By the sound of it, an ink wash or two would do wonders the texture you're describing.
It is an excellent model in terms of its reception to inks. However, the painting process doesn't end there for me. Layering and highlighting on top of all those tiny bits of detail was just too much for my current temperament.
My Kroq'Gar is coming along nicely. I plan to have it done soon.

Hey, I actually did something with my models today!
All individual guardsmen assembled, looking into spraygun for quick priming. Otherwise, I have 2 HWT still on spruces and more pieces to add to the sentinel.

Love this thread....ok, time for an update...overall have done fairly well....while I have not gone "cold turkey" on buying things, I am doing fairly well on trying not to buy new stuff until I get old models done. Of course, a few deals here and there and I have ....um...well you know.
Progress report!!
* Numbers on big models refer to the second or third model (tervigon, ghost ark, riptide, etc.) for infantry, it refers to the squad....I tried to break my list up into manageable chunks, as I found it made it easier to get stuff done.
Where I have Models x #, that means I have not broken them into squads for tracking progress....there are too many.
MY TAU
As a long time tau player, I have about 8000 of the old tau done...this is leftovers, and new stuff...
TYRANIDS
Most of my nids have been done a long time, these are mostly stragglers - have about 6000 points built,painted, based.
Necrons.
Oh boy. I Played my old crons in 4th, but decided to repaint them when the new book came out. I have about....4k in the old models/scheme.
I have yet to finalize the new paint scheme, so stuff that says "Repaint" needs painting....I have not even built most of the new book stuff.
Tragically no progress on crons - I have not worked on them, they are waiting for tau and nids to finish.
um...and maybe I bought a few things.....the shame....

Grey Knights
I started a roman themed Grey Knights army right before the new 5th dex came out, and stopped the project as I found the new book too easy, and I did not want to appear to be a codex hopper.
Eventually, I will get back to them. Its a ton of older models (metal termies, etc.) and lots of conversion pieces.
NO PROGRESS.... but hey, I didn't by anything either!!!! Thats a win, right?
Space Marines
I have a chapter of my own devising that I used to play either as Dark Angles (when I was in a biker mood...I love bikes) or vanilla SM.
This listing is even more vague...many of the models here are built, and some are base coated, but NONE are DONE.
(for example, I have 40 termies built and magnetized, but not painted and only about 10 are on their custom bases).
NO PROGRESS - BUT, I managed to not buy anything!!! Yeah!!! It was not easy to resist buying more stuff since the new book dropped.
In fact, I did well....I sold some stuff I don't think I will make...
Other stuff that is not exactly in any army....
Baneblade - repair and paint
Shadowsword - repair and paint
Bastions x 2 - paint
Bastion x 2 - build
Skyshield x 1 - paint
Oh, and a lot of reaper bones, battlefleet gothic and zombies.....
Overall I have done pretty good....my friends and I keep track of our monthly goals and progress, to encourage each other.

I should paint the guard first, but since so many of my CSM were acquired through trade, and need repair/have some paint jobs that are less than table top standard, my inner painter is screaming "HERESY!!!" for not fixing them first lol.

I actually have gotten paint on my brushes in the last week or so.  Soon all of the new additions to my Slaanesh chaos marine army will have the base armor coat in place (a magenta ink wash with a bright pink dry brush). Hoping that getting that rolling will get me painting details into the units for that army again too. Still not going to list all that I have to paint, as I don't really want to discourage myself too much. Ultimately, though, since I've only got a couple more ork sets to buy to finish my last army I will soon run out of models to build so I can start using that time for painting.

Thanks lobukia. It's a nice feeling. I didn't realise I'd done so much. I've just been chipping away trying to finish a unit a month or thereabouts. Adds up though. Think I might push on, see what I can get done by end of December and take a bunch of pics of everything I've done this year. Hopefully inspire me to try and beat the final number next year.

I also managed to sell off a lot of junk.

Congrats to everyone who has made progress.
My list has not changed much since the last update, other than I have finished most of my tau I am planning on building (not gonna build the rest of my kroot, unless they get an expansion) and have moved on to my nids.
Will hopefully have all my nids done by summer, then move back to my marines, necrons or other terrain projects...

I created a painting schedule a few months ago. Its had a few useful effects - It has made me realise how much unpainted stuff I have, and how much work will be involved in getting it all painted up. I've ended up packing away a lot, and concentrating on one army for each system. Its also made me realise how pointless buying more would be. I'm starting to hammer through things, and by the end of this year, should have a decent volume of minis painted.

Last night I needed some paint...but there was free shipping if I ordered over £80...that's a lot of paint..but my boyz have no Truckz.
They do now.

Ummm, no thanks, between IG, Sisters and Marines I probably have over 300 infantry models. One knight and at least 20 vehicles invarious stages (to include NIB). And then I guess I should count the old Nids and Genestealer Cult models that are somewhere in my closet, no idea how many. So no, I don't think I'll participate.

The Knights, Talons and Raven were bought for a 2k tourney at short notice (3 days), and while the talons will definitely be used, I'd wager the Knights and the 'Raven will remain unprimed and held together by bluetac and magnets while gathering dust for all eternity.
None of the sisters are assembled, neither is the Chariot (I bought it for the flame sprue, but since I never used it and it's an awesome model with usable rules I will probably grab another pair and put 'em together) or the power armour sorceror or one of the heralds. The Rhinos and Raptors/Talons were won and have not been assembled yet either, but will eventually become a Night Lords force I suspect.
Still pondering how to make my fast response Raven Guard not terrible before I splurge on models, and a Khorne army with some Berzerkers, Juggerlord, bloodletters and bloodcrushers not to mention just barely holding myself back from buying 2k worth of skaven and jumping into fantasy.
I've decided that I won't allow myself to buy those skaven until I've assembled and painted my Sisters. I hold only moderate hope this will be achieved.

My name is unyielding Hunger, and I am a recovering Tyranid Collector. I have roughly 750 points of Tyranids in a completed state, and 4500 points that are either on the sprue, or on some level of completion. I made a resolution to completely finish every model by the end of the year, or sell the ones I have not completed off. I need all the motivation I can get. As it stands, my mind keeps turning to another 5-10k in points I would dearly like to add to my collection in the near future...Help.

1 play 40k for 20 years now, and about 17 years ago, I set this exact challenge for myself, and finished all my minis i had then (about 300 at the time). There wasn`t any satisfaction , just a feeling of emptyness, which was quickly resolved by goin out and buying kits as fast as I could.
I`ts really weird how one can feel guilty an unsatisfied when there are still lots of things to be painted, and also feel unsatisfied when all is painted.

I have made a lot of progress in the last six months, and recently hit a major milestone:
MY TYRANIDS ARE DONE!
On to the overall update:
I managed to sell off a ton of stuff, and for the most part have financed recent purchases with stuff I sold off (including a tyranid harradin, a tau tigershark and a tau orca!).
Here is my updated list.
* Numbers on big models refer to the second or third model (tervigon, ghost ark, riptide, etc.) for infantry, it refers to the squad....I tried to break my list up into manageable chunks, as I found it made it easier to get stuff done.
Where I have Models x #, that means I have not broken them into squads for tracking progress....there are too many.
MY TAU
Tau are almost completely done...just a few stragglers left...
Have about 10000 points done now.
TYRANIDS
Most of my nids have been done a long time, these are mostly stragglers - have about 6000 points built,painted, based.
Most of my nids are on hold until the new dex drops
Necrons.
Oh boy. I Played my old crons in 4th, but decided to repaint them when the new book came out. I have about....4k in the old models/scheme.
I have yet to finalize the new paint scheme, so stuff that says "Repaint" needs painting....I have not even built most of the new book stuff.
Ok, here it gets more vague...
Grey Knights
I started a roman themed Grey Knights army right before the new 5th dex came out, and stopped the project as I found the new book too easy, and I did not want to appear to be a codex hopper.
Eventually, I will get back to them. Its a ton of older models (metal termies, etc.) and lots of conversion pieces.
Space Marines
I have a chapter of my own devising that I used to play either as Dark Angles (when I was in a biker mood...I love bikes) or vanilla SM.
This listing is even more vague...many of the models here are built, and some are base coated, but NONE are DONE.
(for example, I have 40 termies built and magnetized, but not painted and only about 10 are on their custom bases).
Other stuff that is not exactly in any army....
Baneblade - repair and paint
Shadowsword - repair and paint
Bastions x 2 - paint
Super Bastion x 1 - build
Skyshield x 1 - paint
Oh, and a lot of reaper bones, battlefleet gothic and zombies.....

10 hormegauunts 3 warriors a hive tyrant 8 geanstealers 60 skeletons 3 chariots tomb king liche priest 8 horsemen 8 silver helms 5 reavers 1 rhino 1 helldrake 1 sentinal 10 pheonix guard 1 archmage 5 CSM 1 cultist 2 hellbrutes 1 ruin On average it takes me 5 hours to paint up 1 infantry model including drying times. And is was hoping to buy more CSM soon... Screw it
