Ok, so I was planning on doing something along these lines anyway - everything has to be painted, based and in foam before I can start another force / buy much more.
I've got a lot of stuff - lot of ebay / second hand things and cheapo bits for making homebrew units etc.
Models marked with a - at the start are 'fanmade' or custom.
Lets run this with a key:

So over the last days and weeks I have been abel to get a large amount of painting done. The absence of the need to work has done wonders it seems. Anyways what is listed below is what remains to paint/ assembel/ base. I also broke my own promise to not buy more when a box of Grey Hunters for my SW came home with me one day

During recovery from a lengthy illness I did get a full Daemonhunters force with grey knights, a full Witchhunters force with Sisters of Battle and a full Tyranid army painted in a matter of a couple months, because I could just paint all day long without interruption or issue. Also picked up my solid preference for painting in natural light while doing so and that is what stymies me nowadays now that I am back in the working world. The time I have available to paint with daylight is pretty minimal these days, and it gets worse in the fall and winter months. :\

Have you considered investing in a Daylight Bulb?
They're a bit pricier, but well worth it.

Thanks for the suggestion, but yes I do have them in the lights above my desk. I think the thing that makes me like painting during the day the best is that the light fills the entire space of the room and doesn't cause excessive shadows and the like that can hamper the task of painting. Oddly it wasn't until I spent so much time painting during the day that this became a problem. For close to 20 years I painted minis in the best and worst light conditions in an alternating fashion and it didn't bother me at all to switch, or to paint in less than perfect light. Must just be getting crotchity and picky in my old age...

If i included all the stuff for higher points lists for 40K, i'd be in the corner crying.

For me, the most realistic thing to do, is restrict this to just my Tau, as they're the only army i'm using atm. It helps that i'm already working on painting the 6 missile drones, 3 broadsides and a crisis suit commander for a doubles tournament at the end of August.
Now if the new Farsight supplement lets you take crisis suits as troops, then the list will be changing a bit. The Fire Warriors will all go, only 10 instead of 16 pathfinders will need doing, 4 crisis suits will be added and so will 4 more shield drones.
After that i'll start looking at my 2000 point Tau list.

EDIT: So it makes sense for me to lay off taking this challenge with my Tau until i can my hands on the digital farsight supplement; as suits as troops are something i've been waiting ages for. Just two days to go!

Let do this before I start some necron army or krieg.

I daren't even try calculating how long it'll take me...
Of some 25316pts and 710 Models, assuming that it's even only 2/3 of the models need work, and that each one needs and average of hours work to be completed, that's roughly 6 solid weeks worth of of work... (or 6 months of working 9-5, monday to friday...)

I've made it my goal to complete an army before the next one, but that includes the models I don't own yet.
Based on my current goal I need buy 4 more boxes of Grey Knights, 3 more boxes of GK Terminators, and 1 more Storm Raven.
Then I'll either make an allied platoon of IG or focus on making terrain, then work on my Nids, then my Orks.

This thread has made me consider quitting the hobby.

I'll finish my Necrons but there's no way in hell you can make me do those CSM.

Ok, i'm on crons, but i NEEED another box of immortals so i at least have a playable 1k army... then i will paint it all, i promise!

My name is dave, and I have a model problem....

Anyway, I have made at least the minimum promise to myself that I won't buy anything unless I finish something...which is not anywhere close, but it helps.
* Numbers on big models refer to the second or third model (tervigon, ghost ark, riptide, etc.) for infantry, it refers to the squad....I tried to break my list up into manageable chunks, as I found it made it easier to get stuff done.
Where I have Models x #, that means I have not broken them into squads for tracking progress....there are too many.

As a long time tau player, I have about 6000 of the old tau done...this is leftovers, and new stuff...

Most of my nids have been done a long time, these are mostly stragglers - have about 6000 points built,painted, based.


Necrons.
Oh boy. I Played my old crons in 4th, but decided to repaint them when the new book came out. I have about....4k in the old models/scheme.
I have yet to finalize the new paint scheme, so stuff that says "Repaint" needs painting....I have not even built most of the new book stuff.


Ok, here it gets more vague...

Grey Knights
I started a roman themed Grey Knights army right before the new 5th dex came out, and stopped the project as I found the new book too easy, and I did not want to appear to be a codex hopper.
Eventually, I will get back to them. Its a ton of older models (metal termies, etc.) and lots of conversion pieces.


Space Marines
I have a chapter of my own devising that I used to play either as Dark Angles (when I was in a biker mood...I love bikes) or vanilla SM.
This listing is even more vague...many of the models here are built, and some are base coated, but NONE are DONE.
(for example, I have 40 termies built and magnetized, but not painted and only about 10 are on their custom bases).


Other stuff that is not exactly in any army....
Baneblade - repair and paint
Shadowsword - repair and paint
Bastions x 2 - paint

Skyshield x 1 - paint

Oh, and a lot of reaper bones, battlefleet gothic and zombies.....
