Not to poop on the party, but I can't say I agree with the concept of a Veteran Repentia, a Repentia Canoness, or a Penitent HQ. They're essentially death sentences, especially being strapped into a Penitent Engine.

Similarly, I think it is possible to fight your way out of the Repentia, but at that point you've earned back the right to be a Battle Sister, you wouldn't become a "Veteran Repentia".

It just seems a little weird.

I would see it as a representation of their own extreme faith....... they (probably) would believe the emperor saved them.... some of those might try to lead fellow repentia to that same salvation, i can see it but YMMV

I was seeing a Veteran Repentia as one who has survived numerous battles, but still doesn't believe herself absolved, and so continues fighting, or perhaps it is one of those few on the road to absolution?

Same to the 'Canoness', though you could just say it's a Canoness who is repentant, or maybe an order that became?

But these had exactly zero fluff so far, so this helps. If you have any other questions / ideas / fluff justifications, bring it up!

As for Valeriya (Penitent HQ), she's got extra armour, and when I model it will be enclosed in a more Iron-Maideny type coffin, protecting her from death - her crime being so extreme she is to suffer for so much longer.

I need to work on the fluff, and possibly actually read some more, as my actual knowledge of sisters lore is rather limited - I've worked extensively with the rules however.

Comments on the balance of the units would be good too, unless they're fine, in which case awesome!

Repentia Mistress

I can see the idea of a Canoness who had forsaken her office and joined the Repentia although it might make sense from a fluff perspective that she wouldn't be an Independent Character. Maybe she could have a retinue of other Repentia, but wouldn't be able to use Look Out Sir! since that runs counter to the goals of the Repentia. Similarly anyone who is in the Repentia wouldn't really be exercising any leadership.

As for the Penitent Engine character, PEs aren't a death sentence because you're strapped to the front w/o any armor, it's because you're in them at all. The person who's "operating" the engine is basically already dead, they're just jacked full of chemicals that make them feel crazy rageguilt. Once the battle's over, if the engine's not destroyed, the "pilot" is basically a husk.

From what little I can find searching it, if they survive the battle they get thrown back into battle till they do, the chemicals forcing them to be superguilty about it the whole time.

Still, it's not inconceivable in my eyes, that someones crime was so heinous that they were granted a living tomb, with a different composition of chemicals meant to extend the life and suffering of this most heinous criminal.

Not sure what would be the crime? Causing the negligent death of almost her entire order, the survivors becoming repentia?
Betrayel of some sort...

I like the idea of the non-IC Contritioness with the Repentia Retinue.

Also - St. Celestine is/was a Repentia for what it's worth.

Also, also, at the end of the day, Valeriya is my favourite idea so far, so even if I have to change it up, I'll find a way to make it work. : D

Sister Vastly Superior

I feel like a dedicated sisters flyer with maybe a pair of torrent heavy flamers and a multimelta, would fit quite well, ido realise the weakness of that loadout (and for the love of god, forward arc only the flamers at least) but it would fit the theme without breaking anything

I collect:
Guard - 2k of mostly infantry
DA - 2k of deathwing, 2k of other bits (no vehicles)
Sisters - mostly converted/proxy because I'm waiting for therange to go plastic.
Tau - 2k with no riptides because I can.

I'll add it to the list, and see what can be done.

Also - 460 views and not one comment on balance...
Are they all perfectly fine?
I mean, my ego isn't so large that I expect my pricing and rules to be perfect without input from others!

And now, updating to the 6th ed Adepta Sororitas book!

Starting with the HQ variant - Valeriya the Damned.
Spoiler:
Army: Adepta Sororitas (Sisters of Battle)
BG: Valeriya the Damned - The unforgiven one.
She who gave the command that damned an entire Order of the Faithful.
Interred in a specially modified Penitent Engine designed to be her tomb, extending her suffering rather than ending it quickly, she lives in internal torment - the only small respite felt each time she rends the enemies of the Imperium.
Valeriya's four armed Penitent Engine bears an Iron Maiden style tomb encasing the front, protecting her from a merciful death.

+40pts over her 5th ed counterpart.

I decided that she should get to keep Battle Frenzy, being a Special Character.
In turn, I've made it so she can no longer be the Madatory HQ and Warlord - though if people think that her being a Mandatory HQ and Warlord is fine, then I'm happy to drop it!

But she allows you to bring 2 squads of Peni's as troops, freeing up those Heavy Slots, and can bring a pair of Defenders (regular Penitent Engines with Heavy Bolters), that I will add presently.

Penitent Defenders:
Spoiler:
Army: Adepta Sororitas (Sisters of Battle)
BG: Penitent Defenders are meant to be sort of 'rear guard' engines.
Unique to the Damned Order Penitent, they have some longer ranged firepower to allow the army to have some defence against rear, or flanking attacks.
Charging forward with their fellow Penitents, but with long range sensors and programmed to target any distant threats with shoulder mounted Heavy Bolters.

Spoiler:
Army: Adepta Sororitas (Sisters of Battle)
BG: Repentia Superior are longer served and more scarred than their sisters, maybe bearing some form of bionics, and more heraldry.
Likely they could have been redeemed and rejoined ranks, but they don't see themselves as such so continue on their path.

+Deploy (Can't move -10, +1 Invun +10, +Skyfire +15, TL-Specific +5, Must Deploy with -10) +10
Sub-total: 175
Penitent: Reduced by 20%
Total: 140

This one is a Defender, but boasts 4 Skyspear Missiles without Savant Lock to provide some relatively reliable (effectively BS3), AA (Average pen result of 14, with +1 to damage).
in return, it can't move when firing at these, as Penitents aren't smart enough at this point, so software says STAND HERE AND SHOOT THAT.

Having play tested these a little, I'm happy with the performance of the Avengers vs their cost.
Defenders should be fine also.

Valeriya died too quickly to really tell (though she is capable of putting out a load of hurt, she didn't last very long).
The Zeniths didn't really do much other than function as overpriced Defenders, due to there being no Flyers/Skimmers/FMCs.

I'm relatively happy with Katterin at her price range as well.
Feels worth it for what it is.

Grim and dark. Three thoughts:

1) I'm all for some kind of Repentia character to replace the jarring Mistress of Fetishes, I mean Whips, I mean oh forget it.

2) Holy feth that's a lot of Penitent Engines. Take both special characters and you could have 36 Pengines.
Spoiler:
HQ: 3 Penitents (Valeria & bodyguards)
Troops: 6 Penitents (one per Repentia squad)
Elites: 9 (3 squadrons of 3 Defenders)
Fast Attack: 9 Penitents (3 squadrons of 3 Avengers)
Heavy Support: 9 Penitents (3 squadrons of 3 Avengers or basic Pengines)

3) Defenders seem like more a Heavy Support choice than an Elite. Wouldn't a Elite Pengine be ever more assaulty than the ordinary kind, not more shooty?

4) All those Repentia could use some sort of assault vehicle..... if only to explain why the entire Order wasn't wiped out in the first battle.

1: Damn Straight! : D
Only one set of (sleeveless) power armour in the whole army if needs be!

2: More actually.
Valeriya +2 Defender
Katterin + 9 Repentia
3x3 Defender
2x3 Penitent
4x 10xRepentia + Penitent
3x3 Avenger
3x3 Zenith/Penitent
For 50 Repentia and 40 Penitent Engines.
Only like... 4000pts too.

3: Sorta but at the same time... I dunno.
I mean, Penitents really felt more like Elites tbh, and would be far better served in that slot... but I suppose with the changing around, and making them troops, could make another type of Elite penitent and have Defenders as heavies.

4: Yes. Yes they could!
Though fluffwise (is that here, or was it lost to the Loading...!?) they're constantly replenished with penitents from all around, as they've sort of become a penal legion / dumping ground for the ecclesiarchy, so that only a few squads worth of repentia that they think are redeemable are left with actual orders...
They could do with an assault vehicle, that simply hasn't been made yet!

But balance wise is all good?
No screw ups in the unit builds?

Wow. So at any non-Apocalyptic points level, the answer to "how many Penitent Engines can I fit in the FOC" is is "however many Penitent Engines you can afford, baby." And with that maxed-out force, what percentage of your points are invested in AV11/11/10 Walkers? If I'm Chaos or Orks that's gonna hurt, but against Guard, Tau, and probably Eldar your only hope is they're laughing too hard to shoot straight.

4060 is AV11/11/10.
4260 is Penitent Engines.
So 80%.

'Course, I'm trying to make a list with Katterin AND Valeriya.

But maybe I should take a cheaper 'primary' HQ, and just fill up on Penitent Engines otherwise?.

Kinda want a non-penitent engine now...

Hmm.

Sororitas Castigation Engine {Heavy Support}...................90 points

WS 4 BS 4 S6(10) FA 11 SA 11 RA 10 I3 A2 HP3

Type: Walker
Wargear: Two Dreadnought CCW with built-in Heavy Flamers
Special Rules: Shield of Faith, Acts of Faith, Unleash Fury, Rampage, Fleet
Options:
May take up to 2 additional Castigation Engines for 100 points each.
May exchange Heavy Flamers for Heavy Bolters for free
May be equipped with up to two additional two Heavy Bolters on shoulder mounts for +10 points each.
May take Sororitas Vehicle Wargear items.
One Castigation Engine may be fitted with a carapace-mounted shrine for 10 points (counts as a Simulacrum Imperialis)

Unleash Fury: This Act of Faith is used in the Assault phase. The unit gains +2 Initiative until the end of the phase. If the unit has not been joined by a character, treat it as having Leadership 10.

Basically, a Penitent Engine with a fully power-armoured and non-repentant Celestian piloting it.

Interesting. Somehow though I think it's more like a crazed priest or Frateris you'd find riding something like that into battle, more than a (relatively) rational Celestian.

Ah, but the Castigation Engine isn't so crazed. Rampage is because of the way it can make huge sweeping blows rather than because it's moving fast and striking crazily.

Quoting Furyou's post from the 'Fixing Penitent Engines thread:

 Furyou Miko wrote:
I hate Ovion's fluff with a passion and can only justify it by saying that Valeriya is the one who said that her order was fallen from grace, and that it was because they failed to protect something important rather than because of anything they actually did....

I hardly hate -- I actually quite like -- but I'd agree that "Order that failed" has more appeal than "Order that fell." If the Order's loyalty were in doubt, the Ecclesiarchy and the rest of the Orders Militant wouldn't trust them to still be on the battlefield, they'd annihilate them, or at least break them up into individual Repentia squads scattered and under close by different Orders, rather than keep them as a single force. If the Order was still loyal but had screwed up in some massive and unforgivable way, I could totally see them being condemned to perpetual penance.

Mission failure and moral failure are both capital offenses in the Imperium, but it's moral failure that seems to be taken most seriously. Isn't there a line in fluff somewhere that even the traitor can be given a chance at redemption, but the heretic cannot, because his heresy is both automatically treasonous and a still worse crime wrapped up in one?

With due credit to Ovion for both inspiration and his homebrewing guide, I've made some Repentia characters of my own, the Veteran and the Champion. It's not a whole Penitent Order, but if you have an army entirely composed of Repentia and Frateris Militia, the Repentia Champion can actually be your Warlord....
