Sadly, that's just one army (I've got 2 companies almost done of Ultras, 1st and 2nd). I'll get that one done, before posting more. Here's why I posted this. I can't stop buying interesting stuff. I still have more painted than not. But its getting a little embarrassing and I need some accountability (even if its strangers on the interwebz). Now, I know dozens of gamers with the same problem, so I thought maybe a little DakkaDakka support group might help. It will take me years (and I might fall off the wagon when the new SM codex comes out, but I'll get back on if I do falter).
The Catch: Admit when you crumble and try to sell the stuff you know you'll never get to. Here's your excuse to streamline the monster I know some of you have, plus second hand models keep the other guys in the game for a little less and give us extra cash to reward ourselves with a new Battleforce when we finally fulfill the challenge. Finished my Librarian from DV earlier today. The model looks good and I'm pleased with the paint job! It's gotten me motivated to maybe start Balthazar or my Terminators!

I don't know if this is a sign for new stuff or stop. 2 of my air compressors died, one caught fire, another knocks itself to death. so I bought a new one today, compressor with a tank. I got home and went to hook it up and troubleshoot, no problems. Went to clean my airbrush and get some serious painting done, during re-assemble i snapped the nozzle off, sheared it off completely. Iwata HP-A. this thing was bought very used. so now i have a brand new compressor and no airbrush. So i ordered a new one. And hope it arrives soon. Spent more today than what i wanted just to paint some dang Minis! lol

I'm not even sure I could appropriately catalog the backlog of figures I have. I have an unpainted Chaos Land Raider from when they were first re-boxed with the spiky bitz sprue for Chaos in 2000, and a 5-man squad of Cursed Knights I converted for my Legion of the Damned army, using the Cursed Founding rules in the 2003 Chapter Approved book. And an entire 13th Company army, back from during the 13th Black Crusade worldwide campaign......gah, I need to get back into painting!

I have almost the exact same break down of partially assembled Hail Caesar models. Don't know if I want to add them to my pledge too.
I'll bite on this one. I don't really have all that much I need to paint. Typically I already buy and then paint what I have before I buy more. Of course sometimes that runs over gift giving occasions so someone buys me a gift before I get everything painted. Currently what I have left was bought as a big group so hence some is yet unpainted.
1 Tactical squad (8 models, already painted the sgt. and the heavy weapon guy because I needed them for a tournament)

I've got tons to paint, but since I enjoy modeling and playing more than painting I will always buy more stuff to build while my paint queue continues to be full. I know for a fact that I will not stick to a plan like this, so won't even pretend to buy into it.

Personally, I've got a backlog with some of it lasting 3 years - most of my Dark Eldar I actually used are finished (the coven stuff), new (titan stuff), or waiting to be repainted (Kabal stuff).
Then I got Tau, and Tau were good. Those are half painted.
Then I lucked my way into CSM, and at that point said 'NO, no more! Everything must be done before I get more!', at which point christmas rolled round and basically went 'Here's a tone of Daleks you can use as 3500pts of Necrons like you were planning 2 years ago'. Well crap.
I did this back in 08. Streamlined my armies, painted everyone before buying more. It took my about 12 months. Mostly painting. I paint my miniatures as detailed as my skill allows. I like nice looking armies.
Today, I only buy one miniature at a time. When the new one is complete, then I look into the next miniature. This has kept me honest, on track, and organized.
When it comes to buying new models, you will have to go "cold turkey". Funny part, you develop a deep appreciation for the miniatures you already own. Its a good feeling to be excited about the stuff you possess.

I totally get this. Just finished a combat squad of sternguard, and now I feel this strange connection to my 20 other sternguard too. Last year I spent forever custom building and converting an honour guard squad. Now that they're painted, they're my babies. Work them into every SM list I can.
I like the spirit of this challenge, but I'm not sure I'll be able to live up to it. I don't field models I haven't fully painted, so that part's fine. however, I frequently change my mind about what units I want to include in my lists. I end up with purchased models that I never get around to painting because they don't fit in my current list. then I buy new models that *do* fit in my current list... until I change my mind again :p

My hangup is I have to buy it all at once and paint it before I field it. It's some sort of OCD, I swear. When I was younger I had three armies in 3E and only one was ever completely painted. Now I can't fathom dropping a gray model on the table. It makes army building rough, because I really have to research before making a list - it's a rough balance between making it fun and competitive without ever play testing.
Mine was that I have traded 6 or 7 armies for other armies, and the last trade was for CSM. got almost 8000 points in the trade alone, so i got to get that painted, havent bought anything for Chaos exept a heldrake, which i painted already. still, Bad time for my airbrush to die, and my compressor as well.

Characters and special models are always painted quite quickly, it's the "paint these 20 troops in the same way"-part that makes me want to bash my head against a wall.

During recovery from a lengthy illness I did get a full Daemonhunters force with grey knights, a full Witchhunters force with Sisters of Battle and a full Tyranid army painted in a matter of a couple months, because I could just paint all day long without interruption or issue. Also picked up my solid preference for painting in natural light while doing so and that is what stymies me nowadays now that I am back in the working world. The time I have available to paint with daylight is pretty minimal these days, and it gets worse in the fall and winter months. :\

Thanks for the suggestion, but yes I do have them in the lights above my desk. I think the thing that makes me like painting during the day the best is that the light fills the entire space of the room and doesn't cause excessive shadows and the like that can hamper the task of painting. Oddly it wasn't until I spent so much time painting during the day that this became a problem. For close to 20 years I painted minis in the best and worst light conditions in an alternating fashion and it didn't bother me at all to switch, or to paint in less than perfect light. Must just be getting crotchity and picky in my old age...
Oh boy, if i start this i'll be painting until 7th edition comes round. Although, if i keep the painting quota to 1500 point lists per army for 40K and 2000 point lists for fantasy, i'll still have all this to do.
If i included all the stuff for higher points lists for 40K, i'd be in the corner crying.
For me, the most realistic thing to do, is restrict this to just my Tau, as they're the only army i'm using atm. It helps that i'm already working on painting the 6 missile drones, 3 broadsides and a crisis suit commander for a doubles tournament at the end of August.
Now if the new Farsight supplement lets you take crisis suits as troops, then the list will be changing a bit. The Fire Warriors will all go, only 10 instead of 16 pathfinders will need doing, 4 crisis suits will be added and so will 4 more shield drones.
After that i'll start looking at my 2000 point Tau list.
EDIT: So it makes sense for me to lay off taking this challenge with my Tau until i can my hands on the digital farsight supplement; as suits as troops are something i've been waiting ages for. Just two days to go!
Let do this before I start some necron army or krieg.

Heh, scroll up. I daren't even try calculating how long it'll take me... Of some 25316pts and 710 Models, assuming that it's even only 2/3 of the models need work, and that each one needs and average of hours work to be completed, that's roughly 6 solid weeks worth of of work... (or 6 months of working 9-5, monday to friday...)
I've made it my goal to complete an army before the next one, but that includes the models I don't own yet.
Based on my current goal I need buy 4 more boxes of Grey Knights, 3 more boxes of GK Terminators, and 1 more Storm Raven.
Then I'll either make an allied platoon of IG or focus on making terrain, then work on my Nids, then my Orks.
I do this with the caveat that I have a few deals on EBay and Craigslist working right now. You know how those can fall through. Well, I'm trying to get my Eldar up and running so this is good for me.
No promises but I'm trying to get a regular group here in Denver for my Eldar and some friend want to do Necromunda so I'll be using Cultists for that. This is just one more thing to help motivate me!

I have a large closet with many shelves literally FULL of unbuilt (or built and not painted) stuff off my game/hobby room.
Built armies are in cases on shelves in the game room.
It is an accumulation of years of gaming - almost nothing was purchased full retail - I usually save up my gaming budget for black friday or end of year sales (my FLGS has a 33% sale twice a year) and I do a lot of commissions and get paid in models most of the time. For example, I recently finished a thunderhawk painting / basing (that thing is HEAVY) commission, and the payment for that was a riptide and some other stuff.
To tackle it all I try to make lists and divide the work into smaller groups so I don't get burnt out.
(for example, this weekend is base last weekends painted pathfinders, assemble and mag barracuda #2).
I have actually declared cold turkey on new purchases - and am going to try and finish my Tau and Nids by the end of the year.
(I still have a few commissions in the pipeline, but am taking payment for those in X-Wing minis).
Yeahh...i dont think i can do that lol. I got my hands on 1250usd worth of orks for half off and i wasnt even done with the other 1000 i had lol, was too good of an offer to pass up. I fully intend to keep it all, its just such a huge pile.....rofl
And now i need to build terrain instead because i have none and my friends and i are parting lol

I'm totally OCD when it comes to painting though. It generally takes me 4-6 days to paint a single guardsman. Not including basing time. Basing is another 1-2 days in itself, depending if I screw up or not. Just this week I had a guardsman 70% finished, tried painting while I was tired....did not end well. Ended up having to take acetone & stripping the entire model. Went right back at it & its back to about 50% completed.
I plan on getting 120 of them someday, and running them as troops with Sathonyx, with Reavers and Scourges as support
Of course i also intend on getting 30 Mandrakes just for the painting joy, so hey...

I'm a bit OCD with my armies. I like to collect the full FOC. If I collected Marines it would be collecting the entire chapter, and gods help me if I ever start collecting Guard.
Some people want a large army even if its impossible to run it even in an apoc game (since it'd all die to 2-3 Str D pi plates before getting anywhere).
A friend of mine plays Blood Angels and before he moved he put his army out on our 2 game boards to make sure he had everything. We couldnt play for 2 days, he covered BOTH boards with marines and mind you these were 6by6ft boards we had taped off to be the right size for playing. Off the top of my head i'd say he had around 150 normal everyday blood angel marines. Thats just marines, not termies dreads vehicles bikes planes etc lol
3 Lobba artillery conversions (possible, depends on bitz available)

I might hold off on the Ork conversions until the update. Wouldn't want to build that Dakka Jet from that Academy P-35A fighter, only to find that Dakka Jets are useless.

Making progress on my Eldar - in the process of painting up two Farseers, about 7 Warlocks and 10 Warp Spiders (unfortunately for some reason the primer on these guys is resisting paint so I may have to strip them again and start again).
Almost finished the Farseers other than some final details, and the Warlocks just need some of the main bits finishing and then details painting on. Might try my hand with freehand painting on the cloaks of all of these guys.
Also painting up a few spare Guardians as well as 3 support platforms and crew.
Guess we are ahead of the Podcasts... Independent Characters just had an excellent cast on pretty similiar topic: Its covered in the first 1/2 hour, I recommend giving it a listen

What is considered as unfinished? For example I'm a making a unit of nobs but they lack a transport. Is it finished when I just finish the nobs or is it finished when also got the trasport done?
How about kits that I have sacrificed for the bitz god? Should I build what I can from remaining bitz?
edit: I also accidentally got too many boyz for my purposes should I also finish those as well?

Even my longest established army, my khorne dedicated chaos marines which as a couple thousand points fully painted, still has had enough new stuff added to it to require a lot of painting time. Well I have been looking at this thread for a while but wanted to wait until I bought all the Warhammer Fantasy stuff for my first army.
So I did paint my full space marine army which was my first army ever before playing a single game. I felt I would be a joke if I went to the local game store and had primed or just grey models on the table.....I WAS WRONG! Half the people had half painted armies but I still won't bring anything unpainted to the table. Why buy models for an army if they are just grey? Takes away from the game in my opinion haha

I broke but not because of the new SM stuff. I had an opportunity to pickup about $560 worth of ork stuff for $275. Could not pass that up. I did not include the ork stuff I had been collecting in my original pledge. I am finishing my SM before I begin on the orks. So I kind of only half broke.

I'm trying to get everything outstanding done in time for the new codex to hit as I know I'll want the rumoured 'nids, orks and guard codexes that are meant to be coming over the next ~8 months and I have nearly as big piles to do of those as well that I will try and repeat the process for.

Nearly there with that lot, just got another coat of red, some tidy up, washes and highlights to do. All those marines I built from my bits box :s

I know I'll want another 40 or 50 marines when the new boxes hit to fill in a few gaps in my chapter, plus 30 HH terminators from FW to round out my termies to 100. Centurions I want six of each type but I'm on the look out for alternatives. Tanks I'm not so sure what I'm getting, lack of interceptor puts me off, prefer my quad guns for the points.
The painting never ends when you make it worse for yourself. :(

Feels like yesterday, I should have done a photo shoot for the cursed thing.
Wash and dry it well, all the nooks and crannies retain much of the mold release (they needed a lot).
Pin everything you can (Yes there are a lot of pieces).
I had a few ideas to have the gun swivel, bad idea.
There is not a lot of room to get the gun to swivel well and not fall off.
I made and mounted mine on a stand.
Try to use some applicators for the glue, the tube spout only seems to ensure enough flows for fingers to get stuck to.
Good luck, do it in stages and you may not develop a nervous tic.

Well I've managed to paint 20 Imperial Guardsmen and 2 Chimeras since we last 'spoke', and half finished a Grotesque. Not great by any stretch of the imagination but I haven't bought anything either so I'm technically still on course...
....I'm pretty confident however the new C:SM will land before I get all this wiped up and then god help me......
Still have about 15-20 Cadians left, and 6 heavy weapons teams (which I hate painting soooooo much).
I usually can't help but buy something from time to time, but I was looking for a Basilisk right when they were pulled from the shelves and disappeared from everywhere but GW's site, and that put me off for a while.
Painting all of my tanks was less of a pain than I thought it would be - I used an airbrush to do camo, and then sprayed a wash over them. After that just used a toothbrush with some textured paint to add some mud and they maybe took a combined 6-8 hours for 10 tanks. Same for the valkyries minus the mud.
Definitely a good way to stop yourself from buying anything if you can really motivate yourself to paint everything you currently have.

I'm really hoping this keeps me accountable and helps me turn the tide of having more unpainted models than painted. A good many have been primed or started, just never finished. Anything that helps I guess lol

My wife did criticise me about getting more stuff before i've finished painting what i have, and i've been trying to get everything painted before i move on, anyway, here is what i currently own that isn't painted:
Imperial Fists Battlecompany, roughly 130 marines, 15 bikes 30 terminators, 40 scouts, 10 rhino/predator, 3 landraiders and more stuff.
Painted are 2 tac squads, terminator squad, librarian, 2 las/plas razorbacks, and an autolas predator.
I may weaken because the new boxed sets for marines are nice, i definately want to get a squad of Centurions, a stalker, and a thunderfire, and grav guns for my bikes. I've also decided to ally in some dark angels so will be splitting a DV box with my best mate
Space wolves, all classic metal stuff, was badly painted, but it used to belong to my wife, but she stopped playing and i stripped it all, so now needs repainting.
Highlights include Leman Russ, Ragnar Blackmane, Ulrik, Njal and 2 full squads of metal greyhunters, 2 full squads of metal bloodclaws, 15 long fangs etc etc

Those are all done as are some Ork mechs I made and my 10 penal legion. Also made a start on my Khorne Noise Marines and Ork Warboss on a bike, WIP below.
Picking up 100 marines, 10 rhinos (half will be converted to razor backs), and 2 storm ravens with chapterhouse extension kits, all needing to be built and painted, but they can wait till next month.

finished the bikes up this last Tuesday. Started on my Captain.
Oh and I found out my wife will be painting the Orks so thats less on my plate. Since she is doing those and I am doing the Marines, well the 10 year old can do his own friggin Space robot zombies of ever lasting stand upy ness.
Managed to get all the terminators done, along with the generic Dred too. Pics to come in my gallery.
On a side note, I think I'm coming to realize that I paint very slowly haha
About half way through with my latest batch of ~80 marines, not going as quickly as I'd like. Got distracted building rhinos, the new Microart Eldar defence line and rebasing a bunch of Nurgle Bikers & Terminators.

To be fair, Terminators take far longer to paint than most things in my experience. This includes Crisis Suits and some vehicles.

To be fair, Terminators take far longer to paint than most things in my experience.
I think it was because I was trying to bling mine out a bit with some more gold thrown in on the assault termies. Plus I tried to take my time on the lining portion.
So I broke down and got the new Tac Marine box this weekend. I have 2 lascannon marines, 6 bolter marine 1 flamer and 1 plasma marine to add to my to be painted collection.

So I couldnt resist rekitting one of my bikers last night. I got creative with my hobby knife and whacked off his painted but unsealed right wrist. A bit of popping some glue ( I was terrified i would break him OMG) and poof. Bikers with a Grav gun. Also didnt put the flamer arm on the last tac marine. Went with another bolter. I counted my flamers and have 3. I only use 2-3 squads of Tacs and prefer they dont all mirror each other. Varitey is the spice of life dont ya know.

Got the TFC done and even tried my hand at doing some freehand work on it. I put a crosshair on the target screen and was happy with how it came out. Gave in and bought the sternguard box. Then I discovered I must have damaged the needle for my airbrush so no batch painting for me until that fixed. I've been scouring ebay for deals - I have no impulse control atm with extra cash coming through.

My friends and I use project tracking and all of us have monthly goals and support each other in trying to do more.
My list went from 65 items to 47 in the last few months...so that is some pretty good progress.

The Imperial Navy is not a priority at all; no one locally has an intact fleet at present; mostly the beginnings of fleets not finished due to the cancellation of BFG; I won't have an opponent until after xmas at the earliest, though I did really enjoy painting my 4 cruisers.
I'm starting off with my built and primed Death Korps infantry section, which'll end up on my P&M blog sooner or later, and a SM Hunter, though that one likely won't. After that, I might start my Tau (I've only painted Farsight himself so far), or do all my Korps bases, as I've now got 30 infantrymen, company command and a platoon command ready for mudificaiton. Who knows, we'll see what mood I'm in.

Well, I broke my word in a way. I didn't have any suitable models to proxy as either a librarian or as Tigerius, so I ended up buying the new librarian model. But, no new models in the SM army until I get them all painted for real this time. Also, managed to get the techmarine manning the Thunderfire Cannon painted tonight.
Add one Tac SGT complete and the rest of his squad's aromr is done black for the body and Purple on the hands, feet, knee pads, elbow pads, pauldrons and helms as needed done. Now to finish at least 2 more this weekend...hopefully. It is canning salsa weekend so we shall see

I ran into a little snag while basing my Purifiers. I noticed that paint had started to rub off in some places. I think I left them unsealed on purpose so that I could go back and try to fix their atrocious white shoulders. Fortunately my painting skills have improved since they were built and I gave them a fresh run of touch ups to make them look better than before

Been slowed down by baby prepping stuff and work, but hopefully I'll have three more sergeants done by the end of tonight or tomorrow. Making progress on the troop models is easy, it's the vehicles I'm worried about
Hi folks, I'm back with a tonne of IG. Recently got given some very nice models by a friend, so everything is on hold until they're done. In the long haul, my aim is to have these and my Russ tank company fully painted, though these will be in two very different styles.
So, the new list:
15 stormtroopers (One of which needs to be finished)
10 Guardsmen
2 Heavy Weapons teams
7 Leman Russ Battle tank variants, with condiments (alternative weapons, etc)
1 Hydra
After that, it there's the 70 or so guardsmen to do, as well as anything I acquire over the christmas period - which could (potentially) include a Stormblade However, that is all in the future. There is my list, due by Christmas Day, mission Alpha painta is a go
Yay! Skink Chief and Skink Priest are finished now, and I'm starting work on my Stegadon. For whatever reason I've become very enthusiastic about painting as of late - probably because I've finally nailed down a color scheme that does Lizardmen justice instead of the plain boring old blue/green stuff.

Too much disposable income, interest in too many armies and too much need for options in every army you have.
That is at least how I do it. I still can't make myself post up all I have to paint here because I know it will just completely discourage my hopes of getting it all painted. My biggest issue is in slowly selling off all but one of my fully painted armies, while expanding that one dramatically, and adding and growing a bunch of others as well. So I kind of slowly phased out the painted minis and replaced them with unpainted new stuff with much less time available to paint it all. Hahahahahahahaha!
Just do what I'm doing. Small chunks (I say small... 7 Russes. Madness.) for a set deadline. It's got me through my Tau, it'll get me through the first part of my IG!
Oh man, I gotta say, Stegadons are really difficult to paint.
I have three, and they're assembled but don't have their platforms attached to their backs - it's just the dinosaurs. However, I'm having a really hard time painting these. Their back plates are relatively easy, but their bodies are so full of tiny plates and hills and valleys on the musculature it's incredibly difficult to shade and highlight. I've botched two in the process of trying to figure them out, and they're now destined for the simple green treatment and the last one will stay untouched until I significantly improve my ability to cope with such an exotic landscape of detail. Sheesh!
Well, I'll move onto my metal Kroq-Gar model. It's a similarly styled sculpt in terms of tiny plates of armor, but in lesser quantity. Wish me luck, folks. :(

By the sound of it, an ink wash or two would do wonders the texture you're describing.
I finally caved in and bought 2 Baneblades through the swap shop. I couldn't pass up the deal! For now I'll get them built and set aside with the other 200 or IG models til I can finish my GKslol
