods on time, and 3 were months late, even though I've recently gotten my backing rewards.
Are we expecting like 3 months from completetion, 5, 6 months? What sort of timeline could be given, knowing full well that this might take off and you might have your hands slightly fuller than anticipated.
Great question. This I can answer. Since we make these. We are looking at an estimated April 2013. As you have noted with December and holidays. However we have been very conservative with this and as will be mentioned on our Kickstarter although the estimated delivery is April 2013. We want to dispatch these to you end of March. Since we do not like to keep things in the warehouse for too long as it will just sit there we are looking into doing shipments bit by bit working up to March 2013. However we have to take in delays as well so we have put estimated delivery April 2013 for non painted and May 2013 for pre-painted. If we can deliver these earlier not only would it be good for us, just great customer service and adhere's to our mission statement which you can find on our Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/GamesNGears in the about section. Hope that helps.
Also add, all products are pretty much ready to print on our machines. Since we have done much of the ground work already. We just humbly need the communities backing in large to bring this all alive and kick start a long term future with a great line of products as these boards for every gamer is a long term investment. We have already 18 months of products to be released and working on the next 18. But it all depends on the Kickstarter success. Hope that answers you question. thanks again.
Hello GamesNGears,
Your product video showed up on my Guts N Gears newsfeed as a new sponsor. Is your company simply a sponsor of Guts N Gears, or are the same people working on the podcast part of this new product?
Game boards don't interest me... but I do feel there is an untapped market for 'board gamers' who want something between a 2D cardboard and a full 3D custom terrain.
I am not sure how these are made or if they are individual print like laser cutting vs mold/casting but it seems like there should be a market for 'dungeon tiles' which can be put together like these and swapped around. I don't particularly want tiles to put my boards on, but if there were SDE tiles or Decent tile dungeons with textured terrain and 'black' in dead areas like walls, I could see people having an awesome way to make a dungeon for RPG and board games alike.
If there is no need for molds, and each piece is printed individually, seems like there could be dozens of possible tiles so someone could start with a 4 pack and end up with a 4x4 table of dungeons one day which each tile being unique.
I dunno, seems like a textured dungeon system, there would be a market for it... maybe not.

Dear Mattman,
We are their sponsors and nothing else. We also thank them for their great support. Big fans of 40k, fantasy, Warmachine & Hordes. We are also playing allot of other games to from Wyrd, to Coolminiornot and more. There is allot of good stuff out there!

Thanks for the answer! The similarity of the names and the fact it showed up in my feed had me confused! Best of luck, might pick one up myself
A product related question actually. Assuming a 48" by 48" board, how much space does it take up when it is all packed away?

No worries I can see the confusion =P. We are looking to sponsor allot of similar stuff to get the word out. But those guys are awesome and so are the Privateer Press Games.
Great question.
You can stack all 16 boards to a 12" square. Height would vary on how many you stack on top of eachother.

Fantastic! That's quite compact! Definitely looking forward to see what the kickstarter brings, especially considering Christmas bonuses are next month
Your comments like many others leave us very humbled. We sincerely appreciate your support in bringing Games & Gears to life. For the people & by the people, absolutely!
I am highly interested in this product and eagerly await for the kickstarter, only reservation I have is I do not see an proper science fiction urban set.
I play mostly Infinity for example and the textures offered do not fit the modern sci fi look of it something along the lines of clean future urban setting would be great.
also do the tiles secure with each other in some way? I could not find info on that.
Dear Psychoticstorm, we love infinity @ Games & Gears, heavily into that and 40k for our sci fi fix,our seas of war board can be painted as galactic space with stars, clusters and planets. Cracked earth can also be spinned off as a sic fi board pending you how you paint it. Cracked earth is awesome with infinity. Urban War is pretty good too depends how you paint it
Field of war is great for desert, scorched earth battle.
Also you can add your own bits to personalize the board.
Regardless of the above, I cannot confirm nor deny that there will be additional boards . I cannot wait till you see our Kickstarter.

Missed your last point sorry. Yes all boards come with Games & Gears clips. These clips hold your boards tightly, steadfast and secure.
Correct, we also have An awesome highly skilled pro team. We are very proud of what we have been able to do & with your support pushes us forward. We are in it for the long term if Kickstarter is successful which we very much hope so. We take our mission statement to heart and wear it on our sleeves as well. Http://www.Facebook.com/GamesNGears. Where other markets already have done for decades.
I've been thinking of getting a Realm of Battle board since it's more durable than a pink-foam board, but at roughly half the price I might just have to overlook the lack of hills. (Or consider it a customization feature, or something.)
How hard are the tiles to cut? I'd like to be able to add some sort of a river to my table, which (probably) is going to mean cutting up some boards so I can do a proper recess.

I would kindly advise you too hold that thought and not act on it. .
Alpharius wrote: I think we're going to have to wait and see what your Kickstarter contains!
I'm hoping for an 'urban' setting without cobblestones, and a field less burnt....!
=P, for the Field of War Board. You can always flock it =D. As for a futuristic Urban board. It fits well with certain 40k worlds. That said. I can discuss more and reveal more once KS is up =D.
I think some of us might want to know a little more detail on what *precisely* the board is made of. I believe you said injection-molded as opposed to vacformed; exactly what material used would be nice to know as well.
Whether it takes polystyrene cement isn't much
of an issue I think, but as for durability etc plastics vary wildly.
If answering that would be an issue, could you at least say whether it's PS like, or more 'bendy' like vinyl models?
It is not PS plastic which is cheap and as not as hard. This is hard plastic, however if you purchase an unpainted board you would need base coat the board before painting on it, we recommend Matt black coat.
The reason why it is high grade hard plastic. Is for it's durability, no bend... Unless you sit on it or stand on it :p which I would not suggest. That is what I can comment on. The specific material was chosen for it's hardness, durability and quality. It was design to take on heavy models and terrain and also to stack onto each other for storage. Also for transport.
Kickstarter page to go up in T- minus 12 hours ( or possibly sooner). Final touches are being added!!!
Your support and everyone else's is throughly appreciated. We want our Games & Gears Boards in every home. We are both very nervous and excited as you would as our success and the life of the company will be dictated by you and your support.

Please spread the word as much as you can. you help in this endeavor is greatly appreciated. We hope the community fall in much love with our gaming boards as we have.
We sincerely & humbly appreciate it. Early backers will be in front of the que for shipping within the month promised to all. All your names are being listed for shipping as I type this if this Kickstarter becomes successful. We hope to get these great board to you soon.
Thank you again,
Humbly & best!!

I also think it'd be better if you had some of the tiles blending into others. That would be awesome. It'd certainly pull me in more. I for one would love to see cracked earth mashing in with urban so that you could make a city on the verge of being engulfed by ice or lava . It would't certainly make me more inclined to back.
Absolutely, Each board will have the right amount of clips to fit the entire board together.
We already have used them over hundred times, they give a very tight and steadfast fit. These clips a durable and specificly built for our boards only. Material (hard plastic)

Each board has 8 slots, you can see them in our close ups. 4 long clips for each side to hold tightly.

Also could you make a KS video showimg how these things are put together and how durable/delicate they are?
Great Idea will do!! and will post a new thread as well me thinks for it?
Will do a video of the clips in the coming days (please bear with us on this!!) . Unless you start bending the boards violently the clips hold. Otherwise they bounce out.
You can frizby the small 24"by 24" boards.. clips still hold tight would not recommend it though =P

I wish there was a more futuristic/SF looking table option available.
I think at this point, the only thing that looks like it would fit for 40K or Infinity would be a "Fields of War" board painted in an urban grey color?
Which seems like a waste of the potential for this product.
Having said that, I'm not sure what would look more 'futuristic' - but cobblestones or 'cracked earth' don't seem right for me.
Still, I wish you much success, and maybe in the future you'll have some additional designs that will fit a generic SF setting a bit better!
Thanks for the input. We do have a sci fi board. But It is in the design phase atm. We are quite strict on design and look and it does take some time and wished it was ready for KS but we won't rush into things untill it is ready.
But, thank you for your kind words. We are already thankful to the backers who have already backed us.

Cracked earth looks like a good base for broken streets.
No, it does not, but with the two pod terrain systems available one from warmill and the other from Sarisa it can nicely fit as a colony outpost, even better if the mixed tiles of cracked earth/ field of war happen.
While I understand the difficulties of a sci fi terrain, making a layout that can be arranged many ways with roads that will not look plain is difficult, I am really hipped on its potential availability.
Our Hybrid battle board were made for that... there is more to be revealed..
However we heavily play 40k here & cracked earth and field of war with Hybrids make an awesome Sci fi terriam battle board. Also there are many different ways you can paint the battle boards.
For instance a lava cracked earth board could be a Khonrate wolrd etc.
That said, We are working on a Sci fi specific board. But we have strict process as you can tell hopefully our designs are top notch which we hope you agree with .
Again your words of support have been terrific thank you. Already on 3% and we are very humbled, excited and nervous. =). We just hope we have done a good job and really want other to experience the joy we have had with our gaming boards.

Automatically Appended Next Post: You can also give the Cracked Earth Battle board a glowing green alien effect between the cracks. There is allot you can do.
The Games & gears boards where deliberately design as a base product where you can add more things to it and be totally creative or just have it as it is.
Well I'm in for the 48"x72" option just in time I was starting to get KS withdrawal
Really weird pledging in pounds sterling and not using Amazon payments but directly entering your credit card details I guess this how Kickstarter UK works then.
Quick question GamesNGears if the Hyrbid boards get unlocked will it be possible to get half your boards of one type and half of another - so the 48"x72" option has 24 boards can you opt for 12 cracked earth and 12 fields of battle boards or do all 24 have to be of one type?
If we with the community support we can unlock all the Hybrids. it is something we can do for sure as volume on our machines will be enough to be able to cater even further for that request.
hope that helps and will make a formal announcement when it does become unlocked at that level.
We are by and for the community, so as long as we can do we will do it

if you're taking suggestions anyway: I'm thinking there'd be quite a demand for something to transport this in; even if it's just a bag to snugly shove 24 tiles in with a single back strap (or 16, for the 'pauper' board ). if you're producing sufficient volume that should be doable.
I don't mind making one myself but I can imagine not everyone agrees
It was a great idea and as gamers ourselves makes sense and we can do it at that volume. We very much hope we can attain that stretch goal and get the hybrids to you!!
Amendment to stretch goals has been made.
For the community and by the community absolutely. We also have the advantage of making these ourselves.

yeah,
Great to see you taking the time and answering so many questions!
Makes me want to buy your board even though I already have a board,
Have you got any images yet of your boards mixed in with the GW realm of battle boards? or are you keeping your product clear of GW comparisons?
It could be a real selling point for someone like me who has a GW board but would like to shake it up a little, if the height of the board is the same/similar.
The hollow nature of your boards look like they want to be converted and have a trench dug in them! I'm very tempted!
---
I see that you have a custom tile board pledge level on the Kickstarter. That's pretty sweet.
I don't have that kinda cash, but if I did I'd commission a DeathStar surface tile!
X-wing is played on surfaces 2'x2' up to 4'x4'... The recommended game size is 100pts played at 3'x3'
And there is a gap in the market for a good board. Most people myself included have been printing out deathstar pdfs.
I don't think it needs to mega detailed just lots of rectangles. like the angry birds game If scale neutral It could also be used for 28mm games as industrial planet surface / generic spaceship hull.
Thanks for your kind words and support =). Not a problem, when we say are by & for the community we meant it =). Unfortunately we do not have any GW realm of battle boards. Our dimensions, weight are all different to.
However all we can say is that our detail and quality is top notch and are prices are based on the product not brand name. We are big fans of the GW games. So we hope all of 40k games and Fantasy are played on our Games & Gears Board. We just up a Games & Gears KS thread in this section too. =D.
We could to a Deathstar tile =P. X-wing is an awesome game. =D. Great suggestion
Best!!
The cobble tiles are perfect for what I'm after, so I'll be nabbing at least a 24"x24"
I have a question though; how do the thickness of these compare to the GW realm of battle boards? They look like a close enough match but it might be useful to state it somewhere as the compatibility is a good thing. Sorry if it's already been mentioned somewhere; I didn't see it and can't watch the video from work
I have to keep an eye out for this one. It looks interesting possibly a bit more freedom on the combination of the tiles would tempt me more but let's see.
Do you mention your tile depth anywhere? That should probably be sufficient
2cm. Thank you again!!

The GW boards are 1cm deep and 2'x2', so will need lifting 1cm to line up with your boards. Not difficult. Some cheap MDF or similar will sort that out.
Update: 6% of goal so far in less than 24 hours of our initial start. We are fired up. We hope to complete the initial goal in the first few days so we can kit out your boards with all the stretch goal rewards. We thank Dakka Dakka, the community is awesome and already with your comments have all helped in this endeavor. We salute you!

Cool, it's not much of a step anyway and can be hidden easily.
Why are they so thick? I don't actually mind, I'm just curious
I'm very interested in the prepainted 6 x 4 large scale battle board, until I saw the price! The unpainted one is a very good price but why is there a price difference of £180.00 between the two it's a bit to much for the prepaint, will sit on the fence and see for now.
Correct, these boards are made to last as we want to add to these boards in the next 5-10 years. We already have 18 months of products in the pipeline if the Kickstarter succeeds.
So for those who love our products pledging really is the life source of this project.
Overtyrant.
The pre-painted boards are dearer this is correct. This is due to the time it take to get to the level of detail via painting we want per board. To give you an idea. It takes the same time of making x7.5 6x4 boards just to paint x1 6x4 board. This increases the cost of the pre paint.
Hope that explains the costs of pre-paint, but they do look good =D.
As we have stated in our mission statement we are for the community and by the community.
Pre- Painted 48by72
The Pledge amount has been decreased to 200.00GBP. Limited also decreased to 100 for us to be able to do it @ that price. Since time it the biggest cost to us. Hope that helps!
Whilst our 40k models are very light, we need to show the integrity of the board. Privateer Press's awesome Warmahcine & Hordes metal models are heavy to say the least. Check out of all the large metal models on our Games & Gears Board
As you can see. The board is jam packed with large metal models. Whilst keep its integrity. =D

For a new Gaming manufacturing company we are very happy so thank and thank every single backer. We also hope to get a continuous surge to unlock all our stretch goals. Thanks =)
We are doing some videos today. So we hope you enjoy them. We will also reveal our Sci-Fi battle board which will be part of the battle board selection for our Kickstarters. So they can choose from 5 options. If we hit the maximum stretch goal you can use hybrid battle boards to mix and match as you will be abe to choose 2 designs as explained on our kickstarter.
Thanks again Herzlos. Dakka Dakka community has been awesome and we are lucky to be a part of it. It is because of the Dakka members we will be releasing the sci fi board along with the rest. =)
Excellent that’s good news while I like the cracked earth board and have gone for the 48”x72” option it’s the Sci-Fi board I’m most interested in and I’m glad your adding it as a KS option – hopefully you are going for a tech Sci-Fi look rather than a gothic Sci-Fi look although I understand why you might opt for gothic! I might upgrade to the 48”x96” option (if I like the Sci-Fi set) were you can pick 2 different 48” square sets so as to get the best of both worlds.

Now this is good news, and a smart play given that you're up against Kingdom Death's Kickstarter.
Once the Sci-Fi board is unveiled, you should see backers and pledges increase!

I have to admit I'm not sure what loadout I'll be going for, as I don't quite follow the stretch goals (I can't pay much attention at work). Probably a mix of Cobbles (for Empire Of The Dead) and sci-fi (40K) though.
I was going to just go for 2x2, then thought for another £20 I can go to 3x3, then just another £20 gets to me 4x4, and that should be big enough as I've already got the 6x4 Realm Of Battle board
ETA on revealing Sci-Fi Board. Will be tomorrow 27th November hopefully. This is a great addition as your battle scenes and stories you can tell with the selection we have now really enables you to create your worlds and battle scenes. With the unique Games & Gears Hybrid battle board system all boards can be made seamless together.
Today we are going to shoot some videos on the current battle boards which should be up in a couple of hours.

The stretch goals, pretty much go like this. We first want to load out all your battle boards or Deluxe boards with gaming trays, once we pass those milestones we want to upgrade all the Gaming trays to the nice smooth & classy felt trays used also for gaming aids and also rolling dice (we recommend you have a felt dice tray on each opposing side left or right to roll your dice). Once that milestone is complete we want to kit you out with some extra battle boards (Deluxe boards have some neat too not revealed yet), however these boards will be the Hybrid battle boards. Enabling you to have open terrain battle merge with urban battles and so forth. If we complete all stretch goals which we would love, the next batch down the line is even better. Our success and degree of that is up to you and so far we sincerely thank you.
Tons of detail and sophistication. All Battle Boards come with this high level of detail & quality. If you like what you see and you want what you see. Please pledge now. Link below on banner.

Our pleasure. =). Our design was with the gamer in mind. Taking away all the issues you would have with the traditional textured boards.
Our high end designed products are meant to give you a quality experience where you enjoy your battle on our these lovely detailed battle boards.
All we need now is to get the word out and the community to back us in droves. There is so much more work that has been done. Each battle board in the future if our Kickstarter is successful will have additional themed textures per design so your landscape of the battle board keeps getting better and evolves and develops, enabling you to play better and tell more stories, campaigns and what not. .
29 days left. We need as many pledge bombs as we can get & must so we can unlock more of the future. Which if this Kickstarter is successful is long term and we hope in decades to come it will keep getting better.
Personally we want to see picture of our gaming boards being played on by all of you. This is what it is all about.
Just saw this thread and have been checking everything out and all I have to say is this is AWESOME! I've been playing for awhile but have just started to get into modeling and painting so having these pre made boards looks like it could really spruce up my battlefields since as of now I've just been playing on my kitchen table. Great idea guys and keep up the good work!
Coming soon, hoping today, latest tomorrow. We have a strict process with detail and quality and you will see in this design. All I can say is that I cannot wait to play on this board and for it's hybrid boards .... then it's themed specific boards. It's looking good. As soon as I can post it. It will be on here first!

Which just hope with the hopeful success of Kickstarter you will all be able to experience the same. Thanks again.

If it is as good as we all hope, I expect you'll see a rush of new pledges!
I know I'll be in for either a 4' x 6' minimum, leaning towards a 4' x 8' for that old school 40K table size battle!
I've seen a lot of these terrain kickstarters starting. My question is for boards like this and castles like on another, why use resin? It's expensive and heavy. Why not go with good styrofoam? I have my old GW castle and my blood bowl board that were made of foam. They are light sturdy and it's easy enough to chip away to model damage. It just seams a better material, I've had both the bloodbowl board and the castle for over 20 years, they are very sturdy.
The only issue might be painting, just don't use canned spray paint and it will be fine.

These are clip together, hard styrene plastic, with attachable trays.
Confirmed, These are hard quality plastic. It is light, durable and made to last.
Regarding painting. We recommend to spray on it first to prime it.
We use army painter Sprays.

Yeah,
Very excited to see the new boards!
I want to back this project and a mix of boards sound like just the ticket for me. Some scifi and some Cracked earth.
First off thank you all for your enthusiasm. Just a few more hours!! sorry for the wait!!

Sci-Fi Wars Battle Board. For 40k, Infinity, X-Wing and all your Sci-Fi Battles. These could be an advanced manufactorium, inside a space ship, advance industrial complex, space station, moon base, city complex. Or what ever your imagination can think or style you wish to paint. Whether sci-fi Gothic or else
If we hit stretch goals you will get the hybrid battle boards. So you can have for instance cracked earth & Sci Fi Wars and if we complete all stretch goals so far more themed Boards for each battle board.
Your pledge and support is much appreciated and we hope to get you this battle board to your home . Cannot wait to see pics of your laying on this. Your pledge will make this happen.
Nice, quite intriguing design, not sure if it can be used as a city, but as a doc, starport, indeed installation interior, looks really promising, with hibreed boards it will look even more interesting.
Thanks! We cannot wait to use to play our 40k, Infinity & X-wing battles!!
You can paint it in a gothic style and battle on a high end forge world or upper levels of a hive world. Fits well with infinity. Also great with a X-Wing space battle.

Absolutely, we want this for players to use on their sci fi worlds human or alien worlds. So for 40k players, infinity players and others they can fit it in their worlds. Also depends how you paint it. You can make it very gothic or very futuristic. Up to you. Will Marines hold on to this advance complex or will aliens overrun the complex (for example)?. The Hybrids with this look awesome!

Automatically Appended Next Post: Also can be used for Relic Knights!!
Awesome, just got into Relic Knights too and waiting for my faction next year. I like the fact that it looks like the insides of some imperial warship. Good excuse for my Dark Eldar to raid! Will pick up 4x6 board.
yeah,
That is interesting, not what I expected at all.
And while it will be useful for some, gothic future cathedral, I feel its vertical/horizontal symmetrically obvious tiling puts me off somewhat.
I doubt I'd want more than 1 of these as an objective tile.
I can see that creating a single 1'x1' tile with lots of grand detail that can multiply without creating an easily spottable repetition must be difficult.
But you must be able to create a pattern of ill regular rectangles that when rotated 90 degrees breaks the repeating pattern.
Or without the grand detail and going for a tiling design a grid would be good like a blank space hulk. (Like my aborted press mould effort.)
These are tier one designs for all the battle boards. So the idea is to add to this battle board and give it more breadth and a battle scene feel.
We do have a space hulk board in mind. But we want to show you our capabilities in design and detail as well and also giving you many options to paint and bring it to life. For instance each tile can be painted slightly differently whilst maintaining a strong degree of colour co-ordination.
We hope if this Kickstarter is successful with yoursupport. We can expand our Sci-Fi wars battle board and give you a battle scene where you can expand, create and morph into your own liking.
Thanks!! We are very excited about it. We cannot wait to add to this range. It is very cool as a stand alone but there is so much more to it. Hopefully with the communities backing we will get this kickstarterd for the long term. All your support, comments and pledge is greatly appreciated.
I've fallen in love with the Brick city scape, and the fact the shipping is free to Canada! Perfect for my Brushfire/40k needs! =D
But... This ends about the same time as the Kingdom of Death kickstarter....
My poor wallet.
If I am to make any suggestion, I would suggest a cracked earth title with a grid moulded into it. Would be brilliant for RPG's! Counting on how many spaces fit on a single 12"x12" tile you might be able to convert it into a nice Blood Bowl field... Alot of potential.

Dear Lockark,
Thank you, your comments and the rest of the dakka community really does spurr us on. Thank you for your support and hopeful pledge. This really is a community endeavor and we hope it is a success.
We are actually working on your suggestion as a couple of gamers have got into contact with us on this. We should release something in the next few days. It will be a self adhesive transparent PVC sheets (like the iPad screen cover) which will be 12" by 12" with 1inch square grids. These grid sheets will stick on smoothly and flat on our battle boards. We suggest you paint the boards prior applying the grided sheets.
These sheets will be available on our optional load out. This way you can choose how many battle boards will be for your war gaming andnhow many for your RPG.

I have to admit, I'm a bit letdown by the Sci-Fi board.
I feel bad because in all honesty, I don't know what would make a good 'generic' Sci-Fi board - but this one is way too busy for me, and doesn't really seem to fit either the Gothic 40K style OR the Streamlined aesthetic of Infinity either.
And a full 4' x 8' board of this tile? Looking at it might cause me to become dizzy and fall over!
Best of luck with this campaign though - my best bet now seems to be your success here so you can come up with something more 'generic Sci-Fi' later on down the road.
Noted with thanks! It is a real shame that we cannot get one painted up in time. So we can show you in better detail! :/. As the real justice to this great battle board is when it is painted up and done.
But we do have other boards in planned for the sci fi genre. However these will be released after a hopeful successful Kickstarter.
We will try an attempt to show you with different painting technique how an urban war battle board can be every bit as much Sci-FI in the days to come.
Once again thanks for your input and it is noted! =D.
I really like the entire Gaming Board concept but I've gotta agree with Alpharius about the Sci Fi one. I was really looking forward to what the board would be but, seeing it, it's not at all what I expected and just seems WAY too busy.
Maybe because it's too "man-made" a pattern that placing walls or buildings over it would just make them looked dropped on randomly?
You mentioned a grid and a future Space Hulk board. I'm sure I'm not the only one that would be all over those if they were part of this Kickstarter and I'm sure you'd see your Kickstarter pledges soar.
A kickstarter I would actually buy into. Sadly I didn't get the promotion I was after, so have no money. I wish I could support this. Good luck, as when I get a new job/promotion, I will be buying this.
Just a special Dakka Dakka preview. How about this Battle Board for your battles on Imperial worlds. Sci-Fi Urban War. You can paint it marble, stone, or even as metallic plates. This design is not confirmed yet. But one we wanted to initially put out.
I actually REALLY like the sci fi board. I pledged for the GBP 100 board for cracked earth and will probably add on some sci fi boards to my pledge so I can make an installation in the center of the table (I'll make walls, etc). One of my friends is probably going to pledge to get a 4x4 cobblestone for Mordheim.
We got allot of positive reactions to the sci fi wars battle board =D and allot of people are starting to kit out there boards using the Sci-Fi Wars Boards. So your pledge & support is much appreciated. So we thank you all for the general great support on this highly detailed battle board!
What are your thoughts on the Sci-Fi Urban wars boards? (pic above) This is not part of Kickstarter yet. Let us know.

I think this would look better with staggered squares, instead of rectangles. Squares would look like marble sheets, concrete/sidewalk slabs, steel floor plating...
I really like the brick board that you just showed. Very nice, can be painted as very clean, or metallic like you said. Lots of promise with that one.
Now, with your 12x12 boards, surely you've thought about road systems right? These can be as simple as the Lego base boards, just allow people to plug and play to make roads across their map. You could really liven them up though if you wanted the city board concept, as then you put sidewalks on each side, instead of the blasted terrain or brickscape. This would also really allow you to make some awesome cratered roads, or let people do that themselves for those that want that.
Anyway, while I'm not drawn to your sci-fi board, I think you need a more generic "cityscape" feeling board, where that feels more Mario Kart or apocalyptic gladiator arena(with requisite Vegas lights and chainsaw noises). And if you're going to go for the future warehouse/starship/etc feel, why not just some diamond plate or ship decking?
Great concept, great looking boards you've got. I now know how the European guys feel with crosspond kickstarter shipping. Only its a double kick to the since GBP are more expensive, so I'm not saving anything by your currency being depressed. Severely. Luckily, I send as much of my currency to support groups at miniature gaming stores as I can!
I wish you guys luck and look forward to seeing what else you guys crank out.
Thanks for all your comments will touch base on all your great comments.
Just to add free shipping to the USA and other countries as stated on kixkstarter. Your support and pledge will bring this company and all our gears about.
Thank you for your well wishes. Means allot to us.

Yes, yes and more yes!! =D. We need to get our initial core products out. You are stating our Tier 3 products after Hybrids. To make this happen we need the communities backing at large on kickstarter. As these Games & Gears Gaming boards are a long term investment. I think this would look better with staggered squares, instead of rectangles. Squares would look like marble sheets, concrete/sidewalk slabs, steel floor plating...

What do you think?
Dear Judgedoug,
Noted with thanks!!! One of our Mission statements is "For the community & by the community" (on our FB page). Everyone's input and yours with your warm wishes & pledge makes this effort worth it. It is a real labor of love. Thank you for your Pledge Judgedoug! As gamers, we are very excited and the real fulfillment for us is seeing you playing on our gaming boards. Then we know we have done a good job. 27 days to go on 28% of the initial goal. We are on track. But a pledge bomb smashing the trajectory would be awesome. Thanks!!
While I am probably influenced by Infinity, hexagon looks great for futuristic designs.
While I understand that designing an urban board is difficult especially with a single tile pattern, in my opinion that could be a real attraction, but I understand it is an expensive thing to do.
DaveC wrote: I'd concur with judgedoug staggered squares with probably look better /work better in this case.
Games&Gears what price are you intending to sell these at when they go in sale at normal retail?
Approx 10-20GBP more dearer. pending on volume. As we will then produce per order per day instead of all in one go. So you Kickstarter enables more value for money since we print these in mass.
Best!

We have the ability to do many things here @ Games & Gears. The first goal/challenge is completing our kickstarter. The whole Hybrid system and also the next stage is to insure you your gaming boards keep evolving and that your play your games on these beautifully detailed boards & at the same time paying a good price for them too. Once we have hopefully established ourselves in the market we can build on our range and offer more.
How about this for a Hex Tile would work for Sci-Fi settings and Painted the right way a Dreadball pitch - you could make massive Ultimate pitches with it. Hexs aren't sized for Dreadball I just got the hex image off google.
Nice work and yes we can do that!! First off, thank you Dave for your pledge and your great comments. Please keep them coming in!! We appreciate your great enthusiasm in Games & Gears =). Means allot.
However we would want to initially concentrate on the initial Battle Boards including our Sci-Fi War Board, which we are confident in.
A big reason for this which may also hinder us, but I hope not. Is that we do not want to over promise in terms of delivery time. We know Kickstarter projects sometimes bundle a whole load of products to get ones pledge in mass, although this does work as a manufacturer we know that this method does lead to delays and some long term delays. Since we want this business for the long term we need to keep honest and meet our promises to our backers and even do more as in delivering earlier than promised =).
That said we can do that =) and probably might do in the future. But we need to get our core initial line out first and this kickstarter backed as a success. 1000 backers is our magic number.
We hope to run competitions in the future for the community in what design they want to see in the near future. However all that will be possible with the success of the current kickstarter and we are on track. A pledge bomb would be awesome. We are humbled so far with the support, warm wishes & pledges.
One thing we will add soon which is in high demand from the RPG community is 1inch grids. Which will be offered as 12" By 12" pvc transparent sheets with the grids on which one side has strong self adhesives (like the IPAD screen protector but with grids). This will be put in the optional load out. They will lay smoothly on all our boards without any bumps. We recommend you paint your battle board prior applying the Grids.
I like that hex map. Make them small enough and they can work for Battletech. I think it is 1" hexes, but I would have to check to be sure. Or have the resident Battletech Guru chime in here.
DaveC wrote: No problem I get that it's best to concentrate on 4 or 5 boards for now hopefully you'll keep it in mind for further down road.
Absolutely!! Thanks Dave =)
Best!!
I'm pretty enthused, I hope it's successful as I can imagine all of my gaming boards will be this company in the future. Especially if it becomes very popular and boards with hills, trenches, craters, rivers, roads, etc, get made.

Hmm indeed a 1 inch hexagon board is widely versatile, space combat, battletech and other games use this configuration.

In all honesty D&D 4E and many other RPG's that use mini's seem to play better on a hex grid then a square grid, since it's easier to mark out blasts and AoE's correctly then the normal squar grids. Food for thought.
Edit: I've been so hyped for these things I just realized ANOTHER use for them. Since they are 12" squars, that makes them the perfect size for making display boards, since you can make your board as big or small as you need for the army/force/game your playing. Even more so if your able to follow threw on the idea of matching base toppers for your army.
Also I can Imagen modleing hills/buildings/ruins directly onto the 12"x12" panels to make a seamless look well still keeping a level of modularity. (Compared to the 24"x24" panels on GW's board.)
Dear all will touch base on all your great comments today.
Prototype of hex Grid sheet will be up today!! .
Thanks for all your comments. For the community and by the community absolutely !!

Automatically Appended Next Post: It's pay day today and we are trying/hoping for a pledge bomb. Just a little over 24 days till Xmas. Help us kickstart Games & Gears to life with a pledge. We are on track but a surge will help us get allot closer to meeting our goal and allot more!!!
Don't forget Battletech players too. We love our hexes!
I was on the fence about pledging to this Kickstarter, but the sci-fi boards and the potential for hex boards has me salivating. I will have a pledge in momentarily.
I really look foreword to seeing the grid overlays! Makes me wonder if just clear overlays to protect the boards would also be something people would be interested in?
My self I'm only interested in the grid overlays, since I would just spray a hard coat over the finished wargameing board. But might be worth pointing out all the same to people interested in something more rugged. =)
I know if you can sort out doing overlays, I will probly increase my pledge to get my hands on a few extra tiles+squar grid over lays. Going to need a board for Endless Fantsey when it's done after all. >.>
Would probably grab a hex one too just to have on hand, if I can swing the cash.

Warhammer Quest.... awesome game and we should open that box up again and play here at the Games & Gears Studio.
This is a mock up of our 12" by 12" sheet 1 inches square Hex grid self adhesive sheet. The mock up itself is not self adhesive and shows you just how smooth it lays on our battle board!! The actual product will be the same as quality as an Ipad screen protector with strong self adhesive.
The actual Grids sheets is using the identical tech as Ipad screen protectors. With the exception that Games & Gears Grids have grids on them (Hex or Square. Both 1inch).
I really think you guys could use some more, and better-painted pictures of your product.
Take the basic sand board for instance, all you've got is some 2-second blasts of spraypaint on it. Considering this is going to be your most popular in sales terms board, this isn't good enough and doesn't show off any of the details on it.
You really want to have a basic sand board fully painted, drybrushed, finished with static grass and maybe even shown off with really nicely painted minis on it to have good visual appeal. right now a lot of the paint jobs you've given the boards come across as a little half-assed* aren't showing them off to their full potential.
Visuals really, really, really matters on KS and right now I feel like you're a little sub-par with the "vanity shots" of the product itself compared to other gaming kickstarters that I've seen.
*Currently, you just have basic washes, and some basic painting on most of your tiles. What you really want is some careful drybrushing, and then subtle variations in wash tones for different rocks/tiles to add variation and break up the overall surface, before using a second drybrush highlight to bring things back together to the overall base colour).

I kinda agree/disagree...
They show honest photos of the product which matches their slogan 'by gamers for gamers' .
Your right though The should have each board painted up with variations... the desert board painted up in 3 or 4 different schemes to show desert/mars/snow...

They have to be careful though if they make some special 'Vanity Shots' / paint scheme variations that are beyond the basic paint schemes
They will have to marked 'for display only' and can't be choosen as prepaints, which might make people suspect bait and switch??
I'll happily paint some up! if they want/need 'painted by customer' type photos for display purposes! If they send me some! *wink wink nudge nudge*
The pictures need to be honest with the detail. We also wanted to show what gamers can do. Not what pro painters can do.
We do have pictures of models and terrain on our Facebook page .
However we will do more videos and pictures showing off the detail of the boards and paint jobs . Through the course of the next few days. Also Games & Gears Battle boards for all gamers is a base. You can put hours of work onto them. Or just a very quick paint job and it will look great on the table top either way.
Multi-elevation tiles huh? Very interested now! In fact, something just like what psychticstorm posted would be perfect.
[Rant] Also. I have to point out that your last post was the hundredth(!) time that you signed off with "Best!" (not including the "humbly and best!"). Just felt that I had to point out it's kinda lost the goodwill it once had. Perhaps a thesaurus would help expand your farewell vocabulary? Just had to point that out. Sorry! [/Rant]
Also, the custom boards you are offering in the higher pledges. Will they be available for the rest of us to purchase after the kickstarter is over? Seems a shame to go to the trouble of designing them and not seeing if the rest of the gaming community might be interested!
Kickstarter will dertmine the speed of everything and also determine if we wish to pursue development further in this market. So it is in the communities hand. Let the free market dictate.
evey bit of pledge and supports get us and everyone to where we want to be!
Regarding the rant lol. Thanks made us chuckle!!
It's all about volume for us. Quality is great, detail is great. We want to keep breaking price barriers. As we think the community deserves top quailty without paying the high premiums. Once we start breaking the stretch goals you get even more for your buck.
Thanks Cain, your support means allot. There is allot of things we want to introduce and give the community good real prices. So thanks for your support!!
Cheers!!!

I just want to admit that at 1st with the sand board I didn't know what I was looking at at... I had to find some of the close up pics to figure out what was going on with the texture.
Better painted examples of the sand board would really help. Sort of like the examples GW gives for their realm of battle board or something. It looks like the Sand board could paint up as asphalt or a open field really nice if someone took the time to.
I know some people asked about rode titles, but to me it looks like if you paint the sand board as asphalt you could then just paint your own roads/markings onto the board after.
The rest of the boards have good paint scemes that show off the textures thow.
=)
edit: Could we get close ups of the other boards also posted up here? I think it would help people here not have to dig for them.
=)

A big spike in funds on the 26th, but comparatively few backers associated with it. Looks like maybe someone (or two or three!) went for the club option?
The disturbing thing here is that it is now trends toward not making it.
It is early, but I think you'd benefit greatly from a more generic SF table option. The SF option you've come up with isn't fitting the bill, I think.
The 800 pound gorilla in the room is 40K, and having a table that fits that more attractively might be a good thing...
Yep 1 £5,000 club level sold that day without that I think this project would dead in the water - it's taken £29 in 3 days even after the grid sheets were added.
I would recommend taking down the current stretch goal table and reworking it a bit only show the next 2 stretch goals as it stands I'm sure people are looking at the £530,000 stretch goal and wondering what the hell is going on when the project hasn't even funded yet it just looks overly ambitious it's good that you've planned it all out but don't reveal so much right now.
I also agree with Alpharius about the Sci fi board this could be a really big seller but the current design is not what people are looking for it's overly complex and looks to repetitive when multiple boards are together it needs a design where the pattern isn't so obvious like the cracked earth and street tiles. I've added 4 to my pledge for variety sake but anymore is just to noticeably repetitive.
I don't mean to overly critical and I'm just trying to steer you in the right direction so hopefully you take the above as constructive criticism - I really do hope this funds as I want to get a cracked earth battle field.
Oh and while I'm at it thank you for stopping the "Best!" sign off that was starting to bug me as well
One design we want to implement is the Dakka Dakka background as panels on our battle board. For Industrial battle, forge world battles, space hulk battle for example.
Is this what everyone is looking more for?? Let us know!
We are also hoping more gaming clubs to follow suit!!
Thanks!!
Automatically Appended Next Post: We are quietly confident =) and hope our Kickstarter will be grand success.
I think a tile with 1 inch square tiles with diamond plate on it would work well - add some grills, grates, cross patterns and pipes to make them look a little less plain.
or mix up larger and smaller tiles with different patterns some diamond plate some plain add rivets and bolts here and there. So long as the the pattern isn't obvious when multiple boards are used.
Yep agreed sorry that was just intended to show a different type of tile with a cross pattern that can be mixed with other types of tiles I should have been clearer there.
No worries - especially as it brings up a good point - they may need to think outside their own particular box and think about a SF board that has 2 or 3 different tiles in order to simulate a future cityscape/street layout/etc.
Something more like thows examples for the sci-fi board would probly make me more interested in the sci-fi texture.
I will point out thow that I find the stone brickwork is probably the most appropriate to fit in with the aesthetic of the 40k citiy buildings and GW's current live-up of 40k terrain.
If we get 100 posts saying "I will pledge for this battle board" We will do it.
The panels will be very similar to this and we will nick name it the "Dakka" Battle Board. If the Dakka community and owners would not mind. Since it is you who are feeding us all these exciting ideas and as gamers/manufacturers we would love to make this. It will be your battle board.

While easy to do, I don't think they'll get people excitied enough to really boost your campaign - in the end, it too would be too repetitive.
Maybe someone on here can design up a tile or two (or three - not sure how many would be needed to allow for enough good combinations) of a SF 'streets' tile?
Something futuristic enough, yet not some pattern that will make you dizzy/hypnotized when looking at a 4' x 6' board full of it?

I would definitely get something like that. That's exactly the 3d grid pattern I was talking about. Also this sort of design with a cave scheme floor would be great (for super dungeon explore!)

The freaky repeating pattren is my issue with the current Sci-Fi board.
The trick is making a texture that has details to help break up the patten. Make it so all 4 sides any other 4 sides, but then make the texture asymmetrical. That way you can rotate the titles in different directions to break up repeating pattens.
Details like broken deck plates, burn marks, ect are all things you could use to do this.
This should not be too repetitive if you rotate it?
That's getting better, but maybe a bit more randomness? I know this is design-by-committee and that often fails, but hopefully we can get something awesome out of it.
Here's my attempt, using ASCII art
something like that, that has no pattern, the details are broken up, and can be rotated to make some random looking ground, but can also be flipped 180 so that sides can match up (like the bottom ####'s could match up to a tile turned 180 so it's #### is on the top)
This should not be too repetitive if you rotate it?
Maybe. But you run the risk of getting too busy, again. Personally, I don't want my game board to visually overpower the game I'm playing. And, in this case, it would start to look like a repetative scrap yard. Or a metals plant showcasing what textures they can provide. That's why I love the cobble stone pattern. Simple and versatile.
My vote, FWIW, is for a simple, grid-based, diamond plate pattern with occassional vents (square and round) of varying sizes to break things up. By nature of the grid, rotating won't be a problem.
Maybe even add some sort of random, recessed pipe or conduit ...
See these pics for examples of texture and recessed piping in a sci-fi style that isn't too busy. This would also allow the end-user to paint to their tastes ... clean Star Warsy or Rusty post apocalypsy.
No problem I changed the image to add a full diamond plate pattern it's just something for everyone to experiment with - resize the tiles make new ones whatever it's a base to work off wish i had more time to look at it tonight but I'll try a few things tomorrow.
This should not be too repetitive if you rotate it?
Well, your problem is you're only making 12"x12" boards, so you'd have a whole table of this random jumble. Looking at the Hirst stuff, if you made one board with those at 4"x4", so 4 of them on a plate, that would be good. But then you'd want something else to mix in with it. So maybe a plate that is all diamond plate, or one with smaller 1"x1" and 2"x2" x's on it. I just don't think you're going to hit on one plate, and have anyone buy a futuristic battlefield of just that one plate. And especially not one this busy. Looks like you're trying for 5 looks, and just crammed them together.
Now, I could get behind the plate surface in the middle for most of a plate, then have the conveyer belt part from the top right hand side running right down the middle, as a people or crate mover. That would be awesome. And then the second band makes a great looking rusting metal feel, that the GW building could sit on as a 12"x12" plate. And that first band is the perfect sidewalk for a road plate.
So I think you have some great looking ideas, but egads, not on 1 plate. Break that stuff up, think about what you wold actually see in the future.

Awesome Dave =).
I like both of these. I think the new one from Games and Gears would be great for use in a sci-fi setting that you could set a trenchline on, or even use it as PSP landing strips in a desert board, etc. Great stuff!
We will juggle it around (as we enjoy this kind of stuff =P). Hopefully have something tomorrow or later tonight. If it looks cool with a non repetitive. We hope to get 100 posts declaring they will pledge for this battle board. The we will add it as our 6th and final battle board for our Kickstarter.
Will get in touch with Dakka crew for the use of the name and more.

yah, this is sort of what I was trying to get at earlier.
Also don't be afraid to add a circle vents or something to break up the straight lines.
Yeah must admit I like where your going with that last suggestion Games and Gears add some textures and details to it but don't overly complicate the design keep it simple - one thing that becomes obvious with the 12x12 1" inch squares is that it's very repetitive very quickly.
One last one to throw in the mix as this has irregular tiled patterns and they aren't all square/rectangular don't know why I didn't remember it before!
I also like your proposed layout with optional squares too.
The problem with the latest G&G proposed square has already been pointed out - in a 4' x 6' configuration, it will look like a confused, jumbled mess - someone mentioned a junk yard?
Not bad for a particular theme, but again, not quite the generic SF board that will really light a fire under people...
I fill the main issue is the 1 tile configuration, an interesting board needs more than a single tile, yes on some environments it may work, the sand board works well alone, the cracked earth and stonework will work well as an RPG dungeon map for combat, but the wargames need more variety, this a single tile will not be really easy to provide.
I think the average wargamer will look at what terrain is available and how it can combine it with the board to see if the board is good, admittedly I did that for Infinity, I have 3 ranges I could use Microarts, Warmills and Sarrissa (and there are 3 new forming lines and they are close to microarts), from the 3 Microart do not fit in any of the boards they are an sci fi urban line and look out of the blue in all suggested boards, the cracked earth board and the sand board would look good for the pod colony out in the badlands Warmill and Sarisa have and this is what I had and still have in mind when I pledged, while I would be ecstatic for a sci fi urban board to be frank, still I do plan on getting the pods so I do look forward to the cracked earth and sand and the hibreed of the two.
So to get my thoughts a bit more coherent, all tiles so far minus the sci fi one have a merit for rpg players if they are up to paying for a tile and a hex grid over it, should be easy to recreate many encounters.
For the wargamer, in my opinion, the sand board is blunt but good, the cracked earth is the same, the urban war can only be useful in a medieval town setting, I am not sure how the sci fi tile can be used, I mean alone as part of a bigger setup looks good like a landing pad, a door to an underground complex, an elevator, but a whole board of them?
I believe for a wargamer board, a single tile configuration may not cut it, maybe this is why it moves a bit slow and it is a shame this is the most honest and upfront kickstarter I have seen and the potential it carries under it, is tremendous.
I am not sure I can offer advice, I understand the single tile configuration, tooling is expensive, putting all eggs in one basket and making a single board comprising of multiple tiles instead of 4-5 different tiles that can be used to make 4-5 different boards is risky and hitting a broader audience is more logical.
I also understand why you want to show only complete and available boards and not concept art for not yet to be realized tiles.
Maybe different streachgoals and structure?
if we reach X we will produce Y themed board (comprising of Z number of different tiles) and next 3 streachgoals be for unlocking more tiles for said board?
For example X unlocks wasteland board (3 tiles 1 small cracked earth, 1 large cracked earth, 1 plateau cracked earth) and the next 3 stretch goals enhance it with one tile each, maybe a "carved" crack earth straight that could be used as a road or a river or a lava river, a similar but turn and a raised tile? next be the naval board with 3 tiles sea tile a sea tile b sea tile with small island(s)?
I don't know I hadn't given it much thought before and these are just the ideas that came to my mind and I must agree its riskier than the single tile approach.
Turns out the best way to make it asymmetrical is to go diagonally
Now this crudely knocked together but you get the idea so long as you follow the red cardinal points everything lines up no matter what way you turn the boards tghe pattern inside can be anything you like (on a diagonal grid that is)
DaveC wrote: This the current proposal feel free to copy it and mess around with the patterns
I VOTE FOR THIS STYLE
Something I can play D&D, Deathwatch and SDE on. a 3d gridded board without the need for the sticker (so I can paint the detail on and feel the board (rather than the flat surface... I would use tiles if I wanted it to be flat)

you nailed it. no realy. I think you just nailed it.
That's what a sci-fi board should look like, and avoiding repeating patterns of doom.
The angled texture also has the bonus of making it more compatible with the grid.
ok so Dave, tempted us =D. We messed around a bit. We will post our design tomorrow.
But we had allot of fun with Dave's work. Thank you!!
Here is a 12" by 12"
A 2by2
Thanks!

Spot on!! Should have something like this tomorrow. Thanks Dave!! You have nailed it!
Automatically Appended Next Post: With Permission of course we are going to have to call it the "Dakka Dakka battle board" with an honorable mention to Dave C. With hopeful success. We need hopefully a 100 posts stating " I will pledge for this battle board."
The diagonal seems like it will fit for the most game systems. I could see a Infintiy or Necromunda board useing tiles like that. It seems like it would work for the most game settings.
Throw the square grid sheet over it, and now you have a alt space hulk board to boot.
When it comes to the textures, I would sujest drawing inspiration from Natural Selection 2.
You will notice they keep the textures "clean" but use variations in the pattens to break it up, and stop it from looking to uniform.
I think all these suggestions should help to produce a fantastic looking board! Whatever you do, don't rush the design, we are at the slow part in the kickstarter right now but you still have ages to draw up a good looking board.
Liking the diagonal designs, they really help break it up a lot more and Lockark's pics are perfect. I understand that it is hard to design an infinitely large board using only one flat surface but I think you can do it!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh and I am not really understanding the point of the stretch goals. Do we really need 12 of the gaming trays? I know I wouldn't use any of them as I would use the table for a purely display purpose! Maybe it is different for the wargamers out there?
Something I just realized. Takeing these Sci-Fi boards and kitbashing them with pegasus Hobbies gothic buildings for walls, you could make your own "Zone Moralist" board.
£350 to get 4 1'x1' tiles to make a single 2'x2' board.
It's only £40 to get 4 1'x1' games and gears boards to make a 2'x2' table. Even after factoring in the cost to get two or three of the pegasus Hobbies buildings, this is a MUCH cheaper alternative to the forge world board.
yeah, I like some of daves tiles but I think there are too many tiles per board, I think in gaming terms each 'tile' should hold a 40mm base - making it compatable with space hulk. I made this design at work in microsoft paint. I would increase the size of each 'tile' to 2" so that in a 1'x1' board you have a 6x6 grid of tile. So that this matches with FW mortalis system. In the image above i've placed 4 tiles next to each other with some rotation, the green lines mark out the 6x6 tile. If you have a few minor details like the 'hatch/panel' the tile can pretty much be rotated to space these out. This board was designed with asymetrical tiles to be asymetrical but look symetrical, so when you rotate the create another minor variation.
DaveC wrote: Yeah must admit I like where your going with that last suggestion Games and Gears add some textures and details to it but don't overly complicate the design keep it simple - one thing that becomes obvious with the 12x12 1" inch squares is that it's very repetitive very quickly.
agreed I think larger squares will work better and keeping details non imposing is important. While it would be easy to put a thunderbolt logo on that hatch kinda thing, when you grid up people will quickly keep spotting it! 'theres the great big thunderbolt generator tile! there it is again, and again.' If it was just a blank electrical looking box/hatch/panel, it can be left blank or painted with a hazzard sign/ escape hatch 4 / or a thunderbolt... you know if thunerbolts are important...
GamesNGears wrote:How about this?
This! with more squares and some angle squares like what dave has in this photo.
One last one to throw in the mix as this has irregular tiled patterns and they aren't all square/rectangular don't know why I didn't remember it before!
Spoiler:
I assume you mean the pattern under the main art? if so YES! That is exactly the kinda tileing I want on a sci fi board that can be used for lots of game like X-wing and 40k. it can be painted as metal for space ship hull, or stone for a future plaza..
I'll mess about with this kinda design and see if I can add anything...
Awesome stuff!! Thank you for your amazing efforts. We do want to do a battle board like that for sure. Your support and communities has been fantastic and also very humbling. Thanks.
The diagonal angle seems for us to make sense and for the hybrid boards to go with the rest of the range. Also it seems to be open for more game systems & environment settings.
The space hulk board is a must for us to do at some point. At the same time taking on your suggestion adding a few different panels to avoid the repetition and also making it look like a Games & Gears Battle Board as opposed others, whilst drawing inspiration from good works.
yeah,
cool.
The having the design at a angle is something I'd disagree with.
Having the pattern oppose the tiles edges diagonally just means the square edges of the tile will appear as a overlayed grid ontop of the boards pattern.
Having the pattern follow the tiles verticaly and horrizontally means the square edges of the tile is an unavoidable part of the pattern.
Hmm, you do have a point there Panic. I like that pic you posted above as well, the texture around the tiles is interesting enough without being too overpowering provided they were made big enough.
We are also torn between the two designs we have been working on, mostly because it is allot of fun. We do enjoy this stuff.
But I think we have a solution as manufacturers we are a bit more flexible.
We will publish a diagonal angle design. Once and hopefully if we reach 100k GBP about 900 pledges roughly. We will unlock the "Panic" aka space hulk battle board (will find a better suited name later). That way you get 3 sci fi battle boards which we can hybrid together with the rest.
PsychoticStorm wrote: I fill the main issue is the 1 tile configuration, an interesting board needs more than a single tile, yes on some environments it may work, the sand board works well alone, the cracked earth and stonework will work well as an RPG dungeon map for combat, but the wargames need more variety, this a single tile will not be really easy to provide.
Good post, and some of the thoughts put out in it are what have kept me from jumping into this kickstarter.
For me the whole point of modular tiles is to have variation in set up. I can buy a 4ft square desert mat that is pretty nice for less than the desert/regular tiles sold here and have the same effect. I can buy a really nice sea or space mat already. What is the point of tiles if they are all the same? It ends up serving the purpose of an mat but costing more.
Look at the GW set, each tile is different and they can be set up in a variety of ways. That is cool. The changes in elevation organic to the boards makes them a very cool alternative to a flat mat.
This project, so far, just doesn't grab me. I want to like it, I want to support it, but just can't at this point. Urban tiles with raised roads and sidewalks would be cool. Some with roads straight through, some with turns, intersections and junctions, where having a bunch of them would allow a variety of lay outs would rock. Then add cratered and rubble versions for even more variety. Desert/ground ones could have ditches/streams, slight hills and so on.
Allot of what you mentioned is in the works for later releases. We installed the hybrid battle boards for a bit of that. As mentioned here we do have different tier designs. But before we jump into multiple designs, we do need to get our core lines out first. Games & Gears gaming boards are for the long term investment. We hope in the months and years to come. You have multiple environments and choices to choose from in the same range.
But we can only do it step by step with your help. That is why we are kickstarting it .

I guess I just can't get motivated to buy a bunch of identicle boards which offer no real advantage (to me) over a gaming mat in the hopes that eventually you do make something I can use.
If the kickstarter was for modular boards allowing a variety of lay out options I would be all over it.
yeah, I'm impressed! by this project so far. I want this project to Succeed, I have faith because Games n Gears are listening to their customer base. So I've just backed them for a 6x4 board. Right now I think I'll be ordering cracked earth and urban war tiles mixed board! plus the hybrids to enable mixing.
I'll probabily increase my pledge because once I see them I'll probabily also want 4'x4' of the space hulk board and 4' x 4' of a scifi/X-wing/deathstar/40k surface compatible board .
Plus I Love converting stuff and I'm already working out a way to dig trenches into the 2cm depth of these boards!... I'm gonna need more!
Thanks Judgedoug & Panic for your great support. Every pledge helps get us a little closer to making Games & Gears and our product line a reality.
Great points Alpharius. I think now is time to state an overview of our plans and where we are headed. We are very good in keeping secrets not so much in telling the world.
Games & Gears Battle Boards
Will for now come in 3 different tiers which are:
Tier 1: Base battle boards. This are our core product lines. Which you assemble and battle on. For every any gamer who wants a great detailed battle board. These base line products are the base of our Battle boards and will evolve and morph with other tiers to bring your worlds to life to battle on. (The are the battle boards already on Kickstarter).
Tier 2: Hybrid Battle boards. A system where you can use all of your battle boards together and merge them. So you can have sea & land battles or space and space station battles for example. There are allot of other combinations.
Tier 2.1: These are a hybrid upgrades. So for instance instead of just attaching these to one side. There will be more hybrids, So you can create environments like a defense outpost/castle/town in the middle for instance and with the outskirts all round or partly in the field of war design or Cracked earth and many others, up to you.
Tier 3: World Building battle boards: Want to add roads? town square? rivers? trenches? bridges? and allot more to build your battle world to fit you and your battles.
Our focus on Kickstarter, is really getting this all going with your support. We hope together we can reach to Tier 2 or 2.1. However more Tier one & Tier 3 with the rest of the lines we be released in the months and years to come. That is why we say that the Games & Gears Gaming boards are a long term investment.
Our main goal and our hope with this Kickstarter is setting up everyone with the initial tier one & tier two battle boards. As said above there is allot more and products we have not revealed yet which we hope will blow you away (in a good way) in the future. But we have to at least keep some secrets.

These two sound VERY interesting to me - especially Tier 3!
just upped mine to GBP200 for two sets. Definitely getting a wasteland one for desert/wasteland which will be a nice change from the MKP 6x4 flocked green mats my group normally uses; and one with cobblestone for WHFB/KoW city battles (I have like two dozen armorcast medieval village buildings that are all painted but never get used!). Will probably add on individual sci fi boards once I figure out my budget.
Thank you for your support Judgedoug!! We had a few games today and it always is refreshing you really do have thematic games on the Battle Board and really brings the games to life. We aregoing to start running studio campaigns for 40k, infinity, WHFB, Relic Knights & Warmahordes. We just have to find the time to get as much gaming in as we can! =P
Had another quick mess around with the pattern today turns out it doesn't need the diagonal grid just the same join points (in red) - I still prefer the diagonal pattern as it looks less regular (there is still a bit of a repeating pattern here especially at the corners )but I wanted to show a more regular grid as some have expressed interest in that.
I'm having Tetris flashbacks after putting that pattern together.

Actually the more I look at it the more I like it on a square grid - I tried to make it look like a rooms and corridors pattern but can also just look like paneling I'm sure GamesNGears designers can play around with it some more and get it just right. Ultimately only 1 tile is going to be made at this stage if enough people express an interest in it so the less repetitive it can be made to look the better - hence the diagonal pattern looking better at the corners and joins but I'd agree that there will be some carry through of the tiles square shape.
yeah,
If I was to design a scifi board it's use shapes like these.
Cut and pasted from starwars angrybirds trench wall.
These IMO coud be space ship hull, building surface or stone wall.
Would like to thank the Dakka Dakka community. Honourable mention to Dave C & Panic, also all of you. We really like this battle board and was allot of fun to create.
Comes unpainted. But we want to show off what you can do with our battle boards.
Whilst we want you to see all the detail, here is an example of what it looks for a small Skirmish game. looks amazing for large scale battle boards too!!
For your 40k, Inifinity, Relic Knights, X-Wing battles. Also can be used for Warmachine pending how you paint it.
This can be an Imperial guard base, or an Imperial complex, Underground Necrotech facility, inside a space ship, Sci-Fi city board. The environment and placing is all in your imagination!
DaveC wrote: Nice I like it definitely want to add a set 48"x48" to my pledge. It scales up well did a quick mess around with it but there's lots more options than the original board.
Thanks Dave!! =D we loved making this battle board. We really want to see you all playing on it, then we can pat ourselves on the battle and know we did a job well done. Also thank you for your great comments. We are serious about being for the community and by the community and this is for you.
Just what I was hoping for! I must get at least four of these tiles now. (I know, I know, I said I was all kickstartered out but you did not have sci fi boards then!)
We hope this battle board will be an awesome addition to your armies and games!!

We listened to the best source of wisdom and knowledge out there: the gaming community (you). We are very proud of this battle board. Nicknamed "Dakka Dakka" unofficially in the Games & Gears studio.
Thanks Commander Cain!! We cannot wait to play games on this battle board too ourselves we hope with a successful Kickstarter we can expand this battle board. We cannot wait. To all those who can spread the word let every player inclined know as we think this battle board will look awesome in every gamers home and would love to add more to these battle boards in the other tiers.
Cheers!!
Automatically Appended Next Post: If we are able to reach 1000 pledges. We will do the Space "Panic" Hulk Battle Board. It will be a Games & Gears design. Influenced by you.
Alpharius wrote: Will there be hybrid boards available to go with this new tile set?
Oh yes!
Hybrid Match Up:
Sci-Fi Wars-Scape & Sci-Fi Wars
Sci-Fi Wars-Scape & Field of War (can be painted as moon sand or rocky sand for a sci-fi feel or what ever you want)
Sci-Fi Wars-Scape & Seas of War
Sci-Fi Wars-Scape & Cracked Earth
Sci-Fi Wars-Scape & Urban War (hi tech facility, hidden among ancient ruins)
I could spend hours describing themes. If you play Dawn Of War 2 and other games may give you an idea on the visuals. Jungle world, desert world, Urban world etcetc would be great for Infinity and the rest too!!... you can make whatever world you want.
Yeah I think if this Kickstarter fails it would be a crime against wargaming.
My only feedback is that the pledge levels are confusing. I once saw a stat that said any more than 7 levels and you risk failure.
Your current graphic of the Stretch goals should (I believe) be changed to a graphic of the pledges. Something that shows the number (and type) of boards you get, accessories etc at each level.
I know it has been holding me back from pledging as I'm waiting to try and work out what would be the best for me. À la carte? 48x48? RPG vs Battle? etc etc.
I love the idea and I really appreciate your talking to the community!
We will try to work on those points tomorrow. Your hopeful pledge gets us a little closer to make a dream & these great products a reality.
Absolutely, we will always engage with the community, if there is any community to be proud of and always humbled by their ideas, comments and passion it is this one!
Not sure what size I want to go for. Pricing is really good so that is no problem. I had the idea of a sci-fi board mixed with some hybrid sea boards painted as a space board in the very middle to make some kind of floor observatory. Kind of like this but on a grand scale.
I will probably pledge after Christmas as that is when all the relatives send money! I think this may be the case with many people so don't be too concerned about not reaching your goals yet!
Very cool Commander Cain! Makes us want to battle on your Games & Gears battle board =D. That would be awesome and exactly want we want everyone to do. Creating your worlds on our battle boards is our goal. Just cannot wait and hope to see it happen =). I would love to play on your battle board!! Thinking of scenarios already.
Feel free to copy our sig temporarily to spread awareness.
This and the seas of war battle board painted as space is a win for sure!
Your space station idea has got us going. Something we did not think of. Reminds me of the Starcraft battle missions, which you can recreate in 40k and other sci fi games. Having space in pockets of your gaming board and being surrounded by Sci-Fi War-Scape battle board. Would be really cool.
I guess the combos are only limited by your imagination!
=D
We hope to make many of these and see what players come up with in building their worlds to battle on!
If we get 1000 pledges there will be a dubbed "Panic" battle board. But we need help in a good name for our space Hulk battle board.
Everyones pledges counts. lets get to 1000 pledges .
Thanks!!

Update:18 days to go. We need your pledges to push us further to success and you can make this happen as we are confident. If all 478 of our fans on Facebook and supporters on Dakka Dakka pledge now according to our maths expert not only will we smash our initial goal but we will unlock a whole load of stretch goals. Based on the pledges made so far. So we hope this Christmas/Hanukah and holiday period you get yourself a Games & Gears gaming board. The product is great the quality is great and With your pledge we can make this happen. Our thanks and best wishes to you all. Let's make this happen!
Post here is you have pledged already or you are about to!
Two words - Kingdom Death it's sucking up everyone's gaming budget right now and battle boards come out of the same budget. I also think the British Pounds puts off US based backers but as GamesNGears are UK based that can't be helped they have to use KSUK.
of 470 projects launched (31st October to 30th of November) 30 have been successful to date
US backers account for 23% of backers
UK and EU account for 62%
There is no extra P&P for US backers here and a lot of UK based KS seem to have realised that if you want US backers you have to give them free shipping (or at least include it in the pledge price so no one's any the wiser )
We are confident and we can succeed overwhelmingly with other great projects out there. But we have noted that,
We know our gaming boards are great in quality and design and have been a joy to play on them.
Ours seems to be a marathon than a sprint. But with everyones backing and pledge on Dakka Dakka and our Facebook fans, we can do it and easily go over the 1000 pledge territory. Since we make these ourselves we have an edge on delivery.
Thank you for your pledge.
Please continue to post here is you have pledge or are planning too. Let's make this happen and enhance our gaming experience together!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Shipping is free in the USA. If we succeed in the KS. We will attend Gen Con and other conventions in the USA. As well as European conventions.
So pledge now and to those who have we salute you and want to see pics of your armies on our gaming boards once you have received your Games Gears Gaming board.
Pledge made 100 pounds for a 4by6 initially and then increased to two of them.
My local club is instersted in the 500 quid deal, hopefully they will sort it out next week. Would be awesome to play 40k on these boards in the club too.
Update: We are on 35% of our Kickstarter goal. With 18 days to go! We need 25734.00GBP to complete the initial goal via pledges. Which is roughly 260 pledges more. We are confident with your pledge this will happen. So far thank you for your warm support and enthusiasm about Games & Gears on Dakka Dakka with over 9000 views which is amazing for a gaming company that has been live publicy just over 3 weeks. Lets turn this into pledges and get these high quality great gaming boards to your home. With you we can do this! We wish you all have had or are still having a great weekend (depending in were you are in the world :p).
Thanks for your great support. Our current backers have allot of passion and enthusiasm for us @ Games & Gears. We are looking forward to the next wave of backers soon =).
Sorry if this has been asked previously- is this project on Kicktraq, or not because it's UK-based? I can't seem to find it on Kicktraq, so if it's there and someone could link me directly, that'd be great
Not that encouraging, but there are often those late-drive surges.
While I think the idea is neat and hope they succeed, I just can't find a place for them in my budget. Already having gaming boards and mats, this just doesn't hit the right spot for me at the moment. Best of luck to them though, they seem to be trying to make a quality product.
I too have plenty of gaming mats - styrofoam, roll out mats, tables, etc; but man I do not have good high quality modular hard plastic textured boards, and these look so awesome. What sold me were the extra trays on the side for storing cars/dice/dead models and not having them litter the tabletop like they normall do.
Really hope it gets funded. That's why I pledged for two 6x4 sets and willprobably add more.
I can't help but feel the timeing of this kickstarter is it's down fall right now
The Kingdom Death Kickstarter is rocking because it ends well after new years when everyone is getting their budgets together agien.
This Kickstarter ends Dec.26/Boxing day, and only New Years right around the corner. I fear that we will not see the "pledge bomb" this kickstarter desperately needs.
Yeah, I know I would pledge more if it wasn't ending right at Xmas. If it was in January I definitely could afford to probably do double. My gaming group and I would never need any other board system.
judgedoug wrote: Yeah, I know I would pledge more if it wasn't ending right at Xmas. If it was in January I definitely could afford to probably do double. My gaming group and I would never need any other board system.
Exactly. Even thow it pains me, due to my own Christmas spending I might actually have to reduce my pledge for this kickstarter even thow it pains me to do so. I dearly want to see this kickstarter succeed, as I know this will be a product I will come back to years down the rode for my board needs. But it seems the timing on it is utterly killing any momentum it gathers.
Good news is, we are expecting a hopeful late surge from clubs. Although we do want it to be as early as possibly.
We are confident in succeeding and we really appreciate your comments. It really spurs us on that all want to see us do well and succeed.
We hope to getting as many pledges as we can in the next few days a weeks with a big bump along the way. =) So if you want to get these high quality boards made to last pledge now if you can.
