Any news on our next meetup? Also, as a side note, would anyone be interested in playing some escalation? I don't have the book, or any superheavies yet, but I have been thinking about maybe getting a Cobra. Anyone else own any superheavies and/or have any interest in this? I don't want to make the investment if there is no desire to play elscalation.

The next time we meet is Feb. 8th at 1:00 at Manhattan Beach Community Church.

Sorry for being out of touch recently, between the holidays at work and some personal issues I have been rather consumed. I am looking forward to the nids release and bring some bugs on the 8th!

I might be willing to play against Super Heavies every now and then, but I am not currently interested in getting my own.

The problem with Escalation is that it you really have to discuss with your opponent ahead of time what 'type' of Escalation you guys want to play, and that really makes it hard to just show up to the shop with your Super-heavy and plan to get a game in.

There are really 3 different 'versions' of Escalation that all have their own horrible issues:

1) No-holds barred, anything goes from Escalation/Stronghold. If you're playing this type of game (and both opponents are ready for it), then it really comes down to a D-Weapon vs. Void Shields vs. who gets to go first. Or in other words, it can still be a competitive game, but it is extremely, extremely brutal and if one player isn't prepared to face D-Weapons then the game will be over in a matter of minutes.

2) Anything in Escalation/Stronghold allowed, but D-Weapons nerfed in some way (via houserule), such as just making then S10, AP1, Ordnance, re-roll all successfull saving throws (or something like that). This can totally help make a lot more of the Super-heavies viable, but taking out D-Weapons does mean that sme of the Gargantuan Creatures are a bit brutal to get through (as D-Weapons are kind of the hard counter for some of the bigger Gargantuan Creatures). So with D-weapons nerfed, you also then kind of need to ban some of the bigger Gargantuan Creatures or else they will totally dominate the game.

3) Anything in Escalation/Stronghold, but no D-weapons allowed at all...this again has the same issue as #2 (bigger GCs become really uber).

If I were to play 40K again, I would definitely be interested in playing some Escalation games, but they would have to be heavily controlled so we both had roughly similar armies. As a standalone supplement, Escalation is terribly, terribly out of balance...the points for D-Weapons do not come even close to matching their capabilities, so if one player has D-Weapons and the other doesn't, then the game will be a joke.

I do see your point here. I would be more in it for the "lol" factor than anything else. I am not a very competitive player, and would probably just go for the "no-holds barred" option. Even if the game becomes one sided and ends quickly, there is always the option of putting the Superheavies away and playing again with "standard" lists. I just wanted to see if anyone would be interested in the occasional Escalation game, just to mix it up. I also just really LOVE the Cobra Type II model. Even if I only was able to use it in one game a month, it would be worth paying for such a beautiful model. However, if never used, there is no way i could justify it buying it.

If you haven't watched this, it can give you an idea of just how lol bad/quick the games can go:

Since then, they've played a bunch more Escalation games using lists where both sides have void shield generators and unit better tailored to face off against Escalation forces for some fun and exciting games, but you do really need to completely overhaul your army builds to a select few units if you want to allow a 'take all comers' style of Escalation where anyone can bring anything they want.

They're definitely interesting games when the armies are totally designed with Escalation and Stronghold in mind, but playing this way really, really narrows down which models in each codex you can even *think* about bringing to the table lest you show up and see a Revenant facing you down.

The Cobra, for example, suffers from the fact that for only 225 more points you get to fire 4 Strength D blasts a turn (and 2 at a different target), has an amazing LOS (for being so tall) and can move so much further, make stomp attacks in CC, etc. So the Corbra is stuck in that limbo world where if you play someone who doesn't have D-weapons, then your Cobra is going to seem like a god, but if you're playing people in full-on Esclation mode, then taking the Cobra is actually a liability.

I understand this. I like the model for the Cobra enough to run it regardless of disadvantages. Also, I really like that its cannon ignores void shields, however niche that ability might be.

it is definitely a nice ability, especially considering now that every army can buy void shield generators.

Or in a nutshell, a big part of my enjoyment of the hobby was to own and digest every morsel of rules for 40k. I feel that GW is making it so insanely expensive to own all the rules now, that they've finally broken me from collecting every rules supplement, and that kills so much of my enjoyment that I don't even really have the will to even play at the moment.

I'm certainly not 'done for good' though...just waiting to see how this whole 'glut' of rules eventually pans out. In the past, when GW when nutty on adding tons of rules (3rd edition 'chapter approved' stuff), when they eventually switched to a new edition, they couldn't find the time to keep updating what they had made and ended up dropping all the ancillary stuff (like Kroot Mercs, etc).

Now that they've switched heavily to digital formats, they could theoretically just update some of these codex supplements digitally when a new edition comes out, but even doing that is going to leave all the print-codex owners out in the cold.

So I dunno...it seems like the path they're on with the rules is towards an implosion of just too much STUFF for people to even comprehend, let alone think about owning. If they continue this way, then I might close up shop on playing 40k for good.

Really about the only thing that could restore my faith completely would be some other company buying out GW, which you never know, may happen someday.

Very sorry to hear that. I know how you feel in regards to all the "Stuff." I am just easing my way back into the game after a long break that started back in 4th. I am finding it difficult to learn all the new rules for 6th, let alone all the new dataslates and supplements that are popping up ever so rapidly. Not only has it been a daunting task for my brain, but for my wallet too!

Unfortunately, I predict this will only get worse, Yakface.

I already see what direction GW is taking their business in. The 3D printing revolution came up faster than anyone thought. They are scrambling to turn themselves into Wizards of the Coast and 40k into Dungeons and Dragons. The writing is already on the wall. Selling miniatures won't be a sustainable business for much longer. It's already started with Shapeways. People will have high quality 3D printers in their homes inside of three years. Selling rules, however, as evidenced by Dungeons and Dragons and numerous other role playing games for many years, will be viable for a long time yet, especially if they can get the means of distribution under control (ie selling direct to consumer via iPad, etc)

I honestly don't think this will change anytime soon. GW is enjoying its last bits of profit from "hardware" sales and is now switching over to selling "software" - that is, their IP - which, if we're honest, has been their business for a long time now.

I'm going to PM you.

Hey guys, i can finally make it to one of these events! ( baring anything that pops up last minute..)

Anyways aside from regular games i was wondering if anyone would be interested in playing a 2V2 game vs me and extremefreak17??
I still don't have my army completed that i'm working on but i should have enough to scrap something fun together.

If anyone is interested who has a buddy coming or knows others coming let me know so we can come up with some rules ahead of time!

If not no worries, and i look forward to seeing you guys on the 8th.

How do you guys normally house rule the interaction between allies in a 2v2? Just wondering about things like psychic powers, chacters joining allied squads, warlord traits, and thigs like that.

Los Angeles (Westside - Manhattan Beach) Gaming Group @ 2014/02/01 21:08:46

Normally we consider them friendly units but not allies. You can cast psychic spells on your team mate, but can't join their squads or get in their transports. If the teams have the same number of people on them everyone gets a warlord and traits.

Somewhere between 1000 and 1500 per player, so 2000/3000 per team. Much larger than that and the turns just start taking to long for me.

Somehow I've completely missed this thread!

I'm originally from the Westchester/South Bay area. Now I live in Orange County, but a trip once a month to join a good gaming group would be very do-able! I'm excited at the idea!

I unfortunately can't make todays get-together, as I'm typing this from an airport in Florida (flying back to California today). I'll be monitoring this thread though for the date in March.

My first question would be if the group is limiting this to only miniature games, or if board/card games are something the group may be interested in to mix it up a bit?

I've also been introduced to WarmaHordes in the last 6 months and am looking forward to building a force. This seems like the perfect group to learn and play the game with.

Lastly, I own enough urban-style terrain to fill a full 8x4 table pretty densely (or split up to cover two 6x4 tables). If it's needed just let me know.

I'll also be forwarding this thread to some of my other 40k playing friends that are in the area. We may be able to get a small group together to come up.

Post by: TheGoatMan

Hey everyone, just wanted to thank those who came out. I got to play two really solid and close games. Hopefully we will get some pictures up later in the week.

Lormax, I know a few of us would be down to mix it up every now and then. There is often a lot of down time between games so something that can be played while we wait might be welcomed. I know a few of us play magic and I am down to try/bring some board games.

Sean, one of the regulars, has been dieing to find more warmahorde folks to play with, we also have some spare armies so if you want to try some stuff out before investing in the game you are welcome to borrow some of our stuff.

Terrain is always welcomed. I doubt we would need to use all of your stuff, but if you were willing to bring like half of it that would be awesome, my stuff might getting a little old to play on since we use it almost every time.

The more the marry in my opinion. The one thing we never lack at the church is space, we could easily fit 6 tables in the there.

Dude, this is the first time in months that I've logged into Dakka.

Sadly, I do think those glory days of gaming in our own hall for 12 ours on a lazy Saturday have passed. A couple things -

Goat had a real serious personal issue going on that is surely distracting him

40k is horrible. I don't play anymore.

That said, I still want to keep in touch with you and Bloodfist and the rest. Very solid crew. I'm much more interested in playing Epic and Warmaster for now, though. Keep me posted if you manage to get anything going.

Absolutely agree regarding Goat. He'll pop back up when the time is right.

I still love 40k, it definitely needs revision as a system, but I enjoy a great deal of the mechanics, new and old. I've played a few WAAC players and had a bad time, but they've been the exception to the rule. It's easy to avoid playing allies and death star lists, I just let opponents know that's not my jam ahead of time.

Hopefully the 7th Ed update will improve things.

If you don't dig 40k anymore, I'd be happy to take care of your board and terrain!

Post by: Xenocidal Maniac

Still using the board for Epic games... the terrain.... maybe. Let me give that some thought. It does take up quite a lot of space in the home.

Oh, I might be up for a game of 40k for nostalgia's sake once in a while, especially since I know you're on the same wavelength as I am. Let me know if you get some kind of game day set up and I might lug everything down.

Also, we gotta get that Warmaster going that we talked about.

Happy to take the terrain on loan, Xeno. I'm glad you're still rocking Epic. My Warmaster army is painting up very slowly, I'm in a painting rut I suppose. Once I get a rhythm going though, I paint pretty quickly. Maybe going through the rules and reading more batreps will inspire me.

And absolutely happy to game again with you Xeno! Not enough blood has been spilt yet..

Hmm. I am *kind of* intrigued by 7th edition. Enough to give it a shot, anyway. I don't see myself getting back into the grind of collecting and building and painting, but... I could see running my Chaos dudes... who happen to be painted in Crimson Slaughter colors. And I have a ton of.

So I'm moving down to the Torrance/Hawthorne in a month. Guess Ill be able to come to the game nights now! And yeah 7th edition is a freakn blast. The maelstrom missions make it more about strategy and less about whats left on the table turn 5. Hope to get in some games soon.

Don't get discouraged! The only way to get good at painting is to do it, and the only way to start opening up that aspect of the hobby is engage in it. Almost anything looks better than gray plastic. The Army Painter approach might be worth looking into - it garners results!

I want to affirm what Thokt says. The only way to get better is to keep doing it. I know it is hard to believe, but you really will naturally get better over time.

And, he's right - almost anything looks better than bare plastic. I'm an "all-painted" snob, meaning, I strongly prefer to play games with painted models. However, I'm not a snob when it comes to paint job. As long as you've put the effort in, I'm happy to play against your painted army. You'd be surprised - even poorly painted models look really nice on the tabletop presented as a cohesive force.

Keep it up! Having completely painted armies takes it to another level!

Aesthetically the game immediately feels more genuine.

When you purchase a new unit, it doesn't add to an immense painting to do list, you can build and paint it and you're ready to go!

If you choose to do a battle report, folks are more likely to read and enjoy it - it harkens back to the days of well made WD battle reps.

And if you're like me, you can return to the painted models for touch-ups and improvements and enjoy the process all over again. I'm painting the guns and armaments on my Iyanden and really enjoying it!

Hi, I'm just starting to get back in the hobby after several years, I'm located in Long Beach and I mostly just painted and collected whatever mini that looked cool. I bought mostly Ultramarines and DA units but I never really finished any because I couldn't find anyone to talk to or keep the hobby interesting. Not to mention the crazy GW price hikes!
Anyway, just looking for folks nearby willing to ease me into the gaming aspect of 40k and maybe to better my painting skills. Thanks!

Hi everyone,

I'm both getting back into GW games and a recent arrival in the LA area. Right now I'm in Gardena, and I'm definitely interested in meeting other players.

I am a big fan of specialist games (especially BFG and Bloodbowl), but I enjoy 40k and I've been wanting to get into Warhammer.

Thanks for reading!

Hello there,

Hello Desubot that's cool! If you don't mind I'd like to check out your table sometime - maybe a game or two once I get the rules down. I'm gonna meet Mikefox for my first game this coming week and hopefully get some pointers about painting as well. When are you usually free?

One day goatman might be able to host once more

otherwise its a drive out to Pasadena or a very crowded LA Bunker (not GW)

I would be up for for a club-like thing as well. I don't have a space, tables, or terrain, but I'm willing to contribute in any way that I can. Compton doesn't bother me at all. Any other location works for me as well. As for terrain, if we got together, we could maybe have a terrain building event where we all bring old broken tanks, plastic bottles, cans, rocks, foam, paint, etc. With enough people, we could probably build up terrain fairly quick.

@ Desubot - I used to work several years back by Rosecrans and Main, is that close to you?

@ extremefreak17 - I passed by Compton everyday to work back then, it doesn't bother me as well. I guess it's obvious which areas to avoid.

I also don't mind helping build terrain, I guess this is where I can finally apply the Architecture classes I took a while back!

Hey dude, if you need manpower and/or drinks one weekend to setup let me know. I'm usually available Saturdays and Sunday afternoons.

Just to re-introduce myself: I moved into LA about 1 year ago from Virginia and I have about 2k worth of Blood Angels in various stages of completion. I haven't played consistently since early 6th ed. and recently I've been pretty busy with the job and other hobbies. I'd definitely like to get back into 40k so I'll probably need a few refresher games just to get the cogs dusted.

If anyone's willing I'd be down for a game this Saturday. Competitive, laid back, it's all good to me.

I have 3 frontline gaming mats (grass, snow & desert) as well as enough old-school modular styrofoam terrain tiles to easily cover three 4x6' tables. The modular styrofoam terrain tiles look like this:

As for actual terrain to put on those tables, I probably have enough to fill 2, maybe 3 if you want to stretch it super thinly.

I'm not really interested in playing 40k tournaments anymore currently, but I'd be willing to sign-on to help run things if you'd like.

Can't argue with that! I have enough terrain for two tables, a frontline mat, and two tables(enough for a 4x6). So if anyone else has access to folding tables this can actually happen.

Hey everyone,

I've been developing some rules myself for a home-brew sci-fi game that is played at about the same scale as Warmachine/Hordes (28mm, 20-30 models per side) and am desperately in need of people to playtest the rules and give me their feedback; both on the core rules, but also the individual unit rules as well.

The optimal situation would be groups of two or more gamers that are willing to try to read and learn the rules themselves and then I can come over to wherever you game (or you can come over to my house in Inglewood) and I can watch you guys play the game…that way I can really see what parts of the rules didn't translate well from the text and look for ways to improve them.

However, if there are any 'lone gamers' out there that are really interested in doing this, then there is definitely still value in me playing test games directly against you as well (either at a place of your choosing or over at my house), so don't feel like you need to have a buddy interested to respond.

I need people who are willing to play multiple games over the upcoming months. I only have 2 factions and about a half dozen units per faction worked out to the point where I feel its worth playtesting them, so it will involve playing lots of similar games, but there are different mission rules to try out and you can, and should tweak what units you have in your force each time, so hopefully this will help to keep things fresh over multiple games (but re-playablility is obviously something I want to test as well!).

Weekends are definitely best for me, and I will buy lunch each day for anyone willing to be involved. There is a fair chance that these rules might eventually get published, and if that happens, I can almost certainly get your name added to the credits as a playtester if that's something you'd like.

If you don't care about having your name in the credits, I can instead potentially offer minor monetary compensation (something in the range of $5-$10 per game), my resources withstanding…so if that's just the thing to help get you interested in helping out, then by all means let me know!

If this is something you are interested in doing, then please post here or PM me directly. If you've got any friends in your gaming group who you think would be totally into something like this, but don't use Dakka, I'd love for you pass the info onto them as well. You can respond back on their behalf here on Dakka, or they can email me directly at: yakface@dakkadakka.com.

BTW, I can/will provide the models (and scenery if needed) for the games; basically I'll just be using a hodgepodge of old models I have lying around that are roughly the same shape and size as what I envision these units/models in the rules look like. So all you need to provide is the willingness to read the rules and the desire to play a bunch of games.

Thanks in advance!

That sounds pretty cool. If we form a meet up for 40k gaming/modeling/painting/whatever on the weekends I don't mind play testing and helping out where I can. I'll hit you up if I'm feeling up to it one weekend.

Anyone available for a 40k game or model/paint session this Saturday? If I can get my 3D printer fixed on Friday(damn piece of...) I'd love to do something 40k related and get my mind off my robotic hand project. I'd invite people over to my place, but unfortunately I don't have the room or infrastructure. Any ideas?

Me and my wife coul take a crack at the game if you want. And make ya dinner as well. We've played tons of board games and broke several. We usually find issues with rules and can be very bit picking at understanding rules, she's an English mint as well. Pm me if your interesting.

Awesome, yeah I'm interested in everyone that's interested in doing it, for sure!

I'll send out a PM to both of you.

I am probably available Saturday (tomorrow), but at least for playtesting this thing it is probably best if you guys take a week to read through the rules first (if you're willing to, of course).

I would be down to help play test your game, though I work weekends and dont get off until 4:30. Not sure what times you had in mind.

We can certainly try to schedule something after 4:30 pm. I also sometimes I have Thursdays and Fridays available.

Although like I mentioned, the best possible deal would be for me to try to schedule something where I can have two of you meet up and play and watch the game. I learn much more that way then when I actually play against someone else.

I'll PM both of you the rules.

He means at Mike Fox's house.

And the answer is no, as far as I'm aware.

Hey guys, I'm still around. I rarely, rarely check Dakka these days, however, as I don't play 40k anymore. But I'm glad to see there is such a robust group here. If anyone is at all interested in Epic, I've got two armies and can teach the game.

I've also started playing Warmaster. Both Fantasy and historical.

Both are great games! Any interest, let me know.

Would anyone be up for some 40k games this weekend? I Got my hands a ton of terrain, I just don't have the space for a gaming table.

New BAngel dex! I know it's getting close to Christmas, but is anyone interested in chucking some dice and/or doing a terrain building day next weekend?

So this thread has been dead for some time, but it seems like there are a fair number of players in the South Bay.

Any interest in a specialist games day? I have a ton of BFG, I can teach the game, and I also have a mordheim gang.

Mike Fox and I are meeting tomorrow night (8/13) at his place in Hawthorne. If any of you are in the south bay and up for some games, PM me for details.

Just another message to any South Bay people. Mike Fox and I have been gaming for the last month or so, out of his house in Hawthorne. Send him or me a PM if you'd like to be notified of future meetings.

I also live by the south bay, unfortunately there isn't any LGS I can think of (the notable one in Torrance closed down years ago), plus the san pedro GW closed down.

I'm going to be getting into Star Wars Legion when it comes out. I have the core set pre ordered so far and am in the beginning stages of preparing terrain (looking like it might be Endor). Seeing as how it's brand new I don't know how established of a playerbase it will get locally if any. But I don't think it'll be out till mid Feb at the earliest. I will probably get a couple expansions for both factions so I can play both.

I also have Shadespire and the newer Necromunda starter set. Haven't got around to painting any of it yet but it's built.

Just an FYI, a GW store opened up on Aviation and Robinson/Second Street in Manhattan Beach, although its on the Redondo side of Aviation, for some weird reason that plaza is part of Manhattan Beach not Redondo.

Thanks for letting me know, I probably would have only found out about it by accident (probably by driving past, seeing it and going wth?)

I decided to take the plunge into Adeptus Titanicus, starting small with just a warlord and knights. The big box is just too much to spend at once, and I only need 1 warlord in a maniple anyways. Hopefully at least a couple folks in the south bay take interest in the game. The models are pretty amazing.
